| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

The sun was beginning to set over the Bay of Taras, the blue waters fading into a orange reflection of the distant horizon. A frigate was drawing near to the docks, curiously bereft of armaments. Standing near the stern of the vessel, leaning on the rails, was a slender red-headed woman, and a young blond boy, who were both looking at a curious violin, carved from ash wood. Their discussion was interrupted as the first mate of the vessel called for the anchor to drop, and the walkway was extended to the stone paths of the dock itself. The androgynous sailor released the wheel, and turned to the fiery mother. "Captain, we've docked. Free to disembark." The Captain's aquamarine eyes peered out from her tangled mess of wavy red, as she put away the violin, and patted the first mate on the shoulder. "Thank you, Sam. Come along Cyrus, let's get some food." The ten-year-old boy followed closely as the sailors went about their tasks, and the two of them set foot on dry land for the first time in almost a week. He wore a simple blue tunic and trousers, his skin tanned from time in the sun, his blue eyes always shining with an eager light. His mother was far paler, seemingly untouched by the sun, her skin decorated with numerous tattoos and markings. She was garbed in a dark blue wrap, simple but elegant, but flexible enough to allow work and maneuverability. She looked around for the dockmaster, seeking to pay her fee, so that she could move on to having a pleasant evening with her child. |

The waters were serenely calm as night was creeping over the harbor. The light breeze was just enough to move the ships that were coming and going for the day. Kaalia watched as a familiar ship made it's way to the dock to let it's crew off. To her surprise only her old friend Sil and her adopted son Cyrus disembarked. Striding up to them she gave her them a subtle smile. "Welcome back, I trust no nefarious plans are in your agenda?", she chuckled as she looked over to the approaching dockmaster, waving him away. "I'll take care of the fee for a friend. You might have to make your son scrub barnacles in the morning though." She gestured for the two to walk with her, her shift ending as soon as the sun fully set. "Would you two like to join me at the tavern? I heard some sailors earlier talking about a place called The Salty Fig." |

Silnimare was somewhat surprised to see her old friend at the docks again. After almost a year of absence, she had been running into her much more frequently of late. At least this time, she seemed interested in catching up. To be fair, not being in the presence of pirates tends to make guards more at ease. Cyrus, on the other hand, was much less reserved, waving eagerly. He hadn't really spent time with Kaalia, but his mother had told him many a story of their adventure. His friendliness drew a chuckle from his mother, who replied. "Nothing sinister, save perhaps showing him how a bard earns their coin, and enjoying a meal good enough to be criminal. And you have my thanks for the fee, although I assure you, it's no trouble. As for the tavern, that sounds like a splendid plan. Lead the way." As the odd pair of them followed the guardswoman, Silnimare made an effort to strike up conversation to pass the time as they walked. "So, what have you been up to, while I was gone all this time?" |

Kaalia gave another smile as they made their way through the alleyways. The back streets of Taras weren't as shady as she remembered. The guards must be increasing their patrols. "I was half expecting someone to pop from the shadows to either mug us or try to sell us stolen goods." After few minutes the finally came across a large building. The mix of wood and stone making up the outside of the build looked rather new, attracting heavy foot traffic through their doors. A large wooden sign on the wall by the door read "The Salty Fig". "I don't remember there being a tavern in this area, nor any construction. Wonder what this one is like?" |

The formerly blind captain chuckled, and nodded her head towards her son. "Perhaps they heard Cyrus was coming, and fled in terror." The young pirate-to-be beamed at the declaration, despite it's joking tone. He knew she was kidding now, but one day, it would be true. In his heart, he knew he would one day carry such fame or infamy. Some might have said he was naive, but his own mother knew that he could do great things, as long as he remembered to use his head along with his heart. She looked at him with a mixture of pride and amusement. He had much to learn, but his eagerness was admirable. She wondered when she had lost that fire, herself. She was stirred from her thoughts by their arrival at a tavern. It had been renovated, but something about the place seemed... familiar, although she couldn't place it. She shrugged, saying that it seemed as good as any. Cyrus then piped in, "Maybe you could even play a song here. I'm sure Miss Kaalia would love to hear it, and they look like they could afford you." He smiled proudly at his mother, who looked somewhat awkwardly from him to Kaalia. "I don't mind playing, but well, maybe we hould eat first, and see if that's something everyone agrees on, before that happens, ok?" |

"Some food sounds great. Haven't really had anything all day." She look towards Cyrus, wide-eyed and eager. "You know, I've never actually heard your mother play before. In all the time I've known her she hasn't really picked up and an instrument and played a tune." They walk inside the building, the inside looking much larger than the outside let on. The inside had a bright, warm feel to it, like it was meant for the higher paying customers. She worked her way through the crowd that gathered indoors, making it difficult to move around without bumping into to someone. Kaalia spotted a table by the stage start to vacate. As she approached a couple of drunken sailors arrived at the same time. One of the sailors, standing a head taller than Kaalia, looked down at her with glazed over eyes. "You best not be looking to have this table. Be a good little girl and find somewhere else." She rolled her eyes and sighed at the pair. "Then I'd hate to let that boy over there that he can't sit and watch his mother play tonight." She points to Sil and Cyrus. "You wanna be the one to let them know that you want to be difficult?" She leaned in close to the taller sailor. "The red-head can punch a mast in half without putting any effort behind it, so guess what she'd do to your spine? A broken sailor would be out of work before morning." The pair's eyes went wide with fear. "Forget we were here. We don't want no trouble, miss." They quickly walked away from the table, bumping into people and tripping over tables. |

Silnimare watched in amusement as Kaalia went to secure them a table. Had she really never played in front of Kaalia? She thought hard about it, and realized she couldn't recall a single instance. She was stirred from her thoughts by the sight of a few sailors that Kaalia had been talking to hurriedly exiting, tripping over people and tables. She made her way to the table that her old friend had saved. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you were the intimidating one of us, Kaalia. I don't remember the last time I saw someone run like that. Well done, to avoid a fight. I'll be right back, I'm going to go see if they'll let me play." She waved for Cyrus to sit as she made her way over to the bar, asking the barkeep if she knew where the owner was. She was answered with a chuckle. "Well, you're looking at 'er, lass. What I can I do for ya?" Silnimare swiftly apologized. The woman had a dark reddish-brown mix, and a matronly figure. "Don' worry 'bout it. Now again, what can I do for ya?" "I was wondering if you would mind me playing here, tonight? I don't ask for much. Even tips would be fine, money's no object." She pulled her violin out to illustrate the point. The owner seemed to think for a moment, before gasping and smiling wide. "Say, I thought ya looked familiar! You're Sil-something, aren't ya? That little redhead that used to play the boardwalk all th' time, right?" Silnimare blushed a little. "Yeah, that's me. Don't know I've ever played here before. But it seems oddly familiar." The matron nodded understandingly. "Aye, that's understandable, we jus' finished renovatin'. You played here a long time ago, terrible shame, what that man did to ya." Silnimare's eyes narrowed. ".... What." "Yeah, we used to be called the Wavin' Weasel, before, don't ya remember?" Flashes of that night filled her mind. No wonder this place had been bugging her. This was the place where her eye had been slashed by a petty thief when she was just a girl. "Sorry, it's been a while. It's.... good to be back, I suppose." Her discomfort was evident in every word. The owner looked at her reassuringly, and added, "Hey, no worries, lass. Twas a shame what that man did, but it seems to have all worked out, right? That bastard did his time, and I dare say learned 'is lesson. He wouldn't hurt a fly, just sits there minding his own ever since he got outta the cells." Silnimare's expression went from bad to worse, as she turned to follow the owner's glance, and saw him. Granted, he was scarred, and looked like he had tried to head-butt a grizzly bear's paw, but alive. And here. "... I'll be right back." "Hey, I'll not be 'aving any more violence in my establishment!" The furious captain ignored her, her eyes looking like solid spheres of ice or crystal instead of their usual green form. The temperature in the room began to noticeably drop, and the murderous look in her eyes caused many to back out of her way, as she walked towards the once-thief sitting in the back corner. Once she drew close to his table, she asked, her voice seething with unbridled rage, "Remember me, you bastard?" A pause that seemed to last for an eternity followed, and the man pulled back his hood, revealing his face in a little more detail. His eyes were blank, bloody spheres, marked in much the same way as he had once marked her. He was a wispy fellow, the years not having been kind. He looked as if he hadn't slept in years, and his dark hair was thinning, even balding in patches. He turned his face towards her. "I've been a bastard to many. But it my memory serves, that voice sounds familiar. You're that little bard, aren't you?" Silnimare smiled grimly, and cruelly. "Yeah, that's me. And trust me, by the time I'm done with you, your face will be the least of your wounds..." She was making no effort to hide her intent, and people were beginning to back away, as both from the cold and her expression, there was something not natural about this red-headed woman. A table of sopping drunks in the distance could be heard cheering the taste of their chilled beers, despite the graveness of the brewing situation. Meanwhile, back at the table, Cyrus turned to Kaalia, asking in confusion, "What's going on? What's taking mama so long to come back? And why is it so cold all the sudden?" |

Kaalia heard the commotion and turned to see the owner of the tavern yelling after Sil, who was bee-lining for a hooded man alone at a table. Body language alone gave away her intent, prompting Kaalia to turn to Cyrus and sit him down. "I need you to wait here and do not try to involve yourself in what your mother is doing. Am I clear?" He gave a puzzled nod as Kaalia briskly walked over to Sil, catching the end of her threat. "Sil...what do you think you are doing? It's not like you to let your emotions get the best of you." She looked down at the scarred man, his eyes marked too similar to Sil's. Crap, this can't be the guy from the story she told me from when she was younger. Sil was visibly seething and the temperature continued to plummet. You could see the breath from every patron. She took a second to gather her thoughts and remember the spell that would adjust the room. She held her hands in front of her, trying to counter the cold. The room began to heat up, but couldn't overpower the chill Sil let off. The best she could do was make the room bearable. "Sil! Either calm down or I calm you down!" |

Silnimare was shaking in anger, a stark contrast to her usual calm, laid-back demeanor. She felt magic in the air, and the temperature try to stabilize a little. Had someone said something? A nagging at the back of her mind tried to pull her from her near-murderous focus on her childhood attacker. Something about emotions, perhaps? Then it finally reached the edges of her consciousness: Kaalia had come over, telling her to calm down. She did not turn to face her old friend, her eyes drifted down to her shaking fists, cold concentrated so that the air around them grew misty for a few inches. She focused her magic on herself and Kaalia, a strange pulse filling the room, though nothing seemed to immediately change. Then all at once, everything stopped moving. Hair moving in the wind defied gravity, a coin flipped in the air stood still, and all was frozen, as unmoving as the grave. Sil herself could not move, but her spell allowed her and Kaalia to do one thing while time seemed to stand still: talk. She still refused to face her friend, her eyes fixed on her tormentor. She spoke, her voice unnaturally calm as she strained for control, though her voice fluctuated ever so slightly from her emotional state. "Do you know who this is, Kaalia? Do you have any idea what this stain upon existence has done, what he has cost others? What he cost me?" Despite her trying to level her voice, only her spell kept her frame from shaking visibly, in this altered state of time. Edited by Silnimare, Tue Feb 6, 2018 2:25 am.

Kaalia looked around puzzled as everything around her stopped. She had never seen time magic before. She looked back to Sil who was visibly struggling to control her emotions. Kaalia dropped her spell, hoping it did not cause the air to drop again. "I have an inkling of who this is, his scars resemble your. His eyes show signs of self-inflicted blindness. It doesn't take an expert to see a broken man, just look at him." She motions to the still figure at the table. Even frozen by the magic he looked ready for his life to end. The frozen visage stared blankly at the table even after hearing Sil's threat. "He looks like guilt has wracked his mind for years. Even now he will probably welcome death by your hands, but what will it avail you? Tell me." She looked at Sil's back, her glowing orange eyes attempting to discern Sil's next move. "Will killing a man wishing for death even change anything? Hells, just before you stopped everyone he even had a hint of relief to hear your voice, anger and all." Silnimare looked back to the man, her icy spheres that once were eyes studying his expression. Now, in this infinitely-stretched moment, she could see it. He was broken. He had neither fled, nor resisted. The more she thought about it, the more what Kaalia said made sense. But her deep-seated resentment and grief still tugged on her hard, as she wrestled with this maelstrom of emotion. "What would his death give me? Hell if I know. Justice, maybe? Revenge? I'm not sure I even care. I'm still not sure what would be crueler, to punish him, or end his miserable existence and clean this blight from the earth. He deserves all that, and worse. He robbed me, Kaalia. First, of my coin. That's forgivable. Then, the drunken bastard took a bottle, and cut my face until I quit moving, and lay there screaming. If it wasn't for him, my dad wouldn't have had to come help me. If it wasn't for him, he would have been home, with my mother. If it wasn't for him, she might still be alive.Whether or not he feels bad, it doesn't bring her back. It doesn't change anything. Would killing or hurting him change anything? No. Would it make me feel better? I haven't the faintest idea. But gods forgive me, I've been picturing his face screaming under my fist for years..." |

Kaalia let out a sigh, feeling this was a fruitless effort to stop her. "Then consider this. Was he in his right mind when he robbed and maimed you, resulting in the loss off a loved one? I'm not attempting to defend a man that caused that much pain, but is it possible he didn't know he was even doing it? And upon sobering and realizing what atrocity he committed, isolated himself and mentally punished himself every day these past years? It happens here more than one would think." If Sil was fully intent of exacting her own punishment, ultimately she knew she couldn't stop her. She definitely could stop her by force, but if Sil did act then all Kaalia could realistically do is crowd control to avoid collateral damage. "Do what you will but remember this, I am still a guard and murder is murder. And what would Cyrus think watching you murder someone in what looks like cold blood in his eyes? Are you trying to teach him that it's ok as long as you feel it's right?" |

Cyrus... Could she really be as cold as this? Ready to kill in front of dozens of people, including her own son? On top of that, her companion was under contract to the guard, sworn to uphold the law. Was it worth putting the two of them in that position? She sighed, her inner voices torn between clamoring for vengeance, and letting go. She released the spell that bound the tavern in time. The temperature began to normalize, as she slowly regained control of her magic, though ice still lingered on her frame and the air around her. She addressed the blind man, her voice a mixture of contempt with the slightest hint of pity. "Consider yourself fortunate. You get to live another day because of a child. I hope that thought chokes you..." She turned and began to walk out of the tavern, calling to Cyrus to come along. She walked to one of the nearby piers, and stood on the end, her eyes finally returning to their usual aquamarine. Cyrus approached slowly, able to tell that something was wrong with his ghostly mother. She stopped several feet away, his posture fearful and concerned. "Mama... are you ok?" he asked in a shaky voice. Silnimare stood in silence, facing the bay, her eyes seeming to look to the horizon for some kind of guidance or answers. "If someone hurt me, Cyrus... bad enough to kill me... and hurt you too... could you forgive them?" No sooner had the words left her lips than she realized this was probably way too much to ask such a young child. She was surprised to hear an answer after a brief pause. "I don't know. If they were sorry, and tried to make amends, maybe. There's too many angry people as it is. And if you can't let go, and they're not sorry, doesn't that mean they won?" Silnimare chuckled at her sons wisdom. Truly, from the mouth of babes... But there was a vast gulf between saying what one should do, and having the willpower to actually do it. Meanwhile, the blind thief stood slowly, grabbing his cane. He had heard her walking to the door, and he needed to do something. There was so much he had wanted to say the last few years, but he wondered if he had the strength to. Still, he had to try. He started walking, and accidentally bumped into Kaalia. He apologized, his voice rough and scratchy. "Apologies, but I need to have a word with that young lady." Edited by Silnimare, Tue Feb 6, 2018 4:47 pm.

"I'd be careful." She reminded the old man, "From what I've learned she has a lot of anger in her heart from the last time." She watched as the crippled man hobbled his way slowly towards Sil. He moved like a man on his deathbed. Kaalia scanned him up and down, the man had his legs shattered at one point, like he fell from a great height. His free arm was deformed and dangling- wait...Did he try to kill himself? Did his guilt drive him to dive from a building? What thoughts were burned into his mind to break a man like this? She walked to the entry to the pier, overlooking Sil and the approaching man. The pity she felt for him was only overshadowed by the concern for the psyche of Sil's young boy. Would she truly go through with it? Kaalia hoped her friend would keep her cool, in a much different way than inside the tavern. |

Silnimare turned as she saw the man approaching. Her expression darkened, though it showed more restraint than it had inside the tavern. "What. Do. You. Want." Her words punctuated with anger, brows furrowed. The man held up his withered-looking hand, with some difficulty, the other keeping an unsteady grip on his cane. "I want to talk. I want to say I'm sorry." His voice cracked, though from pain or sorrow was hard to tell. "Oh, do you hear that? He's sorry. That's nice." Silnimare held a finger to her chin in mocking contemplation, as she continued, "Now, thinking about it, how about you take your 'sorry', and shove it up your crippled ass?" The thief shook his head, "I understand your anger. Gods know I've earned it. My name is Corban. Please...." His eyes pleaded with her. "Just let me say my piece. If you want to kill me, or never see me again afterwards. I understand. Please." |
