Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Leo didn't remember this part of the forest when he first passed through. The trees were as black as night, with leaves to match and covered in webs. There was barely enough light to see the path. Maneuvering around the webs was difficult with the pommel of his sword sticking over his head and the shear size of his scaly armor.

Finding a small clearing he grabbed some nearby wood from the web-covered treeline and struck a campfire. He couldn't afford to let his guard down judging by the size of these webs and the thickness of the strands. There were bound to be spiders large enough to take down someone his size or bigger.

"I have to leave this place as soon as possible, I can't even tell if it's truly night." Speaking aloud he hoped wouldn't attract too much attention from the local fauna.

Shugri made her way through the dark woods of the Spiderhaunt, climbing from tree to tree. She took care to avoid the webs of its denizens, as while they generally left her alone, she never knew if one of them would be hungrier than normal. She searched for food, something to tide her over. It was hard, as the spiders that lived here were far more experienced hunters than her. She had a lean, wiry build, her matted hair pulled back with twisted plant fibers. A spear made of wood, bone, and tendons hung from her back, and her clothing was the most primitive of leather garbs, enough to cover her modesty while not inhibiting movement. A spider the size of a large tarantula sat on her shoulder. Her dusky gray-green skin was dimmed from dirt stains, among other marks of living wild. She was about to give up, and turn in for the night, when she saw it: a large squirrel, the size of a small cat. Such a catch would be a fine meal, and she drew her spear quietly, waiting for it to draw closer. Once it had scurried beneath the branch she was perched on, she stepped off, her spear pointed down, driving through fur and flesh. She pulled the still-twitching rodent from her bone-tipped spear, and looked around for a good place to go to cook her meal.

She then noticed a glow coming from a short ways away. With prize in one hand, and spear in the other, she crouched low, slowly approaching the fire. Once she reached the edge of the campfire's light, she took another couple of slow steps, before making her presence known.

"Vot! Pik kautar ghash?"
<Person! Can I cook this squirrel at your fire?>

She held the dead, still bleeding squirrel forward, in what she hoped was a peaceful gesture, lifting her spear in her other hand, as one would hold a walking staff.

The sight of the large orc startled Leo, making him scramble to his feet and draw the massive sword from his back. Upon hearing her speak and hold out a freshly killed animal, he assumed she was not hostile. Her gaze at the fire he made tipped it off as to her intention. She wanted to use the fire, and while he would oblige he decided to keep his distance as a precaution.

"What is your name, orc?" Keeping his sword pointed in her direction he circled away to give her a path to his campfire. "If you mean to use my facilities I suggest you make it quick, that little menace on you makes me want to swing already."

He eyed the spider she carried with her. If there is one there are a score more nearby. The orc appeared feral in her own right so Leo could not predict or anticipate any of her actions.

Shugri cocked her head to the side, a bit unsure as to why someone would carry that heavy of a weapon, as well as why he would draw it against her. She shrugged as he circled back and around the fire, seeing the distrust in his eyes. She squatted down onto her haunches, and sat her spear on the ground a few feet away from her. She meant him no harm, after all. She picked up a nearby stick, and ran it through the squirrel's mouth, and held it over the fire. Shal-um, the tarantula on her shoulder, skittered down onto her thigh, his front legs waving in such a way to suggest happiness or excitement. It made a series of clicking noises and "ticks", which the large orc child responded to in kind.

"<This feast shall fill our bellies for another glorious night! Oh, happy day!>"
"<Yeah, there's enough to share with that man. Don't know what's wrong with him, though.>"
"<Maybe he doesn't realize you are willing to share your victuals. Invite him to join us for this humble dining!>"
"<That's a great idea, Shal-um(Leggy)!>"

She pointed to the man, and then to the squirrel, then back to him.

"Ha?"
<Eat?>

She smiled, her teeth and two lower tusks gleaming slightly in the flickering red light. She leaned over and patted the ground next to her, inviting him to join her and Leggy.

He planted the blade of his sword directly down at his feet. Leo watched as the orc disarmed herself to cook her food. She apparently did need the fire and she did not speak the same language he did. He was taken aback when the spider ran to her leg and she began conversing with it through clicking noises.

"What in the planes are you even doing?" He blurts out before the orc motions him to the squirrel. "I-...huh? Sure I'll eat the rodent you probably had your hairy monstrosity poison."

Slowly he picked his sword back up and placed it on his back, approaching the girl. "I swear if this makes me sick I'm cleaving you in two and roasting your pet in this fire."

Shugri watched as the man approached, sitting to her right of the fire, just over arms length away. His tone of voice told her that he was still uneasy, possibly having something to do with the squirrel, and seeming very strongly to be related to her companion. Shal-um took this moment to chime in. in his clicking language that spiders shared.

"<I say, this stranger does seem to be uneasy towards consumption of the meal. Does he think we would offer him something diseased?>"

"<Or poisoned?>" Shugri added, her eyes widening as she came to a conclusion.

She quickly placed the stick holding the squirrel over the fire between her knees, and pointed to Shal-um, and then the squirrel, shaking her head as if to say no, while placing her hands next to her mouth, with fingers curled to mimic fangs. She then reached over, and picked up her spear, and pointed from the jagged bone tip to the squirrel, before repeating her previous motions of "no fangs".

She hoped the stranger would understand, and she set the spear back down. She lifted the squirrel from the flame, prodding its singed skin with a finger, and judged it to be ready for consumption. She pulled it off the stick, and grabbed each end, twisting back and forth until it broke in half. She tossed the end with the head towards Leofrick, and tore off a small piece of meat, and tossed it to the edge of the campfire's light. Shal-um jumped from her lap with surprising speed, ducking low the ground, sitting unusually still, save for the slightest swaying of his abdomen, as if he were waiting for something to take the bait that lay just out of sight.

Leo watch with a puzzled look as the orc threw a piece of the rodent out by the edge. He looked back to see the spider in a pouncing stance like a cat, waiting for it's prey. "Did you really just use this tainted meat as bait? It would kill whatever finds it before that little bastard could scurry over."

He shook his head as he turned back, holding the portion he was given. "No thanks, I think the dead carcass from the cobble road hours ago killed my appetite for the rest of my life. It was even more appetizing than this looks. What do these things even eat here? Other rodents?" he thought, "Wait, they probably eat spiders and are inherently poisoned, hooray."

He understood the orc's gesturing when initially handed him the meal, that she killed it and not her pet. It didn't help that he felt the flora and fauna here were corrupted and tainted.

Shugri began to eat the squirrel, occasionally pulling out an inedible organ or such carefully. The skin was singed of all hair, and had a crispness to it was simply scrumptious to her. A faint skittering could be barely be heard, just outside of the light, and Shal-um skittered off in a flash, disappearing into the darkness after his prey, which if one could see in the dark, they would see was a carrion beetle following the smell of meat. Shal-um quickly pounced after a course correction, and sank his fangs into the insect, and began to dine himself, out of sight of the two.

After a few bites, Shugri pointed to herself, and slowly spoke,

"Shugri." She tapped her gray-green chest to emphasize that she was identifying herself. "Shugri Uruk." She then pointed to him, her expression inquisitive as she took another bite of the large rodent. "....lat?..."

<I am Shugri.> <I am an Orc.> <Who are you?>

Oh gods I think it's trying to actually talk to me.

So her name was Shugri, and she either was saying she was a orc or her family or clan was called Uruk. He couldn't be exactly sure but it did sound like a simple mispronunciation of the Common word "Orc". He decided to return the courtesy and identify himself.

"Leo" he faintly pointed to himself. "Leo, Human." he said as he tugged on an exposed part of his skin, hoping it registered his intent.

He paused for a second, why did her tone sound like a non-matured person? He knew her features weren't as rugged or defined as traditional orcs....Is this girl a child!? Have I been dealing with an orc kid this whole time?

Shugri listened to him respond in kind. But why was he tugging on his skin? Still, he seemed to be indicating that he was called Leo, and he was something called a "hyoo-mun".

"Hyoo-mun...." She sounded the word slowly. Was that his word for the Shara, the people that seemed to live everywhere on this continent? She was interrupted in her thoughts, to the sound of Shal-um skittering back, clicking happily. He scurried up her leg and side, before resting once more on her shoulder, nuzzling his slightly fuzzy body against her cheek, before settling back. She thought on the words he had used, and tried to piece together a sentence in his tongue, confused as to why he still wasn't eating his share of the hunt.

"H-yoo-mun....ha...eat?...um....ruh-dent?"

He pointed to the meal. "Squirrel." and pointed back to his mouth saying "Eat."

He sat the meal across his lap and began to remove his gauntlets. He gave the squirrel a quick tap with his knuckle to see how much the young orc had cooked it. It was fairly tough by his taste but any further delay might cause this wild child to be insulted, and who knew if she had friends in the shadows.

He took a bite, flinching at the sinewy toughness of the small animal. He eventually finished and wiped off his hands before donning his gauntlets once more. Standing and stretching he looked around. There had to be a source of water nearby, but how would he even ask about something that isn't readily visible to someone who didn't speak his tongue?

Picking up a stick he began drawing wavy lines in the dirt asking "Water?"

Shugri practically beamed at Leo as he finally ate his portion of the squirrel. After finishing it, and re-donning his armor, he stood, seeming to be looking for something. He picked up a stick, and began to draw in the dirt. Shugri picked up her spear, making sure to not hold it in any way that could be conceived as threatening, and stood. She walked around the fire a little closer to him, looking at his squiggles curiously. He said another word in his tongue, and she looked from him to the squiggles a few times. Was... was he thirsty?

"Wah-ter?.......Jut?" She made a motion with her free hand, like tipping a cup towards the mouth, trying to ascertain what he was looking for.

Leo caught on that she knew what he was asking for. "Water." he said while mimicking her hand motion. Maybe communicating with a barbaric child wouldn't be so difficult if he stuck with universal gesturing and symbols.

he walked closer to the treeline and stood quietly, trying to listen for anything that he could identify as a river. Not hearing anything he walked back to the fire and took his sword off his back and slammed it into the ground. Unfortunately boredom for him meant destroying things, yet he would rather not alarm his new companion by cleaving trees over, so his sword stuck out of the ground as he sat back down.

She clapped her free hand on her thigh, and nodded, smiling with her tusky smile.

"Wah-ter." She pointed off in the distance, continuing to nod and smile. She put her spear on her back, and pointed to his sword.

"Hambar."
<Put it away.>

She pointed from the sword to the spear, hoping he would understand that he needed to put his sword away, and keep it there. After repeating this a few times, she waved for him to follow.

"Wah-ter." Once more she pointed away from the fire, and began to walk towards a river she knew of not too far away.

She obviously want him to not have his sword in-hand so he placed it on his back once more. While he was hesitant to follow a strange orc into dark, predator-infested woods, he would at least be able to defend himself long enough to draw the giant sword if needed.

He kicked some dirt over the fire to put it out. He was quite sure Shugri would be cross with him if he was responsible for burning down part of where she hunted and/or lived. That begged the question, did she actually live here or just hunt with her pet? Questions for later he supposed.

He followed her into the woods, unsure of what lurked in the shadows.
