History
As far as she can remember, Hanna grew up in a sect of female-only knights and soldiers known as Battle Maidens. Once she was old enough to start training (about seven or eight), Hanna was put through rigorous and merciless training exercises meant to strengthen her body and her mind; she also practiced with a variety of weapons, though swords and similar blades were her most compatible. Amongst the other trainee girls and older Lady Knights, Hanna quickly rose up as a most prodigious individual, and became the youngest Battle Maiden in the history of the Order at the age of eighteen. Despite her quick learning abilities and general responsiveness and positive integration of the Order's creed and rules, young Hanna was still quite eager to prove herself, and proved herself more reckless than first believed. However, instead of removing her status as a Battle Maiden until she was more ready, the Elite Sisters thought that it was good that she was more human, and less....... not. While they encouraged her to keep better control of herself and her actions, they supported her growth as a person as well.
One year, the aging Headmistress of the Order perished in the night; it was presumed to be a natural cause until someone caught the faint remnants of a liquid-based poison in her bath chambers. Soon after, the ones responsible for the Headmistress' death revealed themselves and proved to be other members of the Order, including a rather ambitious Elite Sister named Isabelle. She gave the other knights the choice to join her in her quest to expand the influence of the Order in violent and unacceptible ways, or die as traitors to the Order. As expected, all the older knights refused, and were cut down by Isabelle and those who had helped her take power. On the other end, the younger knights joined her for various reasons from fear to personal gain. However, devastated by what was happening and unable to accept it, Hanna refused to join Isabelle, who then called for her to be killed.
Of course, many of the knights hesitated in attacking the sister they had looked up to for so many years, and those that did attack did so without fervor. As a result, Hanna managed to escape and started a life as a wandering Knight who refused to take any sort of dirty work.
After a number of years, Hanna ended up accepting a job from a merchant who requested that she join his son on a dangerous expedition. Expecting a young teenage boy, the then twenty-four year old Hanna was surprised to find that the merchant's son was in fact a very handsome young man the same age as her. James, as that was his name, was, of course, quick to lay on the charm throughout their travels together. Unfortunately for him, most of it had no effect on Hanna, who, while impressed with his quick thinking under pressure and in awe of his physical features, also thought he was a bit of an idiot.
It wasn't until a rather dangerous situation came about on their travels that Hanna started to see James in a new, more alluring light. During a night's trip through a wolf infested woodland, the two were ready to set up camp when some unusually large and aggressive wolves attacked. Hanna was able to take on two of them from the front by herself, but her back was vulnerable due to the darkness and unfavorable terrain. Another wolf attempted to attack Hanna from behind, but, instead, was impaled by a dagger that had been deftly thrown by none other than James! After driving the remaining injured wolves off, Hanna expressed her thanks and was quite impressed that James had some surprises of his own.
After this event, the two became closer over time, and this ultimately climaxed in a romantic relationship between the two. The two were married some time after. Hanna was then twenty seven. They soon built and moved into a comfortable home on a plot of forested land a small distance away from a nearby town. It was some time after their marriage that Hanna became pregnant with twins, and it was then that she decided to retire from her work (though she had been contemplating it for quite some time after her relationship with James began). She had grown to like the lifestyle James had, and felt it would be best for her and her unborn children if she were not putting herself in danger all the time.
Once the children came, Hanna spent her days being a doting, though firm mother - making sure that her children were happy, but knew the importance of hard work and responsibility. The physical and emotional stress it took to raise twins both helped her stay in form and happiness and irritated the hell out of her. She was quite content living out her days, growing more mature and slowly older with her family. Days were never boring, though there were certainly a fair share of struggles.
And then, one day, Hanna had realized that time flew by, and her children were already well within their teenage years. Before she knew it, Hanna had become a woman in her forties. She regretted nothing, and knew she had made the right decision for herself. She couldn't help but laugh at herself and imagine what her Sisters from the Order would have thought of her now. It was painful to think back on her past, but it happened naturally.
As if by magic, one of Hanna's sister knights paid her a visit in the night. Of course, the events of that terrible last day in the Order still in her mind, Hanna's first reaction was to draw the nearest kitchen knife she could and brandish it threateningly. However, the Sister Knight swore to Hanna that she came in peace and simply wanted to reconnect. Hanna was still suspicious, but her question as to how she was found were deflected rather skillfully as the ever cautious Hanna soon lost her defensive mindset because she hoped that there was truly someone from her old life that she could still interact with. The two middle aged women went on a walk together to catch up and reminisce.
And then, screams. Loud screams. Screams full of fear and pain and sorrow. And smoke. When she turned back out of fear for her family, Hanna felt a sharp blow to her head and slowly lost consciousness. The sister she had thought she could connect with once more had turned on her. The last words she heard before she blacked out were, "Forgive me, Sister..."
When she awoke, Hanna recovered groggily, and then ran to her home with a panic. When she arrived, the color in her face disappeared when she saw the bodies of her husband and son lifeless and broken. The bodies had, remarkably, survived the fire without being burned beyond recognition. Despite looking, Hanna could not find her daughter, and she knew that the woman she had once considered "Sister" had accomplices, and they had taken the girl. She had thought to go confront the Order at the Ancestral Keep, but she remembered that her "Sister" had said that the Keep was abandoned years ago in favor of a more spacious and grand location.
After burying and mourning her husband and son, Hanna hardened her resolve.
It was time, she told herself. Time to dust off her old equipment. Time to don her armor once more, and hold the sword she had inherited from sisters past. Time..... to show the world what a mother was really capable of and get her daughter back.
