Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Claire fiddled with the end of her fishing rod, trying to reinforce the tied line at the end with yet another knot. A fish flashed up to the surface to snag a water strider before disappearing into the depths again. Sweat fell from Claire's chin as she finished her line. The little boat rocked as Claire returned to her proper position, baited the line with a bit of meat and then cast back into the water. It was hot. Extremely hot. And the rain hadn't subsided this year. Claire took a moment to pull her top away from her chest and fan herself with the excess cloth. Even a small, shoulderless top with long straps wasn't enough to minimize the heat.

"Adaeze. If you happen to know any spells that can cool a girl down, cast em'. It would be really nice." Claire leaned and looked back at the girl. Her rod shook and Claire jolted. The line came out of the water, revealing half the bait she'd put in. Claire sighed and put it back in. Galea had taken a moment of interest as well, but then her eyes fell and she went back to resting across two heavy roots - with a leg resting between them. Claire didn't know how the big drake could be comfortable, but she supposed it was more than enough. The fishing went on for a while - Claire caught nothing. Guardsman May appeared on the roots beside a startled Galea.

"Claire, bad news. The Murderer-King's group didn't deflect due to the heavy rains and bad roads here. Looks like they are being driven straight into the muck. What a psychopath. Worse news, we've got word of a group of the horde's bandits moving closer from that Marshal who stuck around. Although that one said she was going to break off and get reinforcements, whatever she could. So from here on out, it is up to use to keep an eye on their movements." Claire's line and ears drooped as May spoke.

"The evacuation. That's still ongoing, right?"

"Balefire hasn't promised refugee services adequate for the basin. We've moved many people, but not enough. Too many are holding onto their livelihoods. We've contacted Norwood as well, but they don't have the resources either."

"So we have to strike first before this group gets too close."

"Yes, yes we do. They've taken up residence in Avali Fortress."

"Isn't Avali half filled with water this time of year? It'll be difficult to get them to leave."

"I'm sure you'll figure something out. I'm going to start ranging in the woods with John, we'll pick off the horde's front runners. You take care of this close threat. I'm sure you can do it." May commented. She didn't seem certain. May disappeared off into the trees again. Claire looked to Adaeze.

"Can you stick around and help? I promise not to get you hurt. You can even leave if things look really bad. Just help us a bit more. We don't have anyone left to help us. I don't think they would have sent me to deal with this fort alone otherwise..." The elf slumped forward. "I was really hoping the Murderer-King would go elsewhere. Let's go back to the docks." Claire exchanged her rod for an oar.

"N-no. Sorry. I don't know any." The Chomai girl sat hugging her knees, trying not to look at the edge of the boat as it rocked in the water. She kept stealing glances at the water itself. It was calm. Deceptive. If she fell in, she'd be helpless. It'd be all over. Not that she'd ever admit it to Claire, one of the guardsmen in this town. She'd been living with her for a little while as they prepared for the arrival of the renowned criminal, the Murderer King. Most days were like this, though: humid, flooded, sometimes rainy. Lazy days. Adaeze had given up on her poncho days ago and wore a sleeveless top with short pants and, when it was sunny, a wide-brimmed hat.

Guardsman May arrived and delivered some news. Adaeze listened without saying anything. The situation was getting... tense, for lack of a better word. "Hopeless" was another that Adaeze wasn't willing to admit yet. No relief for potential refugees, no good evacuation plan. They had to strike first and strike well. The contingent of bandits had holed up in a half-flooded fortress, and Claire needed Adaeze's help. The lorekeeper smiled. "No needing to be so earnest. Helping is why I'm here!" She leaned forward to give the guardsman a pat on the shoulder, but the motion rocked the boat so much that she recoiled backward and gripped the seats of the rowboat instead. Heat flooded her cheeks and she looked away, embarrassed. Claire was elegant enough to change the subject to going back to the docks. Adaeze picked up an oar and did what she'd been taught to do.

They drifted through the flooded forest in silence while Galea no doubt followed rootside. The boat passed under arches of roots, lattices, curtains of vines. They passed the oldest tree Adaeze had ever seen, with a trunk so big it would take a couple minutes to walk a circle around it. Ecosystems piled on top of ecosystems. A cacophony of animal noises, from birds to tree-mammals to insects.

Then the ambient noises stopped. Adaeze felt a prickling in the air and turned around to see what was in front of them. The water bubbled upward, strands spiraling all around them. She jumped to her feet, pulled her sword, and stumbled backward in the bed of the boat, almost crashing into Claire from lack of balance. The water peeled back to reveal the tattooed snout of a dragon. Its rack of antlers was moose-like but spikier, moss and algae dangling off each tine and a forest of mushrooms growing on each one. The dragon's beard hung limp and soaked from its chin.

"Chomai Lorekeeper."

"My name is Adaeze!" She was still trembling from an adrenaline rush. "Don't worry, Claire. It's fine."

"You are going to Avali."

"I am. Do you people spy on me?"

"Find it before they do. It is in the hands of the lord who rots away in its depths."

"The fortress is flooded this time of year. And what is 'it'?" The dragon began to sink. "Stop! One of these days you're going to have to tell me something! That's a threat!"

The antler dragon paused, its gaze moving between Adaeze and Claire behind her -- then back to Adaeze. "I'm sorry. You're not ready to know." Then it disappeared beneath the ripples.

Adaeze rowed as fast as she could, but couldn't see a hint of the dragon below the surface. In fact, this area was pretty shallow. Stupid mystical dragons, appearing wherever they wanted to mess with her.

She broke the silence with a groan. "Why do I still do this? Why do I do all these stupid dragon jobs when they treat me so poorly?" Likely a rhetorical question, but being able to say it to Claire helped her vent at least.

The docks were in sight not long after that.
