Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Pattin stopped, pressing his back against the cool stone wall, feeling the sweaty shirt cling to his back. One short-fingered hand grabbed at the hair on the back of his neck for a handhold, trying to catch his breath. The pickpocket was out of shape, he hadn't been about for a while, having come across a small fortune while traveling.

Standing straight after a couple moments, Pattin pulled his hat out of his pocket, smoothing out the wrinkles and jamming it on his head. He loved his brown hat, stolen from a newsboy in Taras. Before the demon attack, of course. Nobody needed the news in the middle of a warzone. Chances are you know the headlines anyway.

The halfling lifted his occupied left hand as he walked, running his fingers through the pouch of flawed gems. They weren't worth as much as carved gems, but it was just as good.

A bounce in his step, the halfling picked his way down the street, just passing the stables.

Aurea walked through the stables, glancing around at the horses stalled on either side of her. She sighed, eyeing a particularly spectacular chestnut male with longing before looking away. Having a mount would make life easier as she'd be able to travel from place to place faster and then she'd also be able to practice her mounted combat. However, she had no where to keep it. Her home was, at the moment, a room she had rented from the inn for an 'extended period' and she really didn't want to leave any horse she got in the public stables. It just wouldn't seem right.

She sighed again then headed out of the stables, shoving her hands into her pockets as she went. She had to pause right after she left, blinking her eyes repeatedly against the sunlight that was blinding after being inside a building with low lighting. When her pupils finally contracted she started walking again.

Yes, she couldn't, or wouldn't rather, be getting a horse today but at least it was a lovely day. It was starting to warm up thankfully, no longer the bone chilling cold of dead winter but instead a slightly numbing chill if one was outside for too long

Pattin kicked a rock, watching it skid for a second before hitting a bump and soaring a foot in the air before landing in a haystack. Pattin noted the haystack as a woman strode from the stables, freezing in place to adjust to the sudden change in lighting. Pattin had no time to think, pure instinct took over. And a touch of kleptomania.

Pulling his dagger out smoothly, he ran by her and cut at a pouch at her belt, taking off forward a bit before turning a full circle and running to the side, around and behind a house. He crouched behind a rock, catching his breath, then stood and ran back towards the stables.

Bare feet slapped the paved road as pattin struggled with his last breath, crouching and leaping at the haystack. Unfortunately, the hay had gotten wet and held a fairly tough exterior. Pulling up the layer, he dove under and pulle it over himself, one large foot sticking out of the stack.

By the time she heard the slap of feet against the ground, it was already too late. She tensed, a hand reaching for her sword but by then, a short little...midget? A short little midget of a man had darted off with one of her pouches. She didn't even bother to see which pouch it was that he'd stolen, the simple fact that he had taken from her pissed her off to no end.

He'd had a head start, yes, but Aurea was in better shape that he was. She took off after him, her long-legged stride easily eating up the distance between them. She got close enough to see him spin around and turn off to go behind a house. By the time she got there, however, he'd already hidden and she stopped, looking around in silence. A moment later she heard the heavy breathing start up again and she turned in time to see him lunge out from behind a rock and race off towards the stables.

As it had been before, by the time she got there he was no where to be seen. Or was he? A feral smile stretched across her face and she stalked over to the hay stack, her blue gray eyes focused on the boot sticking out. When she was close enough she reached out and latched onto his foot and gave it a good hard jerk that was meant to pull him out.

"I believe you have something that belongs to me," she growled.

Pattin gave off a yelp as he felt a hand close around his bare ankle, pulling him free with a surprisingly strong jerk. He slid out of the haystack swiftly, feeling several straws itching his back. The halfling sneezed, the woman's pouch still in hand. Rubbing his face, The short man stood, looking at her full in the face, fists on his hips.

“Nonsense.” He said unbelievingly, tugging open the strings and looking inside curiously. His eyes shot wide, one little hand diving in and pulling out a piece of black worthlessness. Fondling the coal, he fumed. Rolling it around in his little hand, he kept his body between it and her. “What? It's a lump of coal!” He protested, licking it. His face was sucked in, spitting black. “Why do you have it?” He said wondrously, turning the pouch over. “Is it magic? Or are you just mad?”

The halfling jumped back a couple steps, inspecting the lump of coal. He shook it around violently, holding his ear to it to see if there was anything inside.

What had originally looked like a midget turned out to be a Halfling and when he stood with his hands on his hips, Aurea looked down and glared at him. She held back her shock when she realized that the pouch he had taken wasn't her gold pouch, as she'd originally thought and was instead the pouch holding her sleeping Mushi. She swore silently to herself when he pulled it out and fervently hoped that the baby dragon wouldn't wake up.

The hand that had already been grasping the hilt of her short sword clenched when the Halfling licked the coal. "Maybe I am a little touched but either way," she growled at him, taking a step forward for every step he took back. "It's mine and I'd like it back."

If she'd thought that she had trouble before when he licked it, it was nothing compared to what she felt when he shook it violently. Her knuckles turned white and she drew the sword so that a few inches of steel were revealed. She took another few steps forward until she was towering over him. "Give it back now."

“I don't doubt it in the least, lass.” He said, eyebrows high as she squeezed her hilt harder, taking sure steps toward him. Had she asked nicely, he probably would have given it back, it was a lump of coal and she had caught him. But his pride was at stake, making this lump that much more valuable.

Looking up at her curiously as she drew steel. He'd only shaken it... Unless there was something in it? The halfling tapped it, stopping altogether when she stood over him. Her tone wounded his pride. She thought she could bully him around because he was short! The halfling sniffed, leaning forward towards her thigh.

Letting loose with a strong kick at her shins, pattin spun and dashed off, rounded belly shaking with each step, gasping for air. He'd have to work off all the extra fat. Or maybe he'd let it go. He wasn't particularly motivated to burn it away.

His arms swung at his sides comically, rounding a corner and diving through a door into someone's home, scrambling into a cupboard.

Aurea watched the Halfling, studying his face closely and she could practically see as the wheels in his head were turning and she swore silently. She'd over played it; he was realizing that there was something special about the coal. She watched as he tapped it, and she decided that he thought that there was something inside it not that the coal itself was the prize. She knew she didn't have much longer, there was no way Mushi would be able to sleep through all of this. She had to get her back before she changed otherwise there was no telling what the Halfling would do.

She cursed loud and vehemently when he swung out and kicked her in the shin. It wasn't the worst pain she'd felt, it was more of a sharp, annoying sting, but it was enough to distract her. She took off after him a moment later, rounding the corner in time to see a house door swing shut. She pushed the door open, stepping inside the house carefully and she looked around her. This time the man had done better, there was nothing hanging out to alert her to his position.

She swore again before forcing herself to calm down, taking a few deep breaths. "Look, I'm sorry for being mean to you and threatening you but you took something of mine that I would dearly like returned."

Pattin sighed as she spoke. He was dead curious as to what was in the lump however that she valued so much that she'd run after him through a town trying to get it back. It looked like a lump of coal, but then again maybe it was magical.

The halfling tried to move his arm to open the door, failing to move that far. He'd swollen in the heat somewhat, unable to get out. He was stuck. Growling, he headbutted the inside of the door, clipping a screw. The door swumg open, revealing a dazed halfling.

Grumbling, he looked at Aurea. “You'll have to help me free if you want it back.” He looked away ashamedly, trying to wiggle his way free.

She heard a growl and a thud and Aurea shifted to look in the direction that the sounds had come from. She eyed a set of cabinets, moving a few steps closer. Surely the Halfling wouldn't have given himself away by doing that, would he? Unless it was a trick to get her close enough to hit her with the doors. She jumped back when the door swung open and then she had to suppress her laugh. The Halfling had somehow managed to get himself stuck.

"Of course, in return for assisting you in getting yourself out, you will give me my coal back," she clarified before moving forward and dropping to her knees in front of the cabinet. She wrapped one hand around his arm, the other grabbing a fistful of fabric and she tugged hard, trying to pull him free.

“I'll consider it. Just get me out of here.” He grumbled, clenching the lump of coal in his left hand. Feeling her hand close around his shirt, he yelped as she pulled him out. With a grating sound, the front of the cabinet broke away, releasing him. The halfling went sprawling onto the woman.

Getting up, he began to run, making it halfway to the door before he stopped, eyes clenched shut. Holding his hand out to her, he offered the lump of coal, face similar to one he would be wearing if he were giving over a treasure in gold.

The front of the cabinets broke away with a grating sound and Aurea found herself on the floor with the halfling sprawled across her. She let out a grunt, momentarily dazed as her head had smacked the floor when they fell back. She shook her head, trying to refocus.

By the time she did manage to, however, the halfling was up and running towards the door. She swore, roughly pushing herself up to her feet and lunging after him. She should have known better than to trust him, she thought as she berated herself but then he reluctantly stopped halfway to the door.

She slowed to a stop as he did and she eyed him suspiciously. The look on his face convinced her that he wasn't trying to trick her again, so she moved forward to gently take the lump of coal away. She stroked it, crooning softly. If she was lucky, Mushi wouldn't wake up for awhile yet.

Aurea looked back to the halfling and, after debating with herself, she finally sighed. "How about we head over to the tavern and I buy you a drink?" She might as well try and be nice to him, after all, he had stopped himself from running away.

Pattin watched the woman croon to the lump of coal. He was now immensely interested. It must be something valuable after all. By this point the scheming thief was sure that something was inside the coal. But that was a mystery for another day.

After all, she just offered to buy a drink.

Pattin squealed with delight and fixed his hat, trying to gather himself. “I'll have to take your offer.” He said, almost as if he didn't usually go for a drink and was giving her a treat. “It's been a good while.” He smiled, corners of his mouth nearly touching his ears.

Aurea kept the coal cradled in one hand even as she gestured for the halfling to proceed her out the door. That's right, she didn't know the man's name, she thought as she followed him out of the random person's house. "My name's Aurea, what's yours?" Maybe if she was lucky they'd end up being friends of a sort, which would hopefully mean he wouldn't try to steal from her again.

When they got to the tavern, she headed inside. Luckly for them, it was only around midday so there weren't that many people inside. In fact, there were only three other people inside the tavern besides them so there was an abundance of free tables. She chose one towards the back corner, sitting in the chair that would put her back against the wall.

Pattin smiled at Aurea, pleased she wasn't trying to cut off his fingers like some other people he knew. “Pattin J. Lightfoot.” He bowed a little. “Don't ask what the J stands for and we'll get along fine.” He chuckled, but a serious look in his eye. His middle name always bothered him.

As the two walked into the tavern and picked out a seat, Pattin watched the bartender. As he passed him, the man chuckled at Aurea, then looked at pattin. 'Pat! Come to clean out my stores again?' The man asked cheerily, chuckling.

Pattin had a fair reputation in many taverns.
