Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Malaure looked oit at the island. Ah hopefully this time would go better. She joined the captain near the front seeing her release a black metal bird.

Ghe bird flew out towards the island. It would notice several small mokeys seemingly constantly flaring up with fire quite often. The flashes of these ones were small and impossible fo sed at a distance. Each shore had maybe ten to twenty of these mokeys seemingly lazing about or ocasionally stabing fish sith crude spears. Each shore had a large great ape which constantly burned with flame. These apes could fkare uo when calling out. Clearly the leaders of these small watch groups. The ape flare ups could barely be seen from the show by those with very good eyes. The bird could see an active lava flow on the back east side of the island. The flow had not reached the ocean, but would within the hour. Boiling towers of steam would errupt around that area. The last thing was a few signs of a village near a hill just before the volcano. Indvidulaly the signs were hard to spot, but there was lots of signs of something going on.

On the ship Malaure spoke up, "Well first task is getting to that island. The less those native mokeys notice us the better. I suspect the next piece is either at thd volcano or in their village. I hope it isn't the village. It was well gaurded last time I was here. Any ideas on how to go about this?" A slight rumble could be heard comming from the Volcano. It did not sound unsusual for an active volcano. Then again too many rumbling sounds and they could be facing an eruption.

Hearne leaned against a banister next to where Branse sat, watching the bird take flight. Branse had entwined his legs around the beams of the banister, a bottle dangling in one hand. Offering it to Hearne as he neared, the mage gladly took it up and pulled from it hard. Frowning, he eyes the label as he moved the liquid from cheek to cheek, thinking for a moment. “Branse.” “Yes, darlin?

Hearne produced a cork as if snatched from midair, planting it firmly in the open mouth. “This,” He declared, plucking the cork free for one more swig before stoppering it and handing it back to the ivyn “is my private stock.” The Ivyn took the bottle, attempting to free the stopper to no avail. “Kindly put it back where you found it.

Giving a very put-upon sigh, the ivyn pouted and vanished into the map room. Shrugging off his light, rough leather coat, Hearne bared his arms to the sea winds. Now directly in contact with the sun's light, patterns began to darken along his hands and forearms. Ink darkened to black in geometric lace patterns lined with runic script from knuckle to elbow on each arm, his forearms holding a net-like pattern that resembled diamond-shaped scales.

Each “scale” was empty of ink save for a single black sigil on each, every one holding a different magical signature as if imbued with power by a different mage. A few scattered at seeming random were bronze-colored and held significantly more power than the others.

On the underside of his left forearm was a clean stretch from wrist halfway to his elbow holding six different bronze sigils, each one a different coven's brand. More tattoos vanished into his sleeves and were hinted at under his loosely-laced neckline. One silvery mark of long-healed scar tissue faded into view on his right cheek, a foreign brand smoothed and thinned by healing magic and time.

If you're worried about the village, we could always take a look at the volcano first. I'm fairly confident in my ability to shield us from heat. Otherwise, I'm always game for a good fight.” He pulled out a half-smoked cigar. Biting down on one end, he slowly drew on it. Of its own volition, the put out end of the cigar began to sear at its ragged edges, turning to embers and producing a good deal of heavy smoke.

Holding it for a moment, Hearne imbued the smoke with a measure of power and exhaled. The plume didn't fade into the air as it exited, coming out as a silvery, cloudy mass that whorled and flowed into itself, shaping into a dog-sized bird that spread its wings. The bird was decidedly hawk-like in shape, but had no visible feathers, instead the whorls of smoke seeming to solidify. It took to the air as it drifted, looking for all the world like a normal if discolored bird. Hearne gave a guttural command and his eyes grew milky, the bird's own eyes becoming glowing golden lights as it left the ship, following the iron bird to scout the island.

Always makes me sicker than the actual ship does.” Hearne muttered, staring into the void as he puffed on his cigar, seeing through the bird's eyes.

Zinnia accepted the report when the bird finally returned, and she sent off her raven to do whatever it was mechanical birds did when they weren’t scouting or pecking out an enemy’s eyes. Going down into her cabin, she readied herself for the journey ashore; she made certain to pocket two enchanted apples as well - one for the journey to the island, and one for the journey back. Then she returned top-side.

“So!” she said when they approached the island at last. “Time t’b’come a ghost.”

And with that, she gave the order to ensorcelle the ship. The stealth plating bent the light around the ship, rendering it invisible to the naked eye, and the engine was shut off. The sails were dropped, one by one, until they were moving at a very slow pace. Finally, the anchor was weighed.

“Hope neither o’ y’mind get’n wet.”

That was all she said before she looked to the skies and began to cast her spell. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, the clouds began to shift in the sky. Where once there had been a few wispy bands and clumps of white, now there were masses growing larger and darker…and thicker. And as they grew thicker, they grew heavier. It wasn’t long at all before a heavy rain began to fall, and it wouldn’t be long at all before the fire monkeys and their fire ape leaders were (hopefully) doused enough to deal with rather easily. Zinnia nodded curtly once the spell was done and then turned to her two companions; only Helga remained, as the other two stoats had no interest in drowning before they even reached the water.

“Righ’,” she said. “I c’n make m’own way ‘long the water.”

She pulled out an apple, shined it a bit, and then took a massive bite of it. When she had enough of a mouth free enough to speak again, she did so.

“So ye’ll ‘ave t’make yer own way ‘ere, ‘s well.”

She grinned as she took another bite of the apple.

“See y’ashore.”

And with that, she leapt over the side of the outwardly invisible ship.

Malaure felt the magic taking form. She knew this spell. Soon the monsoon was active and sweeping towards the island. The heavh rain did drive off the apes along the shore. They were none to fond of the rain. Hissing steaming errupting from the big ones could be vaugely seen by those with good eyes.

Malaure grinned at seeing the now choppy watter. Well this would be a chalenge. She buckled her helmet on fully sealing up. This would prevent any chance of drowning. She then jumped in eagerly andcstwarted to swim under her own power towards the shore. She made it to the shore with her skill without too much of a problem. Zinnia wasn't too far off. She went up to join the small captain. "Nice idea and a fun challenge.. now hopefully Hearne made it too." She looked to see where Hearne was at the same time.

The oddest thing she noted was the storm just stopped about ten feet into the forest as if it met a barrier. No cloud moved beyond it rain hissed as it splattered against this barrier. It wasn't clear of the exact size, but it probably covered most of the island. Malaure could only feel magic, but it felt strong to her. "Yesh...how did I miss that monstrosity last time....that is one scarry barrier." Maybe someone tapping into the nature of the volcano? To those that could see magic clearly it would be odd as if fire magic just was errupting up from the ground to fight the water magic. The magic was reacting as if alive too; recoilong at times when hit by watter then flaring up in that section. It was likely either a powerful ritual, some large complex magical artifact or a powerful elemental behind this level of magic. It had not even been visble until the magical monsoon had come in contact with this barrier.

If one tried to pass through it would feel warm and water magic would become about twice as dificult to use or channel. Zinnia passing through would feel maybe some vauge resentment or annnoyance as if the magic knew she cast the monsoon spell. There was no intial sign of the fire monkeys at least. Then again perhaps they were hidding.

Hearne stood with arms crossed as the short woman cast her spell, watching intently at the way she wove her own magic. She was talented, rivaling many he'd watched in his long years of teaching and fighting. It was tight, efficient work. He grunted as she finished up, instinctively reaching for something on his belt that wasn't there.

Patting idly, he instead reached into the collar of his shirt and pulled out a thin cigar that definitely wasn't there a moment ago, his shirt leaving no room for shenanigans. He wore a thematically-appropriate wide belt and nickel-plated buckle for this seafaring adventure. An oiled leather bandolier was slung over a shoulder, bearing three leather pouches, two bronze message tubes containing prepared scrolls, a dagger, and three darts tucked into slits in the leather. Not even the sword he'd been inscribing earlier was anywhere in sight.

Without any spellcasting gesture, he bit off the end of the cigar and took a drag, the end blackening and then lighting itself on nothing but the air pulling through. Exhaling released a plume of smoke that formed the shape of one of the captain's stoats, appearing to swim on the air before giving way to the winds. He leaned on the railing as his companions dove into the ocean, choosing to swim ashore. He lifted a free hand toward the shore, focusing on a point and making a quick series of hand gestures before motioning as if parting a curtain.

When his companions swam ashore and made their way up the beach, fighting the shore waves, Hearne was sitting on a large stone with a nearly-spent cigar clenched in his teeth. The rain avoided him, seeming to try to part around him. The few drops that made it through steamed as it his his skin, leaving him pleasantly dry and hair still flawlessly in place

Taking a final draw on the cigar turned the final half inch to ash as his captain and employer advanced. He ground the end into the sand and stood, thumbs in his pockets and rocking back on his heels pleasantly.

About time, ladies. I was starting to consider storming the island myself.” He gave them an amused smile, shining an obnoxiously white smile.

The captain grinned as she tossed the barest fragment of the core over her left shoulder; it landed with a splash in the water somewhere behind her. She didn’t care enough to see precisely where.

“Wha’, an’ ‘ave all th’fun t’yerse’f?”

Zinnia was somewhat troubled by the barrier that Malaure pointed out to her. This was quite unfortunate. If the fire magic was actually pushing back her storm, then her other spells probably wouldn’t be much use, either. Fortunately, she was a halfling of more than one trick - but it was still a pain the in arse. She took a deep breath and nodded.

“Righ’,” she said, turning to the draconic one. “So wha’s ‘e plan, ‘xactly?”

Malaure pointed towards the volcano's peak. "get ourselves up there I would say. Given everything the next piece we are looking for is probably atuned to fire and that is the bigest natural source of fire around. Plus there is supposed to ba temple up there. Just keep an eye put for our firey monkey friends. Who kniws when or where they could show up."

Going forward she passed through the barrier. They would be walking for fifteen minutes through the fairly heavy jungle like plants and trees. Many had small signs of being burned, but seemed highly adapted to such problems. The area was slightly warmer than outside the barrier, not including the teperture drop ffom the storm Zinnia created. Hearne might notice that some plants were odd or unatural. He could possible study them on the move as they were moving cautiously or at least Malaure was. Hearne could also request them to slow down or stop so he could investigate in more detail. Of course time was precious as who knew when something might show up. Regardless at the fifteen minute mark Zinnia was the first to hear something aproaching fast. Her long ears catching the sound of many monkeys and at least two louder voices crying out. They were far away given they were faint to her ears, but were getting closer fast. They had a some time before the creatures arrived. Malaure would be the second to notice if Zinnia did not speak up, but she did notice several precious minutes latter.

OOC:Anyone speak, Ignan or the langauge of the plane fire or fire elemental etc? It is the native langauge of these monkeys. So if you do I will need to know for the next post as people may hear what they are yelling ir saying.

OOC: Hearne does understand the native common languages of the major planes and especially that of the Plane of Fire, so he'd very likely know what they were saying being an extraplanar himself.

With a flourish of the hand the magus produced a knife as a stage performer would a bouquet of flowers, taking samples of the foreign plants. There were swaths of burned foliage, but in the ash green shoots were sprouting up. He'd seen similar effects with bamboo, thriving on the ash and coming back stronger for being burned through. Some of the other plants had adapted in a similar way, it seemed.

With another flourish he vanished the knife and bag of samples. They would be sitting on a table in the Gingered Mare, ready for Branse to move into his study. Trailing along behind the duo he began to feel the shifts in the ambient mana. Turning his attention to the skies over the brush, he focused and saw the shift in spectrum. “Sounds like we're going to have company shortly.

He brushed his hands together as if trying to warm them. Walking behind the pair he made finger motions, twisting and thrusting his palms outward in an attempt to draw lightning from the stormy skies. His hands immediately went numb, tingling with painful pins and needles.

His hands began to glow, power spitting and crackling between fingers. Sparks turned to flame that danced across the backs of his hands, melting away into geometric patterns before sinking back into his skin. Grimacing, he tucked his dimming hands into his pockets. After a few seconds the glow had faded to nothing. He felt his churning pool of mana begin to settle.

Making the gestures a second time, the air grew hot and the scent of hot iron filled his nostrils, power turning to green sparks. Wrapping his fingers around the growing ball of power felt like a small creature writhing against his skin.

Zinnia wasn’t entirely thrilled by the prospect of a steep mountain climb to a temple that might or might not be there, which in turn might or might not have what they were looking for. Nevertheless, she nodded. They set off at a steady, moderate pace but were soon slowed by the increasingly thick foliage. Much of the jungle had grown thick enough that the rain was soon lessened in its fall upon them, though it still fell heavily enough that it was anything but a quiet or dry journey. Helga shook herself at one point, and Zinnia grinned as a generous amount of rainwater was sprayed violently in all directions; once Helga settled down again, she resumed eyeing the halfling’s pair of companions beadily. The heat was quickly drying Helga’s fur as well as the halfling who bore her, and while the storm raged just beyond the area of effect of the island’s inherent fire magic, the trio was soon very dry indeed - except for the sweat. While Zinnia didn’t mind the heat in the slightest, she was certain the others were probably drenched by now. The only thing the storm did manage within the area of effect was a slight drop in temperature, so that might have relieved Zinnia’s companions a little - though probably not entirely.

The foliage itself was difficult to move through, but Zinnia had little trouble. She was often moving about the rigging aboard the Weasel, much like her stoats; it was how the ship had gotten its name, though the stoats obviously seemed to think it was for them alone. Weasel might be an insulting nickname, but they treated it like some kind of badge of honour or something. They took pride in it. So for Zinnia, the terrain wasn’t really much of a problem. The other advantage she had was her size; because she was smaller, she could get through the jungle much more easily.

It was Zinnia who was likely the first to hear something, although her rabbit ears picked up on it at roughly the same moment that Helga perked up; she bristled, not liking whatever it was she was detecting, and Zinnia shifted her head upon her shoulders in annoyance to scratch away the sudden itch. When that didn’t work, she lightly thumbed the stoat, and it straightened itself out as best it could, using its fur to scratch Zinnia’s itchy neck in the process. Once relieved, Zinnia was able to focus on the sound. But by then, everyone likely heard it. It was Hearne who first said something, though.

“Lot o’ it,” she replied.

She then readied one of her magic dice in her right hand, while her left hand pulled her ARC onto her head properly. She slipped her ears behind her and pulled her cloak around her so that they would mostly be shielded, and then she pulled up the hood to secure the ARC in place so that it wouldn’t move. She tuned the ARC so that she could hear what was going on around her with little trouble, and even better, she could deafen her enemies if they had to make a quick escape - which they probably would. Finally, Helga took Zinnia’s cues as a sign to close her eyes and hide the fact that she was actually alive, not just a dark-blue fur stole. She listened closely to what was going on, though, and her hidden nose twitched frantically as she tried to catch a whiff of something other than brimstone people-smells and jungle-smells.

“Shall w’dance?” Zinnia whispered quietly, a dangerous spark of mischief twinkling in her eyes as a small smile settled upon her lips.

To Malaure and Zinnia the monkey talk meant nothing, but angry aounding screeches as they got close and spoted the small group.
Hearne heard the following in ignan

There was two Ape sized fire monkeys both with fire auras balzing. They charged one at Malaure and one at Hearne. The larger of the two went for Hearne. He was not dumb either. As he moved by aticipating attacks and seemed to have at least some basic knowledge or sense of magic. An experienced warrior of his tribe at maybe expert level.

Malaure's opponent was a bit smaller, but still had the edge in strength. She ended up throwing him as he charged at her. She followed up with the a kick to his head. Her armor kept the flames at bay for the brief seconds they were in contact, but the heat was enough for her to not want prolonged contact, even with her fire dragon heritage. The fire ape was stuned from the kick, but she had to retreat a step as several small balls of fire were launched at her and Hearne's direction. Five small fire monkeys were sitting maybe a hundred feet away in trees launching weak, but fast fire balls. Each ball probably wouldn't do much, but they were throwing alot. They probably could not keep up such a bonbardment for long and luckily were not great shots.

Zinnia had launched her die as the remaining fifteen small monkeys charged at her. Her die let off lightning and took out one almost instantly and stuned three others for at least a bit. The little guys mostly swarmed and had weak fire on their skin. Enough for a light burn if it contacted skin directly. They were fast, but not too smart baring maybe one or two in the small swarm.

Hearne followed the conversation with perked ears, eyes churning a pyrite flame as he fell into the proper state of mind. It had been some time since he'd heard it, but Ignan was an intuitive language for him. as their attackers burst in on them, the small emerald flame clenched in his hand spread over his arms, turning a bright gold and red whorl, tightly controlled like a second layer of skin, churning and smooth. They formed claws at the ends of his hands, the smell of hot iron surrounding him as his hands showed white-hot through the blaze.

He reached toward the ape head-on, snatching out to dissipate its spellwork with only mild difficulty. It was talented, though from what he saw of it its grasp of magic was intuitive and natural rather than studied and structured. Each had its place in this world, but in a contest of mages it was a marked difference. As he began bringing his talent to bear, an aura of it radiated outward from him like body heat. His eyes churned more rapidly, visibly a ring of golden fire in place of an iris. That light shook and split, forming a pair of golden rings in each of his eyes.

The small balls of flame flew in their direction and he largely ignored them, taking the shots without concern as he advanced on the larger ape. Magical fires rolled off him like a breeze caressing flesh and he met physical attacks, dissuading the ape's far greater physical strength with a hellfire grip. Lips peeling back, he showed the ape rows of black iron teeth carved with scarlet-burning runes. Opening wide, golden light rolled out and flame followed, releasing a jet of flame up close, thrusting with burning hands to shove at the elemental ape.

"Stop everyone or I show you to the eternal flame." He snarled in Ignan, voice suddenly sounding much like boulder scraping against boulder, deep and grating and promising menace. "Stop your brothers, Little Spark"

The large ape felt fear he spoke in Ignan, "Fire Lord!... please forgive this lowly one. Only great fire shaman has right to deal with you. All retreat tell the Shaman." The large ape shivered in fear and the other ran away. Unfortunately the small ones had caught Zinnia by surprise and carried her off. Malaure at least had not seen her. The large ape could only hope he was let go. He had no sign of hostility. In fact he seemed to greatly fear Hearne.

If Hearne questioned the great ape he would learn there was great ceremony being held at midnight at an important temple to the fire apes. If he saw Zinnia captured and asked about her he would find Zinnia would be safe until midnight when the great ceremony took place at the great temple. Any captured outsider was saved a sacrifice for the great mountain god of fire.

Malaure looked surprised, "Well you certainly scared them. What the heck did you say? Umm... Zinnia where are you? Did she get separated from us did you see Hearne "

OOC: Mac is busy so Zinnia will be captured for a bit.

Once cowed, the ape seemed easy enough to wheelde information out of. After a short exchange of snarls and rumbles, Hearne turned his head to his employer. Sounds like there's something going on tonight. These apes-- He gave the talkative one a lips-peeled snarl, have a temple on the island. Could be worth looking into.

Giving the ape a thoughtful look, he let his flames die down for a moment. As he spoke his voice still sounded like boulders grating together. Show us to where our friend was taken.

With a shiver he set aside his infernal nature, eyes dimming moderately and teeth gradually lightening to their unusually bright normalcy. wiping a light coating of ash off his hands, he gestured to the forest the smaller monkeys had vanished into, presumably with their friend. Shall we?

Malaure nodded, but the ape shook his head. "I can not lead you Fire Lord. They go home to Shaman who is also Fire Lord. His words match yours and home is home. I not bring danger to it."

The Ape was ready to fight and moved to strike Hearne if he tried to insist on the Ape showing them them to the village. It would not mind showing them to temple. If Hearne did force the issues with going to the village the ape would fight. It probably wouldn't be a long fight as Shirine could subdue it with Hearne fairly quickly.

OOC: Sorry for the short post.
