Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

I know it's been a while, but you'd think they'd remember. How they screamed for me, how they burned for me. The firelight glow, chorus of screams, thrilling in every way. How I have missed you Kellen, how long I have wished to return.

Zorgn stepped out of the alley had been crouching in and began to tour the town he had remembered for years. The foggy night was perfect for him. Slightly cool, low visibility, and not a star to be seen through the thick clouds that hung oppressively overhead. Shadows cast by the torches that hung in front of some homes provided enough light to see by, with enough shadows to slip into if unforseen events took place.

But unforseen events were what Imythess was all about, Zorgn had concluded in his two year long trip to the far west. Exotic lands he had seen, a name he had made for himself, but if Kellen was any indication, Zorgn would be quickly forgotten in the west.

But he would not be forgotten in Kellen, oh no. Stinking peasants had no reason to let a being who had burned the town multiple times, killed many people, be forgotten. The very torches outside their houses was a testament to the lax precautions of the townsfolk. In his time, no fire would be seen outside, for fear of an all consuming blaze set by Zorgn. This very night, on the eve of Zorgn's quiet return to Imythess, bereft of all worldly possessions, Zorgn considered burning down the town again. And why shouldn't I? A... celebration, perhaps? My return to Imythess needs a bit of a bang. Zorgn knew he could set the place ablaze, and damn the hovering rainclouds, but what about Ace? When he had left, Zorgn could have been easily overpowered by Ace, and given two years to train... Zorgn shuddered at the thought.

But it didn't stop him grabbing a torch.

The night she arrived in Kellen was one that brought with it a heavy promise of rain. A thick fog covered the ground and a smile touched her lips. They would not have to worry about being seen in this weather. At Ornell’s direction, a large steel dragon landed inside the cities walls, in a darkened ally. No need to vex the late night guards after all. She had dismounted from her ride and straightened her bardic armor, done in a dragon scale pattern. Silver to a golden red on each scale… Ornell glanced back at the dragon as he finished settling into his human shape. He pulled a shirt on and was pulling out a vest from his satchel when he asked, “Do you want me to come with you?”

“Perhaps. It’s rather late, so it will be hard to find people willing to come with us to the Dragonspine.” She replied. “I’ll start in the morning then. Besides, we planned for that sort of delay.” Ornell’s gaze went to the streets then as Valen straightened out his human clothing and shouldered his satchel. When he started to come over to her she held up a hand to stop. He did, and waited for her to say something. She didn’t say a thing, but motion for him to stay down. He took a few steps back and knelt down in the fog, nearly vanishing in it.

Ornell had spotted someone here who didn’t look to have the best intentions, and she wasn’t about to let anything happen in this town before she had a change to drag a few adventurers out of here. She needed them or the entire trip would be a waist. She didn’t like to waist her time like that. It was bad enough she was running too late to find any sober people in any tavern, if they were even awake! She cast a spell about herself and vanished. She felt herself vanish into thin air, actual air. She let herself float above the fog in order to get a closer look at this man. What was he up to?

The night of pain and screams that Zorgn had been wishing for might be ending. Something large hit the ground a few blocks over, making Zorgn hesitate for a moment. He was not armed enough to take on anything inhuman, but what the hell? He was Zorgn. Countless fights, horrible odds, pain, death, nothing could stop him. All were minor inconviences. Small obstacles in his path to greatness. Avoided or overcome, it mattered little.

Onwards once more... Zorgn considered how he would approach the place he had heard the sound from. Would he go with torch held high? Or would he take his chances with a stealthy approach, chancing his being to his ability to hide in the shadows. Zorgn once again wished he had his Shadowdancer powers and wondered briefly how he had lost them. It mattered little though, they were gone and his choice was made. He would chance the shadows, the dark alleys and roofs he had climbed before. Rampant shadow and muffled noise from the inns of the town would serve to mask his approach.

Quickly as could be done, Zorgn replaced his torch in it's holder, and silently made his way to an alley, avoiding the light as if it were the death of him. With the stakes of this game, it might be anyway.

Ornell relaxed a bit when he returned to torch to it’s holder. She doubted it was his anyways… but then he moved off rather quickly, passing right through where she was. It was an odd feeling. Sort of like… being swam through she supposed? Ornell felt disoriented for a moment. She paused and focused, and then she turned her attention back to him. What in the world was up with this man? He seemed to be trying to hide. Well, he didn’t know she was there at all, so it wasn’t really as strange as it could be. She tried not to laugh. Not only would that draw attention to her, but may make him paranoid. Paranoid people were always irrational…

After a moment she realized that he was heading to the spot where Valen was. It wasn’t likely that anyone had seen them land, but… Valen was a full grown dragon and landing in streets isn’t quiet, no mater how hard you try. Not without magic at least. She held in a frustrated sigh and drifted past him to warn the Steel dragon that he was going to have a visitor. The ally was dark and she could just see the shape of him as he sat on the ground with his back to the wall. He seemed to be resting his head against the wall and his eyes were closed. She drifted over to him carefully and whispered a warning to him. “Valen, we are about to have a visitor.” His eyes flickered, then closed again. His breathing was normal, but it was hard to tell he wasn’t actually asleep. She drifted up and out of the way with a smile. ‘Smart dragon.’ She thought and waited to see what this stranger had in mind.

Calm, Zorgn, calm. You are a creature of the night. This is nothing. But it was something. This night was different. Perhaps it was the fog, or maybe because the town was so different from the last time he had been there. These were wrong. Zorgn knew it, deep down where he would not let himself see, that he was not alone in the night. Something was loose, and that something, had him scared.

It was the little things. Things that you do not know you need untill you've already lost them. Things like weapons, spells, equipment... Their loss served to leave him alone and and afraid, with only lies to shroud him from from his enemies.

Lies could not convince him that he had heard nothing earlier. No house had fallen over, nothing appeared broken, things seemed fine as he slid from shadow to shadow. Here, a heavy doorway hides him from the eyes of a passing drunk, singing a song of lost love. There, a stack of crates nearly fall as he passes. A silent sigh. It was going to be a miracle if he got much closer without being detected. Zorgn took a second to hide and think. Was there any way to get closer without being seen? He was sure he was in the right area, but he couldn't see anything to have made a sound such as he'd heard. There was the obligatory drunk, sleeping it off, but nothing out of the ordinary. Is it safe? Can I go back to burning now? Why am I hiding in an alley when I should be killing?

Ornell was wondering what was really going on here. Had she interrupted this man somehow? She went over behind him then, where the entrance to the ally was, and let herself rematerialize. The air then felt cold against her skin and she gave a slight shiver. It was different being made of air and then not. It wasn't at all like fire. She didn't mind it really, but she felt cold now... It had to be the weather. So much moisture in the air. It was rather uncomfortable all in all. Goosebumps traveled up her spine as the cold tried to creep up on her again. Deciding that she didn't like that any, she raised her body temperature enough that the fog trying to cling to the ground near her evaporated. She then let it return to normal and the cold feeling was gone. Feeling better she focused her attention on the man. He had stopped and was standing next to a rather haphazard stack of crates. She smiled when she realized that they probably weren't that way before Valen had landed. If it didn’t fall before this little meeting was over she would have to be sure to make it a little more stable.

She wasn’t going to bother with the blades at her sides, at least not at the moment. He didn’t seem to be looking for a fight. Just that… he seemed to be trying to get away with something. So perhaps, perhaps he was looking for something after all. Ornell crossed her arms and asked in what she considered a warm and hopefully friendly tone, "Can I help you find something sir?"

She saw out of the corner of her eye that Valen moved slightly, he opened one eye a slit to see what was happening. He didn’t rise yet. He wouldn’t stand up until the man turned around to face Ornall. If there was trouble, he knew Ornell could take care of herself. It was a different playing ground though when one thought they were one on one then when there were two against one. People often didn’t like those odds. But for now, the dragon stayed where he was, waiting until he felt he would be needed.

I was alone. How could someone sneak up on me? Maybe... Zorgn shook his head. Something was seriously wrong tonight. Mysterious noises and people popping into existence, it was too much. Everything happening just made him want to get out of town and say goodbye to the strangeness of Kellen. But he was Zorgn, and until an enemy appeared, he would not flee.

His moment's reflection ended, he turned around to face the person who had snuck up on him so gracefully. No wonder. An Elf... The best lies are those containing a grain of truth, and Zorgn was sure he didn't want to start telling his life's story to people sneaking around in the night. "Mistress Elf, I commend your ability and stealth for sneaking up on me, and while I thank you for your concern, I don't think I am in need of assistance. You see, there was a sound a while ago, or so I believe. I can't find the source, so I assume I was mistaken."

Of course, his intentions to set the town ablaze were not mentioned. Why should he bother her with that little bit of information? Why do I even leave her alive? She's a fit candidate for feeding. She wouldn't make a half bad Vampire either. Why don't I, no, I want to know her part in this tale. What she is doing here is more important than hunger. What does she know?

(ooc - since you materialized behind me, I didn't see you and assume you snuck up on me)

Ornell grinned at his reply. She hadn’t really expected him to tell her anything really useful, besides the slight fact of why he had come back here. He was still hiding something and she wanted to make sure it wasn’t something she would have to worry about. She shook her head and looked back at him. “You appear to be mistaken in a few things. I’m not an elf, I didn’t sneak up on you, and I’m not at all concerned about you. Would you like to try again?”

She didn’t move at all, but her eyes glowed slightly red as the smile on her lips seemed to settle there for a bit, as if she found him slightly amusing. The body she had right now may have once been an elven one, but she herself was not. She was a Traveler, a hybrid elemental, and the Avatar of the Goddess of Flame. Not that she was really too inclined to tell him all that. Rematerialization did not equal sneaking up on anyone in her mind, and was not something she felt needed or warranted commending. She wasn’t one to promote sneaking, as those who did so were usually doing something they know they shouldn’t. That was not true for all things though. Spies were often useful and they snuck about. The good ones you never saw though. And she really wasn’t concerned about him, more so about why he was sneaking about and acting the way he was.

(ooc - You're doing a good job making this a complete pain for me)

Well, @#$%. This isn't going well at all. Either she doesn't know what I'm capable of, or she doesn't care. This could be a very bad thing.

Zorgn decided to drop the act. It wasn't working well at all, and only seemed to make the woman more... Suspicious? Annoyed? He really didn't know what she was feeling, but whatever it was, his speech wasn't helping make it go away. She seemed like a town guard who had caught a criminal and was about to beat him untill he renounced his evil ways. Zorgn was not about to renounce his ways, and he was not about to let this... thing stop him. Delay him, maybe, but not stop him.

"Okay lady, sure I'll try again. Why is such a pretty thing as you out so late, and so heavily armed? Why do you care what I'm doing?" Zorgn was almost willing to kill her and be done with it. A quick nick of his blade and she was done for. Or maybe he'd feed. Grab her arms, hold her tight, and drink her dry. A slight struggle, maybe, but he could overcome her. Maybe he could pull the good vampire routine, convince her to accept his bite... But no, she was that I'm gonna beat you into a bloody pulp, grind you into a fine powder and serve you at dinner. kind of girl. She was welcome to try.

((OOC: um... You're welcome? ))

His tone seemed to change and with that Ornell let her arms drop easily to her sides. No games, good. She preferred his more demanding tone then his false polite go away tone he had used a moment before. She wasn’t going to go anywhere at the moment at least, so she decided to go ahead and answer his question. “I actually just got to Kellen a short time ago and I plan on finding a few adventurers, or at least people willing to find some unique items, and the guts to travel to the Dragonspine Mountains. I doubt you would be willing to go on such a venture though. Not with the way you hide in the shadows and lurk around. You probably wouldn’t even make it across the desert, would you?” She replied rather unkindly in turn and then she shrugged. “If you plan on doing something while I’m here though, you will regret it. If I were you, I would wait until after the sun sets tomorrow.”

Ornell said, revealing her suspicions as well. As she had spoke, Valen had carefully gotten to his feet and was now leaning casually against the wall on the other side of Zorgn. He hadn’t moved far and didn’t speak as of yet. For now, he just waited. Ornell didn’t even favor him with a glance, knowing that would give him away.

(ooc - last ooc was a good thing. complete and utter pains for Zorgn make getting longer posts a lot easier for me. kinda sorta maybe...)

Zorgn turned his head when he heard a noise from deeper in the alley. The drunk had finally woken, probably by their conversation. But he did not act like a drunk, no; he rose just fine and leaned back against a wall. This was not at all what he had expected. The man didn't appear to be armed, but who knew what he had hidden on him or near him.

Turning his head back to the elf, he studied his second problem. She was going to cause him pain, probably more than the man in the alley. Zorgn let his fangs fully extend in his mouth. There was going to be absolute hell tonight, and he couldn't quite say he would regret fighting here tonight. Zorgn let the power of the Abyss flow through him; the imp he was infused with began cackling in his head. "A Quest? With you? No, I'll pass. Nothing is worth the aggravation."

Zorgn took a breath, and dropped his hand to his dagger. The whole menacing act wouldn't do a damn thing, but Zorgn was furious, a vampire in fool bloodlust. He knew she must be able to see his fangs now every time he opened his mouth, and that was good. Maybe she'd thing twice about messing with him. Zorgn fairly snarled his next words, "For tonight, I'm here, I'll do my thing, and then be gone. Stay out of my way." he turned, and made his way for the street.

Ornell grinned to herself. She had managed to reveal his true nature and she was proud of herself. She had been right. The man was a vampire too, an interesting addition to this little game. That was what this had become after all. This wasn’t really anything like a conversation. It sort of reminded her of an argument in a court, when you knew one of them was going to regret something they had said. Then the next day, one of them would no longer be in the court… Too bad he didn't seem to want to play any more...

"I wasn't inviting you." She said in a flat tone and then moved her arm out from her side to block his path out of the ally. Her head turned sharply so her eyes stayed on him, but she didn't move from where she stood. "You have no idea what you're messing with, do you? I wonder if you're going to try and find out the hard way or if I should just tell you." She rose her chin to speak to the man leaning up against the wall. "What do you think Valen? Should I tell him who we are?"

Valen pushed himself off the wall and crossed his arms across his chest. "Probably not, My Lady. It will make things more complicated then they need to be. It's bad enough he heard us arrive. I'll have to work on that a bit."

Zorgn was almost twitching. This girl kept trying her best to anger him, and was succeeding like few others had. She'd acted like he was a fool for not knowing what she was; had snuck up on him and then had the audacity to say she had not; insulted him countless way, tiny jabs that just asked for death. And she knew what he was, she must, and still she attempted to bar him from leaving. With the man who now was shown to be more than he appeared, she might be more of a threat than she had appeared.

Zorgn mentally lapsed back into his polite salesman routine as he looked around the alley. Fog creeping closer, boxes stacked precariously, and the two people who wanted him dead, it seemed. there was little way out of the alley except up. Could he jump up, grab a box, and make his way to the roofs? Maybe crush them with the boxes? Or would he fall? "Mistress, forgive my ignorance, but what, exactly are you? Why should I fear you, when I have seen centuries of hellish things? If you would stop me from killing you, tell me why I should fear you."

(way ooc - do you prefer the good approach you take with Ornell/Lady Era, or do you prefer to play it evil? which is more fun?)

((OOC: Ornell isn't good... She can be nice if people follow the rules in her head, but when someone tries to yank her around she can be rather mean. Lawful doesn't mean good. She tends to give what she's given, unless she knows she's right. If someone messes up, she might be the one to catch them on fire. Personally, I don't prefer either. I like playing tragic characters like AD who is more powerful then she thinks she is. Era/Ornell is way out of my comfort zone though, but she's fun.))

Her eyes glowed slightly, a deep red, as he lapsed back into an earlier tone. He was back in the game now then. Good. If he played his cards right he may manage to walk away from this. What cards she had to play now was the question. She could make things hard for him, but he had preverbal step down. So to be fair, she should lay down her cards and find out what he had to say. At the moment the deck was stacked against him, just the way she wanted it.

She flashed him a wicked grin. "You? Kill me? I doubt you know how to kill an immortal. For this night and the next day I am the most powerful being in this little place. I don't want trouble while I'm here. When I'm gone, you can do as you wish. If you don't have the coin to make it through that time, or perhaps the blood, it can be arranged. Either that or I could have you trussed up and imprisoned for that time. It's up to you." There was no look of humor on her face my the time she had finished talking. She set her jaw then, keeping her eyes level on him. Those eyes were still glowing red though.

Zorgn was deeply unsettled now. Glowy eyes on races that should not have them usually bespeaks magical powers. Is she a shapeshifter? Is she pulling a spell to change the appearance of her eyes just to confuse me? Maybe she's a Vampire too? No I would've sensed it, would've known. The only good thing to have come from the last few minutes was that she seemed less likely to sic her bodyguard on him. She had even grinned! Miss Ice Queen might be somewhat normal after all, in a twisted kinda way...

She was not the smartest person he'd ever met, however. He had an idea what she meant, but was interested in making her specify exactly what she meant, by angering her as much as possible, without getting killed of course. "Why, mistress you do me a disservice. Killing immortals is not so hard as all that. You just need to know where to stab. For elves, chop off a limb, stab them, they're fragile. I know how to deal with them. But, you're not an elf, are you?" Zorgn grinned, a mirror of the one the girl had worn earlier. "What are you? I understand immortal, but that is not so great a feat. I am immortal too, if you can call this unlife by that name."
