Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The small inn stood squished on its corner of the city, twin white lanterns flickering with fluttering wings on each side of the intersecting streets. Though not known much for its tourism, Tributary Lane served as the home to several branch offices of various business across Imythess, and Ditchpit Road founded several small cafes and souvenir shops to supply visiting businessmen. At this intersection, surviving first as a laundry then a brewery, the three storied, ramshackled building survived for the past hundred years as a new establishment, building on the success of the last one.

"Welcome, welcome!" cried out the barmaid, an elf with shining blond hair. "Welcome to the Dazzling Dove! Have a seat anywhere and I or my brother will be right with you!"

Last job done in Gloomwood for a while, Logan was finally feeling a bit emotionally leveled out now that he had taken his frustrations with life out on some unsuspecting sods. Gloomwood and Balefire were mostly just places for him to vent physically without anybody questioning his wrath, and there was only so much that could be spent on others before he felt void of wrath.

Coming back from the latest work in the backswamps, the werewolf felt far too lazy to go the full distance back to the Adventurer's Hall in Balefire, and decided to detour to some random nearby tavern. Three stories, some character to its outward appearance without being gimmicky, it seemed like a good enough place to stop by. The adventurer had not been expecting such a site easy on the eyes first thing through the door, but he could hardly deny his silent appreciation for a good-looking barmaid greeting to him cheerily to take a seat.

The werewolf gave a quiet thumb up towards her direction in acknowledgement as the markings on his face flashed approvingly. His backpack hit the floor with a heavy thud as he sat in a chair beside it. Getting the weight off his shoulders was always a welcome sensation, no matter how strong he was becoming.

Pretty elven barmaid aside, he wondered if anything would prove particularly tasty. Only one way to find out, and that was by asking either her or her brother when they came to ask him what he wanted.

"Sorry for you wait, sir," a second voice said, handing Logan a woodcut broadsheet. A second elf stood beside him, this one's hair paler than the barmaids, and tied back in a loose braid rather than flowing freely. "My name's Aywin. May I get you a drink? We have several popular Balefire brands, as well as a few brewed on the premise. May our suggest our Late Harvest red ale? A new offering created by the proprietor."

The bar itself sat mostly empty save for a few drinkers with the casual look of regulars. The original barmaid flitted between them like a dove, laughing as she served them.

"Oh, and that's Gorre, if you were wondering," Aywin offered. "She's in charge of the bar. Seeing as she's busy, however, I thought I'd get your order and ask if you need a room for the duration? We have a few available, clean and very well priced."

"No room for the night, just stopping by on my way to the Adventurer's Hall." Logan said, taking another glance at the more attractive Gorre before turning his attention to Aywin. The sister had one helluva name that earned that double-take, especially with how friendly she seemed. Maybe the werewolf was just reading past pronunciation, but it still was not much of a leap to imagine the more brutal sounding close-homonyms from a name like that. The brother had a considerably less surprisingly intimidating name, and definitely more traditionally elvish-sounding, "What do you have that's non-alcoholic? Also, got any food?"

"Our menu will have a better listing of today's offerings, though our special is Gloomwood Potage served with fresh bread from Fevrin's Bakery. As for our drinks, along with chilled mineral water, we also have coffee and..." Aywin stared down at the broadsheet. One section, the one that possibly doubled the menu's length, was devoted to a variety of herbal blends. "A startling amount of teas. Just...just order the mint if you get that. It's the simplest."

"Sorry about the wait, sir!" Gorre said, almost dancing toward their table with a glass and a small basket. "A complimentary glass of mineral water and some bread rolls to get you started. Aywin, do you mind checking on Mr. Drem? It's about time for his suppertime."

Aywin nodded and excused himself, heading to a set of stairs that wound upward.

"My name is Gorre, Sir Wolf," she said with a grin. "If you need anything, feel free to signal me. Or, of you're ready, I can take your order now."

"Ahh, I guess Gloomwood Potage and a tall glass of super sweet coffee, please." He was tempted to say something more flirtatious, like how he'd like the coffee as sweet as her, but even the bangle dangling off of his right wrist could not bring enough power to push him that far. He had no identity of Jack to hide behind, and the accessory only gave him courage to tackle things he was definitely going to do, not battle against the self-deprecating logic that assured him she would have no interest and would definitely be happier if he did not try such a thing. The closest that any of that got to being said was a slight pause followed by a soft huff, somewhat ashamed of himself for not taking chances.

Logan handed the menu of drinks to Gorre with a slight bow of his head, lamenting his own nature, before taking the complimentary glass of water to wash away his self-inflicted sorrow with a quick guzzle, followed by eating on the bread. First basket was probably the only free one, but it was a good thing that Dungeon Crawling paid out big, because he could just tell that they were going to make up most of his dinner. . . or Breakfast. . . Lunch? Whatever mealtime it was in Gloomwood. He had bad enough time with schedules when there was a sun and moon, but the ever-dark nature of Balefire, no matter how comforting he found it, did nothing to help.

"Certainly! That will be right out, sir," Gorre flashed a bright smile and disappeared behind the bar. She called out the order to the kitchen, another blonde elf speaking to her, this one somehow older seeming despite the equally youthful face. Gorre settled behind the bar after that and, a short time later, a four worker emerged with a food platter. This one, the tallest, was neither blond nor an elf, walking with normal steps rather than the elves effortless grace.

"Here you go, Mr. Wolf," he said, putting a thick soup of vegetables and seafood with a spoon in front of Logan. "Sorry we don't have sweet coffee, but we have coffee and a bowl of sugar, so feel free to make it as sweet as you want, sir! Enjoy your...um..." The redheaded human glanced up at a clock above the door. Though the twenty four point clock showed a time around 0642, various placards around it gave different mealtimes than what one would see so early in the morning. "Um...Late...afternoon snack, I guess? Sorry, still getting used to the time thing. Enjoy!

"Oh, and, um, this might be a weird question, and it's okay if you don't know, but...um...." He pointed up to his freckled face, his green eyes staring with tenuous hope. "Do you know me?"

Gone was the attractive elf, at least from Logan's table for the time being. An unfortunate turn of circumstance, but the werewolf kept that to himself as he began idly munching on bread. It could have used some butter, as such tended to be the way with eateries that got their bread from local bakers, but the general bread-ness of it at least kept the werewolf from filling up on it. It was not bad, definitely leaning towards good, but nothing particularly special or memorable. Maybe he was just spoiled by Cascadia's extravagant nature regarding most things.

After a bit of a short wait, out came somebody who was only interesting to the adventurer given where they were. Even post-cleanup and on the fringe of Balefire, actually maybe especially being on the fringe of Balefire, a human was an unusual site. At least, Logan was mostly certain that the fourth worker was a human. The human-apparent came bringing the werewolf's order along with a surprise bonus question.

"From my experience, the only thing that would make that a weird question is why you're asking it, but no, I can't say that I do know you." Logan said, looking over the person he was certain a stranger, trying to gauge whether or not he had ever seen this person before. Sure enough, the waiter was a mystery to the wolf, "Sorry. Oh, but, uh, thanks for my food. . . Why did you ask, anyway?"

"Oh! No reason!" The human said, giving a nervous smile and waving a loosely closed fist dismissively. "Don't worry about it, and thank you...I mean enjoy. The food. Um...Bye." The human sidesaddled, turned, and quickstepped back toward the bar, somehow making everything even more awkward.

"No luck?" a keen ear could hear Gorre ask the human. He sighed and shook his head. She smiled and patted him on the head, an effort that likely required her to stand on her toes. "How about I play something to cheer you up?" He smiled and nodded, moving behind the bar as she left and went toward a raised corner of the floor occupied by a set of stools and a few instruments.

Chatter among the other diners lowered as she picked up a bodhran drum, rested it next to her body, and began to beat out a tune, somehow turning the wide membrane into a variety of notes depending on her hand's placement and the drumstick's strikes. She began to chant a song, likely in elven, her smooth voice sliding in counterpoint with the staccato beat. The diners watched appreciatively as she sang and swayed, and the human nodded his head in time to the beat, though his eyes were closed.

When the song ended, the barroom gave quiet but honest applause, the human went back into the kitchen, and Gorre bowed and made her rounds about the tables, reaching Logan's last.

"How is everything?" she asked. "Is there anything I can get you? And, ah, I'm sorry about Laithe. He's had a few...memory problems. Nothing for you to worry about. He just likes to chance newcomers can help him."

Without anybody to really talk to, Logan could not help himself but eavesdrop a bit after the ginger went away. It sounded like he was looking for something from somebody, probably anybody. It was a bit odd at first, but the werewolf could not really put his claw on what exactly it might be. In other words, a whole lot of nothing gained from eavesdropping.

Gorre emerged to play a drum, beating out a tune mostly with the intention of cheering up her worker's lost pursuit. The adventurer simply sat back at enjoyed the music along with his soup, dunking what bread he had and using the baked goods to clean up once the bowl was near to empty. The drumbeat was pretty good, and Logan was just enough of a sucker for beat and rhythm to pick that much out as he listened. Drums were as simple as they were complex, but rarely associated with elves, yet still the pretty woman played it well before coming over to the wolf to inquire about his meal as a result of the ginger's questioning.

"Oh, amnesia? That sucks. The food and drums were both really good, though." Logan nodded, finally getting an understanding of what that earlier awkwardness was about. Well, it seemed that 'Liathe', as she was calling him, was at least lucky enough to find work despite his memory loss, "You know, you can probably set up an information bounty of a few silver at the Adventurer's Hall. Keeping it cheap means you won't have people flocking with bad information."

"Well, we did try that a few days after we stumbled upon him," Gorre confessed. "We got suggestions about someone he might be, but it doesn't really match up besides the fact they're both redheads. The suggestion says he's a bard but...." She glanced down at her clasped hands. "Laithe is certainly no bard, despite his love of music.

"Besides, we'd prefer to not make too much of a stir over it. He's enough of an oddity being a human in a mostly nonhuman area. We don't need to bring up his other troubles as an attraction as well. Besides, I like to think he's found a bit of happiness here helping us out, and he's made a bit of a hobby of tea blends."

"Amensia can do crazy things in its erasure. I've heard of rogues who could pick a lock as easily as breathe fumbling with keys after losing their memories." The werewolf shrugged, his only suggestion apparently having already been followed through. It could have been that they had some actual information on who Laithe used to be, or it could have been a mere coincidence, but nothing seemed too outlandish for Imythess, "Well, still good fortune to him to find a place to help him out. How did y'all happen across him? The Maquise's best efforts still don't keep humans particularly safe wandering Balefire at the fringe, do they?"

"Well, no. A major reason we brought him in here. And, well, Mother's been meaning to hire someone, and once our local regulars knew him, he's safe enough within the block, and, well, ah..." She still smiled, but it falted a bit, and her gaze shifted slightly away from Logan's eyes.

"Gorre! Mother needs you!" Aywin called out from across the room.

"Coming!" She called back. "Please excuse me."

After that, Logan didn't see Laithe again, and both the elven siblings deflected more questions, often calling the other over if they seemed at a loss for how to divert Logan's inquisitions. They provided the bill, thanked him for his patronage, and gave him a cup of coffee to take with him.

Outside, the streets were filled with the usual sorts of business folk quickly stepping to their destinations, locals of various sapient species, and the dark gloom of Balefire illuminated with lights. Logan's steps took him past one of the darkened alleys snaking its way beside the inn, when a voice called out from the darkness.

"Mr. Wolf?" it said, and Laithe, with no hint of smell, sight, or sound of his prior presence, stepped into the lanternlight. "Um, hi. I know....I know the D'vorjan's said that they looked but..." He stopped, looked down at his hands, still clasped into loose fists and oddly scarred, then met Logan's eyes with a bright, if hesitant, intensity. "I wanted to go with you...to the Adventure place and look at it. They just said it was a bard, and...I know that can't be me, but there had to be more information than that. I want to look myself."

Well that got strange and a little awkward rather quickly, kind of like they were hiding something, but damned if Logan could be bothered to press for what that was. Imythess was filled with mysteries, and he had just gotten more than his fill of it. Now the werewolf was looking forward to easier jobs, particularly going back to dungeon crawling and finding out what the past had left forgotten in the ruins of some forgotten civilizations. He simply shrugged away the odd behavior and too much worry about what was going on with the amnesiac, going back toe enjoying his food and drink before eventually taking his leave.

The air of mystery interrupted his appreciation for the attractive elven girl, but did not worry too much about that. Some things were best left behind, and the werewolf still needed to go and finalize claim on the job he had taken, lest anybody else try to take a job that was already done.

The coffee did not have much sugar, nowhere near to his liking. Cascadia was definitely better at making sweet drinks. The actually caffeine did little for the adventurer, but he could still appreciate certain roasts and their flavor to a degree. Something about balefire, today, was making him uncomfortable. Just stepping outside of the establishment was striking the werewolf with an unfortunate sense of familiarity to a recent problem he had encountered.

When the voice came directed towards Logan, he slammed his free hand into a pocket dimension and withdrew it sporting a tempered steel gauntlet, quickly aimed at the source of the sound. He did not launch any water from it, but stopped as he recognized it as the ginger human amnesiac, Laithe. Once sure that this was no genuine ambush that managed to slip past his senses, the adventurer lowered his hand and took another sip from his coffee, his hart dancing a little jig beneath his fur-covered chest.

"Yeah, fine, whatever-- but no more sneaking up on my like that. I get ambushed enough as it is, you're lucky I didn't blast you into next week." Logan sighed as he deposited the gauntlet back into apparent nothingness, "My name's Logan, by the way. Let's go see what the Hall's holding. Got any inklings of a clue as to who you might've been, beyond the possible bard stuff?"

"Hmm?" Laithe said at the warning, and only then noticed the weapon in Logan's grip. "Oh! Oh I...Um....thanks for..." He squinted, half closing his left eye. "Not squirting me?" He looked uncertain about the weapon, but very certain about Logan's ability to use it as such.

"My name's Logan, by the way. Let's go see what the Hall's holding. Got any inklings of a clue as to who you might've been, beyond the possible bard stuff?"

"Um, besides the fact...I wasn't trying to sneak up on you?" Laithe said. He sighed. "I...do things like that a lot. Things I just do without knowing how or why. Sorry.

"And sorry for how the twins acted. They just...um...dunno how to say it, but they're scared. Whatever happened to me....they know it was deliberate, so they want to help, but they don't want to attract too much attention."

He rubbed at his arm, choosing the sight of the sidewalk to Logan's eyes. "So, yeah, my sneaking out after you leave is probably going to just scare them more, isn't it? Even though I left a note. But...But I need to see what might be there myself....right?" He directed the last question toward Logan, not the cobblestones, as though he himself lost all trace of deciding which path he should follow.
