Prerequisites Checklist:
- Who am I? Ozan
- Is this character active, at least a few weeks old and unlikely to be removed in the near future? Born at Night has been chasing and/or running away from princesses for several months now
- Do I have at least 150 gold sitting on this character's account? It's not on this account, but I have tons of gold
Why should you accept this custom PrC concept? It fits Born at Night better than the main-line plant cPrC, Floramancer. And also because Floramancer is hilarious.
This is a plant magic cPrC based around battlefield modification/control. It's meant to be used in battles that are large-scale: numerous enemies, large battlefield area, or both.
Plant Shaper Custom PrC: Born at Night
The environment can be a critical factor in defeat or victory. Plant Shapers capitalize on this by imposing control over the one thing that is common to almost every battlefield: flora. By using plants to build and break apart structures with alarming speed, these mages pose a formidable threat on the battlefield.
The abilities of this cPrC are magical. Prerequisites
<This is where your pricing table will go.>
Level One
- Surculose Perception: Plant root systems tell a story, and you can tap into that information innately. When you touch a plant, even in the heat of combat, you gain an understanding of the topography of the area up to a mile around you. The longer you touch and the more you pay attention, the more detailed information you glean. This ability is most effective when bare skin is used. At Level Three, Surculose Perception also provides information about the position of anyone who is also touching a plant with their bare skin within half a mile of you.
Level Two
- Absolute Undercurrent: By exerting your control over the plants that hold the ground together, you can literally shape the topography of the battlefield. At a broad scale you can uplift the ground to form hills, push the ground downward to make basins, and smooth out more harsh features of the landscape (gulleys, cliffs, etc.) to allow passage. This ability cannot be used at an excessively large scale, nor can it be used at a fine scale. Absolute Undercurrent works more quickly when cast on an area containing many plants. For example, when cast in the middle of a forest an uplift can be so aggressively quick that it knocks people down in the process. Using Absolute Undercurrent is both mana-intensive and physically fatiguing when used many times in quick succession.
- Splinter Galls: You target an area containing plants and cause unassuming galls to bulge from stems and trunks. The smaller the area you target, the more densely these galls will grow. When an enemy approaches within 10 feet of a gall, it will explode into hard, sharp wood fragments after a few seconds. These splinters move at such a speed that they can embed deeply into unprotected flesh. The closer an enemy is to a gall when it explodes, the more damage they take. This ability may be used twice per combat.
Level Three
- Advancing Tangle: You raise a wall of densely interlaced plants that is 5 feet tall and up to 100 feet wide. Thanks to seamless movements from root systems below, the wall begins to slide forward, picking up momentum and speed as it goes. Within a few seconds it is moving fast enough to knock people off their feet and rip into most structures (with the exception of strong fortifications and metal). The Advancing Tangle, while destructible, does not stop for anyone or anything until it reaches its natural stopping point 100 feet ahead. This ability can be used once per combat.
- Krummholz: You create a small stand of short, fast-growing trees that deform toward your enemies with the force of a swung mace. Any opponent that is struck takes blunt damage and may be knocked off-balance. The trees remain after Krummholz is cast, creating a dense patch of obstacles that can also serve as the target for abilities that affect plants. Casting this ability requires a large amount of mana.
Level Four
- Tower of the Redwoods: A whirling storm of fast-growing plant matter bursts from the ground near you. A humongous wooden tower grows ever upward, hardening on the outside and forming a spiral staircase in its hollow center. The Tower of the Redwoods can reach a maximum height of 150 feet, providing excellent visibility of most battlefields at the top. The Tower provides numerous windows, archer slots, and fortified ledges on the way up. Like most large trees, this structure is difficult to set on fire. You may only have one Tower of the Redwoods summoned, but can dismiss your existing one at any time by letting it dessicate and wither back into the ground. Casting this ability requires a large amount of mana.
Level Five
- Creeping Dominion: The air around you grows thick and humid as countless woody vines spring up. They snake across the ground, drape across any standing structures including trees, and strangle enemy structures and vehicles. Movement in this area requires considerable effort. Vine creation is a 50-foot aura around you, so if you move quickly you can spread them thinly across a large area; moving slowly or not at all makes the vines much thicker in a smaller area. Areas inundated by vines provide you with an easy source of detailed Surculose Perception and make the use of Absolute Undercurrent very quick. Vines will move out of the way of allies in order not to impede their movements. At any time, you can destroy an area of vines in order to cast any of your other Plant Shaper abilities in that location -- even abilities that are normally centered on the caster. You do not need to be present in that area in order to cast them; you only need to be touching one of the vines made by this ability. This ability can be used once per combat.

All right, here's another one:
Surculose Perception should specify that it only applies areas where there are plants. In deserts and cities, although neither are completely bereft of plant life, your map should be more incomplete and harder to focus on than in the forest. Similar to Absolute Undercurrent's limitations--you can do it wherever there's plants, but it's plant-based, not dirt-based.
Absolute Undercurrent might even be able to use more of that sort of thing. I'm thinking of cities again--you could probably demolish a whole city block pretty easily and completely with this, if you take the effects at face value. The fluff makes it fairly clear that you can only use it in places where the topography was shaped by plants, but maybe that should be made into a hard rule. Or maybe not. I don't know; this is my second review ever. Regardless, this ability should have a maximum range and maximum (and maybe minimum) area of effect more specific than "excessively large" and "fine"
Splinter Galls should have an approximate of how many galls are created. Possibly a maximum area of effect, too, though it's not as important in this one. Also: can you detonate the galls at will, do they disappear after a certain amount of time, and can they hurt or be triggered by allies?
Advancing Tangle could squish a lot of people in a short period of time, but I mean, what the hell. Sometimes you just need to squish people. An approximate for how difficult it is to cut through the wall would be nice, though. It doesn't hang around after running its course, does it?
Give Creeping Dominion a duration. Those are the only problems I can see with this.

Surclose Perception and Absolute Undercurrent should probably have modifiers expressing their effectiveness relative to the density of vegetation. Neither of these effects would be as pronounced in a city, as Zolero said...but would be wickedly powerful or useful in the forest. Other than that, those abilities are fine as is.
Splinter Galls - definately needs a maximum number of generated galls, or in place of that, a maximum number of times any given foe can activate a gall bomb. Suggestion is 10 total, or maximum of 2 blasts per person.
Advancing Tangle is a murdermachine for seriously multiplayer or NPC army faighting, but on an individual scale its only troubling. I would like to know if the wall remains following completion as well.
A duration for Creeping Dominion is a good idea Would suggest three rounds, as it is not insanely powerful but it IS annoying for an opponent.

Surculose Perception in my opinion doesn't need a change. As it is, it is not very powerful as it only picks up topography at level 1 and at level 3 only those with bare skin contact on plants. Not too many barefoot folk on Imy. I'd suggest vastly improving the range to make this ability better than some others that are less limited in detection. How about...15 miles for topography detection? Less for people detection, and the people detection could be loosened up a bit.
Absolute Undercurrent isn't in need of serious cutbacks beyond making it clear that the more area affected, the more mana intensive the spell becomes. This doesn't mean to make the whole ability mana-intensive since a house-sized rise isn't quite as epic as a hill. Etc.
Splinter Galls needs to be more specific on the maximum size of an area it can affect, clarifications on how much damage it deals, and probably some clarity on how far the needles reach so there's more of an idea of what the ten-foot triggering radius actually means. This is a great ability though so I'm really willing to work through how to improve it.
Advancing tangle is a lot of fun. It has some great uses and honestly it isn't that bad in a PvP context because it gives your opponent a lot of opportunity to play with it. Does the wall stick around afterwards?
Krummholz currently uses a lot of mana for not all that much benefit? I think it could be due for some sort of improvement.
Tower of the Redwoods is great.
Creeping Dominion needs a duration on the slowing effect, but it doesn't need a duration on wide-area casting effect. Technically there aren't any abilities centered on the caster in Plant Shaper other than Creeping Dominion.

- Buffed Surculose Perception while clarifying that it isn't a tool for insta-detecting sneaky people - Vegetation limitations for Absolute Undercurrent, moved the ability to level 4 - Limited Splinter Galls - Krummholz moved to level 2, high mana removed - Wall remains after ability completion and can be affected by abilities that target plants - Duration for Creeping Dominion (3 rounds)
