| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

No birds, no crickets, no natural sounds could be heard. That in and of itself unnerved Alena, but not enough that she would leave. She'd heard stories of horrifying creatures here in the Hauntwood, and she wanted to see if it was true. But so far, all she'd seen were perfectly normal creatures. She sighed, and shook her head. "Looks like the rumors are all lies," she said, and turned, ready to head back out of the marsh to go back to where she HAD been, and go back to Sain from there. Her house was finally finished, and now she was going to take him there to offer him the spare room she had, or even a spot in her bed if he prefered it. She sighed again, and then looked around. "So this was a wasted trip," she said. |

WHY?! Bloody hell, WHY?! Another sword lost! Master Seacrumb was NOT going to be pleased AT ALL that Greevil had lost YET ANOTHER one of his prized short swords to the muck and mud of the Hauntwood Marsh. What was it about this damned swamp that seemed to make it swallow up every flaming thing that went into it! At least he wasn't getting lost anymore; the cave was almost impossible to find and he'd spent four days out here the first time Gretchen and her bleeding idiot of a husband had wanted another badger's head for their blasted spells. CURSE THEM! Oh, if only he could. But Greevil was a bard, not a shaman. Then again, he could point out that he wasn't a fetching boy either - if he wanted to lose his head (literally). Of course, losing his head might be the very LEAST of his worries should he decide not to heed the words of the goblin king's oh-so-trusted peons - er, advisors. Yeah...he called them 'advisors' now, and all for what? So some damned HUMAN could give him a few extra rubies? What was their deal, anyway? Was the king reduced to the role of fetching boy himself? Who was really pulling the strings now? Bah! It wasn't his concern. As the goblin bard trudged his way across one of the drier islands in the swamp - for that's what it was, no matter what its fancy name was - he returned his thoughts to how he would explain that he had lost another sword. He hadn't even gotten the badger this time. "Stupid Gretchen," he muttered in a low tone, "and her stupid husband. They not bestest shamanses, so why they get bestest jobs? When I get wife, I gonna pull strings - not other way 'round. Stupid shamanses. Gorblok was bestest shaman but now he dead." His muttering continued on unintelligbly for some time before it stopped as abruptly as his feet did - almost spilling him over into the blasted mud. He cursed quietly, but then listened. Rumors? What rumors? Wait...that was a human voice! Flaming humanses! His mood soured even more as he nocked an arrow to his bowstring and stomped forward, the sickening sounds of mud being sloshed about while trying to suck his feet down unfortunately marking his position - but he didn't particularly care at that point. "STUPID HUMANSES!" Greevil shouted as he came to within about twenty feet of the girl. "What you doing in swamp?! What you want? HUH?!" He was dangerously close to firing that bow, his shaft loosing forth at a blinding rate to strike the girl down. In her death, he would find at least SOME satisfaction. But maybe she could be useful...bah! He would see! |

But her usefulness was immediately called into question as he found himself staring down another arrow, pointed right at his throat. There had been a flurry of motion when he shouted, and the shortbow in her hand was obviously elven quality, but it was clear she was no human. She hissed at him, her eyes narrowed, one squinted shut as she sighted down the shaft with the other. "Either lower your weapon, or I bury this arrow in your THROAT," she said in a commanding tone, her face twisting into a fierce grin, one that showed that she would take great pleasure in killing him. "Destroyer and usurper, slayer of trees, I would strike you down now if I could be sure that I would be able to get out of here in time. But unlike my dryad cousins, I cannot travel by the trees." She smiled more. "Now. Lower the weapon. Or this arrow is deadly. Because I've never missed yet," she finished, pulling the string all the way back to her cheek. |

WHAT?! This was no human! What was she?! Not an elf either, though. He was thankful for that; he HATED elves! But it didn't matter much WHAT she was with an arrow stuck in his throat. She comes into HIS swamp, invades HIS territory, and has the gall to insult HIM?! Was she mad?! She must have been, but maybe not completely mad. So she thought there were others? Good! He could use that to his very great advantage against her. He brushed the bow aside as he stepped back, his own lowered but an arrow still nocked. "Bah! You think I be here if I alone?! You in our swamp! This our place! You not insult me here or you die, stupid creature! You not know where you at! What you want with us? HUH?!" His glare was one that made most people stop and think about what they were doing, if only because he did look rather fierce wearing it. Perhaps this was not an elf or a human, but she talked about trees. What kind of creature moved THROUGH trees? What in the nine hells WAS this woman?! Was she some kind of demon? A nature-person perhaps? Nature-persons...what were they called again? They were always fighting people with lightning and fire and animals and vines. Bah! Whatever they were, she might be one. But it didn't matter; as long as she thought there were others hiding nearby - which there might very well be, now that he thought about it - he was relatively safe. |

She shook her head, bringing the bow back to bear on him until he lowered his. Then hers came down, but her hand gripped it tightly, keeping the arrow on the string. She shook her head. "Your swamp? I have every right to be here. There are trees here, the same as your people are here. Trees are my family. My blood. I am a wood nymph after all." She gave a soft call, one that would sound like a surprised intake of breath. But it gave the desired effect. She saw a pair of yellow eyes wink just above and behind him a distance, and she smiled. "Besides. You kill me, I have friends here that would make your life a living hell," she said, buying time for her friend to get into place. When she saw the yellow eyes flash again, she giggled. "For instance. The friend that is right behind you and you never knew he was there," she said, as the panther came out from behind the bush to stand right behind the goblin, fangs bared, eyes glowing bright yellow as he rumbled deep in his throat. |

The goblin snorted. He'd never heard of a wood nymph. She probably really WAS an elf, which made her just as hated as any other elf. At least the drow knew how to get things done, but the stupid surface elves didn't know anything. They just pretended to know things. They were stupid, even stupider than they said goblinses were! Stupid elveses. But she was lowering her bow. That was good. He didn't show any difference in his expression, but he mentally sighed in relief. Then she spoke of some damned friend. Bah! What friends did she have? He wasn't scare of her OR her friends. But she said something was right behind him. Right behind him, eh? Yeah, right. What did she know! She was probably just bluffing, just like he was! But she didn't know he was bluffing. No, she COULDN'T know! It was IMPOSSIBLE for her to know! And whatever friends she MIGHT have wouldn't know either! She was dumb! "Stupid elf! I not know about wood stuff, but you got no friends! You stranger here, and you threaten me with stupid friends! You gonna kill me in own home? Huh? This my home. You just tryin' ta scare me, maybe take my weapons and leave me here." Elves were bad people. They always tried to take advantage of goblins! They always tried to trick them and beat them and kill them and tell them to go somewhere else! It was their fault goblins had to steal and murder! The elves wouldn't let them have anything! And this one was stupid if she thought he was gonna back off. |

At the beginning of his tirade, a boiling rage reared its ugly head within her chest, and she snarled at him. "I told you, you foul, loathsome, traitorous, tree killing MONSTER! I AM NOT AN ELF!" She brought her hand swishing down, and the panther pounced, pinning the goblin to the ground on his face. She walked over to him, kicking his bow and arrows aside, and then placed a foot against his neck. "Now that I have your attention, let me make this CLEAR to you. I am no elf. I am a NYMPH. Cousin of dryads, satyrs, and EXTREMELY distant cousin to the thinblooded elves. They have lost their touch with what they once were. "And if you EVER accuse me of being such a thing again, well, you won't have to worry about whether or not your friends really are here. I know they're not. My friend would have made noise if they had, because he would have found them," she said, her statement punctuated as the panther rumbled at him. "So let's stop the lying shall we? I am a nymph. A fey, if that concept isn't too difficult for your pea sized brain to comprehend," she said. |

He was shocked as he was suddenly slammed into the ground, growling behind him signaling that she wasn't lying about the 'friend'. And okay, so she wasn't an elf. Fine. One less thing to hate in HIS swamp. Yes, it was HIS swamp - his and the other goblins'. This stupid creature didn't belong here. But it didn't matter with a giant black cat trying to crush all the air out of him. Now his eyes showed fear. His bow was gone, just out of reach of his greenish-brown hand. "What you want?! What you want from me?! Why you attack me?! I not do nothin' to you! I not attack you! You come here like this your place when we do things here! We live here! Why you come here and attack me! My friends be angry! They come and kill you! Let me up! LET ME UP, LET ME UP!" The way Greevil saw it, she had invaded goblin territory. Even orcs weren't that stupid unless they had an army, and there hadn't been a goblin-orc war in over two centuries; even then, it was the elves' fault. They had perpetrated the whole thing, made the orcs fight the goblins! They'd given them gold and such! But this was different. This was one fight against a stupid woman who thought she owned the swamp. She didn't own the swamp; the goblins owned the swamp! It was THEIR swamp, not HERS! He started flailing as the giant cat held him down, unable to properly breathe. If he was pinned like this for much longer, he'd be dead and the goblins would see it as an attack by elves whether the stupid woman was one or not. |

She sighed, and waved her hand, shaking her head softly. "Let me explain something to you," she said, as the panther stepped back off of him. "This swamp belongs to NO ONE. Anyone can come here if they so choose." She sighed, and shook her head. "So if I were you, I wouldn't be so possessive," she said, stepping back from him and shaking her head. "Now, if you don't mind, I'll be going now," she said, and turned on her heel and walked off. "Oh, and don't even THINK of following me," she said. "If you do, my friend will know, and you will be his lunch." The panther yawned, fangs exposed as slightly elongated for a length of time. Then he padded off behind her, one claw digging into the goblin's foot, yowling as he walked away after Alena. |

He finally got up and scrambled for the trees several feet away. He picked up his bow as he went and turned around with his back to the massive twisted trunks of blackened bark and evil-looking roots. He yelped and hopped around holding his foot as the stupid cat trampled on it. Then he got angry - again. The cat's back was to him, its tail swishing arrogantly as it left him behind. The first arrow had been snapped by the impact with the ground, muddy though it was, and it was a wonder the goblin hadn't been impaled. But now he nocked another arrow. "So that it, huh? You just threaten and leave! You coward! You like cockroack, comin' an' tryin' ta push me around! You not walk away from me without sayin' you sorry!" Now the goblin had the upper hand, for he knew the cat was there and he knew this place very well indeed. Plus, he could climb. Cats couldn't climb. And even if the cat had magic, it couldn't get through branches and limbs to the places Greevil could. Greevil was small and could get into tight spaces. The cat was really big. It couldn't follow Greevil if Greevil went into the trees. |

But THIS cat made it clear JUST how bad an idea that would be, as it turned, and charged right back at the goblin, this time maw aiming for the bow itself, fangs flashing. The cat was quickly followed by another arrow, and Alena was now standing, legs spread, eyes narrowed, another arrow nocked as the first one succeeded in stopping the panther. "Now let me make something abundantly clear. You came and bothered me. I was just walking and wandering. If you wish to continue this fight, then I am more than willing to continue. But know this first. I will not rest until you and all your family are dead if you persist in this foolishness." She shook her head, and spoke in Sylvan, and the cat slinked back to her side. "Now. I ask you kindly, leave me be, and go back to your home. I do not like killing, as it goes against the laws of nature to me," she said. "But if you persist, I will have to break my own code. Please, do not make me do this. I do not like killing ANYTHING, for ANY reason, be they good or bad, pretty or ugly." |

The goblin grinned menacingly, readying itself for a sudden leap to the side. Just behind Greevil stood an ancient oak, huge and very solid, while to the sides were a couple of black pines; the trees truly did look black and bent over, as though tortured until they could no longer stand proudly as they had for so very long. The pines provided only minimal protection, but even a magical panther could not have possibly twisted fast enough in mid-leap to have avoided the oak and chased after Greevil. That was Greevil's plan. Even if the panther recovered quickly, Greevil would be long-gone by the time it did; he would probably be in the trees by the time it found him with its heightened feline senses. The arrow that flew nearly made Greevil leap to the side prematurely in a vain attempt to save his hideous green flesh, but a flinch was all the stupid girl from the goblin as the arrow landed in the marshy soil just ten feet before Greevil and to his left. The panther stopped just short of the arrow and then slinked back toward its master as she spoke, leaving Greevil's disappointed features to turn toward the woman with the bow. Now another arrow as nocked and she was bragging about how she hated killing things; this only made Greevil grin more broadly, especially when she mentioned killing him and his family. In fact, he cackled gleefully at this last before responding with supreme confidence. "My family? You kill them? You kill five hundred goblins 'fore they kill you?!" With that, Greevil was practically doubled over in derisive laughter that sounded more like a half-dead cat being strangled mingled with the screaming of a dying badger than anything else. When the laughter finally began to subside, he still had controlling himself and kept giggling at the very thought that a lone archer with a panther could kill his entire family tree (and a large tree it was, too; the number was actually closer to twelve hundred members than five hundred, but he wasn't about to tell her that as it would take away an advantage from him) before they managed to fill her full of bloody holes. "Methinks you not too bright. We guards of swamp, just like you claim to be forest guard. You come here and cause trouble, we cause trouble back. You not take us down so easily," he said as he chortled yet again. |
