[tabs][tab=Flaws]| Flaws |
|---|
| Bad Reputation | Those familiar with her species distrust Sandalwood and her kin. It is rare that a single word she speaks is taken at face value, and suspicion is cast her way at all times; it is no different for her family.
| | Blindness | Although she retains her eyes, natural and untainted, Sandalwood is not possessed of her sight. She believes this to be a divine infliction with which she has been blessed in order to heighten her awareness of the world around her.
| | Daemonophobia | This extreme fear of demons is present in all Crota and is intertwined with their equally extreme hatred of demon-kind.
| | Dark Secret | While knowledge of her species is limited, those familiar with it tend to react poorly to such knowledge. People that Sandalwood or any of her kin are in the company of tend to be distrusted just as much as she and her kin are, and it is not at all unexpected that a disagreement might quickly and with frightening ease erupt into a full-blown conflict. For this reason, it is rare that Sandalwood or her kin reveal what they are in the presence of others.
| | Greedy | What’s a few coins among friends, especially if they’re in Sandalwood’s possession?
| | Intolerance | There are some species that are even worse than the Crota, and among the worst of them are those of demon blood. Like her kin and others of their kind, Sandalwood loathes demon-kind with a passion unrivaled.
| | Qualm | Like others of her species, Sandalwood considers serpents sacred; this broad classification includes snakes, wyrms, wyverns, drakes, and dragons. Half-dragons are respected by them but not considered sacred.
| | Reaction Penalty | Because of their collective reputation as beggars and thieves, Sandalwood and her kin are often shunned by larger communities. | [/tab] [tab=Family]There are six two wagons possessed by Sandalwood’s family, including her own. They are as follows:
The Wagon of Sandalwood, Her Mother, & Her Mother’s Mother The Wagon of Sandalwood’s Four Sisters
Former Wagon Count The Wagon of Sandalwood’s Paternal Grandparents
The Wagon of Sandalwood’s Maternal Grandparents
The Wagon of Sandwalwood’s Parents
The Wagon of Sandalwood’s Older Brother & Her Twin Maternal Great Grandmothers The Wagon of Sandalwood & Her Paternal Great Grandfather The Wagon of Sandalwood’s Sisters
Although the men of Sandalwood’s family are required to drive the wagons, there are currently only five four in her family; as such, Sandalwood’s triplet sisters take turns driving their own wagon.
| Current Family |
|---|
| Father | Coriander of Batala | His name was supposedly a direct blessing from the spirits that inhabit the three sand seas of Istan, each one agreeing with the other two upon the name; this unanimity is considered the reason that he is a master alchemist, whose skills surpass even those of his mother. He is currently imprisoned in Istan City for desertion and will not be released at any time in the foreseeable future.
| | Maternal Grandmother | Amendoim of Balud | Though a gifted harpist, Amendoim of Balud now only plays to honour her deceased husband (also a harpist when he was alive). Amendoim has a decent amount of skill at alchemy; she preferred performing when her husband was alive but no longer has the heart for it except when she honours him at his grave. She currently dwells with her daughter and grand-daughter in a wagon belonging to the latter.
| | Mother | Chira of Balud | A healer from a tribe of Hara, Chira is a gifted healer and a skilled alchemist. Following a series of incidents that no one in her family likes to talk about, Chira and the other members of her family migrated to Balud; her family refuses to acknowledge their origin in Hara. It was in Balud that Chira met her husband. She currently dwells with her mother and daughter in a wagon belonging to the latter.
| | Sister | Peony of Batala | Although younger than Sandalwood, Peony is the oldest of triplets. She has mediocre talent as a seer but is considered by her family to be of one mind with her two identical siblings. She is an expert in tarot readings and palmistry. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two younger identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing. She currently dwells with her two identical sisters and her youngest sister.
| | Sister | Poppy of Batala | The second-eldest of triplets (younger than Peony, older than Pansy), Poppy also has mediocre talent as a seer. Like her two identical siblings, she an expert in tarot readings and palmistry; she is considered of one mind with said identical siblings. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing. She currently dwells with her two identical sisters and her youngest sister.
| | Sister | Pansy of Batala | The youngest of triplets Pansy is considered to be of one mind with her two older identical siblings. Like her two older identical siblings, she is an expert in tarot readings and palmistry. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two older identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing. She currently dwells with her two identical sisters and her youngest sister.
| | Sister | Bagonia of Batala | Bagonia is the youngest of Sandalwood’s siblings. Although she has not been gifted (or does not seem to have been, at least) with “sight beyond the physical”, she has an uncanny talent for picking up and playing almost any instrument. She is still a child, not even having reached her teen years, and yet she is already considered a professional lutist; flautist; clarinetist; harpist; and expert player of several exotic instruments. She has no talent for alchemy at all. Like Sandalwood, she is completely blind. Despite being physically identical to one another, the triplets only barely resemble Bagonia. Bagonia doesn’t really like her older siblings, as they intimidate her and are generally callous toward her. Despite this, she currently dwells in a wagon with her three older sisters. |
Former Familial Roster | Paternal Family |
|---|
Great Grandfather | Yewthorn of Istan |
Greatly respected as a seer, Yewthorn doesn’t get around much anymore; his body is very old, having existed for nearly two centuries. He currently resides within the confines of Sandalwood’s wagon, spending most of his time therein, and Sandalwood often helps him move about. The irony of this is a private joke between them, although it is not lost on others.
Sandalwood’s paternal great-grandfather, Yewthorn of Istan, tragically died during the family’s flight from Istan. The upheaval at the time, caused by political turmoil across Imythess and the war between Istan and the Katai Union, made conscription into the Army of Istan not only plausible, but likely; Sandalwood’s family had thus been acting as sparrowhawks during this time, smuggling people out of Istan that wanted to leave. Unfortunately, it is believed that the stress of the events of that time and the family’s activities contributed to a great deal of the stress upon the old man’s body, which almost always required assistance from Sandalwood to move from one place to another.
Upon his death bed, Yewthorn was weak and extremely pale. He experienced frequent coughing fits that would last for several minutes before Sandalwood was able to calm them. In the end, it was a particularly bad one that took his life. Hiding in a small ravine known as Short-Cliff Valley while the rest of her family continued their work as sparrowhawks, Sandalwood was left as the hostess of her family when they came there to hide and rest; she took care of her grandfather until the end and buried him in that place. However, Yewthorn died and was buried when Sandalwood’s family was away.
Sandalwood was still mourning when she left Short-Cliff Valley to seek her older brother, Balsada of Batala. She did not find him, nor has she met with any of the rest of her family since, though her family did eventually come upon Yewthorn’s grave. They have actively sought Sandalwood since that time while attempting to avoid the Istani forces for fear of conscription, the Katai moving steadily toward Istan City, and the troubles of Imythess as a whole.*
| Grandfather | Ochroma of Batala |
Given one of the old names by his father, Ochroma has only a fraction of the talent at divination that his father has and only moderate skill at the practice of alchemy. However, he is a powerful shaman who communes with the spirits in his wagon more than he communicates with his own family. He often presides over religious ceremonies, since his father (Sandalwood’s great grandfather) no longer can. He currently resides with his wife in a wagon of his own.
| Grandmother | Balsama of Batala |
Balsama is a also a seer; she is more powerful than her husband but not nearly as powerful as her father-in-law. She is a brilliant alchemist as well. She currently resides in the wagon belonging to her husband, Ochroma.
| | Father | Coriander of Batala | His name was supposedly a direct blessing from the spirits that inhabit the three sand seas of Istan, each one agreeing with the other two upon the name; this unanimity is considered the reason that he is a master alchemist, whose skills surpass even those of his mother. Coriander has a wagon of his own that he shares with his wife.
| | Paternal Family Notes | - | During their time apart following the death of Sandalwood’s great-grandfather, all of the men in Sandalwood’s family were captured and forced into conscription by the Army of Istan. The wagons were escorted to Istan City and ordered to remain indefinitely for their own protection. While most of the men in Sandalwood’s family were eventually slain in battle, her father managed to escape only to be recaptured; he is currently imprisoned by Istan City, and given the governmental split following the war against the Katai, he will not be released at any time in the foreseeable future.
Following the news that her husband had been slain, Sandalwood’s paternal grandmother took her own life. |
| Maternal Family |
|---|
Great Grandmother | Cocobolo of Balud |
The most gifted alchemist in Sandalwood’s family, Cocobolo prefers to let others do her work for her because she can barely move anymore. She currently resides in the wagon belonging to Sandalwood’s older brother with younger twin sister, Peltogyne.
Following the events that occurred while Sandalwood and her family were parted, Cocobolo of Balud perished due to the stress of Istan’s actions as a result of their war against the Katai.
| Great Grandmother | Peltogyne of Balud |
Cocobolo’s younger twin sister moves around only a little better than she does, and it is from her that the performers in Sandalwood’s family stem. Although she is a gifted alchemist, much like her older twin sister, Peltogyne is a masterful musician with much experience using more than a dozen different instruments; many of these are considered exotic by those outside Sandalwood’s family. She currently resides with her older twin sister in the wagon belonging to Sandalwood’s older brother.
Following the events that occurred while Sandalwood and her family were parted, including the death of her twin sister as a result of the stress from those events, Peltogyne became severely depressed; she eventually perished as well, presumably from a combination of self-inflicted malnourishment and heartbreak.
| Grandfather | Padauk of Hara |
Padauk is a woodworker and a bard. His favourite instruments are the flute and the fiddle, although he also plays the harp and lute. He is married to Amendoim, Sandalwood’s grandmother on her mother’s side of her family, with whom he shares his wagon.
| | Grandmother | Amendoim of Balud | A harpist like her husband, Amendoim has a decent amount of skill at alchemy but prefers performing. She shares a wagon with her husband.
| | Mother | Chira of Balud | A healer from a tribe of Hara, Chira is a gifted healer and a skilled alchemist. Following a series of incidents that no one in her family likes to talk about, her family migrated to Balud and considers themselves only of Balud. She currently resides in the wagon belonging to her husband (Sandalwood’s father).
| | Maternal Family Notes | - | During their time apart following the death of Sandalwood’s great-grandfather, all of the men in Sandalwood’s family were captured and forced into conscription by the Army of Istan. The wagons were escorted to Istan City and ordered to remain indefinitely for their own protection. Istan’s war against the Katai claimed the life of Sandalwood’s maternal grandfather, and the events that occurred during that war claimed the lives of her maternal great-grandmothers as well, leaving only her mother and maternal grandmother alive. |
| Siblings |
|---|
Brother | Balsada of Batala | [i]Although minimal in nature due to his youth and inexperience, Sandalwood’s older brother is blessed with “sight beyond the physical” - a trait held as well by both his great-grandfather and his grandfather. He is a talented flautist and clarinetist as well, often using his talents for snake-charming performances. He tends his twin great grandmothers in his wagon as needed.
Like the other men in Sandalwood’s family, her brother was conscripted into the Army of Istan by force during their war against the Katai and eventually perished in battle.[/i]
| | Sister | Peony of Batala | Although younger than Sandalwood, Peony is the oldest of triplets. She has mediocre talent as a seer but is considered by her family to be of one mind with her two identical siblings, with whom she shares a wagon; she also shares this wagon with Bagonia, Sandalwood’s youngest sister. She is an expert in tarot readings and palmistry. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two younger identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing.
| | Sister | Poppy of Batala | The second-eldest of triplets (younger than Peony, older than Pansy), Poppy also has mediocre talent as a seer. Like her two identical siblings, she an expert in tarot readings and palmistry; she is considered of one mind with said identical siblings and thus shares a wagon with them. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing. In addition to her two identical siblings, she also shares her wagon with Bagonia (Sandalwood’s youngest sister).
| | Sister | Pansy of Batala | The youngest of triplets Pansy is considered to be of one mind with her two older identical siblings and thus shares a wagon with them; she also shares this wagon with Bagonia, Sandalwood’s youngest sister. Like her two older identical siblings, she is an expert in tarot readings and palmistry. It is said that by focusing her “sight beyond the physical” with that of her two older identical siblings, she can dramatically increase the potency of her blessing.
| | Sister | Bagonia of Batala | Bagonia is the youngest of Sandalwood’s siblings. She currently resides in a wagon belonging to Peony, Poppy, and Pansy; she doesn’t really like them, as they intimidate her and are generally callous toward her. |
Final Notes on Sandalwood’s Family Following the events that occurred during the Army of Istan’s war against the Katai Union, Sandalwood’s family consolidated the possessions of their fallen and sold those wagons that they could no longer support. The bodies of their men were never returned to them, instead burned along with those of the rest of the soldiers in the Army of Istan. Sandalwood’s family was allowed to leave the confines of Istan City only after the war had ended, and they returned to Short-Cliff Valley to bury the bodies and honour the lives of those women among them who had perished because of Istan’s cruelty and the hardships caused by their war. Regardless of who was responsible, Sandalwood’s family holds the now-split government of Istan at fault. When they attempted to confront the leaders of the nationstate and free Sandalwood’s father, as well as seek reparations for their losses, they were forcibly ejected from the city and permanently denied access to it.
They eventually reunited with Sandalwood in Rozanai. Sandalwood and her family are now refugees from Istan, though they journey to Short-Cliff Valley annually to honour their dead.[/tab][/tabs]
