Shirine moved stealthily through the forest. She was in her hybrid form ready for combat. A group of bandits had been raiding this small town for a while now and they had hired her group to take care of it. She was not the only one though. She was scouting with Lirrak & Luneren the twins to watch for the bandits. Terra Merila was hidden in the brush and was their healer for this mission. The earth genasi was also good with nature magic. Over all this group was above average in skill and certainly beyond the skill of any minor bandit group. Currently they had spread out a little to watch for the soon to be arriving bandits. The direction was usually the same, so they just had to spread out a little and watch for the bandits to arrive. Shirine found a good spot up a tree and settled her self down hidden in the leafy branches. She peered out looking for signs of the bandits arriving. She kept her ears up too listening for any sounds of the bandits maybe coming from a different direction. Her hearing was quite good. Unfortunately her sense of smell wouldn't help too much with the bandits likely coming against the wind. The day was quite nice with the sun filtering through the trees and a light breeze going by. This part of the forest was not too thick so a decent amount of sun shown through. The village it's self was small holding less than one hundred people. They were mostly elves. They were not hunters as many of the trees and plants around them were fruit bearing. In a small clearing the had some grape vines and a very small winery. Still for a small village they made some good alcohols and thus were not as poor as some. It was probably this reason they were targeted. Decent loot and not a huge amount of guards or protection. Well regardless Shirine intended to end this villages particular bandit problem today. Edited by Shirine, Sat Apr 2, 2016 3:41 pm.

Roche brought up the rear of the party as they picked their way through the brush, following a bandit path. It was near invisible, direction marked only by small carvings in the trees. Their group was quiet as they began to near the village. Their path was near the main road leading to and from the village, up and out of sight. Much of it was carefully pruned bushes forming a tunnel. The path was kept clear of dried twigs and roots for quick, silent movement with moss laid down to soften steps. Hunched low, they reached the exit after an hour's walk. The front party was gathered, waiting for their group to catch up before they began the raid. “All right, boys. They have a supply of wine ready to ship out on the next caravan. We're taking the winery. You three take the general supply store after we start.” The large man pointed at Roche and two other next to him. They nodded. The group split off, following paths and making their way near their marks. Roche's companions were veterans of the group, large men who had been with the bandits for years now. It was no accident they went with Roche, a new recruit from the pits. Though he was technically a member of the camp now, Roche couldn't be fully trusted on his first foray. He had been given small jobs around the camp for the last month and a half, cutting firewood and joining the training exercises when he wasn't busy. It had taken some convincing to get the leader to allow him out this soon. Studying his companions, he took notice of how they moved. One of them, the one without a hood, had his head completely shaven from scalp to neck. Even his eyebrows were gone. He walked with a small hitch in his right leg, a leftover from a wolf bite last year. The other had braided his beard, but kept his hair cropped short. He hadn't worked with the man in combat practice and couldn't tell anything from looking at him. Roche had his hood up and long hair bound back in its usual warrior's knot, beard groomed no longer than an inch. The beginning of a scar was visible at his throat where long months of rubbing against an iron slave's collar had left its mark. They reached their destination a few minutes later, the bald man signaling them to stop and pointing out the building they were to hit. They had barely made it in time, the hunting horn sounding mere seconds after their arrival. Bandits burst from the bushes in several groups of three and four, heading straight for their targets. Roche and his companions pressed against the back wall of the general store, catching their breath and listening to the shouts. They crouched below a back window, the bald man pressing a finger to his lips. He knocked on the sill once. Rushed footsteps from inside sounded, the sound of a chopping axe being picked up sounding as they approached. Standing quickly, the bald man grabbed the shop owner's tunic and axe, pulling him out the window and knocking his breath out of him as he hit the ground hard. Keeping a tight hold on his throat, the bald man tossed the axe to the burly bearded man and jerked his head to the back door, keeping a knife on his captive. Roche ducked behind a shed for cover as the man began working at the solid locked door with the axe. |

Shirine was surprised as she heard some movement, but couldn't spot it. It seemed she was a bit late tracking it down and soon bandits were emerging. Shirine had not expected this many, but soon moved towards them. Her eyes glowed purple a bit as she used her feathered step ability to walk through the air and charging a group. She sheathed her Katana with a blinding speed cutting down two in one strike. The other two of the group she target moved to fight her. It wouldn't take long, but the exchange would tie her up for a few minutes. She had targeted one of the last one to emerge so that they could make sure to clean up this group and try and keep themselves from being back stabbed. She noted another group of four was dealing with vines entangling them thanks to Terra. The vines were being manipulated to slowly crawl up and strangle the bandits one at a time. Though casting the magic had revealed her position. Shirine did not worry though she was experienced enough to handle herself. Lirrak & Luneren were already picking off people with well placed arrows. Two dead strait out from arrows to the head. The two killed were close to the what appeared to be the boss of the group. The arrows kept coming though at a rapid pace and the direction shifting as the Twins did not hold still. Their ability to work together was scary as sometimes two arrows would strike the same person simultaneously, from two different directions so as to prevent them from blocking or even dodging easily. Shrine herself waited while fighting the two near her to see what the bandits would do. She had a few tricks and wanted to see which would be most destructive on this group. The down side was that some of the bandits had reached the village and the villagers were at risk of becoming hostages. She hopped they weren't that bad, but then again they probably were. More likely they would be happy to burn the place if it helped them. She hated bandits. One slipped up and her blade cut across his throat. he fell back clutching it and would be dead soon enough. She blocked a blow from the other one before kicking the half dead one away. Well only one bandit in this group left. She smiled as she would soon be chasing the rest. The hunter in her enjoying killing her prey. |

Roche cursed as the screams began. They weren't supposed to slaughter everyone, that was how you got soldiers sent into the woods to wipe you out. The seed of dread changed gears, however, as two arrows shot through the air. One missed his hiding place by inches, but the second shot through the axeman's neck, stuck halfway through. He fell away from the back steps, clutching at the shaft as he bled out. The bald man spat a curse and swung his captive toward the direction the arrows had come from. He shouldered in the much-abused door and pulled the man inside. Holding his breath, Roche sprinted from his spot and dove through the door, hearing another arrow thump into the door as it was kicked shut behind him. “Damn it! They knew we were coming!” The man shoved the shop owner against the wall and readied his knife, advancing on the off-balance elf. “Who is it?” He barked, backhanding the man with the hilt of his dagger. “Rangers?” He asked, punching the man and giving him no time to reply. “Gods damn it, listen to that.” Roche pursed his lips, wincing at each blow on the elf who had no fight in him left but a bloody smile. “You'll never make it alive.” The elf spoke, spitting a bloody globule at the bald man. Wiping the bloody spittle off his cheek, the man brought his knife back point-first to gut him. “No!” Roche shouted, kicking off the floor to tackle the man. “The hell are you doing, Prava?” the man shouted his slave's nickname and punched him in the gut. Roche coughed and grabbed the other man's knife hand, struggling to keep it pinned. He took a forehead to the mouth and tasted blood as his lip split against his teeth. Blood up, Roche dodged back against another swing from his right and grabbed the knife out of his boot, delivering a serpent-quick strike into his side. The knife stuck in his lung, the bald man cursed and spat, gasping. He released his knife and freed his hands, reaching for Roche's throat. Roche beat the man to it, grabbing his opponent's throat first and digging his thumbs in to crush his windpipe. The burlier man caught hold and his vision began to blacken as the blood flow to his brain thinned. For a moment Roche almost lost the struggle, but the shopkeep seemed to have regained a measure of strength enough to give the bandit a boot to the head. The pressure eased and Roche gasped for breath, falling forward onto the unconscious man. He wouldn't be waking up with the blood loss of his knife wound. Roche coughed, spitting his own bloody gob onto the man's forehead. Blood ran down his chin from his lip and he rubbed at his bruising throat. “Thankth.” He spoke through his warm, numbed lips. The shopkeep leaned back against a shelf across from him, giving him a bloody smile of his own. “No problem.” They lay like that for a moment in silence, listening to the cries of his bandit camp being dispatched outside. |

Shirine finished off her bandit and saw the leader dragging a villager and one of his minions into a building. She quickly ran towards the area only to see most of the remaining bandits come at her. She was the most visible threat. About ten she counted and four others being cleaned up by the others. She cut down the lead bandit of the ten. Nine to go. They were sloppy fighters. They moved to surround her. Still she was in a hurry so she pulled out a trick. Dropping her blade her claws glowed with bright moon light energy and soon extended into three foot blades that she slashed across the remaining group. Many tried to block a few slashed at her in retaliation, but the energy bypassed physical objects and armor and cut into them all with pure light energy. One had gotten in a good strike on her side that visibly bled, but it wasn't deep enough to concern her. It would heal soon enough. Most stumbled back as she cut them down with light energy and claws. Several were probably not dead, but they couldn't fight either. They were all dead and she had two more wounds when she entered the hut. Her claws still glowed a bit though her skill was nearly done with. She was covered in the blood. It certainly was intimidating. Though she saw the leader dead and the minion was resting with the villager. Well that was certainly an odd thing. She motioned to the bandit leader, "Care to explain that?" She was smart enough to see that the bandit minion was clearly not trying to fight or be threatening. She was a reasonable person and if the villager vouched for him, he could probably get a second chance. |

Roche leaned forward once his breath returned to him, gripping his dagger and pulling it free. He moved to get out of the way of the pooling blood, but upon seeing the entire right side of his leg was already coated, he let it drop back down. He wiped the blade off and set it down on the floor, unbuckling his baldric and tossing it down next to the dagger between him and the door. Footsteps were approaching. He slowly became aware of a burning pain in his shoulder just before the door opened to reveal a beastly humanoid creature with softly glowing claws. Blood dripped off her in spatters and the villager gasped, beginning to back up before registering she was not one of the bandits. He visibly relaxed. Roche, however, did not. He fished a flask from his pocket and took a swig, the fire running down his throat easing his various aches and pains. It burned like hell on his split lip and he cursed, tossing the emptied flask down atop his dead companion. “Care to explain that?” The woman growled at him, gesturing toward the dead bandit. Roche shrugged, wincing at the pain in his hsoulder. What the hell was that? “He killed him. Saved my life.” The villager said simply, wiping his own bloodied mouth and cut cheek with a rag. Roche began to lace his fingers behind his head, but something brushed his fingertips. He reached and touched the broken shaft of an arrow, nearly blacking out as the touch awakened new levels of pain. “Oh, shit,” He hissed, eyes clenching shut. “Your archer is pretty good. I was moving pretty quickly.” |

Shirine relaxed a little at the villagers words letting the light fade from her claws and feeling moderately tired from the energy she had just used up. It would take a bit to gather that energy again, but from the sound of it the fighting was over. She saw the man moving to surrender and being stopped by an arrow wound. "Hmm... well you did something unexpectedly good for a bandit so just sit there for a bit and relax. Also count yourself lucky. Lirrak & Luneren rarely miss taking down a target. I will get my healer and once you are patched up we can have a chat about why you did what you did." She turned around looking out side and saw her companion coming out. That meant the fight was over and they didn't hear or see any other targets. One or two bandits might have escaped if they were hiding in the woods, but it was unlikely. One had to be very lucky. Still she called out to Terra. "Terra come over here quick. Got a patient for you. One the bandits went traitor and we are going to find out why." Terra came over quickly and was inside. She took out some paste that stun when she spread it around the wound, but soon numbed it a bit. "For the pain and disinfecting it a bit. She then moved to wrench out the broken arrow from Roche and cast a greater heal to seal up his wound before it bled to much. It still probably hurt even with the paste numbing the wound a bit. The heal spell though being quite strong did fix it up completely. Shirine motioned towards a bench that was in the building. She pulled over a stool for herself. "So now why don't you tell me your story. My name is Shirine by the way." She smiled wide her sharp teeth showing a bit. It was just a slight warning that he should try to run. |

Roche just nodded, not trusting himself to speak through the pain. Holding his shoulder without actually touching the arrow, he ground his teeth and removed his cowl and scarf, baring his neck. Unlacing his tunic some, he loosened the collar enough to lift over the arrow. A moan of pain escaped as the cloth jostled the arrow shaft, coming free and lowered to expose the wound. The healer knelt beside him and smeared some paste around the swelling tissue. It was immediately cooler, taking the edge off the pain but leaving a bone-deep ache. When she gripped the arrow, he felt the tip move against his shoulder blade. He shouted in protest as she ripped it out, blood running fresh. All of a sudden, the pain began receding. The healer stepped away. Thinking she was leaving the wound open, he reached to touch at the tugging and twitching of his shoulder, feeling new flesh. There was barely any scarring. Were it not for the blood and the torn shirt, you wouldn't ever know he'd been shot. 'magic' he thought with some wonder. His caravan had an elder who would carve symbols of protection and good luck, but the only real shows of magic he'd seen were some of the wonders in the big cities. He'd even been flown to a flying city once, but that had been the extent of it. Stretching out the fading ache of his brain telling him there was still a gaping wound in his back, he slowly rose from the floor and his head swam a little, light from the blood loss. It was fading as the tingle of magic spread through his body, healing bruises and sores and replenishing his blood. He hadn't felt this good in a long time, if a bit tired. Making his way to the bench, he fell into it with a groan of wood, leaving his weapons on the floor where he'd surrendered them. “Pleasure.” He nodded to her. He felt he should shake her hand or something, but he'd seen those claws and her teeth were giving him pause. “Roche. I'm a bandit. Sort of.” He waved a hand back at the body on the floor. “Used to be, anyway. Came from the mountains, little town half a day off the pass. Was a ranger there for a bit. Joined up with a caravan for a bit of a bonus. Supposed to get them to Norwood safely and return with payment. Bandits hit us on the way there last summer.” he tugged his tunic down to show clearly the dark, banded scar around his neck. “Wore a collar until about a month ago. Physical labor and then the fighting pits. Won free, but they forced me to stay. This was my first foray outside the camp since I was taken last year.” He eyed her condition. “Are you all... like this?” He waved a hand at her up and down, referencing the claws and fur. |

Shirine listened to what he said and her fur bristled a bit hearing about the collar. He was a slave?.... well that changed a lot in her mind. "Well nice to meet you Roche and sorry to hear about you imprisonment. I was a slave of the drow once. Once you are up to it if you want to show or tell us where this group of bandits camped I would be happy to slaughter them all. Slavers deserve nothing less than death... No taking on a full camp would probably take more people..." She took some breaths calming down and transformed into her elven form. Her clothes simple pants and a blouse shifted to fit her form. She thought this might be a friendly form to talk with the man in. She had decided he wasn't a threat. The wardrobe outfit seemed to shrug off the blood only leaving a few splatters on her skin. During the talk most of her wounds were already healed up, only the one in her side was still slightly noticeable. It had been a moderate wound and would need a bit more time. The cut in the cloth near the wound had been large and was also slowing fixing it's self along with the wound. She then spoke again. "Anyways as for your question. No my group does not contain too many of my kind. Currently just me and my mate. Though there is one other, but he is not like us. His form is similar to my hybrid form, but he can not transform. We have several elves and a few other races among my group. Terra is a good example as she is an earth genasi. We are mercenaries by trade. You seem to have a good nature given you defended a stranger. I am willing to give you a chance. If you want you can walk away from this fight and we will lead you to one of the larger towns. Or if you want you can come with me back to my camp and join our group for a bit. Earn our trust and you will be able to get some money, training and some basic equipment." |

Roche watched her bristle at his explanation and grew a bit hesitant. He knew some were outraged at the idea of slavery, but he'd also met a few in his earlier nomadic years who would have been outraged at the idea of a slave having the audacity to run away. He relaxed as she told her own experience of being collared. She was the former. “Can't imagine that ended well, trying to hold someone like yourself. I'd be happy to tell you where they are, but I'd rather as not just put that part of my life behind me. I'm not eager to return. There are none I can call friends there, and I've already settled my own scores when I was unchained.” He shrugged. Her sudden transformation had him staring, tensing at the unnatural shapechange. She was quite pretty, well-built and smooth-skinned, but her mention of a mate and his own memories of Brenna put him off the thought right away. The mention of Terra called his attention back to the genasi. He nodded to her. “Thank you for healing me. I've never been worked on like that before.” He looked back to Shirine. “And thank you for sparing me.” Roche rubbed at the back of his head, giving her a pained look. “I'd really like to get back on the road to my home. I've been gone nearly a year and there's a woman waiting for me. But I don't have any coin for supplies and caravan's won't be headed that way until the passes thaw out a little more. I suppose I'll be stuck here for a little while.” He sighed, slipping his cowl and scarf back on, but left the hood down. “If you don't mind having a green recruit, I'd be honored to help you for a while. I have some basic soldier's training, and I'm a mountain ranger by trade, but my skills are a little rusty in both. Plenty of bare-fisted brawling and I've only been holding a sword again for the last month.” |

Terra nodded simply at his comment, "Just my job. Don't think much about it. Shirine nodded in understanding and smiled, "Ah I understand wanting to leave such thing behind. I also understand wanting to see your woman. My mate is someone I always enjoying seeing again. She is quite a good catch if I do say so myself. Also I am sure we can get you back in shape in no time. We got plenty of people talented with the sword and one guy is good with his fist. I actually wouldn't mind practicing with my fist more. Not really my strong point right now. Not bad, but just not great either. Anyways help me drag this guy out. After that help the others clean up the village a bit if you can. Once we got the bodies piled up the village can handle the rest. I need to go by the village leader and pick up our payment. I will be sure to pass a few coins your way as you helped take out the leader and will be joining us. Just don't expect full pay until your first real job." She got up to start pulling the body out. With Roche's help it wouldn't take too long. The twins had already dragged a few bodies into a pile. It would probably take about twenty minutes to clean up the fight. Shirine did collect the payment passing a few silver coins to Roche. Given the village was well off they had paid in gold and silver. The rest of the group recieved a few gold coins and handful of silver that they stored in pouches. She then joined them in cleaning up the place. |

Roche nodded at that. “I could stand to learn some hand to hand combat that isn't just throwing punches until one or both of you breaks something. As long as you keep your nails trimmed, I'm happy to practice with you.” He stood and stretched, surprised to find all soreness had vanished during their talking and the magic worn away. “Understood and appreciated.” He picked up the bandit's ankles and helped her carry him out to the pile. There wasn't too much damage, surprisingly. He pulled a few arrows and helped pile bodies, including fetching the man from behind the hut where they'd entered. He was thankful the clothes he wore weren't too fine. He could clean them up well enough and patch his pants with what he'd learned from his mother sewing outfits for the troupe. His shirt could be mended, but the bloodstains would make it unwearable. He was nearly drenched in it. He tucked cowl and scarf in his back pocket and stripped off the stained, stiff shirt. Inspecting the various tears and patches so worn you could almost see through them, he mopped his face and arms with the clean parts and discarded it. Roche was fit enough, but his ribs showed and it was obvious he'd been starving not long ago. A couple of coppers out of his pocket bought him a new shirt from the shopkeep he'd saved and he shook hands with the man as he donned it. It was a decent enough fit. He could tailor it to fit him better and the too-short sleeves could be cut and rolled back. Lacing the front and tucking his bandit's mark necklace under it, he was surprised as the man offered him a pack free of charge for the rescue. At that, Roche clapped arms with him and tucked his scarf and cowl away, picking his baldric and knife up and securing each. He unbound his warrior's knot and let his hair fall forward, combing through it with his fingers. There was blood crusted where he'd cut his scalp at some point, but it had been healed and the blood came out easily enough. He sought out Shirine. “Looks like we're cleaned up. Found a few of your people's arrows, figured they might like them back. Arrows are no fun to make new.” |

Shirine nodded taking the arrows in hand. She waved over to the twins who came over. They hadn't really said much and took the arrows silently. They nodded in thanks to Roche. Shirine then spoke while walking out of the village and into the forest. "Well then Roche just follow me and we can head back to camp. Should be take three to four hours to get back there. This was one of our closer jobs really. So any questions or things you want to talk about while we walk?" There was no clear road or official, but most of the camp didn't need one. Most had lived in the area or had just gotten used to the surroundings. For the most part the paths they took were loser to animal trails, where the brush had just been pressed back by a decent amount of travel. It wasn't used often enough to kill most of the plants, but they were pushed down or parted. Given they had company Shirine led the way through the forest choosing some of the easier paths. Over all it probably would not be too hard of a trip. |

Roche followed along gladly, trusting Shirine to lead him on. He hadn't seen the paths they were taking, even given some of the bandit trails he had used on the way out of the camp for their raid. Thinking back on those compared to the ones they used now, the bandits' path must seem glaringly obvious to the trained eye. He walked for a moment in silence, wondering where to start. He didn't have much to ask about his current situation, really. Whatever came next would come. He'd be working until such a time he was prepared to make the journey to the pass either on his own or such a time as the caravans started up again. “I always assumed these woods were largely empty from my travels through in my youth, but it seems there's far more in them than some elves and a bunch of animals. I had no idea there were so many camps and trails off the beaten road. How long have you guys been out here?” He finally asked, seeming to chew over something else even as he finished. “And you mentioned a mate. A she, correct? You sound very fond of her. How did you meet?” He wasn't truly interested enough to make it worth being one of his first questions, but being around other people had added fuel to the smoldering ache that sit in his breast. He missed Brenna fiercely, and even hearing about someone else's love life at this point would be a balm. It had been many months since he's been around anyone even remotely close to being able to hold a healthy relationship. |

Shirine chuckled a bit at the question, "It isn't just a few elves Roche. This is an entire nation here... well closer to city state some say, but still lots of small towns and villages. Plus it is a forest so lots of different things like to live here. There are a few tribes of various types around here too. As for this group well less than a year here. Used to be part of a mercenary guild that was based in Kellen. I got put en-charge of the Taras branch. Well the guild fell apart and I kept my branch going. That kept going for about for couple years. Speaking of Volare, she is my mate, we sort of met while I was there. Oh and she is beautiful.... uh ahem anyways, a weird sort plague swept through the city for day due to some strange fruit. Not sure how, but the fruit transforms people. Well while trying to escape a violent mob of transformed people I sort of ended up with Volare. We ended up going to mercenary office of mine there as it was fortified a bit. Luckily there is some way to reverse the transformation of that fruit or it just wears off or something. Still rode out the entire thing in the office and well Volare joined up. We had several adventures and jobs before we got really close. Not to long ago went through a few things and came out to Norwood for various reasons. Well in the end the adventure lasted a while here and I made thing official with my Volare. Well both of us liked Norwood more and after meeting a druid we sort of set up a camp next to his grove. He helped grow the camp too. Good thing as it would have taken forever to build it the normal way. Been a few months now since it was completed and we all moved in. Oh and the Druid is named Hearne if you ever meet him. He brews the beer for a bar he runs in the camp. Pretty decent stuff. How about you? Tell me about your girl?" She was enjoying the conversation and clearly had lost her self for a moment when thinking about Volare. A slight blush was evidence of that. Still she was interested in what sort of girl their new friend had. Terra looked up hearing the question, "Oh do tell us what she is like?" Edited by Shirine, Sat Apr 2, 2016 10:17 pm.
