Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

“Gods be, sounds like you two had an adventure. I really can't compare. There's nothing spectacular happening up in the pass, just the occasional caravan or traveler passing by. It's part of why I took to the ranger branch of the guard. Opportunity to leave for a few days at a time. Hunting and keeping the area safe. There are a good few mountain lions about and the occasional boar, but we aren't too troubled by the nastier creatures deeper in. Bandits aren't much of an issue, it's harder to survive out there without civilization, but there are a few bands around.” He shrugged.

“I met Brenna a year and half after I left my troupe behind and joined up. Learned to swing a sword and use a spear to keep myself from getting clawed up. My climbing hook gave and I broke my leg a couple miles outside of town. She was out gathering herbs as apprentice to the healer and came across me a couple hours later. I didn't know many people outside the guard but by name. We got to talking. I told her about my troupe and life on the road and she told me about growing up there and learning to be healer when the old woman passed away. It's amazing the things you hear in a healer's house. An impressive amount of gossip.” He returned to himself, chuckling as his mind wandered back but not blushing.

“It was simple, really. She was beautiful and charming and had a wit that cut every which way. I accompanied her to gather herbs and she pretended to be interested in learning a blade, as much for me to guide her movements up close as to actually learn, I suspect. Nothing adventurous, but it was exciting all the same.” His mood went a little melancholy. “I've been gone a year now. She probably thinks me dead.”

Terra was week against this sort of thing and teared up a little hearing how long he had been separated, "Ah it must have been so hard on both of you." One of the twins patted him on the back as if to comfort him.

Shirine nodded understanding the problems. As a mercenary there had been several people that were lost at times. It was never easy telling a person. After a year most tended to guess a person was dead. Then again adventures sometimes took a while if one didn't have fast transport. The land of Imy was not small by any means. She tried to cheer the fellow up, "Well worry less about that and more about how you will surprise her with your return. Norwood makes some pretty good stuff, so perhaps bring her a little present as an apology for being so late. Really though bringing yourself back safe and sound will probably be the best present for her. So make sure you keep your self sharp on any mission we send you out on okay.

Another plus side is you will have some adventures of your own to tell after leaving us. As mercenaries you will find this world has more strange than normal in it. Most people just don't get the chance to experience it."
She tried to keep her tone light and cheerful to hopefully boost Roche's mood.

“After the last year, I almost hope I don't have many more adventures. But I'll go mad if I just sit around. I'll have to make it up to her somehow when I do get back.” His smile quirked up a little more with that and he settled for enjoying the walk. For the first time in months, he genuinely enjoyed the scenery of Norwood, feeling every beam of sunlight brushing his cheeks.

The path began to open up several hours later in their walk, their party quiet but for the occasional conversations between a couple members. Roche kept quiet through it all, finding something in his new companions that he didn't realize he'd missed so much. It was something he'd had in his youth, and much more privately with Brenna. Companionship was evident in these people who spent their lives together, working together and knowing each other thoroughly.

Personal companionship was lovely, but having a close-knit group of people was a different sort of comfort. The rangers were trusted, but they didn't spend time together but for the brief days spent in town and the briefer times reporting on their trip.

The trees began to open up into a sudden wall of wood and thorn. He froze, staring up at the massive wall that appeared to have grown in place. As far as he could tell, it was just as alive as the trees around and supporting it.

“I'm assuming this wasn't always here.”

Shirine smiled at the man's surprise. "Oh yeah don't worry that is just the wall to our camp. We aren't exactly a small company. Not huge, but not small either. Anyways the gate is a little over to our right." She walked a bit farther coming to the gate. A guard up on top of the wall called down. One could hear some movement as the people beyond lifted off the bar that kept the gate locked. Then it was slowly pushed open.

Shirine walked in to some welcoming calls of 'welcome back captain' and such. She spoke to Roche, "Well welcome to our home. You can see the training yards and over near the end the first building is the infirmary. Then going from to the left we have the mess hall, the bar and the barracks is the last building where you will be bunking down for the time being. For now though we should head to the main office and get the paperwork filled out. Once you are registered you will be able to move around freely. It shouldn't take too long.

She led Roche through the camp towards the main office which was up a large central tree in the back.

Roche just shook his head as the gates were pushed open from within, revealing the strange architecture inside. It resembled much the elven villages, most buildings worked into the surroundings rather than the surroundings destroyed to house newcomers. He nodded as Shirine spoke, but his attention was being drawn away as he noticed his fingernails.

They were dirty, near-black flecks stuck under them. Pulling the fingertip away to see beneath, his head began to swim at the reddish stains around his nails where they'd dug into the bandit's throat. He grew somber and slowed his pace following behind the captain until he came to a stop.

Eyes clenched, he dashed off toward a small shed. Bracing himself against the back wall of the shed, out of sight of anyone watching, he began retching.

Nothing came of it, just bile and spitting saliva, but he felt the need to get something out of him. It passed after a moment, leaving his knees weak and head light. He pressed his back to the wall and slid down into a crouch, wiping the spittle from his lips and running a hand over his bound-back hair.

He kept his eyes closed and rested his head back against the wall.

Shirine noticed the signs a few moments before Roche fled behind a shed. She moved over, but waited until she could not hear any more retching. He was greener than she thought. She came around the corner seeing him sitting there. She offered a hand. "So that you not kill many people? That bandit your first real one not done in self defense? Or something else? Regardless I think you have a few choices. I can help you to the infirmary where you can lay down for a bit until you feel better. Probably can wash up a bit there too. Or I take you to the bar and get you drunk enough to let everything out. Well those are the best options I know of at least."

He could take her hand or not, but if he took it she would help him to whatever location he chose. She did not have a clear kemory of ever having gone through this herself, but she had seen plenty of green reqruits act like this after their first real job. Killing cratures was not hard, having another person's blood on your hands was harder. Still mercenaries had to get used to it. Still the best always felt something. The moment they stopped feeling the after effects of battle was when then became another tyoe of monster...worst part was it was hard to see that line. Still she had lived this sort of life for a long tike now and was more than used to it. Hopefulky she could help Roche throigh this bad patch. realky this was why bars were so popular among mercenaries.

“Sorry, thanks.” He spat to the side, shakily taking her hand and rising. “I’ve spent my time fighting and

hunting beasts. As a ranger I had to keep beasts from venturing too close to the city. Now and then there would be bandits, but I’ve only dealt with them a couple of times and always brought them in alive for questioning.” Roche cleared his throat and leaned against the wall of the shed on his feet for a moment while he gathered his strength.

“Even in the pits, there were heavy consequences for killing another slave unless it was a fight to the
death. My freedom fight was supposed to be to the death, but he was hardly old enough to grow a beard. I refused to kill him, but that bastard did it for me.” He waved a hand, meaning the bald man who he had killed in the merchants home. “I’ve never actually killed a man, in hot blood or cold. But everyone was dying. I thought I would too, and seeing him about to kill that elf…” he winced.

“I got angry. If I’m honest, I didn’t entirely kill him to save the man. I was angry he had killed that boy. He was always one of the worst to the slaves.” Roche brushed off the back of his pants. “I’ll be alright. Or maybe I won’t, but it’s something I’ll need to deal with without drink. I have a feeling it’s going to be a necessary evil in the real world, away from my sheltered small town.”

He dreaded the knowledge that killing may well become part of his new life. His mother had always taught him that life was precious, a thing to be preserved if possible. Hunting animals was one thing, as was defending the innocent, but the murder of another was abhorrent. It was why he had become a mountain ranger in the first place. To protect the innocent. "At least this place is beautiful, when you have to do something so ugly for a living."

“How was your first kill?”

Shirine listened as he refused the drink and talked about things. She had to shrug her shoulders a bit at his question though, "I don't know really I sort of have what people call amnesia, so a large portion of my past is not all that clear to me. I know I was in this business though and probably got used to it some where in the past. Oh yeah and I am at least over a hundred... so yeah that blank space isn't exactly a small amount of time.

I do have a lot of instincts and just sort of ... well not sure how to put it, but I just remember my skills and abilities. Some I have trained since memory loss of course, but a lot I just sort of know without knowing why or how I learned them... Plus other things happened in my past... yeah sort of complicated and not pleasant to talk about. Yeah probably best not get into all that.

I have seen people go through it though and mostly the answer is just rest and reflection or drink. Everyone comes to their own answer really. Though if you want to talk to someone I would recommend either Dorell Armerion or Carol Torielmen. Dorell is our oldest member, a dwarf and you can't miss him stopping around in his dwarven plate. He has a lot of wisdom if you need. Carol is one of our newer talents a nice young elf and she hasn't been in the business too long so can probably be the most understanding. She is friendly too and not to hard to find if you ask around.

Hmm... I sort of rambled a bit there, but anyways you feeling well enough to continue with getting you singed up or would you feel better laying down for a bit?

She sort of angled to the infirmary to start with, but if he said he was okay she would turn back towards the main office where they could get him registered.

Roche nodded. Rest sounded good right about now, but registering to join their mercenary company would come first. “I envy you not remembering your first. I'm not sure I'll ever forget. But at least it was someone deserving, and at least partly in saving another's life.” He inhaled a couple times slowly until his breathing steadied and his stomach settled.

“Sorry to pry. I can understand wanting to put things behind you. Appreciate the help in any case.” He tucked his hands into his pockets and out of sight, putting it aside until he could find a stream or bath to wash up thoroughly later. He felt like he could scrub for hours and still be unclean.

“I'll be alright. Let's go get the paperwork taken care of. I can rest up for a little while and vent everything into training tomorrow if I can find a partner. It'll be good to brush up on my swordsmanship. Always set me at peace, if only for a little while.” He headed for the trees housing the offices.

The climb was thankfully short. After the day's many hours of walking and the brief battle earlier, Roche was physically drained. His steps dragged a little, but not enough to trip him up.

Shirine appretiated the resolve to keep going. It was a good sign in a new reqruit; even a temporary one. She found a chair near by for him to sit in. A fee moments latter she brought out a some papers. She handed them to him with some ink and a pen. There waz a suitbake side tabld to write on. Now you just have to fill out your basic info on the first page. The rest is just the rules and regulations used to run things aroind here.mostly stuff on how to get jobs, who gets priority on missions, How to decide who is enchargein emergencies and lots on the things that had to be made rules because peolle were stupid.

Anywaus read it over and sign the last page and we are done."

She pulled up her own chair waitong for him to finish. If he had questions she could answer them of course.

Assuming he did not ask anything too detailed theu were soon done and she moved to help him down and to the baracks. Half way to the baracks her eaes pearked and she motioned for Roche to stop. Thoigh she smiled and took her were form. "Now then which of you two is trying to catch me today." At her words a large feline form leaped from the roof where it was hidden. A medium large tigger landed in front of Shirine giving off a deep growling purr. It butted her a bit and Shirine had to brace hsrself while petting the head.

"Ah it is you Ninquemiel. Ah that is Roche a new friend. Rocje this is Ninquemiel. I rescued her and her sister as newborns after their mother fell to a poacher. They aren't fully grown yet, but are friendly and well trained. Well as much as you can train any feline. They do like to roam about.. They won't harm you... well besides the ocasional playfull pounce. They usually let people up after a couple minutes. They will probably grow out of it. The twins own a pair of large cats too and they calmed down a bit once past the kitten stage. Any ways let her say hi so she can get to know your sent. She will pass it to her sister too. Come on say hi to our new friend."

Shirine patred the tiger and it slowly moved towards Roche. It surprisingly looked a little timmid for a massive preditor. Shirine did keep her arms near the neck though just as a precaution. A good yank on the scruff stopped any problems. Both tiggers viewed her as their mother after all. She doubted her little kitten would do anything bad unless provoked though. At most Ninquemiel would sniff and rub against him a bit before running off again.

Roche sank into the chair gratefully, taking the sheaf of papers and frowning as he pored over the contract slowly. He'd learned his letters on the road in his early years and was taught the basics of reading, but it was not his greatest skill. Still he managed to pick through it, thankful that the persons typically reading these papers would be unlikely to recognize too many words. He familiarized himself with the various rules with the best effort he could muster at the time, raising an eyebrow at some of the added rules, trying to picture the scene that would require such rules.

Inking the quill provided, he scratched off his name in a passable scrawl and set the papers down on the desk. He didn't have many questions. It wasn't as if he would be doing anything else in the immediate future. He allowed her to help him up, but waved her off with a small smile as his strength gradually returned to him, forcing himself to keep moving and pace the woman. His new commander.

Halfway to the building they were headed for, Shirine stopped him. He froze and when the tiger dropped down, he instinctively shot a hand behind his back for a spear, reflexes born of hunting mountain lions and cave lions attacking with little notice. Only her unexcited tone gave him pause as she addressed the beast.

Taking steady breaths to calm his pounding heart, he tried to look nonthreatening. Reaching out slowly, offering a hand, he smiled and made to brush it against her shoulder. “Beautiful creature. I'll have to get used to having the cats around. I used to have a hound with my troupe, but my only other experience with animals was less than friendly. Too many encounters with big cats in the mountains.” He patted the tiger's neck.

Shirine smiled as Roche patted Niquemiel. The tigger leaned Iinto the pat rubbing her head against him and running off. "Hmm I think she liked you. Though from your reaction it may take you s bit to get comfortable here. There are not onky big cat's here. The twins own. A pair if elks and someone brought a moose. The druid Hearne has severak aninals of his own and tamed some plant creatures called Ivyns.

Though I should warn you to be on gaurd of any Ivyn you see beyond our camp. Mostare fairly dangerous and hostile. Not sure what they are exactly, but they were born in he deep woodsby some corruot druids wanting to prrotect nature from the human farmers on the edge ofcthe forest. Sort of got out of hand. We do get jobs to reduce any Ivyn population from time to time. Ah here we are. This is the guys dorm so I can leave you here. Get some rest and tomorrow you can chose a sparring partner to train with. I wouod recomend my self or the twins for blade practice."

She liistened to see if he had anything more to say and then said good bye heading for her own place.

OOC: If he wants to train with Shirine she will show up at rhe training yard early in the morning. If you chose the twins I can RP them as your training partner(s). Feel tree to make your own NPC if you wish. Or we can end it here up to you.

Roche scratched the tiger behind an ear before she took off, watching the big cat lope gracefully. “Sounds like a circus around here. No worry, as long as everyone has a handle on them. Spent time around animals. A little around big cats when we ran beside another troupe specializing in trained beasts. One lost his grip on a lion. Turns out they aren't too comfortable being around so many people.” He eyed where the cat had vanished off to.

He walked after Shirine and ran a hand over his face. He was exhausted and had a pit in his stomach every time his mind wandered to the dead man's face. Feeling like he was dragging a lead weight around in his breast, he was grateful to arrive at the dorm.

“Thank you, Shirine. For all of this. I'm honored to join the company. Once I've brushed up, I think I'll start in on the bandits around here. Unless you need an extra pair of hands on another job.” He opened the door. “I'm yours for the next few months. I'll see you in the training circle, then.”

The training yard was not too busy in the early morning when Shirine first arrived. She had grabbed a bite to eat for breakfast already, before the cooks had even started serving food in the mess hall. It was a slightly cloudy day. It did not look like rain, but maybe a light sprinkle at some point. She was in a set of tight fitting pants and shirt. It was suitable for working out in. Though she did have to glare at s few men starring at her body. There was always a few in a group this large. Though none acted on their thkughts knowing what the captaij would dk if they did. The unspoken threat generally kept weaker female reqruits safe too. Still she did some stretches and then was doing some practice swings with her sword. Her moveklments were pretty smooth and practiced, though not master level yet.

When she saw Roche comming over she sheathed the sword and put it and the scabered next to a barrel while pulling out a training sword. This one was Katana shaped. She had a few ordered custom for herself as most did not use the style of balde she did. "Ah good mornong grab a training sword and we can get started. You should pribabky warm up a bit too, then we will spare a bit." The training swords were weight wooden swordsm. While not the true weight of a sword they could still do damage. They just were not lethal unless one aiked for say the head. Shirine waited for him get a sword and did some practice swings with the training balde while he warmed up.

Once he was ready she went into a training circle and fell into a standard stance. Her sword held in front and pointed forward towards Roche. "Well lets see what you got." she waited for him to make the first move for now.

Rising from his cot, Roche grimaced at the various aches and pains. His dreams had been full of nightmares, having woken up in a cold sweat once or twice through the night. Thinking back on the previous day's events still bothered him, but no longer held the same grip as it had fresh. The sun had not yet risen, but he could feel the dawn approaching.

He rose and crept quietly out of the barracks, crossing the grounds and ducking out of the gates with a wave at the guards. He took a brief walk in the morning chill, warming up and stretching sore limbs. He got a sweat going and turned for the nearest stream upon smelling his built up grime and blood.

At the stream bank he peeled off his layers of clothing, made easier by leaving most of his equipment back at the barracks. He scrubbed himself off with a spare rag, removing the odors and grime of several days. He even went as far as to untie his hair and comb the dust and dirt out of it in the water. His clothes, washed before he had bathed himself, dried on a branch as the sun began to rise. Slipping on his breeches, he slung a still-damp shirt over his shoulder and brushed off his boots and cleaned his dagger. Properly bathed and woken up, he made his way back through the paths to the camp with the sun as his guide.

Returning to his bunk, he deposited his equipment into the trunk at the foot of his cot. Donning clean clothes and tying his hair back in a knot behind his head, Roche set out to the training circles.

It was still early morning when he arrived, eying those already hard at work. Most were fully absorbed in their weapons skills, but a couple were eying their captain. He shook his head and approached the racks and barrels of training weaponry. She was pretty enough, but he'd had his fill of women for some time and the thought of female companionship was far from his mind, especially with the thought of Brenna hiding at the back of his mind at all times.

Roche selected a wooden broadsword, simple and sturdy. He drew a few glances of his own as he neared the circle with Shirine. There were mutters and whispers, but those quickly faded as their audience watched the two warm up. The last time he'd had a wooden sword was in his fight for freedom against a younger, bigger man with a real blade. This was less crudely made, weight feeling right in his hand.

The feeling brought out old memories of swordplay, of countless hours of drilling and sparring. If he closed his eyes as he went through the motions he could see the blade in his hand. He'd always been much better with the sword than the spear, one of the best in the region. He was quick and precise with his hands and surprisingly light on his feet.

He approached the circle and nodded his head to Shirine in greeting. “I'm rusty, but that should clear off quickly enough.” He smiled and fell into a solid stance, muscle memory filling in the blanks in his mind. Moving with the sword felt like an extension, a comfort beyond plain learned skill.

Stepping in, Roche lashed out, his swing a little slow and sloppy for an opening move, leaving his flank open.
