| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Shan woke up to the smell of burning food. He tossed his blanket aside, away from the fire, thankfully, and pulled the pot off the fire. He cursed and shook his singed hands before summoning water to drop in the pot, cooling and soaking the pot. "Sorry I guess I am a lousy cook..." "I...yeah, I guess your ancestors never needed to worry about home cooking, heh," Shan joked, then looked away, busying himself with a deep pan. It'd serve while the water did its work. "Hey, it's just something that takes practice and know how. Anyone can learn it. Heck, one of the best cooks I know is a werebear. Has a restaurant in Cascadia. You should stop in sometime, say I sent you." He stirred the oatmeal once more before tapping the sticking lumps on the side of the pan. "That'll take a bit to simmer. Simple but filling." "Umm so what sort of training should we do today?" "Well, the next level...hopefully mastering it will be a huge leap in controlling your natural abilities. You've already shown signs if it, when you, ah, tried to just inspire yourself. However, you weren't trying to cause despair. While other musicians need to learn to amplify the natural ability of music to inspire emotions, you need to learn to channel it." Shan stood, took a deep breath, and began lecturing. "The major emotions this magic can create in others is fear, courage, despair, hope, rage, and joy. Each of them are paired, and each pair is a counter to the other. When positive emotions are used, they help amplify the abilities of those around you. The negative ones degrade them. That can be a problem if you're in a fight with opponents and allies, so keep that in mind, at least for now. Also, you're a bit limited in how often you can use it. I've never managed more than thrice in one day." He breathed in, out, and summoned his violin to his hand. "Again, since you need to learn how to voluntarily change people's emotions, and I don't have to teach you to channel music's natural magic to get those results, we'll try a quick and dirty approach." He brought the fiddle to bear. "I'm going to cast a fear spell. I won't make it very strong. Paralyzing you with fright won't help anyone. What I want you to do is try to counter it by filling your song with joy. After, um, last time, I think it best to work this out before we try negative emotions again." Shan played, but the notes, though simple and upbeat, carried an edge that made the skin crawl and hairs rise. The feeling caused unease, but not enough to send listeners running. "And don't worry about your powers running amuck. If that happens again, I'll cast a silence spell to stop it." |

Chasm nodded eager to try again. She liked the idea of giving joy and hopped this would work better than yesterday. "Yeah that makes sense. I suppose I am ready whenever you are." She waited for Shan to cast the spell. If necessary she waited until after breakfast and such. Still soon enough she heard him cast the spell and felt the fear stating to take hold. However, she had been thinking about how to do this. She still remembered a bit of yesterday before she had lost control. This time she started singing and felt it out. In the end she succeed when she started to think about Shan. He was a source of joy for her and singing while thinking about his kindness was enough for it to work. It probably took a bit for her to get full control and when she finished she probably ended up blushing and being unable to look at Shan for a bit. Her thoughts had been a little embarrassing and she didn't want to lose control and kiss him again like last night. Especially since she had promised him she wouldn't. The best part was something she told Shan while facing away from him, "I ... I actually felt like I could suppress my power for a bit earlier.... you are amazing Shan. You are making a dream come true for me." It truly was amazing as she had never expected to learn any level of control this fast or even at all really. Before Shan she had been thinking it might have been impossible. |

"Hey, I'm just teaching you some Muse tricks," Shan said, turning red. "I bet you'd figure out a lot of this eventually, especially since you're a demon. Demons are immortal, right? Or pretty close. Granted, considering how failed attempts work out, probably best you took a shorter route. Also helps you love singing. Loving the music you make is pretty important." Shan patted his violin for a moment, smiling in reminiscence. "So, yeah, with learning, you can find teachers in the major cities, and most of the larger towns. Fastest way to find them is to go to the bigger bars and find the group who constantly talk about music and look like they live there. Say you enjoy singing like a nightingale, and they should respond positively. Just warn them about the, um, potential side effects of your music first. "Anyway, got a present for you," Shan said, running over to his bag. "It...It's something I give to all my Nightingale students since, well, it's cheap if not free for me to collect..." He dug deeper, his arm shoulder deep in a bag that shouldn't hold that capacity. "And for a Nightingale, which I'm voting you are, they're very useful...ah! Here!" Shan triumphantly pulled out a wooden case, wide but not deep, its cover carved with ivy leaves bordering a bird, a violin, and a baton. He slid the lid open, and retrieved a sheathe of paper written with lines and stylized dots. "Sheet music!" Shan declared, holding it up. "I have a few styles here. You probably want something bright and cheery, or maybe a love song? Folk song? Oh, you need a good pub song, for certain..." Shan dug through the collection, wondering aloud what Chasm might prefer for performance pieces. |

Chasm had to think hard on this decisions she really wanted to have a love song, but she was far to worried about what it would do. She finally made a choice, "No I could have never gotten this far on my own. Plus demons like me aren't immortal. Until a demon has been to the hells and had their soul bound they are mortal as any other being. Though I suppose the life span would be closer to that of an elf than a human..... um right a song... I would love a love song, but I feel like that might end up badly given what I am. As you said something cheery... maybe something about nature and spring? Most of all I just want it to bring a smile to the faces of those who listen. To make people happy is one of my dreams that and finding a person whom I share a true love with... if only it could be you... ack... She blushed hard clearly not having meant to say it, but the offer of a gift had gotten her emotions going again and the words had just escaped. She couldn't even look at him her cheeks a brilliant Crimson. She would timidly take whatever Shan gave for a gift, which she then hugged tightly to herself. It was clear she already treasured it, but was too embarrassed to say anything else. Again she was fighting her own instincts in wanting to make Shan her man already. It was getting even harder and she wondered if she would have to leave soon to keep her promise to him. She definitely didn't want to steal him for this other girl unfairly.... why did these things have to be so hard. Why did she have to feel these thing so intensely. From small glances her desire was starting to show, but it was also clear she was holding back. Edited by Chasm Zelith, Wed Apr 15, 2015 3:49 am.
