Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Heavy footfalls carried him forward as he approached the dark alluring structure before him. Slowing to a slight halt his eyes drifted across the building before something collided with him, throwing him off balance. As he regained his balance, he shot a glance up to the dark form retreating into the tavern. A frown slid across his slender lips as he too made his way into the tavern in pursuit of the man. As he entered the building, a cloud of smoke rolled into his face, clogging his nostrils with the suffocating scent of burning garbage, at least it was how it smelt to him. Stifling a few coughs, he glanced about the room trying to figure out where the man went, but only found arguing men and a group of men that were crowded around two single men, who seemed to be trying to out drink each other. Manic sighed as he was unable to pick him out from the rest of the crowd and took a seat at the bar. Planting both of his hands upon the bar he motioned the barkeep over to him, “I’ll take an ale…” The barkeep nodded and placed the mug on the counter, before pouring the ale into it. The barkeep then set the mug in front of Manic and collected the gold pieces before disappearing off to the other side of the bar. His right hand moved for the mug, brought it to his lips and took a drink before placing it back upon the counter. Idly the digits of his left hand drummed themselves rhythmically upon the bar-top as if trying to keep himself entertained, but to no avail. A simple sigh passed his lips as he turned his attention to the man to his left who was passed out face down upon the bar. Manic cocked a brow at the man, before his eyes drifted off to the woman who was staring straight at him. Immediately his eyes dropped to the bar-top as he slowly turned away from the woman’s stare, finding it rather uncomforting. Slowly his metallic hues lifted from the bar-top and up to the doorway as if awaiting someone to walk through and take his mind away from all the noise around him, but for now he would wait.

Aedra had no love for cities, yet she seemed to find herself in them more often than not lately, and this particular evening she found that the city was busy. She had already been to most of her usual haunts, seeking a place to do a bit of entertaining, perhaps spend a warm night at an inn, rather than the random places she slept. As she looked ahead, she knew she was approaching the darker side of the city, the part she usually avoided, however, tonight she was feeling rather curious and decided to continue forward.

She pulled the hood of her cloak up, covering the braids of her hair, though it did little to shadow her face, it at least made her feel a bit more comfortable. She had heard of a tavern in these parts, one of the evenings when she had stayed around after her performances were over at another inn. A couple of the tavern goers had mentioned a place, not as light and friendly, where the shadier types would go, but they had said she’d not find the same coin there she found here. Any coin is better than the nothing I’m making roaming right now, she mused as she continued on, eyes looking over the signs, trying not to look so nervous.

As the scents of smoke and alcohol filled the air, she knew she’d found the tavern, though she wasn’t sure how well she’d be able to sing, or even play her flute with the way the smoke already began to irritate her nose. Either way, she made her way into the tavern, looking around some for a good place to sit and watch for a bit, to decide whether or not she’d have a go at some entertainment. Perhaps life wasn’t so bad when he was in control; at least he never had me at a place like this. Just the thought of her past made her touch the thin choker, and the loneliness set in some. She sighed softly, glancing around a bit, wondering just what brought the patrons of this tavern to a place like this, though some of them obviously fit in quite well.

Another lonesome sigh passed his lips as he took another drink of his ale. It was like the nights before on these lands, cold, and empty. He was never truly able to find conversation to perhaps gain new info about the lands or even find himself a guide, a traveling companion, perhaps. The lands were his last resort, he couldn’t go anywhere else and the last places he had been he hadn’t fit in one bit. It almost seemed useless to keep traveling, but he wouldn’t just give up and call it quits, which is why he was here. However; the more time he spent here, the more he realized he was out of place yet again, and not to mention once again alone. Suddenly the loud creak of the door brought his attention to it as he awaited the form to appear in the doorway. As she took a few more steps into the tavern, one of the dim lights of the tavern seemed to highlight parts of her face, but not enough to make out if she was like the rest of these creatures.

Taking a couple of moments to think, he wondered if he should really try and call over the newcomer and hopefully have someone to talk to, but he wasn’t too sure. It wasn’t often that he offered first to speak, because his father always told him, “Speak only when spoken to,” but he would have to break that rule for now. Otherwise he would bore himself to death, unless of course he wanted to join one of the drinking games, but he hadn’t the stomach for such a thing, at least tonight. As for the rest of the people, they seemed off and about, except the strange passed out man beside him and the constantly staring woman on the other side of the man by him. For once he kicked what his dad told him to the curb and motioned over the woman to the seat to his other side. He had hoped that this would not be a bad idea, but then again he could be wrong, it all would tell in time.

She felt the eyes upon her as the door announced her entrance, and while most of them seemed to go back to whatever they had been watching prior to her entrance, there was one person who was still watching her. She looked over to where the makeshift area was for performers, seeing only a bunch of men who had spent far too much time nursing their cares away with drinks of alcohol and decided it might not be the safest thing to perform for this crowd. She gave another glance around the place again, and as she turned towards the bar she caught sight of the one who had not gone back to some game or staring into his drink as if he was seeking answers from it.

When he motioned her over, she felt her heart suddenly begin to quicken as she wondered just what he wanted. It wasn’t often she was noticed much when not performing. Either way, she made her way over to where he was seated, lowering her hood as she approached to keep from seeming to be ill-mannered.

“Good evening, Sir. You wished something?” Her voice was a soft and somewhat melodic, though the nervousness had taken the edge off the usual sing-song tone. She offered him the polite dip of her head before taking a seat at his side, her eyes holding a bit of a naïve and quizzical look.

A faint smile crossed his lips as she asked her question and took the seat beside him. She appeared fairly normal to him, at least far different than the ordinary filth around here, but that was just his perception. His right hand moved to the pouch at his side and pulled a few coins from its confines and placed them upon the counter in front of her, “Take them and get yourself something to drink, because all I wish is for some company and you’re the first person I’ve talked to in the past couple of days. My, I must be lucky.” Manic offered a slight laugh before continuing on, “But allow me to introduce myself, the name is Manic Deathstorm…I come from a land quite a ways from here. I’ve been traveling for quite some time and this is the only place I have left to come to, since the other lands, well…I didn’t quite fit in, we’ll leave it at that. Anyway, that’s enough about me, how about you? Are you an outsider like me?”

Manic offered a curious glance before returning his gaze back to his mug of ale, “Sorry if I seem to be a bit nosy, it’s just been a long while since I’ve had the savoring embrace of nice conversation, so-to-say. That and I’m slightly curious to see if I’m the only one in this sinking boat.” Again he offered a laugh before taking another sip of his ale. Placing the mug back down upon the counter, he slid it around in a circular motion, watching as the tainted liquid sloshed this way and that, exposing the bottom of the mug for only a fleeting moment, “Y’know not everyone can find happiness at the bottom of a mug…That’s what separates me from the rest of these people. Don’t you agree?” His right hand lifted from the mug and brushed a few strands of his jet-black hair from his face, “So, what brings you here anyway? You don’t seem the type to hang out with these types of people.”

She took the coins and began flipping them between her fingers, more curious about this man than interested in getting herself a drink. "Manic Deathstorm, it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Aedra Ilyan, a wanderer. I left home years ago and have seen much, and other than staying with a Keeper once, I never stay long anywhere." A bit more of the carefree sing-song tone had returned to her voice as she felt more comfortable at his side than she had prior to settling down. He seemed like he'd come to this place for the same reason she had, it was a place to go in search of something that was needed.

"You're not being any more nosy than I am being curious, Sir," she laughed softly, as curiosity was one of the things she could never deny, no matter how often it got her into a sticky situation. "That would make you very much different, in a good way, as sorrow floats, can't just drink it away." She glanced around the tavern once again, still wondering how she'd even managed to convince herself to come to this part of town. "I came here because all the stages of the usual part of the city were taken, so many performers. No, this is definitely not my type of place, though it seems to be a good thing that I did come here." She offered him a smile, "The ship isn't sinking, there's just a few clouds in the sky overhead."

A few moments passed as he strewed over a couple of thoughts. Idly his digits lined the lip of the mug before tracing down the sides, “Aedra Ilyan, a pleasant name for a beautiful fair maiden such as you.” Again a smile crossed his countenance as he shot a glance up to her trying to catch her expression. Once more his gaze soon found it fixated upon the mug in front of him, “It seems that you had better reasons for traveling than I. You had left your lands while I….Well, I had no choice but to leave. And well since I got to these lands, I don’t think I could find my own rear end.” Manic laughed slightly as he rubbed the back of his head nervously, “In fact, I was lucky to find this place, but it seems I wasn’t so lucky; with the exception of you of course.”

Taking another drink, his eyes lifted up to the bartender who seemed a bit impatient. It took a few moments to register that the bartender had been waiting for him. Slowly he lowered his mug and wavered a hand, “I’m fine, I don’t need anything more, in fact I shouldn’t even be drinking, bad habit. However, this young lass over here may want something.” As the bartender tended to her request he turned his attention back to the woman, “Anyway, you’re telling me that you go around and perform? Like what kind of performing do you do? Maybe I could watch you sometime?” A soft warm smile plastered itself upon his visage as he turned to face her, “It would be nice, seeing as I’m also pretty dry of entertainment as well. My, you must think I live a dreary life.” He laughed again as his gaze drifted off to the various patrons around them as their volume grew, “Good lord they’re loud, wouldn’t you agree?”

She felt her cheeks warm with a light blush as he complimented her, catching his eyes for a brief moment before he returned them to his mug. She grinned slightly as she heard his skill for being lost was about as good as her own, speaking when he was finished, "Oh, but being lost is half of the fun, Sir. It is often when you are completely lost that you find the most interesting adventures. I must say, I wouldn't trade this night and our random meeting for any night in one of the other inns."

As the bartender returned, Aedra softly requested a simple glass of water, a habit from her evenings of performing and one she stuck with seriously since her one night of tispy singing. She kept her attention on Manic, listening as he spoke, nodding a silent thanks to the bartender as the glass of water was set down. "Yes Sir, I perform when there is room for me to do so. Flute mostly," she paused, as she saw the smile, "and I'd be more than happy to perform whenever you wished, just say so." She chuckled softly, "Nay, I don't think you have a boring life at all, it isn't as if you sit around in one place all the time and wait for something interesting to come along."

The crowd had become louder, though Aedra's attention had remained upon Manic. At his mentioning, she glanced around the room some, realizing just how much the chatter had picked up, not to mention the barks and shouts of an argument. "That they are, yes," she spoke, keeping her voice to where only he could hear it, then sipping at her water a bit.

Taking a couple minutes to contemplate all the times he ever found himself lost, he soon found himself laughing with amusement over them. There was a time when he found himself lost in the woods and was being followed by some stray dog that would not leave him alone. It turned out the dog had been following him for the item in his pocket, which happened to be his snack for the journey to these lands, but he ended up giving it to the dog instead. Shaking his head slowly he turned his attention back to the woman, “I can’t say I agree with you. All the times I’ve been lost were horrible at the time, but actually rather funny now that I look back at them. Eh, maybe I’m not cut out for the adventurous type, what do you think.” Again a smile played itself way across his countenance, “I agree, I wouldn’t change the night for anything however lucky I was to find a nice woman like yourself. Normally I don’t call people over, but I had a feeling. You know when you get those feelings you just have to go for it. I’m certainly glad I did.”

Finishing off the last of his ale he slid the empty mug to the other edge of the bar-top, placed both of his hands flat upon the counter, and pushed himself to an erect stance. His eyes drifted off to the woman, taking in her radiance for a couple of moments before speaking softly, “Why don’t we continue this outside, it’ll be more peaceful I’m sure, no one will bother us there. Besides the smoke is starting to get to me. I never liked smoke anyway, bad memories. Anyway, shall we?” His right hand lifted slowly before him, turning his palm up and offering it to her, “Perhaps you could even play me a song. Music always soothes the heart and the gods know I need it.” He laughed slightly and nodded his head to her with a smile upon his lips.

She smiled at hearing him laugh, especially in a place such as the one they had found themselves in, where people were far more likely to be so depressing and gloomy. "Or perhaps I'm simply so used to being lost and roaming that I just laugh at myself and enjoy it all the same," she responded, giving him a bit of a wink. "I certainly am glad you called me over to sit with you though, honestly." It was quite a change from her usual evenings of sitting up on a stage like a songbird on her perch singing and playing her flute for the entertainment of people she would never know. People came and went like the breeze, and very few ever truly noticed the Bard on the small stage in the corner playing her music.

She watched as he finished off his ale, and then stood, finding herself suddenly feeling as if their evening together was about to come to a close, and then he spoke again. "I'd love to get out of this place, the fresh air would be wonderful." She set her glass down on the bar, not even thinking twice before she was standing beside him, taking his offered hand and returning his smile. "Of course I could play for you, Sir, it would be an honor." Leaving the loud, smoke filled tavern was simply a bonus to his offer, as she'd gladly have played wherever he had requested. His laughter was such a wonderful sound, as it meant he was at least enjoying the evening, which made her all the more happy.

His digits coiled lightly around her soft warm hand as she placed it within his. Slowly he pushed forward, making his way towards the tavern door and opening it wide with his free hand, as his frame slid off to the side to allow her room to exit first, “Ladies first.” As she exited the tavern, he followed closely behind, releasing her hand as he had. The first steps out of the tavern were wondrous; the cool night air was soothing to the soul as was the clean air apposed to the smoke filled air he had been breathing since he had arrived here.

Taking a seat upon the steps he motioned for her to the same, “Take a seat, I won’t bite. At least I don’t think, you’ll have to take your chances.” He laughed again as his head tilted back, casting his gaze up at the starry sky and the bright white orb of the moon, “What a wonderful night to be out here. It’s not too hot, not too cold. And the fresh air is awesome. I got to learn to not take things for granted, all this beauty in one place. A fair maiden, a starry night, a wonderful time, and a nice song.” He offered a smile, before stifling an oncoming yawn, “Guess I’m getting kind of tired but, I don’t want the night to end so soon, maybe your song could keep me awake, care to play for me?”

She smiled as he wrapped his hand about hers, making her way out into the cool evening air before him, after looking up to him in thanks for his polite gesture. She suddenly felt her nose and head clear some as the smoke-filled air was left behind and she no longer felt the need to blink so often, as her eyes quit burning.

She giggled softly as he took his seat and offered for her to do the same, "I'll take my chances, Sir." She followed his eyes up to the sky, and such a lovely sky it was, with all the tiny little stars looking down, watching all of the little people down here scurrying about. She absently wondered what they thought about the things they saw, and whether the world was just a stage for them, each night a new show for their enjoyment.

She smiled as he spoke again, reaching for the small, simple, wooden flute at her hip as he mentioned a song. She set the flute on her lap and began flexing and stretching her fingers a bit as she spoke, "I'd be honored to play for you, Sir, perhaps something light and fun, to keep both of us awake." She looked to him as she finished speaking, giving him a little wink, then lifting the flute to her lips and working through a couple of notes to be sure everything was right.

After a moment's pause, she began her song, a light flutter of notes, her fingers moving easily over the flute, changing from high to low without pause. The song had been created while Aedra had been watching a couple of butterflies flitting about in the air one afternoon, the notes danced about the same way they had. She dipped her head forward as the notes grew lower, soft longer notes, it was when the butterflies had settled down only to rush up into the air in a flurry of notes. She felt restless as she sat playing, remembering how she danced that day, how the butterflies seemed to dance about her, another afternoon of carefree fun. Finally the song came near it's end as she let the become softer, turning to watch Manic as he sat there next to her. As she lowered her flute, she spoke once more, "Just a song of butterflies," she laughed softly, "perhaps an odd subject to think of in city such as this."

Manic nodded to her choice in the music, mainly because his sense for music wasn’t the greatest. As she began playing her joyous song, his head tilted back, allowing his gaze to roam the skies. The song was soothing and rather calming, two things he never had at once, at least not since he was a kid. He recollected over his childhood for a moment, which remarkably were some of the best times of his life. He thought back to the times he would sit and watch his father training; he had been sooo proud to have such a cool father. He was like his idol as a kid, he wanted nothing more than to grow up like his father, but it soon changed over the years when misfortune took him from Manic. Manic sighed slightly as she finished her song, “Well, I don’t think it’s so odd, it’s actually rather relaxing.” With a grunt he pushed himself to an erect stance, stretching out his sleep-ridden joints before relaxing again, “Well, maybe we should turn in for the night. Would you be willing to meet up again tomorrow? Maybe in a more fitting place, like the falls perhaps? I heard about it from some old guy, it sounds beautiful; I’d like to go there. Maybe we could meet when the sun meets the horizon? If you don’t that’s fine with me, oh and thanks for the song, I loved it.”

Aedra finished placing the small flute back in its pouch at her hip as she listened to him speak. It made her happy to hear that he didn't think the song odd, or find it hard to listen to, and as he stood, she looked up to him, seeing the stars above shining down behind him. She took the chance to watch him from this angle a bit, then pushing herself up to her feet, stretching some as she did so.

As she stretched, she felt a yawn coming on, though she did her best to keep it from showing. His suggestion of turning in for the night was quite welcome. She was, however, surprised to hear him invite her to spend time with him again, and the location he mentioned sounded quite a bit better than this place. She felt her cheeks warm with a blush as he spoke of the song, causing her to speak softly, "I'm glad you enjoyed the song, Sir, and of course I'd see you again. By the waterfalls sounds like a wonderful place. When the sun first touches the horizon I shall be there looking for you."
