Ari didn't know how she got to this offering plate. She'd wandered through the crowds for the past few minutes, taking in the sights and smells. The City of Temples, Mandira, a large settlement on the rim of an ancient island caldera, was lit up for the night. Elaborate paper lanterns ringed with ribbons were strung high above the street. The crowds were so dense that Ari constantly bumped shoulders and pressed on waists in order to simply wander around. In the middle of the street was the procession of dancers and musicians that added to the chatter and made the atmosphere truly festive. But once she reached a line of offering plates, she found herself stopping and taking a closer look. They were more like informal shrines than anything: little steps on the side of the road where people could leave offerings like flowers, food, crafts, and other gifts specialized for the recipient. And those recipients were none other than Nalai's various incarnations. These were the physical embodiments of heroes and monsters from local mythology, destined to be reborn into the bodies of normal-seeming Nalaian people every generation. It made Nalaian mythology truly alive. These offering plates weren't a form of worship, but ceremonial veneration -- a way of thanking or placating various incarnations, even ones considered evil or morally ambiguous. She stopped at a plate that really caught her eye. It was loaded with cooked meat dishes that were still warm, beautiful arrows and crossbow bolts that were more a work of art than anything. People had left other small weapons like knives as well as nice-smelling flowers, charms to bring good luck, and handy traps. The priest tending the offering plate was slyly grinning at Ari. He had three dots painted onto his forehead, emulating the three simple eyes between the compound eyes of a praying mantis. "So you came," he said to her in the middle of this thick crowd. The priest was sitting with his legs crossed, holding a baby Nalaian chimera in his arms. The brightly colored snake tail flicked its tongue in Ari's direction. Its fur was spotted like a jaguar. "Do you like it? I prepared the greatest offering for you. A perfect hunt. Heh heh." |

Maurice Delven... had taken the wrong ship. He had originally just wanted to take a boat that would go along the coast and hit a small fishing village in the south, instead he was now on a set of islands out on the sea. He wasn't exactly powerful, but he used his good manners and calm demeanor to slide through the crowd, he treated it like combat training, to move like the wind and flow around everyone. Even if it was still so packed, a light tap here, a small murmur there, and he was out. He ended up stopping next to dancers, their movements were hypnotic, fast, and best of all... extremely flamboyant. He tried to get closer, but a small shove from behind put him in the actual performance, and he knew normally people froze up at this point and tried to get back into the crowd, but he fed off the excitement and attention. He began with roughly copying the movements of the dancers next to him, low spinning movements using his legs, hopping while doing so, finally ending with a hand stand, but Maurice used his hand to send himself into a roll, which quickly turned into a rough spin. His body moved until he finished spinning, standing on his head, the crowd clapped and he now had a headache, next time he would wear a soft hat so the surface beneath him wouldn't be as big of a problem. He stood up and was let out of the little area, this time he stopped when he saw some kinda monk talking to a young lady, and the monk was holding something. Maurice took a few steps forward before the ball of fur and scale sprung out of the man's hands. It tried to run away, but Maurice deftly scooped it up, when he held it up he noticed the snake headed tail and the face of a lion cub. He smiled even as the snake hissed and tried to strike him, but Maurice grabbed the snake head between his thumb and index fingers, he cooed to it and stroked it's fur. The snake head calmed down while the lion cub playfully swatted at his hands. He walked over to the monk and handed him the critter, but Maurice didn't leave afterward, he crouched down so he could use his finger to play with the Chimera kitten, letting the little paws try and swat away his finger as Maurice spoke, "Adorable little Chimera ya got there. Never had any of these back home, just undead critters mostly. So these guys for sale or what? I wouldn't mind getting an adorable sidekick for my travels." |

The priest looked sternly at Maurice. "No, they are not for sale. Give that back to me or I'll call the guards." Ari winced at the mentioning of the Nalai Guard. They weren't anything like normal guardsmen. She didn't want to get tied up with them ever again. Since this guy was one of her supposed followers, Ari attempted damage control in her own roundabout way. "You think I'd be interested in killing monsters, much less baby ones? You do realize I'm asleep, right? I just want to be left alone." He smiled thinly. "You won't be able to resist the hunt I have in store for you. In fact... tell you what, boy. You can keep my pet on one condition: you go with my lady the Mantis here. If you survive, consider it yours." Baring a thin sliver of teeth, the priest chuckled dissonantly. His eyes turned back to Ari. "Scattered throughout this island are large shipments of live chimerae. They are full-grown, starved, and have acquired a taste for human flesh. You must predict when the next shipment will arrive before people start to die." A rough hand around his robe made him trail off. It wasn't because he was scared, but because he was delighted about Ari's stern expression. "How many times must I stress this to your insane cult? Stop forcing me to be a hero. Stop putting innocent people in danger!" She dragged him up by the collar and he seemed as pleased as ever. "Guards! Guards!" Ari turned around and there was one of them: a familiar face. "Jiri. This incarnation cultist is setting up a killing game across Nal'a. I got his full confession and everything." "Yeah, I heard it." Jiri took the priest from Ari's grip. "I'll alert the rest of the Guard. Don't worry about it." Ari turned to Maurice. "Take the animal," she said curtly before turning to leave, shoulders squared and considerably grumpier than before. |

Everything happened so fast, Maurice took the animal back and wondered what exactly had happened, he followed the woman until he had it all straightened out. Apparently there was a cult, who believed she was someone... and they had chimera that they were going to ship out for one reason or another. From the sound of it, they weren't going to be shipped out, they were most likely going to be released in different areas of the city to cause the most pandemonium possible. He held the baby Chimera to his chest and jogged for a few seconds, stopping in front of her, "Whoa, wait. Are you telling me you're just going to let some loony release a bunch of chimera into the city? I mean... a lot of laws prohibit this kinda thing right? So wouldn't he just say that to make you feel like stopping him? If I was a crazy cultist, I would just give an order to release the chimera if they didn't hear any word back from me after a certain point in time." Just after he explained that, screams and the pounding of feet met his ears. He turned to see a chimera, they were as large as horses, tough as well made leather, and as poisonous as any snake. He then realized another idea he would do if he was a crazy cultist... have one nearby to be released upon arrest, give the target no choice but to fight. Maurice closed his eyes and felt the wind... how unfortunate that it was blowing straight towards the chimera. Maurice sighed as he drew his blade, handing the baby chimera to the woman as he spoke, "If you won't fight, hold on to this for a moment." With that done, Maurice charged the rampaging beast, he knew he wasn't strong enough to kill it in one blow, but he was fast on his feet and creative, he would have to counter each blow while staying on the move. The guards were a great distraction, they kept their shields high to block the striking serpent, their spears were being used to keep it from running, and they confused it with pincer attacks. Maurice ran past them though, charging as the chimera reared up, trying to swat him with paws roughly the size of a large frying pan. Maurice gave a shout of joy as he ducked below the sweeping paws, thrusting his sword up, letting the chimera's weight do all the work for him as he went into a short slide, slicing it's stomach open. Maurice came out from behind it and ran back to the woman, taking his baby chimera back, "Okay... maybe the guards could have handled that, but shouldn't you just kill the kooky bastards at their base of operations? I mean... I'll help if it's somewhere int he city... I mean, where else could they get human flesh to feed these things?" |

The chimera pup was surprisingly heavy. It did the secondary job of keeping her there. She had to stand around and watch the fight. Clearly the Nalai Guard and this man had it covered -- it was just one chimera, after all. "You don't remember the story? It happened in your last life." Jiri was restraining the cult priest, but Ari could still hear him speaking in low tones close behind her. "Kirvo was an insane Mantis. Only felt alive when he was killing. He forced the lifeweaver Tania to combine the most dangerous animals on the island and release them all over Nalai so that he might hunt them. You don't remember?" Ari's eyes had glazed over midway through the story's brief retelling. She robotically handed over the chimera pup back to Maurice, barely aware that the monster had been slain. These moments used to be blackouts, but now she retained her memory of what she did and said during them. They were more like instances of altered consciousness nowadays. She pulled her sword and pointed it at the cultist man. "I will see to it that this is a moment of redemption, not perpetuation." He grinned. "Perfect." "I'll inform the Guard of the threat. They'll post eyes all over the island. Increase security on transports, too," Jiri added. "Light a flare as soon as there is an attack somewhere." Ari was busy collecting and stowing away traps offered to the Painted Mantis nearby. She looked to Maurice. "My name is Ari. Come with me. We're going to patrol the roads while we wait for a signal." |

Maurice took the pup back and checked it's gender... turns out it was male, he had to banish all the cutesy female names he had lined up for the pup. He gave the cub to a guard and said, "Keep him safe until I get back, I'll consider the cub a reward for my good deeds and whatnot, that way you guys don't have to pay me for mercenary work." He looked to the cub who pawed at his finger, he scratched the critter's neck as he spoke, "Don't worry little guy... I'll be back for you, can't let you rot here, would be a pity if ya did." The little guy gave a little purr in response, the guard looked nervous, but once he noticed the snake head's fangs were to weak to pierce his skin, he was relieved and gladly took the job of keeping it safe over cleaning up the dead chimera. Maurice followed Ari as he responded, "Yeah, okay... you're Ari, call me Maurice Delven, Knight of the Wind, Kingslayer, also Lord of the Dance. Can never have to many titles ya know?" He put his hand on his blade and followed her. During their patrol he got rather bored, he looked to her and spoke his mind, "I gotta admit, I think it would be easier if you just killed the entire group doing these crazy shenanigans. I could help, I have a history with killing off a political power and undead abominations beyond my understanding, and to be honest, I don't understand much at all. But I do know sometimes to solve a problem... you need to stab it in the heart and cut off it's head when they least expect it. Heh... then again I did that when I had my Holy Sword, tossed that soul sucking talkin' blade into the volcano though. Probably not even destroyed, just stuck at the bottom of the volcano for the rest of eternity." He rarely spoke of the Holy Swords, they were horrible evil abominations that actually stole your soul. When you would wield one, it would slowly erode and devour your soul while giving you all the knowledge, magic, and abilities of it's past wielders... the Four Holy Swords were gone now though, hidden away in four different locations that only Maurice knew of. |

Ari ducked out of the thickest crowds. That was the problem with these dry season festivals: too many damn people. That left them to walk the sparser roads leading out of the City of Temples. She gave him an annoyed look as he went on and on about things she didn't particularly care about, emphasizing that she should simply strike at the heart of the issue. "It's not that simple. They're a fringe religious group hiding all over the place, including being scattered around the jungles. If they had a single base of operations I could track them down and kill them all. But they don't." It was hard to tell in the darkness, but they were walking down a road built along the rim of Nal'a's massive caldera. If any trouble happened on either side of the caldera, they would be able to see. "Now, before we see a flare I want to know more about your capabilities. I especially want to know if you can travel quickly. Don't suppose you, being 'Knight of the Wind,' can fly?" |

Maurice shrugged when she tried to explain how stopping the Cult wasn't the best option, but Maurice mumbled to himself, "Better than dancing to their whims." When she asked if he could travel quickly and verbally prodded his title, Knight of the Wind, Maurice frowned, "I can only run, being a Knight of the Wind is just a fancy title for saying that I have no Lord or King. Oh, but you could also use the title Kingslayer, I did kill my own King and my fiance', the princess of the Kingdom. Had to hide the other Holy Swords from my comrades though, glad I threw those into places where only I could get them. Oh, right getting off topic, no I can't fly or anything special, I can just punch people and swing a sword. Oh, and I can copy those dancers from before." He would have performed a little dance if they didn't need to keep on moving, though if he still had his Holy Sword he could have run as fast as the wind while carrying Ari, but that Sword was long gone. He began to walk backwards so he could look Ari in the eye as he spoke, "So why play these little games with the cults? I would personally hate to dance to their little schemes. Even if attacking them is pointless, maybe you should take a page from my own philosophy, 'Go where the Wind takes me'." The wind shifted, and so did Maurice, turning to follow the wind... and a moment later a flare went off where Maurice was already heading. Maurice was slightly dumbfounded... but this kind of luck happened all the time, whether it was good or bad he couldn't tell, either way, he was the Knight of the Wind... and most unfortunately rush into danger if the wind dictates. |

Ari met Maurice's stare. Usually her face lacked any noticeable expression, but her eyes definitely grew sad when he suggested she not play along with the cult's games. She wanted to tell him that she didn't even know where to begin, that she was almost helpless to face against them alone because they literally knew more about her than she did. They had multiple lives' worth of information to exploit. She only remembered one life: this one. But before she could form an answer, one of the flares went off. One hand propped on her swords, Ari ran after Maurice and was soon leading the way. She was fast, skidding down sharp drops and leaping over tree roots with apparently no fear at all. The village was over a mile downhill. The path leveled off and they burst from the treeline back into the road. Her shortcut -- rather, the one Maurice had accidentally started going on -- saved them precious time. Unfortunately, it still gave the chimerae several minutes to start attacking. A fire had already started near the outskirts of the wall-less town. Ari saw a dark form climbing up the side of a building and, upon reaching the roof, loose a bone-chilling roar into the night. Most people had apparently stayed locked up in their homes, but some had panicked and gone charging toward the roads to flee. An older Nalaian man almost bumped into Ari in his panic, and she followed the path he had taken. A huge chimera was following him. Big teeth, big claws -- easy to tell even in the darkness. Ari took a stand, pulling her crossbow off the strap wrapped around her shoulder. "Make sure people are evacuating. I'll start killing." |

Maurice ended up following Ari, drawing his blade during their mad dash down hill. He ended up tripping, rolling past a few people. He slowed down and controlled his roll, bringing up his sword in a slash, he did it only to be fancy, but the snake tail of the Chimera struck out at him, and his sword went clean through the viper's teeth, creating a scream of pain. When Ari gave the orders he turned away and began sprinting towards a mass of people panicking, "Right, I'm on it." He held the sword out to the side as he ran towards the crowd, shouting at them as he motioned down an alley, "Through here! To big for'em to get ya! Once you're out the other side make a run for the main road! There will be more guards coming! Move move move!" A few people saw and heard him, turning to him as another beast dropped off a roof. Before Maurice could think, he was already moving, pushing a woman aside and thrusting his blade, taking the striking snake in the head. The snake tail went limp as the beast roared. Now they were all running for the alley that Maurice had pointed out. Maurice gave a small half smile to the beast as it readied itself to pounce, his mind racing with 'Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap, how can I kill this thing without help!?' He gave his sword a small flourish and tried to look a lot more competent that he really was, this fight would be a bit chaotic. The creature lunged at him, giving him the chance to charge forward, rolling under it and slashing it's hind leg. He stood back up as the flesh would on the chimera didn't appear the impede it. Maurice gave a nervous chuckle and began to back step as it charged again, swiping claws and biting maw striking out at him. He had gotten only one group of civilians to safety, hopefully Ari was having an easier time. |

Ari was not having an easy time. The chimerae bunched around her, and the only thing going in the warrior's favor was that they weren't pack hunters. She leaped out of the way of gods-knew-how-many simultaneous strikes, running several steps along the side of a house before landing in one of the main roads. Having recovered from crashing into each other, the bigger ones sideswiped buildings in their attempts to get to her. Knowing that this was just the first of many fights slated for tonight, she really didn't want to use her living weapon's special power. It drained her. Focus. The beasts prowled around her, lion and snake heads both waiting for a chance to strike. It was like fighting twice the number of monsters. Your pulse is rather quick, Agorst observed, speaking into her mind for the first time in quite a while. Winded already? "No." Ari broke a huge grin. "This is a lot of fun." That was one of the strangest things I've ever heard you say. I like it. Of course that meant the cult was right about some things, and that fact kind of irritated her. She'd deal with it after this group of chimerae. So far she'd only killed two of them total, and in the process taken out one building as collateral damage. No good. But this group was out in the open. One snake head came at her from behind. Ari pivoted, coming in with a horizontal slash. The head started to wrap around her upper body before her blade severed the hinge of its jaw. It recoiled back, mouth lolling open, as Ari turned to take on the pouncing lion-side of another. She had to dive to get out of the way, but landed in a roll and was fast on her feet again. As she watched the chimera slide along the pavement, she got an idea. "Maurice!" The warrior, standing on the top of a roof, called down to her ally as all kinds of chimerae tried to climb up the building and get to her. She kicked one of them in the snout when it got too close to the top for comfort. "This is a cliffside village! What if we ran them off the mountain somehow?!" |

Maurice was far from skillful when it came to fighting these beasts, his dodging and running seemed more panicked than anything. He was afraid of dying, but not of these crazed beasts, it was the calm and calculating snake heads that gave him worry. A single nip and he'd be done. He heard Ari's shout as he dodged another snake's bite, he yelled back, "I don't even know how to start such a crazy plan!" That moment of distraction was all the lion needed, it struck faster than Maurice had thought it could, scoring a single hit with it's claw. Maurice was glad he had been fast enough to make sure it wasn't much more than a long, but thankfully thin, cut. The three lines on his arm began to bleed... and the scent of blood attracted the attention of the other Chimeras, who left Ari to start stalking Maurice. Maurice wondered for only a moment on why the beasts could smell the blood... the wind had shifted, they were now downwind from him. Which also meant he had to run downwind... towards the beasts. Maurice shouted out, "Wind! Seriously?! Towards the pack of all things!" He set off after his little shout, he seemed a lot more confident now at least, he dodged to the side as a snake struck out, jumping at the sign of a claw slash. He actually landed on the paw and jumped off of it, landing between another two that lunged, smashing into each other as Maurice ran past. Every time they caught up, Maurice used movements not usually taught to humans, he slid beneath, spun around, and even jumped over a number of attacks. The Chimera were getting angry at their agile prey and began dashing after him full bore, their thoughts clouded by instinct, to kill the thing leaking blood, delicious, delicious blood. Maurice was close to the edge, to the point where he had to stop, backing up slowly as he watched their mad dash. He waited for the last moment as they jumped and lunged, trying to reach the treat before the other. With that Maurice hopped backwards, off the cliff edge. He took his blade and slammed it into a rocky crevice, stopping his descent, and allowing him to watch the beasts plummet to their own demise. He looked up and tried for a second to climb... but with his bloodied arm he doubted he could. He began to shout up, "Little help here?" |

The chimerae near the back of the group skidded and dug their claws in as best they could, but they skidded across the moist ground. Ari helped the stragglers along by slashing at their tails and back feet, alarming them enough to tip them over the edge. A noble sacrifice indeed. Maurice's dive had brought the vast majority of this village's chimerae tumbling over the cliff. Only one or two remained, prowling streets now empty of innocents. Ari briefly bowed to the empty air beyond the cliff, hoping the so-called Knight of the Wind's spirit would pass seamlessly onto the next life. Unfortunately she did not have much time to mourn the loss, as she needed to go take care of the last monsters before she could climb back up the ridge and watch for signals. She thought she heard his voice. Something about help. The swordsman tentatively crept to the edge of the dark cliff. The wind tugged at her hair and robe, but wasn't strong enough to push her. Ari looked down and saw Maurice hanging within reach. "Oh. My apologies." After sheathing Agorst she lowered to her knees, reached down and helped pull him up. It took both hands and a lot of effort, but she managed to get him back into safety. "That was... daring. I assumed you had died." |

Once Maurice was helped up, he tore off his sleeve and began to wrap it around his arm, asking for a bit of help, "Yeah, I get it, mind helping for a second, tie this on nice and tight, I don't feel like bleeding for any longer than I have to." He waited for the bandaging to end before looking down at his sword... which began to slide out and fall. He groaned as he put a hand up to cover his face, "I lost my sword... unless I get a replacement I'm not gonna be much help." The wind stirred and shifted, leading him to a patch of overgrown grass. He walked to it and smiled as he found a small altar, one with a rapier on it, set up to be an offering of some sort. The pictures it had on it were of swirling wind and a man wielding a sword. Maurice shrugged and picked up the rapier, switching out sheathes and tossing his old one over the edge of the cliff. He donned his new blade and drew the rapier, he grinned as he pointed to the altar, "Pretty nice place, leaving swords around for the taking. Feels a bit light for my tastes, not a big fan of thrusting weapons, maybe I'll get it reforged, a bit shorter, but thicker. Something better at slashing." He walked up to Ari and thumbed towards the high ground, "So we going back up there or do we follow the Wind?" The wind, as if to mock his stupidity, started to blow up towards the hill. Maurice frowned as he spoke, "Really? The Wind is being so finicky today." With that he began towards the tall hill, trying to find a good place to start walking up it. |

"You can't just take offerings off an altar if you're not, you know, the intended recipient. It's bad luck." Ari's eyes lingered on the image. She didn't even remotely recognize the image of the wind and swordsman, but it was a bit of a coincidence that it matched her companion's whole schtick being the Knight of the Wind. The warrior agreed that it would be best to climb the hill up the caldera rim again so they could scan for more flares. One village down, several more to go. Thankfully, Jiri promised that the Nalai Guard would be able to handle many of the attacks on their own -- likely to the chagrin of the incarnation-cultists who wanted Ari alone to be the one hunting them. Actually, that made her wonder about something. Why hadn't that creepy priest stopped Maurice from helping with this forced hunt? In fact, back then he almost seemed pleased with the arrangement. Following behind the so-called Knight of the Wind, she couldn't help but give him a good look. For a second or two her vision changed. She wasn't following Maurice through heavy jungle brush; she was following him up a barren, rocky hill. The dark sky was filled with smoke, ash and orange embers. Instead of a rapier, the man carried a longsword that radiated so much raw power that it was almost distracting. Then she was back to reality, questioning what was real or what had even happened to her sense of sight. Each passing minute weakened her urge to keep her strange feelings private. Eventually: "Hey. Maurice. You're not from Nalai, right?" It was worth asking. "I feel like I've met you before." I'm glad you're beginning to act on your instincts more, Bethari. You are fundamentally a creature of instinct. It was the first thing her living weapon Agorst had said in her mind in quite a while, and it sent a chill down her spine. She almost regretted asking Maurice anything. |
