Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The water here was like the water under the ice further north, but heavier and not so sharp and clear. The air was thick too, heavy with water and not nearly as much salt in it as there was out at sea. She let her sleek seal form glide effortlessly through the murky water, slipping between roots and fallen trees without having to really try. She kept an eye out for large shapes in the water. Then there was a shadow, a rather large one, and it was heading her way. She veered off to the side, slipping between a tangle of vines. She tipped her form to the surface to get a new breath of air, and then wove her way into the root balls of a small grouping of ash trees.

She took a moment and saw the shadow swim about her in her safety, before giving up. Up close, the shadow seemed much smaller. A simple crocodile, the sharks of the river. She would have to be careful with them about. Last thing she needed was a swimming lesson from them. She left her shelter and surfaced, her eyes blinking to clear away the debris and her nose opening for another breath of air. It smelt of rot and decay. Old death…

She ducked back under to surface by a mound that had once been the top of a tree. She pushed herself up onto the so called land in her seal form and looked carefully about the water. The large water predator was not to be seen. The selkie sat up and then shrugged her seal skin off, it pooling around her where she sat. As Alkyone rose to her feet, she picked up the magic seal skin so that it wouldn’t end up with some unknown monster. She reversed it, so her seal fur was on the inside, and wrapped in about her torso in a mockup of clothing.

Vernon watched the sky above through the shifting canopy. He sucked on the fingers of an elven hand as he enjoyed there serene silence of his kingdom. The Black Harvest had apparently inspired more and more fools to disturb his peace, but for now the marsh was still. Vernon had to admit though, it was fun hunting his disturbances and vanquishing them before the other denizens of his marsh managed to do so. The Marsh knew far more dangers than himself and the black dragon who formerly haunted the marsh. Vernon was riding a top one of them, a dire crocodile skimming along the water's edge just barely high enough to keep Vernon's fur out of the water as it navigated through the marsh.

Time passed by uneventfully until an unusual scent came to his nose. It smelled of sea salt, but wasn't exactly fishy. That didn't leave many possible creatures, but it left none that Vernon was familiar with. It certainly warranted an investigation and Vernon was in a mood to make some entertainment out of his uninvited guest. Vernon guided his ride to follow the scent. The watery creature wasn't too far and up wind, so it was sure that she was also warned of him. Vernon sat up and turned to look for his prey. Not too far in the distance he as the hair of of some humanoid being with the rest of the creature hiding a large tree. Apparently it was some sort of merfolk, though they had a different sort of scent. "A little lost in the wrong waters?" Vernon asked as the over-sized crocodile swiftly closed in on his prey.

The entire area was still thick, even in her walking form. She traced her way up, or in all truth, down the tree. One foot placed easily before the other along the trunk. A slight sound reached her ears and she paused. The smell of old death was coming closer. She then saw the shape of a large creature with something that smelled of refuge upon it's back. To her surprise, the creature spoke. A very large rat? How odd. Her grandfather had not mentioned anything like that to her.

She let her gaze shift to what appeared to be dry land not far from the roots of the fallen tree. She crouched down not far from the roots as the crocodile came forward. “Depends on if the river I’m seeking feeds into this swamp or not.” She responded before twisting around, gripping some roots, and launching herself both away from the crocodile and toward the land. One foot sank a little more then two inches in mud, but the other was on firm land. She righted herself on it and looked back across the tree to see if the crocodile or rider would try to go over, through, or around the fallen and slowly rotting tree.

One hand was on the shoulder of her sealskin in case she needed to throw it about her as she returned to the water. Her walking form was of little use for swimming, but she had mastered the art for use among the frozen lands of the North to avoid whales and sharks. The rat, able to speak, may have more intelligence then the crocodile he rode, but she doubted the crocodile shared that intelligence.

The intruder’s dress seemed to hint as well that this strange creature was foreign to these parts. It seemed more like the clothing of a poor or slave girl. It was a bit sad slavery wasn’t organized in nearby areas. It would fun to pick off the slaves that feared slavery more than death, though at the same time it would mean even more occasional trespassers than he felt like dealing with, beside Vernon liked it more when he was the most feared entity when someone entered his beloved marsh. It was doubtful she was a slave though, Merfolk and aquatic creatures made poor slaves. Better term for them would be pets, but that was exceptionally rare.

Vernon considered his options he could play nice and draw in his prey with friendly words, or he could drive her away with fear and give chase. He decided to play in between, after all any dope could see there was something suspicious about rat like humanoid riding an oversized crocodile even if they hadn’t heard all the horrid remarks. Vernon pulled from his pockets two green pellets. “I think you misunderstand. Most things that feed into this marsh… never leave,” Vernon stated as he flicked on of the pellets at the fallen tree. His tone was neither menacing nor comforting, and was merely informative. When the pellet struck it produced a liquid which hissed and quickly eroded the tree away. Vernon flicked the second pellet through the created hole for a similar effect on the other side. The crocodile neither slowed nor deterred its path but plowed straight through the severely weakened tree, which split easily without showing any signs of hampering the creatures advance. The crocodile then snaked around towards the bit of dry land the strange sea creature had reached. "What misguided tale has brought you such a place of danger that few escape from?" Vernon asked as the pair continued to close the distance.

She frowned at the resourcefulness of the rat and at his words. She simply gave a shrug, deciding not to include herself in those things that never left, and decided she was better off in the water. She wasn't small for a seal or anything, taking after the leopard seal in shape and form, but she was faster and more maneuverable then the huge river shark. She removed the fur wrapped about her as she answered his question. "My Grandmother. I'm looking for a friend of the family, a once so called sea monster who has taken residence in a place called The Lake of Darkness. I'm sure she said he was on the other side of the swamp. I don’t mean to be rude, but I am in the middle of a job. I’m sure I’ll see you around."

As she spoke, she threw the seal skin about her shoulders and as she finished Alkyone dove back into the water as she slid back into her seal form. The bubbles trailed away from her as she wove her way swiftly between more tree roots and took off like an arrow. Rotting or not, the water deluded both the toxins and rid her of the smell.

She let herself swim in the direction that the water appeared to be coming from. Until she was sure that the large rat and his little friend were gone, she was going to avoid using her lean and spindly walking form. There was enough water here for her to be fine without it. One thing was for sure, that crocodile was no Orca. If it was, she might have something to worry about. It wasn't long before she found a river block though. Some sort a bundle of tree parts seemed to have been shredded and placed in the middle of the flow of water. Alkyone came to the surface, her eyes above the water and took a breath. Seeing nothing too hazardous, yet, she lifted her head above the water. Surveying her choices, she was disappointed. There was no way she was going over that as she was. Dam(n).

She went over to it and quickly shrugged off her skin to climb over the haphazard looking pile. A cool wind picked up as she looked over at the calm lake and caused her to shiver. She wrapped herself in her skin once more. Why did she feel have to feel the cold so much more in her walking form? She saw a creature not far from the water then and felt herself smile. A horse. The lovely creature rose it’s head when it saw her.

She shifted into some strange creature before his very eyes and even had the audacity to make her escape. Leaving before being excused, how rude. Vernon swiftly stood and took of into the air on bat-like wings that swiftly spread into life as he pushed off of the crocodile. His scaly friend would catch up later. Vernon was annoyed with her head start, not exactly because she had it, but more so because he wasn’t doing a good job of closing the distance. He knew his way around the swamp by heart but between dodging trees and following the plump little creature. It didn’t take him long to figure out where she was headed though. Sure enough she stayed true to her words and traced the waters flow. A good question was what she would do when she reached the blockage.

The time it took for her to change forms and climb over the blockage was enough time for Vernon to perch seemingly unheard and unseen upon a limb overhead. Her attention seemed irrevocably drawn to the horse not to far away. It was little surprise. Kelpies were things of mystery, beauty, and death. Rather delightfully savage and sadistic creatures. They weren’t a common sight but it was always fun to see them chase down their victims and then dragged them to the water depths as they still breathed. It was always nice to see his beloved marsh at work defending itself from intruders. He doubted the kelpie could do much against this one, though. She could probably hold her breath awhile, though perhaps not in her present form. "A beauty is he, not?" Vernon grinned to girl who likely thought she had eluded him.

Alkyone froze when she saw the creature looking at her. It seemed odd... The beast seemed to be hovering between two extremes, in an odd balance. She jumped slightly at the sound of a voice not far away. She turned her gaze to see the large rat once more. Her brow furrowed slightly as she thought about the fact that a rat larger then she was in her walking form had somehow managed to follow her through the trees without her notice. Her hunting skills must be off. At least the river shark... Crocodile. At least the Crocodile wasn't here too.

“You're a rather determined one, aren't you?” She asked, making more of a statement then asking a question, but she would leave it up to him if he wanted to answer it or not. Besides, she wasn't here to look for larger then normal rats. She was here to confirm demon attacks. After that, well... it depended on if there was demons or not. She turned her gaze back to the horse, deciding to answer his question then. “Yes.”

The kelpie pawed the ground with a hoof before taking a few hesitant steps toward them. It saw Vernon and didn't seem too thrilled that he was there, but if it got a chance to at what it was best all, it didn't matter. It was hard enough finding targets without frequenting the the borders of the marsh. If the rat didn't kill her first, she already seemed to be apt to watching the kelpie. Slowly, every so steady though, the horse made it's way over to Alkyone.

"I'm master of this marsh. There is no where to run or hide within it. I'm quite displeased you would be discourteous to the one in the best position to help you, after all none know the marshes waters better than I," Vernon professed as he shook his head. The question of whether or not to seal her death hung in the air.

"As for the stallion, he is like a rose with thorns as sharp as his petals are beautiful. Countless have died for admiring his glory, even now he seems to contemplate adding you amongst her count," Vernon explained almost in awe as his gaze turned to the Kelpie. He could tell that the creature desired the selkie as his next victim and while he had just warned the creature he would not likely interfere further. The rude little girl certainly deserved such a fate as the Kelpie seemed to desire to give. Her death might have been swift if Vernon had avoided warning the lass, but Vernon could bar her escape. He simply wished to give her the chance to struggle for his amusement and to see fear plastered clearly upon her face before her demise was upon her. She certainly didn't seem well armed though she could be a mage of some sort, but it was likely her attempts to defend herself would fail just as those of the victims before her. It was fair enough for the Kelpie as well. Though such creatures were sparse in his marsh, he did scare off or kill many of their would be victims.

Alkyone liked horses. She loved their history, the fact that they were originally from the sea. She had seen hippocampus herds wild in the sea and knew a few sea elves that had tamed the beasts enough to harness their speed and strength. Though the wererat's words drew her thoughts away from the stunning creature who appeared to go back to grazing after deciding they were not a threat.

The selkie looked at Vernon in surprise. "I told you what I'm doing. Why would I be running or hiding when I'm looking for a lake that clearly isn't in a swamp. A lake that is logically upstream. I have a message to deliver and I would like to get it delivered simply because my Grandmother asked me to. She said I could bother our cousins, the nymphs, for aid if I absolutely needed to, though I would rather not. She said it is faerie business and not to speak of it to others. You sir, are a were. Were's are clearly not fey, so I can't tell you anything. If you would like to take it up with Grandmother, feel free. She's on the small island of Roan in the Moonsea. Excuse me."

She nodded farewell to the wererat and turned to be on her way when she nearly walked right into the kelpie. The creature noticed that the wererat seemed more interested in talking, as did his intended pray. So he had slowly made his way over in the guise of grazing. Not that he would ever actually eat grass. He didn't have to eat much, he just liked to kill the reached land creatures, those humans, that had enslaved his people and made it so he could never return to the sea. He remembered that and used it to trick his pray into thinking he was tame.

Alkyone looked at the big black horse in surprise at first, then reached out her hand to see if he would allow her to tough him. He lifted his nose to her hand and she smiled. This must be someone's lost horse, he seemed so tame. The stallion turned so his side faced her, inviting her for a ride. She gave a small laugh and pet his flank before walking around him. She felt her fingers catch on something in the horses mane. Before she could discover what it was, the horse decided that was good enough and plunged towards the water, determined to drown this human.

"Hay!" Alkyone shouted in surprise as whatever had caught her hand held fast, dragging her along with the stallion. The next thing she knew, they were plunging into the water and swimming down at a surprising speed. She didn't know what kind of creature this was, but it has horse enough and seemed to be at least simi-aquatic. Instead of becoming frightened like most land people would, she simply used her free hand to return herself to her seal form. Then, she was free, as seals don't have fingers. She swam along side it, then crossed in front of the creature. That was when the kelpie stopped his downward plunge. A seal? Alkione grinned, swam around the strange black horse, and took off with a flick of her tail upstream once more.
