Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Chasm looked at Shan unsure of how to deal with this. She then remembered her time with Lamar. She couldn't let herself get this close again. The risk was so great, but here she was with a crush or maybe more.....

She thought fast and came up with one thing that might quell her jealous thoughts for now. She couldn't meat this opponent yet, but as soon as she could she would. "Alright then, but you have to promise to introduce us the first chance you get. You promise yes?

She looked at him with pleading eyes. She probably wasn't giving him a fair chance to say anything but yes, with the way she was looking at him.

If he said yes she smiled at him and said, "Alright I will trust you on that. For now I need to be distracted. I won't let this go farther than it has, at least until I meet her. I just wouldn't be right. So you must train me so hard that I can forget everything in the effort. Keep me from thinking about all this."

If he had agreed to everything and started she smiled so bright it was dazzling. She was happy with even winning a small victory. Plus she was doing the right thing and she was still with Shan..... no don't think about focus on training. In truth trying not to think about it was probably a losing battle.

OOC: Feel free to start second level Melodic Muse training or more unarmed works too. Probably after this next level Shan can leave for a town for a bit. My topic with Ozan will occur and Shan can meet and bring Vivi to meet Chasm or vice versus.

"Alright," Shan said, grinning and trying to crack his knuckles. It failed to create the usual stream of dramtic "pops" as usual. The smile fell as he froze, considering his options. "Um...hmm...I've...never really trained someone when the audience was limited to me. A lot of what I usually use is practical application so...hm...."

He stared up into the canopy, arms on his hips, wondering how to continue when he...wait, it wasn't just him, was it? He whistled and, if he were some other bird, they'd hear the flapping of wings as a tiny saw-whet perched on a branch overhead, bobbing its head slightly to put the two sentients below him into perspective. Shan whispered, holding his hands cupped over his ears, and looked up.

"Hey, Owlcifer. Where's the cricket?"

"Ahhhh...." The saw-whet chirped more than hooted, though the sounds translated in Shan's ears as a reluctance to speak. "He says you're being dumb so he'll go away a while, Prince Shan." Shan sighed. At least the bird was using his name now, though it still thought him a magical eagle owl.

"Oh, uh, okay," Shan said. "Would you mind just, staying and listening?"

The owls feathers ruffled, its large eyes darting about in torn confusion. "Ahhh, I would do anything to serve you, Prince, but..."

"It's okay! She's got that under control, alright? I'm teaching her other music spells now." He glanced back at Chasm, grinning sheepishly. "Um, if you don't mind singing to an owl, that is. They're great listeners, at least."

"What magic? What music, the bird asked, bobbing its head up and down excitedly, spreading its wings out a bit for balance. Shan remembered that, for Chasm, she only understood one side of this conversation, along with the chitters and whirrs of a saw-whet.

"Calm down, Owlcifer," Shan said, laughing. "Um, Chasm? Sorry about that. I know a spell that lets me understand any language, though just one at a time. That's how I know what Owlcifer is saying.

"So um, to the lesson," Shan said, coughing again. "This is might seem counter intuitive considering what we've been doing, and if you want to stop here, I understand. But, really, your siren song is a powerful weapon, and I think you can use it to help people, not just hypnotize them. So this time, we're going to influencing not your own skills, but emotions. Music is already charged with emotion, but Muses learn to harness that innate, though mostly dormant, energy to their own use, making people laugh, cry, filled with purpose or fear, or giving them a light to hold on to, or a spark to make them rage.

"Most times, I'd be having to teach someone how to coax that innate musical magic, the one you began to learn about when you enhanced your own skills, to affect others outside of themselves, transforming it into feelings and emotions. With you, I'm guessing we're mostly going to be teaching you how to fine tune that magic, since you're naturally adept at calling it forth. And to avoid...um...complications, let's start with sadness. Not the usual route, but creating depressed emotions in someone is the most opposite I can think of to your siren song.

"So, first, can you think of a song that makes you sad, either because of the music, the lyrics, or experiences you've had with the song? I mean, I realize you haven't had long to have such experiences, and if you need some suggestions for sad songs, I can help, but most find it helpful to first feel that sadness in themselves as it's born from a melody and reflect it outward in the song. With practice, you can make people weep during jigs and dance to requiems, because you learn how to use the emotion magic itself regardless of the song, but we'll start with a sad song bringing sadness.

"Owlcifer," Shan pointed up to the tree, where the owl puffed up in proudness at being singled out, "will be our test subject. He's smart enough he can understand, but he's actually a pretty good candidate for this because he's not human...or demon," Shan quickly amended. "He's intelligent, but still an owl. He's not moved the way we are by music. You'll need to use magic to make him weep. Owlcifer, is that okay?"

"I can do that, yes!" The owl said, flapping its wings and soaring down to a lower branch to be closer to the two. Its wide face turned to and fro between them, following their conversation like a spirited badminton match.

"He agrees," Shan said, hoping that'd assure Chasm in case she wished to protest. "So, any songs come to mind?"

Chasm could not help but giggle at Shan and his owl. They made a funny pair especialky when he was explain how he could talk to it. She realized her thoughts and eyes were drifting towards Shan again. She quickly tried to rein in her desires and tried to focus on the task.

She tried to think of a sad song and a racial memory came up. One of hercancestorschad masceraded as an opera singer. A particular hauntin aria came to the surface of her mind. A woman lwhom had lost everything to a war and was lost and alone in the forest. The opera it's self centered on this only revealing he woman was actually a ghost. It was not a happy story, but that aria mirriord her own feelings or fears. She did not think for aprival nad just sang.

She found herself getting lost in the music. Her attempt to amplify it was sucessful... maybe too sucessful as it seemed to keep building up. An almost flood of sadness and despair. it wasxmainly aimed towards Owlciefer, but woukd probably start flodding in other directions fairly quickly. If left to finish her own charm would llrobably seep into the music as well making one feel sorry for her, a need to comfort her to take care of her forever. If stopped before finishing the aria, she would simply break down crying seemingly hit by a backlash of emotions.

Regardless after this experiment and any recovery time needed, it was clear that such emotions like sadness were dangerous for her. Confidence, happiness etc controlled and weakened her natual charm. While the opposite made them worse.

Owcifer began to wilt on his perch, sagging down and loosening his grip until only balance kept it upright. Owls couldn't cry, but its wide, trembling eyes looked ready to attempt it. Shan would reach up to place the poor bird on the ground, but the sad song of the siren spread further than the intended target. Shan rocked back and forth, calling his violin to his arms without thought and clutching it tightly. He fought against the feelings stirred, but couldn't stop the tears, and he finally surrendered to the despair, sobbing and collapsing to his knees, swaying from side to side.

He looked up at Chasm, the source of the sadness. Watching her, a growing pang began to cloud his thoughts. He needed to hold her, to help her, assure her everything was well, that he'd always be there for her, no matter what...

This isn't us! his second thoughts shouted, barely being heard through the din of the music. We aren't thinking this! This is magic!

Shan began to crawl toward Chasm, violin still in his arm. He had to reach her, to help her, to be with her....

Dammit! Muse! You need to take over! We have to fight back against this!

Shan trembled in his desperate journey, sitting back, still clutching his violin. He couldn't bring himself to hold it properly, to press the strings to make the chords, to hold the bow. He cold only pluck the four strings, a four note ditty that barely made a dent in the din of the siren song. Slowly, though, the four notes began to grow in sound, and with them came a new feeling, one that stirred and fought against the sadness and hopelessness Chasm's song created. Despite his own power as a Muse, it never overcame the sadness, but the newfound joy did cancel it out, allowing all parties to begin to think and collect themselves.

"Ah...right, so," Shan said, sniffling and rubbing his eyes on his shoulder, still plucking at the strings. "We...we shouldn't do that again, I think. Are you alright, Chasm?" Owlcifer, his movements still jerky, fluttered over beside Chasm, whistling comforts and twisting his head to the side.

Chasm was lost in her own music when Shan managed to cancel it out. She was forced to stop and all that emotion seemed to just swirl inside of her for a bit. She ended up smiling in joy while crying torrents of tears. She was soon curling into a ball as she just felt terrible. The question of if she was alright was fairly obvious as she struggled to regain control of herself. Even with help it took her an hour to calm down and looked exhausted.

To anyone with some knowledge of magic it was probably clear she had some how used a great deal and probably burnt her self out for the day. It occasionally happened especially with young people new to magic. It had likely just turned on her when she couldn't control her own spell breaking..

She spoke a little when it was finally over. She tried to smile normally, but she had smiled too much in the crazy mixed up emotional backlash. "Never doing that again. I think I am going to sleep now.... is that alright?"

It probably wasn't good for her to sleep right away as it was still so early in the day, but it would be a task to keep her awake. Her head was already sinking a little as if she might just pass out any second.

"Wow, it looks like you really did strain yourself," Shan said, wiping away his own tears. "At least...At least come by the fire and sleep, alright?" he said, standing and walking over to her, physically guiding her to the campfire if necessary. "I know it's early, but with how much that pushed you..."

And us, his Second Thoughts said.

"You probably need the rest. And eat, but since I'd need to make us lunch, you might as well nap. I can watch out for us."

Owlcifer hooted. "And, uh, Owlcifer will keep an eye out, too, he says," Shan translated. "So go ahead and sleep, alright?" He didn't know if it was the simple strain of the emotional power she inflicted, or mana fatigue, but both needed time and rest to heal.

If she decided to rest or not, and she looked as though not resting wasn't much of an option for her as her body fought to relax, he cleaned up the oatmeal pot and filled it with water once more with magic. He summoned vegetables, sprigs, and various flower with his food gathering spell, sorted out the roots from the tender leaves, and pulled a cutting board and knife from his bag. He added them to the pot, as well as some cubed salted pork and a few scoops of spices. It wouldn't be the best tasting meat, not compared to fresh, but Shan wasn't much of a hunter, and he didn't want to leave Chasm alone in case she did wake up. He didn't want her to fell abandoned.

And what would a jilted succubus do to us? his paranoia whimpered.

He stirred and watched the meat and vegetables cook and soften as they absorbed the broth. If, by the time it finished cooking, Chasm still hadn't woken because she felt rested or stirred from the smell of dried rosemary, thyme, and garlic, Shan would walk over to where she rested, calling her name softly and, perhaps, chancing shaking her shoulder a little.

Chasm was gratefull for Shaw's help. He was heing so kind again that it made her heart beat fast and ache again. She curled up and passed out near the fire. She was asleep befkre he even finsihed saying he would watch her. She h as d gripped his hand a littld and even in silence it seemed like she was saying she trusted him completely. Her dreams she found was filled with images of Shawn. The dream was good and happy one for her.

She did not awken at the smell of food and even at her name being called, but stirred as he shook her sholder a bit. Still half in her dreams she looked up blearily and saw his face. She reached up and pulled him or herself into a sudden kiss. A fairly pationate one too. As she woke up she quickly pushed away in fear her demonic side tried to suck his soul, but her magic was dry and nothing had happened. She was shocked as she did not know the reason and touched her lips a bit remebering the feeling.

She wanted to do it again, but forced her own emotions down. He had a girl friend right.... she coild not take him from her ....she ended up aplologizing again, "Sorry sorry I didn't mean to....but I uad such a nice dream ....and I could not help Iit you were in it and then I was confused waking up..... it was great ....no I mean sorry...." as she stumbled she blushed until she was a dark red of complete embaressment.

He worked to wake her as gently as possible, and jerked back when she sprung up, her arms shooting out, grabbing his face, pulling his surprised head downward, and gave him the deepest, strongest, most amazing kiss he'd ever received. He remembered Vivi, of course, and he remembered who and what Chasm was, but the pleasure and taste of her made his mind melt into fog, and he found himself pressing back, his self control and restraint vanishing and his mind imagining so much more....

It ended far too soon as far as his id was concerned, as she pushed him away. Shan stared, confused, until reason returned, sloshing his logic and former decisions back into place. He quickly raised his knees to his chest. No need to make this even more awkward for Chasm by sharing just how much that kiss affected him.

She apologized again and again, stating that she still felt confused as to what was dream and reality when she awoke.

"It...ah...It's okay," Shan said, one hand gripping his knees as the other raised to calm her. "It was a mistake, like you said. You were exhausted and just waking up. Of course you'd be a bit off-kilter, and, " He blushed, hugging his knees to his chest as he stared at the ground, "it's not like...it was unpleasant."

"Really!?" This was all she coukd say in reaponse to his last statement. Chasm could not blush any harder, but would have if she could have. She turned head while bitting her lip a little. The temptation clear on hed face. She could not risk looking at him for the moment. If she did, she was fairly sure she would lose control and do something they both might regret latter.

It hurt as she had seen his eyes were clean of magic. He had actually liked the kiss just by its self. It was a mircale alone that her ancestrial magics had not tried to claim his soul. He was unique in that fact. She could not help but think of this as her first pure kiss. There had been others, but had been mared by her own power. She was remembering the kiss already. Oh how much she wished she could do it again.

She needed a distraction.... "Ummm.... could we talk about something.... anything....or can you tell me more about yourself?." Even though she had intended for a distraction, she had ended up asking about Shan. She wanted to know more about him. To get closer... she knew she shouldn't, but she could not help it. She started fidling with her hands akwardly. It was obvious even from looking at her back

Chasm shied away from Shan if he got any closer. She still could not look at him. She could smell the food and a part of hercwould like to eat, but trying to turn around felt much worse then a little hunger. It qoild probanly take quite some time for her to calm down or serious persuassion power to make her turn and face Shan again that evening.

"Heh, about me?" Shan asked with a slight warble. He filled one of the bowls up with soup and stretching forward to place it and a spoon near her. She shied away. He pulled back, leaving the bowl nearby. "I, ah, can't say there's much to say about me you don't know," he said, idly scratching his face. "I mean, I'm a bard. You've seen I can kinda do some magic, especially with music, which I guess is weird.

"Um, I grew up in a small village. Mostly hills and forest with some farmland. Lived with my mom. My dad died when I was pretty young. This is his fiddle, by the way. I kind of remember him playing it, but I was, um, two or three, so those are fuzzy. I left home to become a bard, got better as I went, somehow learned this whole muse thing, and ended up in the forest....

"Um....kind of torn between two beautiful women who could probably both kill me." Shan blushed as he realized what he'd just blurted out, even with the pause.

About time you said something real instead of lying by ommision, his Honesty piped up.

Dammit, Honesty.

Chasm was speechless for several minutes at Shan's last words. Thinking to herself, 'OH my did he just say that. It makes me happy, but why did he have to say it. Oh god I want to kiss him again....' Her finger was tracing her lips slowly remembering the kiss again. She tried to shake her head against the thought. Her heart was beating so fast she thought it might explode. The food was forgoten as she restled with her emotions.

A small voice in her mind then asked a terrible question, 'Why? Why did she have to hold back? It was girlfriend not a wife right? Didn't women fight over men? .... No it was wrong... but she wanted him.....' The voice spoke again almost like convincing herself 'If you kiss him again you might find a way to control yourself. He was unnefected right? Don't you need to find that answer?'

She couldn't stop from speaking now, "I.... I am beautiful.....Oh please don't say those things I am torn so much right now. You weren't touch by my powers when I kissed you. That was miracle alone. A dream of having a normal relationship and with one so handsome, talented and kind. I want to kiss you again so badly..... I know you meant I am physically beautiful....just physically right?... right?"

It was her last hold out against the temptation. As long as it was just physical attraction she could resist the urge. But if he dared to say he liked her for her..... well she wasn't sure what she would do.

"I don't...know?" Shan said, staring downward at spread hands. "I mean, it might just be that. I mean, you are a succubus. You're kind of....born to seduce men, even if you don't want to do so now. It could be just that coming into play, just the way you speak and act and....well....look without thinking. I mean, you're beautiful enough that you can easily wrap any man you want around your finger even without your siren song, and trust me, it's partly because I suspect Vivi might kill me if I'm unfaithful that I don't.... and...I really wish that weren't true.

"Sorry, don't mean to blame anything on you," he interrupted himself, shaking his head. "It's not like it's anything you can change. That's just...how you are. I can't yell at you about it more than I can blame a fish for breathing water. I'll..." He took a deep breath. "I promise to try to...police myself better. I mean, I'd hate to hurt you by just...you know...succumbing to just that."

Chasm was not sure how to interpert the mess. It seemed like he said it might be just her physical body and actions.... but he did not want to hate her. Also he feared his girlfriend if he was unfaithful... which meant he had considered her.......why did things have to be so complicated....... Shan was so kind. Then again she had not known him long was that enoguh for more than just physical atraction. Still she kept from looking at him for a bit longer. She did not want to see him hurt and if she acted on her emtions he might be. It tore her heart for some reason.

She remained silent not moving for ten akward minutes. Unless interuptes she just though and dreged up what little courage she had. Her dscision was an unsual one. She spoke her voice just wavering a bit, "Um I am going to go sleep. I think I lost my appetite. Thanks for being honest, but I think I really am ... I am falling in love with you shan! Tomorrow please teach me more about the Muse as fast as possible. It is the key to controling myself. Also sorry I can not hold back."

She turned and moved up to shan kissing him again. It was not as pationate and she broke away quickly, but it showed her intention. She also was surprised as she had felt something more. Her magic was still recovering, but the tinest of trickles had flown through. No affect to Shan, but it was her first hint to trying to control this power. It gave her courage that maybe she had decided corectly.

"That should hold me until training is done.... I hope..... still as soon as I have control I am going to try .... to try and win you from this Vivi. I ...I won't do it behind her back, but I will try."

She moved to her bed and unintentionally mumbled a few things out loud. Shan might hear or he might not. She did not realize she said anything, "Geeze I sort of wish we were in a culture that allowed multiple partners. Love should not be held back like that...pluz sometimes wives can be friends with each other...."

She then pretended to go to sleep. She pulled a blanket over herself, but in reality she was thinking till almost one in the morning. She could only hope the next day went smoother or at least less akwardly. Little chance of that hapoening, but one could dream.

"Yeah, um, goodnight, then," Shan said, attempting another smile. He stayed by the fire for a time, listening to Chasm's shallow breathing, occupied by his own thoughts as she tried to sleep. He told her the truth. She could have any man or woman she desired with minimal effort. She could hold an entire town under her sway, living as a queen among adoring subjects who'd happily defend her to the death.

And that was the thing. She could, and she didn't! If her beauty only ran along the surface, he could push her away far more easily, but she chose not to live an easy life as a beloved tyrant. She didn't even work as a technically legal bard who earned her livelihood within an hour, or the courtesan to a multitude of wealthy men. And, yet, despite these simple, easy, rewarding routes, she squatted by herself in the woods, self-exiled from any settlement, struggling to control her power so she could sing without fear of harming others, and she possessed that fear.

A superficial beauty, he could ignore with ease. Her soul, though, shone with goodness and innocence even with the long lineage of her ancestral memories wrong doings. She never acted with malice. She might think differently, but her thoughts belonged to her. Her actions showed she meant well, always. Even her desire for him didn't turn violent, at least he hoped it wouldn't turn violent toward Vivi, and he couldn't say that her ardent strides for morality and against her heritage didn't sway him.

He knew he should be true. He knew he should be strong and understanding and hold himself aloof, but she eroded his will with each second. Not through magic, but by just being her, a beautiful, loving, talented woman. Even telling himself that was the lure to take men in didn't help, not in the slightest, and the aspects of his mind descended into cacophonous debate ages ago, each side equally divided and no help at all.

He forced his breaths to be steady, and reached up to touch his lips where she'd kissed him. It'd been so warm and open and inviting, that kiss, somehow chaste and seductive. He shut his eyes, counting his breaths. He could stand strong. He wouldn't do anything wrong...though more and more he wondered just what wrong was.

Eventually he slept, curling up by the fire instead of retreating back to town. The day just felt to exhausting for that walk when he had spare blankets and a campfire right here.

Chasm actually woke ip before Shan for once and decided to rry and make breakfast. This ended terrinly as none of her ancestors knew how to cook. They had others enslaved for that task. Thus Shan probably woke to the smell of burnt food. She had quickly given up, so she had not wasted much. She appologized imediately, "Sorry I guess I am a lousy cook... umm so wjat sort of training should we do today?"

She tried to notcthink about last nights kiss or confession. She had to hold back until shs could properly declair war atainst this Vivi person. Then and only then could she accept tryig to steal the wonderful Shan from her. She hopped Shan would not bring it up. Perhaps just focus on breakfast or training. It was terribly hard not to think how cute heokked as he was waking up.
