Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

By some level of demand, here we are! Might as well get some use out of this ghost town of a feature anyway.

Imythess Drawing Club

Information

This is an OOC faction made up of Imythess players who have any level of interest in drawing. Absolutely anyone can join regardless of experience, schooling, technical skill, available equipment, etc. Even if you make stick figures in MS Paint, or draw once every so often as a casual hobby, you can join if you enjoy drawing at all. We have a very positive, supportive community on the site in general. Constructive criticism won't be given without you specifically asking for it.

Use this thread to share resources, work you've made, and generally talk about drawing. This first post may or may not actively aggregate resources and other important information. Check replies for more resources if I forget to aggregate or don't have time.

Joining the Group

The Imythess Drawing Club janitor is me, Ozan, unless this changes. I won't keep a membership roster, so there's no official procedure for "joining" or "leaving" the group. It all just depends on activity. To be part of the group, draw and be active in the group. It's that simple.

Club Activities

Depending on the Drawing Club's activity level, I might (inconsistently) make activities for members including myself to participate in. There is no guarantee that I will have time to maintain this side-group as actively as other things on the site.

Possible activities include 10-minute drawing challenges, art prompts, art trades, and friendly competitions to see who can practice more in a certain timeframe. Let me know if you're interested in anything in particular, or if some activity might help you maintain or build certain habits.

Resources

Disclaimer: It's impossible to learn proper figure drawing without looking at naked people. All resources for figure drawing should be considered not safe for work (artistic nudity) unless explicitly stated to be otherwise. We believe that linking to these resources is not in violation of the rules since it is not lurid nudity. However, please let us know if you feel incredibly offended.

I've included a few resources that have worked well for me in the list below. Please post recommendations of your own if you have any.

All of the resources included here are free, although I personally have made use of a few dirt-cheap resources ($10 each) as well. Let me know if you want to know those extra things I use.

A quick word of personal advice regarding starting out

Your goal is to train your eye to see things more accurately. Being able to draw means being able to see accurately.

Another quick word of advice about which resources -not- to use

Now after all that blathering, here are the actual resources:

  • Ctrl+Paint: This isn't actually just about digital painting. This guy is an industry professional who takes the "foundations" approach to teaching art -- like what they do in art school. He gives you important ways of approaching art learning that are incredibly valuable for beginners. These tools, like most of the other resources in this section, are specifically taught in a way that allows you to eventually draw from your imagination ("dragons and space marines" as he often puts it).

To use this resource, start from the first video and watch them in order. Don't skip any of his assignments and make sure you're confident applying each concept before moving on to the next video.

  • Proko: The best free lessons on figure drawing I've ever seen. Stan Prokopenko is a professor of art who often explains things in an entertaining, memorable way. Don't skip his critique videos, since he's often joined by illustrator Marshall Vandruff who's pretty much a master of explaining perspective in a way that doesn't make you want to cry.

To use this resource, start from the first video (if you're using his version of fundamentals) or start from the first video in the Figure Drawing section.

  • Daily Figure Drawing Exercises: These sites generate random images for you to use for your drawing practice exercises. I use Line of Action for bread-and-butter stuff, Sketchdaily when I get sick of Line of Action, and the safe-for-work site Posemaniacs (thanks Addie!) when I'm okay with drawing the figure at weird angles.

Keep in mind most photo figure drawing exercise sites I've found have disproportionately more female models than male. If you need more male models for figure drawing practice, I invite someone to find a site with more even distribution.

  • Visual Measuring Exercises: Once you've learned visual measuring and the linear block-in method on Ctrl+Paint, improving your ability to see angles accurately can make your drawings improve. This game helps, especially if you play it with your sketchbook out. For my own practice I guess the angle, then draw the angle (and label it with its actual measurement) in my sketchbook as a single line. The specific numbers aren't important if you're close enough, you're just training your eye to see angles better.

  • Color Exercises: Other than "Guess That Color" on Ctrl+Paint, try the Munsell hue test game to train your ability to perceive one trait of color: hue (where it fits on the color spectrum). This game does not train your ability to perceive value (brightness) or saturation (greyness) in colors.

  • Stretches for Hand and Wrist Pain: A video that provides useful hand and wrist stretches. I usually get pain in my hand on days when I'm drawing for long periods of time, and this helps. Pick the stretch that targets where you're hurting.

  • For When You're Tired and Sad: It's easy to forget why you're even bothering with this. Try reading this essay on the benefits of knowing many skills rather than being a specialist. If you have more time, you could also poke around this website which talks a lot about deliberate practice. I do not recommend looking at fantastic artwork, since that tends to deter rather than inspire me. You could be different, though. If you respond well to motivational videos -- which excitedly oversimplify the world -- I like this one in particular.

I am really excited about this! I love the idea of prompts and art trades.

I'm going to use some of these resources later tonight and get some drawing done. I'll be back later to share pictures, if that's okay!

Oh! Also! If you want to do some more SFW figure/gesture drawing, I've found that using dancers (like ballerinas) is a great way to do it. Most pictures on Google are mid-movement, which makes for fun gestures, and clothing can be limited to leotards and leggings, which are tight fitting. SFW, but still get to practice some cool stuff!

Sorry to double post, I'm mobile and a new post is easier than editing.

Good idea. I'll do that next time, since I'm getting pretty sick of my existing websites' images.

Yay! I am glad you got this up and running mate. Ever since I saw you talking about it in the CBox, I decided I would try and do a quick drawing each day (lapsed twice already, but oh well). Improvement isn't my focus, it's more solidarity with you arty folks, and having fun with our two.

My inaugural drawing, Keelin

A rainbow star the girls loved

An octopus which I then used as a flash fiction prompt

Peacocks. Madeline's hand traced one, then my interpretation

I've noticed I draw differently when it is with/for my daughters or just me.

I am still going with my sort-of-but-not-really daily drawings. A while back, I was doing an alien, because aliens. Rosalyn decided to draw a couple as well. I thought they were great, and the perfect thing for me to work out layers, once and for all. So I asked a mate to explain the concept in words, one syllable or less. After a real quick go, the secret was mine. I then did a real rushed proof of concept for the alien I drew (as I am using it as a writing prompt), and since I could duplicate the process decided it was time to do it on the first one of Rosalyn's:

Layered Alien

The next one is going to be way harder, as it has a chilling thousand yard stare that I am not sure I will be able to capture

I love love love your aliens, Snellopy! Your daily drawing habit is a serious inspiration, since I can't manage even that lately. My mental block related to drawing, which was made embarrassingly clear during the last Drawtime, has worsened over time to the point that I start getting panic attacks whenever I try to draw, even for fun. However, I've identified the cause of the block and will be working to address the deeper issue so that in the future I can go back to doing this really fun hobby.

Please post more of your drawings whenever you can! I love to see them!

I am really sorry to hear you're blocked mate, so I will try and post something every week or so to tide you over.

First up, we have one you've seen already, the fan art from Sailing to Suler, all of us on the Windslicer

And next, is the second of the two Rosalyn inspired alien attempts at mucking about with layers. This time I didn't just slavishly copy her picture, but jiggered it around a bit for stylistic reasons. I feel that her mouth went great with the dead look in the eyes, but I couldn't pull either off with my skill yet.

come with me human... it is time

I even tried very basic shading and highlights, and am amazed how much of a difference they make. It was much faster, as I have worked out that with some mistakes when I do it on the wrong layer, I can just lasso it and change it, and don't have to rage quit out swearing.

I've also worked out that for me, I need to name layers or I end up messing stuff up.

Now that a period of instability is finally coming to an end, I've been having thoughts of picking up drawing practice again. It's popping into my head more frequently, and I even dreamed about drawing last night hahaha

Snellopy, are you still doing your daily drawing habit? You really are an inspiration!
