Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

A blanket of darkness spread across Spiderhaunt Woods as the sun set for the night. All around the area, the clicking of pincers and chattering of spiders could be heard and within a few moments, the darkness had spread so thick that the trees now looked like the shadows of spindled arms and other such horrible shapes. What was once the gnarled trunk of a tree now looked like a horrifying face of evil.
A shadowy figure quietly walked across the Spiderhaunt Woods with unnerving determination. The black cloak which was wrapped across his body blended the stranger within the darkness. A normal person walking would have made lots of sound, such as snapping twigs underfoot or the squelching of mud. But the magical elven boots worn by this stranger masked most of the sounds made, so only small pitter-patter footsteps could be heard.
But he was not the only person here within the woods, the Spiders had been watching him with mad curiosity. Who was this stranger that invaded their home and why was he here? Then the questions were abandoned when they decided that this stranger was now food. The spiders slowly crept down the trees, making very little sound, and began to crawl towards him. There were three in total, and they were not small spiders. They were as large as dogs, and they were just as fast.
But perhaps they made too much noise, or perhaps they had been seen... it did not matter, for the shadowy figure whipped around and in his hands was a heavy metal crossbow which he fired. Three metal bolts came speeding towards the spiders and sank into each of their heads, killing them almost instantly.
But there were more spiders waiting, but that did not stop this shadowy stranger from moving forward deeper into the forest...

A fellow figure could be seen travelling through the underbrush, flanked by several more shadowy figures, none of them seeming to possess the same grace as him. Indeed, the tall cloaked figure seemed possessed of some odd grace that suffused every part of his being, and surprisingly, not even the sound of footfalls could be heard from him. Unbenknownst to others, this was simply because the man walked several inches off of the ground, instead using the air as a road, and muffling his approach. Yaksha had heard tell of odd occurances in the Spiderhaunt Woods recently, and even now he took it upon himself to investigate. The lich had donned his gargoyle cloak on his way out of the home, and his blue-steel frost daggers lay looped through his belt.

The figures following him were seven undead, each male and possessed with impressive physical features as a result from his odd experiments on these creatures. One man, looking as thin as Yaksha himself, had one of his arms removed, replaced instead with a wicked-looking claw. Ichor dripped off of it, as several foolish spiders had chosen to ambush Yaksha and his entourage earlier; they had been slain swiftly, and with surprising ease even to the lich. This batch of undead was impressive, to say the least. They moved clumsily through the bushes and trees, several of them cut or bruised from contact with branches and thorns. The blood flowed slowly, like syrup.

Yaksha had already sensed someone else within the woods, but he had felt no need to interact with him yet. Whoever it was also attracted spiders to him, so he no doubt was a person to be interested in. However, his goals in the forest were already clear, and Yaksha wasn't one to be distracted from his duties. Still, from the corner of his eye, he kept a glance at the bright figure's journey through the forest himself. He was undeniably alive, and quite fit at that. It also seemed that whoever the stranger was, he was headed in a similar direction as himself. The cause of the strange occurances he'd heard of, perhaps? Regardless, the time had come to make himself known.

As he began to move towards the stranger slowly, silently, white flames sprouted to life around him, obscuring any chance to see through it. He raised a hand slowly, and spoke in a tone of sweetened lies and twisted truths as his undead began to flank him slowly. "Hail, traveller. I apologize if I upset you, but it's not safe to travel too far around here alone. That's why I've brought my friends..." He waved at them slowly, before bowing just slightly; even through the flames, he could be seen as a tall figure, towering over many others at just over 7 feet. "If you'd let me, I'd be pleased to help you find whatever it is you seek."

The shadowy figure continued to walk through the forests, unmolested by anyone or anything. But it would not last, for the figure knew that. He knew now that the spiders were wondering what to do next... a head on approach had not walked so what of a stealthy approach perhaps? He knew this because he had studied the spiders of Spiderhaunt before he began his training as a Witch hunter all those years ago. But he had little time to lose himself in his thoughts before more troubles came forth. Someone had entered the area, he was sure of it. Not a spider: because his ring was beginning to glow and vibrate oh so lightly. That only happened when someone undead entered the area.

The Witch hunter stopped and took his crossbow again, emptying the cartridge that held the remaining two bolts and replaced them with light bolts that he kept in a separate bolt quiver on his person. His fingers performed this ancient operation that he had been doing for many years, it was an operation that he could do in his sleep. Soon, the crossbow was fully loaded and the Witch Hunter waited. A bright white fire appeared in the area, and one could see a figure somewhere in the flames. The pendant around the hunters neck also began to glow at this magical feat, as it did when any magic was used in the area. From behind the fire, a chilling voice spoke...

"Hail, traveller. I apologize if I upset you, but it's not safe to travel too far around here alone. That's why I've brought my friends..."

The figure gestured to the sides of the Witch Hunter. The Witch Hunter wondered why someone would give away the element of surprise like that? It was a stupid mistake and one he would not let this intruder get away with. Rydan clenched his ringed fist, as if he was going to throw a punch, and pointed it at the fire. It glowed as bright as the sun. That meant whomever used those fires to mask himself was undead... and only one type of undead was intelligent enough to speak like a human.

A lich.

It only took a few seconds for the witch hunter to decide that the friends that the lich talked about where undead. If he were to drop the lich now, he would destroy the control of his 'friends'. And with that decision, the witch hunter let loose all five bolts of light from his crossbow in rapid succession in the direction of the white fire...

The softest of smirks could be heard as the lich's hand slid from the cloak. He waved it through the air slowly, causing three of Rydan's arrows to strike the ground before even reaching the lich. "If you're going to shoot someone, don't make them so close together; just makes them easier to destroy." The two remaining bolts were already moving too quickly for Yaksha to stop them, and so he lowered his hands to his side, waiting for the inevitable to happen. He even began to chuckle as the bolts struck his corona of flames, seeming to slow down drastically the moment they passed through them. Yaksha's gloved hands rose quickly, batting both bolts away, and giving a hiss of pain as the truth struck him. Holy bolts! He must be a paladin of some sort...

Yaksha's flames receeded quickly, leaving, surprisingly enough, a tall human standing before Rydan. He cocked his head just slightly, his raven-black hair trailing to his waist as he spoke again, this time with something between insulted pain, and curiousness. "Now, was that really necessary? Couldn't you simply have introduced yourself as well, and then there would've been no need to waste your ammunition." He ran a hand over his cloak, his words making it seem almost impolite to attack him so hastily. The skin was surprisingly pale, and there seemed not even the slightest hint of undeath on him. "My friends may be undead, but as you can plainly see, I don't even LOOK the part." His wry smile seemed almost to taunt Rydan, for being so quick to judge.

(Lesser gravity shift to make anything in a 3 square foot area 3 times as heavy, then brilliant corona to reduce the damage done by up to 5 attacks a day to 1/4th the intended amount. If there are any problems, I'm happy to edit.)

The first three bolts fell to the ground like lead weights, but the other two arrows hit the lich and burnt his hands when he tried to swat them away. It seemed like this creature had powers over gravity and was able to increase it in a certain radius. The witch hunter made a note of that as his fingers did their reloading trick. This time, he placed in three explosive bolts and two more light bolts. The fires died down and behind them was a raven haired humanoid figure.

"Now, was that really necessary? Couldn't you simply have introduced yourself as well, and then there would've been no need to waste your ammunition. My friends may be undead, but as you can plainly see, I don't even LOOK the part."

He may not have looked undead but the ring never lied, and it still glowed at this stranger's appearance. The witch hunter had heard of lich's who had crossed over so much to the darkness, sacrificing many a soul, that they had managed to fully reform their body. A difficult thing to achieve indeed. The wry smile this lich was giving was an attempt to rile up the hunter and make him retaliate. But it failed, for the witch hunter would not fall for such beginner attempts.

Instead, he raised his fully reloaded crossbow and fired all five bolts again. First the three explosive bolts came forth, and then the two light bolts.

Even as Rydan continued reloading his crossbow, Yaksha sighed softly, grabbing at the hood of his cloak and pulling it over his head. As he did, stone quickly began to travel across his body as if it were some sort of virus. Within moments, his entire body was encased by stone, just in time for the three explosive bolts to strike him. Surprisingly, not even the slightest scratch could be seen in his stone shell after the explosion, and the two holy bolts bounced off harmlessly. The moment they had struck, his body began to flex, causing the stone to flake off like scales from a snake, and the hood to slip back down. "You know, there's no virtue in something like this. I offered to assist you, and you repay me by attacking me."

The lich snapped his fingers quickly, causing the crossbow in Rydan's hand to strike the ground, making a clunk much louder than one would expect from such an object. Had he bothered to load the crossbow yet, there was a fair chance they would've discharged blindly when it landed, perhaps even harming the zealot himself. Yaksha was already approaching, smiling warmly as he grew closer. "My boy, this is futile. I could've crushed you beneath my feet before you ever knew I was here, could've made you cease to be in any of a dozen ways. But I DIDN'T. Because I don't care for senseless violence, or bloodshed." His wry smile turned almost into a sneer now, as he almost spat his last words. "And you still style yourself a good man."

The witch hunter watched as the bolts exploded, but his foe had anticipated the attack and had protected himself with some sort of enchantment that turned him to stone. He was unharmed and, what was worse, the lich also managed to disarm the witch hunter using his gravity magic. He was a powerful foe, there was no doubt about it. But the witch hunter was stubborn in the sense that he would not give up. He would find a way past this creature's defences and exploit his weakness. His weakness was that he talked too much, that he wanted the witch hunter to believe his lies so badly that he would not attack. And so the witch hunter would exploit that weakness.

Immediately, he wrapped his cloak around his body and looked at his foe dead in the eye. The hunter still had plenty of weapons to use and would not go down without a fight. Indeed, the Lich was now coming closer and closer, coming out of the darkness as he continued to spread his lies:

"My boy, this is futile. I could've crushed you beneath my feet before you ever knew I was here, could've made you cease to be in any of a dozen ways. But I DIDN'T. Because I don't care for senseless violence, or bloodshed."

Getting closer... closer...

"And you still style yourself a good man."

Closer... almost within striking range.

Yaksha loomed over the man, still smiling infuriatingly, and standing just outside the human's range of attack without his bow. "Wouldn't you at least humor me with a name? Simply because we're fighting, that needn't mean we can't observe the niceities." He slowly shifted into another plane of sight as he spoke, one that could peirce straight through inanimate objects such as his clothing, revealing hidden weapons or the such. His smirk grew even wider; there seemed to be a stiletto hidden in his sleeve, no doubt ready to stab him if he grew too close. But there was no need to let the man knew he was aware of this hidden weapon, so he took another step forward, his honeyed words battering against the stranger's walls of paranoia.

"Don't I deserve the benefit of the doubt? I've been nothing but kind to you, and yet you treat me like some sort of monster. You even convinced yourself that you could slay me so easily? Let me explain something to you..." He leaned closer, the scent of blood and jasmine rolling off of him in strong waves. "I am echelons above you, and you're of no more threat to me than a squirrel is to a wolf. But I've humoured your still tongue and your attacks long enough. Speak, if you can. Else I may lose my temper."
