Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Yaksha sat in his home, covered from head to toe in heavy clothing as his undead shuffled from room to room, carrying things or tearing things from rooms. He himself watched carefully, the darkness of his hood obscuring any peek of his face as he watched them. He waved a gloved hand, and 8 undead men quickly fell into line before him, staring ahead with blank eyes. Yaksha pushed himself from his chair, and walked towards the closest one, pushing his head up carefully, and examining him. "Beginning to rot already. We'll need to find some fresh...transplants. Gods know you could all use a tune-up."

He waved the undead away, and began to laugh softly, slouching forward as he spoke. "We've a guest coming soon, do your best to make things ready before she gets here. Can't have anyone thinking I'm a bad host." He sat back down in his chair, and began to hum softly to himself as he did. The tune itself sounded quite upbeat and cheerful, but anyone who knew the song it spawned from would feel nothing of the sort.

Yaksha had sent a note to Lehona Palewind, one very short and without any real sophistication. He let out a small laugh as he reminisced on it, reciting what was written quickly.
"Lehona Palewind-
I want you to come meet me personally. Consider me a close friend. I'd appreciate it if you came as soon as possible. If you're not here within 24 hours of reading this, I can't be held accountable for what happens. Please don't disappoint.
Sincerely,
-Y"

Standing alone in the night, Lehona quietly opened the letter that had arrived to her by messenger and began to read it again. Her long white leather cloak and long, dark unrestrained hair billowed silently behind her in the steady cool breeze. Her eyes scanned along the scrolling letters with the half moon hanging high in the blackened sky giving enough light to reveal her surroundings. She and her attired contrasted against the darkness of trees and undergrowth.

Suddenly, the silence of the night was broken by the rustling of the paper as she folding the letter and stowed it away into the depths of her cloak. She knew not why she had come to the call of a mysterious message, but she had. It was absurd, when she though of it now, and dangerous. There was no reason, no relation to her everyday life that would bring her to this place otherwise. If Lehona had been a more cautious woman she would have saw it all as an elaborate ambush. The innocent moving toward an unseen attack.

But, she was a very cautious woman. Instead she continued toward her destination, taking determined steps to help convince herself that it had not been foolish of her to come all this way. She told herself that it was not naive to visit with a man or woman that you only knew by the name of Y as she stood in front of the moonlit house before her. Her emerald eyes stared down onto the steps that stood between her and the door as if these last few strides would be the hardest of them all. With a great intake of breath, she mounted the first stair and kept putting one foot in front of the other until she was close enough to knock.

Lehona held onto her breath as her pale white hand nervously reached for the knocker, taking the cool metal into her hand. Closing her eyes briefly to calm herself, she banged the knocker hard against the wood three times. As the loudness of the sound echoed in her ears, she took a few steps back to wait. Soon, the cryptic letter would be explained, soon she would know why she had been asked to meet Y and why Y couldn't be held accountable if she didn't. Letting her breath go, Lehona wasn't sure if she was really ready for this at all.

Before Lehona stood something more befitting a temple than a home. The steps to the door glowed a haunting green, almost seeming alive and malicious. It seemed to be made of an odd stone that hummed with dark energies every second. Skulls of granite had been carved out of the face of the rock, making the entire home seem malicious, and even alive. Over the door, written in a dark red, almost black liquid, were the words: "Here There Be Monsters". Above the home, several odd curves had formed, seeming almost like bladed tentacles. At the apex, a small blue orb spun lazily, filling the air with a worrying quality.

As Lehona knocked on the door, it swung inward silently, the only sound in the air a soft groan from the man by it. His eyes were glazed, and his lips opened and closed several times, as if attempting to say something. A voice rang out from nearby, sounding surprisingly polite and kind in the odd situation. "What have I told you? At LEAST make an effort at civility." The man's head swivelled to the voice, then turned back to Lehona slowly. He let out a low, cracked, and almost tortured cry as he 'spoke'. "Hee-llooooo..."

As the creature spoke, a silhouette appeared behind it, looming quite tall, easily seven feet, though he looked almost fatally thin. "Come in, come in. I'm very sorry about the help. It's really the best I can do at this point." He held out a gloved hand, and laughed warmly. "The master is quite keen on meeting you, and he doesn't like being kept waiting." His voice was soft, warm, mellifluous, and flowed from his lips like warmed honey. "I apologize if there was any inconvenience. Must have been hard to get here." He sat down in a nearby chair, and waved her at another one. "Please, sit down dear."

"Yes, of course." Lehona said quietly, allowing herself to be guided into the room and took the seat that he offered her without question. Her eyes had been caught wide at the creature who had answered the door and the way he stuttered and stammered before he spoke. And now her eyes roamed around the room curiously, taking in all that there was to see. For a few moments, she forgot that she wasn't alone as she noted the intricate pieces of the room. The chairs here, the ceiling, the walls. Oddly, she was not made to feel uncomfortable even though she was sure there was something strange about this place altogether.

"So the Master would be?" Her voice was high. The question hung in her throat even after she asked it. Her eyes stolen away, kept from the company that joined her by curiosity for her surroundings. She felt safe with him, though if asked she could not begin to describe it. There was no rigidity in the way she sat, no worry. Lehona had given him an unspoken trust which would not be broken without some ill action on his part.

Part of her went back to the greeting above the entrance: "Here There Be Monsters". The man that answered the door was not appear as normal humans do. Somehow he came across as distorted from the norm, Lehona could not quite say why. And then the second who had been extremely polite and spoken of this Y person. He was obscenely tall, taller than anyone she had ever met before. Perhaps there were such things as monsters..

The man rose from the chair, his tall body sticking out at odd angles and seeming to rebel against the cloak. His voice was soft and harmless, but also seemed somewhat menacing and abnormal. "The master is me, Lady Palewind. You may call me Yaksha, lord of the dead." He held out a single gloved hand, and a woman walked forward, looking much like the first man she had seen, carrying a quill. She slid it into his hand clumsily, and he quickly sat back down, scribbling on a sheet of paper, almost as if he didn't notice her.

After a minute of silence, he slid the paper towards her, a perfect copy of the letter she had received. He folded his hands in his lap as he leaned forward, his voice quiet and soft. "I'm sorry for threatening you, but I really couldn't take the chance you wouldn't come." He placed his palms on the table now, and then looked at her. "I've heard news of your birthday party. How old would one such as yourself be? 60? 70?" He waved his hand dismissively, and sighed. "Sorry, that was really impolite on my part. I should know better than to ask a lady's age by now."

This really couldn't be, she thought to herself. This all didn't make any sense to the half-elf as she sat and watched the man before her scribble an exact replica to match the letter she had received. Still she disbelieved, but now only a little. Confusion more than anything made off like a whirlwind through her mind.

Lehona opened and closed her mouth several times while she tried to find the words to form her next question. But there were so many now that tumbled together in her mind, that she was instead resolved into silence. Nervously, she shifted in her chair, which she found to be rather comfortable given the situation.

After a few heartbeats of silence, Lehona spoke quietly. "So am I or am I not in any sort of danger, Lord Yaksha?" Bewilderment weighed heavy in her tone as she demanded an answer. Sitting very still before him, her head turned in a very cautious manner, Lehona was sure to keep an eye on him and another on the hallway where the odd woman had both entered from and disappeared.

Yaksha almost reeled from her question, his voice sounding offended. "Oh, Lady Palewind, your words wound me. I'm a gracious host, and you're in no sort of danger so long as you don't bring any upon yourself." He held out a gloved hand, his voice mellifluous and irresistable. For the moment, he sounded like a divine creature, something beautiful and utterly impossible to deny. "I wanted to meet you, Lady Palewind. Surely you wouldn't deny me that simple pleasure."

He rose from the chair, clapping his gloved hands delightedly, and then let out a cry of joy. "Well, then, I think it's about time for a meal! Surely you'd be hungry after coming so far out here. And one such as myself would never deny a woman a small pleasure." He strode confidently into the kitchen, his voice floating nonchalantly back towards her. It sounded carefree, but also held a hint of lasciviousness. "So long without a man. You must be very...lonely, Lady Palewind." The sheer word lonely seemed to be charged with more symbolism than any woman could ignore. "Would you perhaps like to stay the night?"

Taking his offered hand in her own, she found that she was still puzzled by what was implied in the letter that he had wrote to her. An invitation, in her eyes, would have been sufficient enough. But his words and now his actions waved a sense of uncertainty over her that she was not quite settled with. Still, no harm had come to her this far and she could not imagine that if this had only been some sophisticated plan for an attack, he would have done so already.

At the mention of food, Lehona realized that in her rush to come over she had overlooked such a simple thing as a meal and so the thought was welcomed. He rose and left the room and she curiously followed him.

"How do you know whether or not I have had a man in my life before now, Lord Yaksha? Or do you only assume?" It was no lie that she had been without a man to call her own for all her life, her family having been enough to satisfy her for company. There were male companions who she called friend, but no one had ever touched her heart enough to have her settled into a courtship. It was unusual for this to become a topic of interest though, having only just met Yaksha this evening.

Ignoring his proposal for her to stay the evening, Lehona waited for his answer and hoped to delve even further into the meaning of his letter. She was still uncertain of her safety and the man who was now preparing her a meal had evaded her first question expertly. Regardless of how she felt of the home or it's Master, she did feel safe here and knew that no harm would come to her here.

Yaksha laughed calmly, the sound of knives mingling with his voice to create an almost soporific effect. "I've an eye for that sort of thing, Lehona. I suppose you could say it's written on your face. I can tell those who've never been touched by the light of courtship. It really surprises me, Lehona, that such a beautiful woman has never been with someone." At this point his voice became almost teasing, holding the same hint of a laugh as before. "Unless you simply don't have a taste for men? Perhaps you don't want to be courted."

He returned, carrying a small plate with a peice of bread on it. A powerful scent of garlic and olives rose from the plate, and the bread could be seen covered in tomatoes and cheese, along with thinly sliced peices of pepperoni. "Bruschetta. It's quite lovely, I'd have to say." He set the plate before her, the scents mingling together to create an irresistable combination.

Yaksha himself sat across from her, crossing his legs and folding his hands together. "Don't worry, I'd never give you anything I wouldn't eat myself." At this, he let out a wry chuckle, and leaned forward. "Surely an elf such as yourself knows how to appreciate the finer things in life." He ran a finger across the table slowly, his words almost lewd enough to bring a blush to her face. "I could show you ways to enjoy life more than you've ever imagined you could."

A mixture of warmth and cold filled inside her chest. On one hand, how could anyone know so much about her? On the other, perhaps he had only guessed and been lucky. Still, it was unsettling and yet oddly inviting the way he had welcomed her into his home. And now, he was feeding her and offering her a room to stay in. She found this all very confusing.

On one hand, he seemed genuine and honest. On the other, she knew nothing about him! He could be toying with her for his own reasons. The smell of pepperoni lured her in, taking hold of the weight that pulled in her stomach. Deciding that there was only one way to find out his intentions, she reached out for a piece of the bruschetta as he had called it and took a small bite.

Ooh, this is good. She thought to herself, the delight of the taste so plain across her face. Unaware of her outward display, she took another bite. Oh how she enjoyed the good food. The way it smelled and taste on her tongue. It was her guilty pleasure, one that she told no one of. But here she was, savoring the scent and sensation in front of a man she did not even know.

Her eyes narrowed as they locked in on his. He was enjoying this, she thought. Slowly, she swallowed. Unsure of how she was going to react if he was, she merely sat across from him with the small bit of bruschetta left in her hand. There is only one way to find out. A smirk played across her lips mischievously.

"Why did you really ask me here to see you Yaksha? I'm sure it was not to talk about my taste in men or even if I wish to be courted. I even really doubt if it was to show me the finer things in life and how to to enjoy best to enjoy the time left in my life." Her eyebrows were raised as she popped the last bit pepperoni, tomato and cheese on bread into her mouth. Oh, this was very good, though she would refuse to admit to enjoying it verbally with him just now. No, she wanted to know his intentions before she shared any of herself with him.

Yaksha laughed jovially, skittering his gloved fingers over her arm, stopping at her elbow and then moving back down. His fingers moved quickly, so no peice of her flesh was in contact with his fingers for more than a part of a second. His voice was silken, honeyed, and almost intoxicating. "I make a good bruschetta, don't I dear? It's not that easy to make a good meal with such simple ingrediants." He cupped both of his hands around hers, engulfing it easily in soft leather. "I trained for a long time to be such a good cook, and I pride myself on doing my best."

He chuckled wryly as she asked why he had invited her, his voice sounding quite carefree and joking. "You're so PROPER, Palewind! You seem to think I need a REASON to invite you to my home. Did it never occur to you I simply..." He pulled a hand away, and it withdrew into his hood, as if setting against his chin in thought. "Found you a fascinating woman? Mayhaps I simply invited you here because I thought we could brighten each other's days." He waved a hand towards the window, sighing. "All the people out there are so afraid of following the law, and afraid of the authorities, they never really enjoy themselves. But you...you know what it's like to have fun, don't you?"

He reached up, and pulled down his hood to reveal a leering skull, the eye sockets boring into her own eyes fiercly. "Don't get me wrong, you're still a lovely woman. As you can see, I'm a little less than available for more...fleshy pleasures. But I can still enjoy a woman's beauty, I can still treaure your company." He leaned forward, his voice irresistable and soothing again. "Stay the night, Palewind. Don't leave an old man alone on a night like this." He chuckled softly to himself, then seemed to brighten up. "You noticed the sign outside, didn't you? 'Here there be monsters'? Oh, that WAS a nice touch..."

She enjoyed the way he touched her arm. No one had ever stopped to touch her in such an intimate way. How could she have gone most of her life without knowing this before? The sensation sent tingles up and down her spine, it was so cliche, but it actually felt just like the saying. She was allured by his voice. The way it flowed so warm from his lips. Suddenly she felt an urge to see his face, to see Yaksha's lips move as he spoke in that voice the suddenly warmed her skin.

It was at the point when his hands were cupped over hers that she nearly yielded to him. It was strangely romantic if you turned your head just right to observe the whole situation. Perhaps he had seen her in Kellen one day and had been dying ever since to see her again, in person? That could explain his cryptic words in the letter he had sent. Her mother had always warned her that attraction caused people to do unexpected and unexplainable things.

Hanging on his words, Lehona was dazed and wordless. The flattery was apparent as her cheeks glowed pink. There was an uncontrollable smile that played on her lips and she could only shake her head in response to his accusations and reasoning. Lehona even rolls his eyes and laughed a little as he stated with some certainty that she was one who knew how to have fun. She turned her head at the moment when he withdrew his hood, covering the cheek that was exposed to him with the back of her hand as she attempted to compose herself a minute.

Yaksha stood up and still she hid her face, she had not yet time enough to wrangle her lips under her own control again and her cheeks were still flush and hot. But her curiosity got the better of her and she turned back with a failing attempt at suppressing her smile and instead only turned it into a playful smirk. The sight of him startled her, Lehona gasped and jumped to her feet, nearly overturning the tray that he had brought from the kitchen. How could this be? This is certainly not what she had expected to find underneath the shadows of his hood.

Slowly, Lehona stepped to the side as she skirted her way around the couch, clearly frightened. "Wh-What are you exactly? Are you ill? Should I go and find you a Healer?" Her words were rushed, she sounded startled as she moved her way toward the archway which lead out into the hall. This was so unreal. She didn't even wait for an answer to her previous questions before she spoke again. "I do not know what you might have had planned Master Yaksha, b-but it will have nothing to do with me, I assure you that." Her breath caught in her throat as he referenced the sign that hung above his entrance. "Monsters? Monsters! Monsters are horrible creatures with unforgivable intentions. If you are a m-monster then I will go now. If you do not let me leave, I w-will have to hurt you!"

Yaksha shook his head, and pulled the hood back up. His voice rang out once more, and from the moment his lilting words struck her ears, her fear seemed to dissipate. He held out a gloved hand, and the past few minutes seemed like a dream, or some illusion. After all, someone this kind, this charming...he couldn't possibly be anything but a perfectly beautiful man. "Calm down, Palewind. Please, take a seat, and we can talk about this like civilized people." He seated himself in a chair once more, crossing his legs and drumming his fingers on the table. "I just want to talk with you. I've no plans or anything foolish of the sort."

He leaned forward, and then chuckled softly. "I'm not ill, I'm not hurt. What I am is a lich. I've hidden my soul somewhere else, and this is simply a temporary body. I can never die until the vessel of my soul is sundered." He waved a gloved hand at Lehona, and then let out an odd chuckle. As soon as it finished, he spoke once more. "Please, don't let me ruin the mood like that, Palewind. We can just start over from the beginning." His body began to wrack with silent laughs, and he finally spoke again. "I'm not truly a monster, Lehona. But everyone wants to say I am. I simply let them think what they want. It certainly cuts down on solicitation!"

Yaksha smiled at her, then rose from his chair once more, stroking her cheek gently with his hand. His words, the feel of the soft leather, and the scent in the air combined to become something almost intoxicating, irresistable. "Lehona, please trust me. I'm nothing but a man who wants to live a good life. And there's nothing better in life then the company of a beautiful lady. Stay the night, enjoy yourself. Let me cook you a few more meals." He chuckled softly, and then ran a hand down her back gently. "I want nothing from you but your friendship. Humor me, stay the night. It'd make me so very...happy." Once more, he managed to charge a single word so fully, it could've made any normal woman shudder in expectancy.

Panic flooded her eyes which were trained on him even after he pulled the hood back over his head to shadow his face, hiding it from view. She watched him without waver as he sat, as he stood and as he moved to stand closer to her. She shuddered now when he touched her, but not from pleasure or enjoyment. Worry and fear kept her rooted in place. Her heart hammered so fast and so hard that it threatened to tear from her chest at any moment. Her chin fell to her chest, away from him, her long hair fell over to conceal her own face. Lehona was confused, torn between what she saw and what she felt.

"What does it mean that this is only a temporary body? Do you not have a body of your own?" Ignoring his request, Lehona asked her own questions. There was a thread of disappointment that seemed to unravel. She had turned away from him based solely on the way he looked. Could he or anyone blame her for being frightened? The only way she knew to rid herself of that fear was to ask questions and find the truth beneath it all. He wanted her to trust him but that was too difficult for her without more information.

Yaksha let out a gentle laugh at this point, and nodded at her. He pulled back his hood, and then waved over his skeletal form. "In a sense, this is the body of my own. My entire body is essentially a skeleton held together by my own magic. As long as my soul resides somewhere other than my body, the magic needed to animate this body will always exist." At this point, he flicked a hand around the home. "This body could be pounded to dust, eaten by a dragon, and still I'd find a way back into this world."

Yaksha leaned forward, his eyesockets staring with warmth, which was odd in and of itself in something so incapable of human expression. "The technical term for it is lich. I ripped the soul from my own body so I could live forever." At this point, he leaned back once more, staring at the ceiling in silence, and speaking in a weary tone. "But that's enough of that sort of business. As I've already told you, I'm nothing but a man that wants to live a good life. I was once a monster, Lehona. Once upon a time, I'd have poisoned that bruschetta you ate. But not anymore."

As Yaksha seemed lost in thought, he finally seemed to resign himself to his next course of action. "This might surprise you, but even before I tore my soul asunder..." He gave a jittery laugh at this point, seeming almost to dread his next words. "I was nearly 300 years old. I was a demon, and I'd spent nearly 3 decades in the abyss of this world." He shuddered at the memory, then let out a deep sigh. "I suppose that's what made me what I am today. 30 years is a lot of time to think, Lehona. I thought about who I was, why I even did what I had done. And do you know...I couldn't even remind myself why death and torture was fun."

He tapped a hand on the table, obviously expecting her to run in fear, or even to attack him. "I'm tired of it all, Lehona. Tired of having to kill to survive, tired of seeing people die by my hand. I just want a little peace of mind. Friends, family...children." He let out another shaky laugh, and then waved at himself. "Oh, gods I want some kids to raise. But I think it's obvious that's a little beyond my current capabilities." He seemed near the verge of tears, and he waved to the door. "Leave if you want, Lehona. I just thought you could understand the troubles I'm having. I called you here...well, I guess I called you because I wanted a friend. I hoped you could help me forget my pains for a time. And perhaps, in return..." He seemed utterly calm now, and it was obvious he was trying not to sound desperate. "I could help you forget, too..."
