Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

By the time Cordelia reached the stone steps of the library, a decent amount of time had passed, though she wasn’t quite sure how much. She’d been walking a bit slower than she was capable of, just to give Kaiden more time to sleep. She still didn’t want to come here, especially when the little boy really needed to rest and needed to get cleaned up, but he had requested it and she couldn’t deny him. He was the absolute sweetest, most adorable thing and she just couldn’t say no. Taking him here was the least she could do when he had given her so much already. He deserved it.

Moving her left arm away from his leg, Cordelia took the handle of the library within her hand and pulled, opening and stepping inside. She was a bit surprised to see that the library would be open at such late hours, but then again, she figured it should be normal. Resources like libraries needed to be open twenty four hours a day. The woman stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind her so as to not wake Kaiden up before walking over to one of the tables. She couldn’t exactly carry him around forever, so she supposed now was as good a time as any.

Using the free hand she had opened the door with, she reached up and lightly shook his shoulder, hoping that would stir him. She had wanted to tell him that they were in the library, but she decided she shouldn’t. If she didn’t, then he would be in for a pleasant surprise when he awoke. While she waited for him to open his little eyes, her own eyes scanned the huge building. To be honest, she was taken aback by just how many books were in this place. Rows upon rows of books littered the floor, with a huge amount of scrolls on the back wall. She’d never seen so many books in her life! Cordelia really couldn’t see why someone so little would want to come here. Weren’t kids supposed to be interested in running around outside and getting dirty instead of reading? She didn’t really think this place was going to have children’s stories, so she thought that was out of the question. For a moment she regretted taking him here, but she had to keep in mind that Kaiden wasn’t exactly the average child, and she didn’t really have the right to criticize his decision.

“Hey, sweetie, wake up,” she urged quietly, a smile spreading across her face. “I’ve got a surprise for youuuuu!” Her voice changed to a slight sing-song tone and she laughed quietly, since she really couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when he awoke. She had a feeling he was going to love it when he saw that he was in the place he had wanted to go to, especially after she had first told him she wasn’t sure if that was a good idea. Cordelia looked around the library before looking back to little Kaiden again, hoping he’d wake up soon.

The soft cooing of Cordelia’s voice stirred him ever so slightly in his slumber, causing him to twitch a little bit here and there. If he could groan then that would probably have followed such an action, but instead his head rolled to settle his chin on his arm. Eyes flittered open in a rush of life to glance around their surroundings, before growing wider at the sheer sight. They were in the library as he requested; a place he never dreamed to venture without the security of someone in his company. Now that he was, a sense of wonderment took upon his features while his eyes continue their scrutinizing scan. It was simply massive! Much much bigger than what he had heard of, surely a place like this would have the information they—He would need.

It was like he was stuck in a dream, eyes glistened in the light while they continued their search, mentally noting each of the aisles and what they were labeled. Finally they parted ways from the library itself and drifted to the woman holding him. How odd…To share feelings for a woman he barely knew, but he couldn’t help it. She helped him, took care of him, and even brought him to such a wondrous place. As if to repay the debt, both of his arms would coil up tighter around her neck in a mock hug, head rubbing up against hers, before releasing both his arms and legs to drop down upon the ground behind her. The soft patter of his feet seemed to echo out throughout the spacious library once they made contact with the rustic looking tiles. This place was simply amazing…

Sleep was no longer a concern after the time that passed, since the majority of his attention remained focused upon the library that surrounded them. Parting ways from the woman Cordelia, both of his arms would span outwards like a bird as he began down one of the nearby aisles, running the tips of his fingers across every spine of every book upon the shelf. With frantic eyes, they searched diligently for the book he was seeking before coming to a dead and complete halt. Dropping the arm furthest from the book, the other would remain, only to have his digits crawl up its length to the top. Hooking his index finger into the spine of the book, he would proceed to pull it out slowly to take it up within his hands. Going further down the aisle, he would proceed to pull out two other books, before finally returning to Cordelia and the table. Setting the books down upon the table, Kaiden would then take the top and set it off to the side, doing the same with the middle book as well so that all three books were visible to the eyes.

The first of them was labeled, “Alchemy: The study of Elements.” The next held an odd cover to it that wasn’t all too easily deciphered by simple appearance; its label was, “The Dark Arts.” The last book held two pictures; the first was the top half and held the appearance of two hands imitating the sign for sign. The bottom picture would imitate the sign for Language. Together, the two words came as “Sign Language,” which was printed boldly at the top of the book.

Moving from the table, the soft orbs of his eyes danced vividly across his surroundings, unsure as to where his book had gotten off to so he could communicate with the woman. It bothered him and a look of worry quickly swept across his face, that was until his gaze fell upon it not far off from where Cord was standing only moments prior. Quickly Kaiden moved over to the fallen book to pluck it up from its resting place, before moving over to the table to place it down atop the center book. A perplexed look would soon follow the action, while his eyes skittered around the table noticing there were chairs in all spots but the one in front of the books. Deciding to change that, Kaiden proceeded to go around the table, snagging and dragging two chairs over the tiles and to the spot in front of the books. Diligently taking the time to adjust each chair, a sudden sense of satisfaction swept across his face, before glancing up to Cordelia. Not wanting to bother waiting for the woman to take her own seat, so he would help her. Moving around the chair towards Cord, both of his hands would move to hers, where he would take them up and proceed to pull her over to it, before motioning down to it.

Knowing that she got the hint, he would sit upon the chair next to hers, only to then divert his attention to the books upon the table. Lifting both of his hands to his book, he would proceed to flip it open and scribble some things down, “Thank you for bringing me here, you didn’t have to. These books, I wanted to find out about that mark on my hand and maybe teach you some words if you want. How long can you stay…?” Placing the pen down with the folds of the pages, all attention would drift up to the woman along side of him, curious as to what she’d say or do. Would she begin looking at the books, or would she simply wait for him to do it? And how long would she stay with him, where would she go, could he go? All these thoughts jumbled through his head without answers, but he would simply sit and wait for her to take up action.

Cordelia just had to grin at Kaiden in his sleep. He was such a sweet child; she really couldn’t get over it. She would never understand why she had been lucky enough to come across such a little angel. She bit her lip, trying to contain her excitement for when he would finally open his eyes. He was going to be so happy! Seeing her prediction come true as his eyes opened and widened, Cordelia couldn’t help but smile even wider. Just seeing him so happy made her feel exactly the same way. It was rare for her to want someone to be happy, but Kaiden was such an entirely different story that he couldn’t even be compared to anyone else.

When his arms tightened around her and he rubbed his head against hers, Cordelia couldn’t help but simply just laugh out of joy. It wasn’t the normal obnoxious, almost nasal, cruel laugh, either – it was simply just a laugh of being overjoyed. She’d really done something right this time, hadn’t she? Her smile never disappeared and she lifted a single arm to pat his, since it was the only sort of return she could give what with him on her back. As he dropped down, the woman blinked for a moment; she would have gladly helped him down, but she supposed he was just really energetic and excited. She would have been, too, if she was in his position. Once he was on the ground, the woman put her hands in the pockets of her pants, watching the boy with her head tilted a little bit. She was afraid he was going to knock something over with his arms open like that, and she almost called out to him, but she refrained. She had to try and not be over protective; Kaiden may have been young, but she wholeheartedly believed that he knew what he was doing.

Soon enough Kaiden was returning to the table, various books in his little arms. They looked extremely thick, too; those definitely weren’t storybooks. Yikes! While she knew Kaiden wasn’t the average little boy, she didn’t expect him to be such an avid reader. He was just a kid, after all, and most of the children she had ever known weren’t very good at reading and certainly weren’t at such a level of skill. Kaiden spread the books out over the table for the titles to be seen, though when Cordelia read them she just had to raise an eyebrow. Alchemy? The Dark Arts? Those two unnerved her slightly, though she completely understood his reasoning behind having the Sign Language book. Maybe she could actually learn a little bit of it tonight… that would be extremely pleasing.

She simply watched as he went to regain his book, nothing but patience on her face. That smile still remained, though by now it was much smaller and was just a simple crease and none of her teeth were showing. She would have helped him with the chairs, but it seemed that he had that situation under control. Her head tilted a bit more than it already was when he came over to her and took her hands, though her huge smile immediately returned as soon as she processed completely what he was doing. Goodness, Kaiden was such a sweet little boy! He had manners, he was smart, and overall Cordelia thought it was almost safe to say she loved the little kid. “Thank you,” she said, for once using her own knowledge of manners, and sat down in the chair she had been offered.

He began writing in his book as he always did, and just like every other time Cordelia waited patiently for him to finish. She simply looked at the books on the table, crossing her ankles under the table. She felt a pit in her stomach when she read the title of The Dark Arts book again, mostly now because she remembered what Calvin said about the tattoo. While she didn’t know how alchemy related to this, she had a feeling that this night would be spent trying to figure out what the tattoo really meant. If anything, she had a feeling that made her more anxious than just the simple titles. What if the tattoo meant something really bad…? Oh, dear. She really didn’t like idea, so for now she simply pushed it out of her head and looked at what Kaiden had written down for her to read.

“Thank you for bringing me here, you didn’t have to. These books, I wanted to find out about that mark on my hand and maybe teach you some words if you want. How long can you stay…?”

Cordelia bit her lip after reading this, looking out one of the windows at the dark sky. The fact that he did, in fact, want to find out about her tattoo didn’t faze her, since she had expected that – it was the matter of time that worried her now. She lifted her right hand and ruffled her hair with it, trying to make up her mind. She could probably stay for a few hours until they would really have to run to Balefire. There was a part of her that wanted to say she would just stay until he wanted her to leave, but she couldn’t put herself in that kind of danger; not when she was the only thing he had. “A few hours,” she told him. “I have to be in Balefire before the sun comes up. It’s a sort of… curfew, if you will.” He didn’t need to know what she was, if he hadn’t figured it out already. Not yet, at least. “But I’ll stay with you right up until then and maybe we can check the books out and you can bring them along, if you want to come with me.” Cordelia offered a smile, hoping that would be good enough for him. “But we still have a few hours – so what do you want to do first? Teach me a bit of sign language or find out some stuff on that tattoo?”

“A few hours….”

What that usual meant was that she would leave him when that time would come, abandoning him again to the world around him. The cruelties and everything that threatened to swallow him up in his hollow existence in this world. Whether she would return would be something he didn’t hold for a certainty, considering every time someone told him that sort of thing, it usually ended in disappointment and another lonely night. Trying the best he could, Kaiden would attempt to keep the look of disappointment from his face, but it would be to no avail. The expression would lighten briefly only to then return to his face. He didn’t want her to leave, he didn’t want to give her chance to, but who was he to decide what this woman did?

The best he could do now was to simply accept, accept the fact that no one wanted him, that she wouldn’t return…That’s when something snapped inside of his head, sparking a sudden welling of anger within him. By damned! Who was he to sit around and let someone just abandon him again when he had a choice in the matter? Deciding to do something about it, the boy would reach for the pen in his book to start scribbling again, “You’re going to leave me too? I won’t let you, I’m going with.” With that he abruptly slammed the pencil down upon the page, the other would move down to hers to take it up within his tiny grip as if to keep her from leaving him.

Standing up from his chair, Kaiden would then proceed to close his book and stack them one atop the other using his free hand. The action added a lot of strain to his arm, but it was worth it if he could keep her alongside of him. While it would seem a silly thing to do to most, it wasn’t so silly to him considering what all happened to him in the past. In fact it was needed in his eyes. Once all the books were stacked, each of his hands would part their ways to the books, grasping them at opposing sides and bringing them off the table to his waist where they would be held for the time being. Motioning off towards the check out with his head, there would be a soft smile that would trace his lips, before waddling over there seemingly happy in the current state between the two of them. Upon approaching the desk, both of his hands would heave up to spill the books across its surface, leaving the man standing behind it with a quirked brow.

“Uhhh….I don’t think you should be checking out these books there Kiddo… Not without an Ad—ult…” The voice seemed to skip out from the man’s mouth at the sight of Cordelia, before nodding briefly, “Okay kid, only because she’s with you. They have to be back in a three days. Anytime before midnight.” With the last flittering word that left his lips, an eye would wink in the direction of Cordelia, before he finished stamping the books and passing them back to the child.

Kaiden’s hands would reach up to take them up within his hands and bring them settling just above his waste once again. Turning around quickly on the heels of his boots, they would then swing up to offer them out for her to take, mainly because it would be easier for her to carry them than him. Once she would take him, he would proceed to motion two fingers from him and then to her, as if to say, “We.” Then he would take a single finger from each hand, point down, and then swing them up and towards no general direction as if to say, “Go.” From there, both of his hands would flatten out, digits extended to begin drawing an outline of a house in the air, which would be pretty explanatory as it stood. While he waited for her, he would decide to throw in one more thing to add to the statement to make sure she was aware he was awaiting an answer from her. Both of his hands would bring themselves palm upwards in a half shrug, which was kind of more a gesture than anything else, like it was up to her to decide.

Cordelia had to admit, she was a little bit surprised when he opened the book and started writing, mostly because he didn’t seem too happy. She blinked when he slammed the pencil down on the page and took her hand like that. That seemed a little bit possessive, didn’t it? Nevertheless, Cordelia looked at the page and read what he had written, her stomach sinking a little bit. It was true that she was going to have to leave the library eventually, but that didn’t mean she was leaving him. She wouldn’t dream of leaving him and causing him anymore pain than what he had already suffered. She had told him that she couldn’t bear the thought of letting him down; had he already forgotten that? “Sweetie, you’re more than welcome to come with me,” she said quietly, her voice completely sincere. “I didn’t mean to make it sound like I would be abandoning you…”

Kaiden proceeded to stack all the books up, which she didn’t think was a very good decision. They were heavy books and carrying them with just one arm while he held on to her was probably only going to hurt him, since he was so little. She wanted to offer to carry them for him, but he still seemed agitated, so it probably wasn’t a good idea. Even if she loved to annoy people, especially when they were angry, she cared about Kaiden and respected him a lot more than she did for other people, so she’d allow him to do as he pleased to a certain degree. His small smile relieved her a little bit… at least he didn’t seem as irritated. She walked with him over to the counter, not having much difficulty with keeping up with him.

“Uhhh….I don’t think you should be checking out these books there Kiddo… Not without an Ad—ult…”

Her eyes narrowed and she cleared her throat before she wound up rolling her eyes. What a stupid guy. What kind of person noticed a kid before they noticed an adult? She was a tall person, particularly next to Kaiden – it wasn’t that hard to miss her. Besides, who was he to tell the kid he couldn’t check out whatever books he wanted to check out? He was just the guy at the counter, not the guy in control of this library and he certainly didn’t have the right to deny her little boy the right to take whatever books he wanted to. He needed those books, and she was glad that the man finally corrected himself and said Kaiden could take the books. She smirked slightly, glad that her presence had so easily changed his mind. However, the faint trace of lightheartedness completely disappeared the moment he winked at her. The moment he had completed the action the smirk completely faded and her free hand clenched into a fist, contemplating whether or not she should yell at him. It was so very tempting and the words were at the tip of her tongue, threatening to spill out or make her explode should she not say anything. He had absolutely no right to wink at her… ugh, who did he think he was, saying Kaiden couldn’t take out books and then winking at her?! If only Kaiden wasn’t standing right beside her, she would have corrected that guy without a second thought of her tone or her words which totally had the potential to be a bit vulgar. But she would bite her tongue, if only to polite in front of the little boy.

As soon as the books were passed back to him, Cordelia simply shot an ice cold, stabbing glare at the man before she took the books from the boy next to her, wrapping a single arm around the three of them and resting them against her hip. He started signing, and while she was a bit lost at first, she soon put it together. “Yep, let’s go sweetie,” she said with a sweet smile, taking one step in the direction of the door. She turned slightly to look at the man behind the counter before glaring again, knowing by now he had probably gotten the message, but even so she just had to say something now that they were leaving. “Have a… nice day… and do be careful about who you wink to because some people just don’t like it.” There wasn’t even a smidgen of kindness in her voice and as soon as she finished speaking she looked away from him, deciding he didn’t deserve anymore of her time.

Turning her attention away from him and back to Kaiden, she would simply smile like she had a few seconds ago before walking with him to the library doors and leaving.
