Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Atz soon found himself inside the kitchen of the house and face-to-face with Norta's parents. Her mother initially declared their appearance to be acceptable. Norta's father then gave Atz a good hard pat on the back, which was hard enough that he let it push him forward a bit but that did not actually hurt him. Of course, he did not react to the blow.

He said, "I actually come from the land to the far south of Imythess, so I really wasn't in a position to keep up with current events, expecially those that occured to the north. However, I can say that Istan, alongside some other powers, sent a fairly ambitious expedition to the land to the south of the desert. From what I heard, though, the people living there started fighting back, and some of the Istanis have been fleeing back across the desert. Can't exactly blame the people whose land was being invaded. I'm from that area, but my tribe is isolated enough that we haven't been affected by this so far. Most of what I know I heard from the airship captain who brought me to Imythess."

Atz made his way to the fireplace while he talked, and once he made it there, he sat down in one of the nearby chairs. He didn't keep talking for the moment but waited for the man--or possibly someone else--to start talking.

Norta listened to her father and Atzolek talk news while she picked the tangles from her wet hair. Atz shared his bit, then her father started in on his news:

"Ach, aye, well, tis understandable," her father drained his ale in a gulp and set the mug on the mantle. "There was talk o'us takin' to arms when the White Quinn started in on Striberg. We dinna really think she'd get this far, ye ken, an' our childen went up thataway t'make sure she didn't, but ye canna help preparin' in a time like that."

From there, he launched into a colorful description of the War with the White Queen. From there, he pulled even fuller back, to the Forgotten Harvest and the merchants and lords who thought to move in a take over - taking land and harvests across the Plains.

He also mention, glossed over really, pirates in a flying ship that had been spotting in and around the area.

"Aye - their captain is a madman - name o'Tarien. Said he depopulated t'village of Downer's Grove o'er a fortnight's ride from here. Sold 'em to a slaver in Istan."

"Pa," Norta said disapprovingly, "he did nae such thing. He depopulated a tavern full o'mercenaries that were no better than they should be."

"An' how'd ye ken such a thing?" her father retorted.

"Mari from Downer's Grove was visitin' her sister just a month ago an' she told me all about it." Norta ran the comb through her hair again. By this time she'd gotten it so it gleamed like copper in the firelight.

"Dinna yer ma need help in wit t'work? We canna celebrate witout everythin' bein' done."

Norta smiled and tucked the comb in her pocket. "Aye. Shouldn't t'lads an' lasses be bringin' t'flocks home?"

Grumbling, her father left to make sure that the shepherds had gotten their sheep into the pens to his exacting standards.

"Take me father's words wit a grain o'salt," she said, rising. "He's on o'those men who each tale grows in t'tellin' o'it." She picked up her father's empty mug. "T'ale to yer likin'? It's me own special brew."

Atz had talked with Linesi about some of the things Norta's father was talking to him about, so he was getting the idea that his stories were as much embellishment as fact. The way Norta contradicted him on a point of fact also gave him that impression.

He replied to Norta, "I was starting to get that impression. I happen to have heard another version of some of the stories he was telling, particularly about the business with the White Queen."

Atz hadn't drank a lot of his ale, but he'd had enough to give an opinion on it. He'd been used to different types of alcohol where he came from, mainly elven wines. He'd also had the chance to try some different things during the voyage to Imythess. He'd liked most of it, but his preference was still wines, though he wasn't particular on the type. This ale tasted pretty good as far as ales went, and he definitely did enjoy drinking it.

He smiled at her and said, "It's good. You did a good job of making it."

"Thank ye. Tis an ole family recipe, our brew."

"NORTA!" a female adolescent's voice shrieked from across the kitchen. "Ye dinna bin out adventurin' again?! An' what's t'ken about t'Wolf?"

Norta sighed and turned back to the door. The shepherds were coming back - her brother Orlo, who'd she'd left out in the fields what seemed like ages ago, was right behind a lanky girl in leggings who shouted for her - Gwyn had a voice that could carry over three hilltops - Coran squirmed in between to them to sprint across the kitchen and practically bury himself in her skirt, as if to claim the story he desperately wanted to hear for himself. That seemed to be the break in the doorway and people flooded in.

With the shepherds back, work for a celebration began in earnest. Supplies and wine were brought from storage, messages were dispatched to neighbors, foodstuffs were made, baking space in ovens quickly filled and spots in the fireplace did too. Outside a huge bonfire was being built and in the main hall of the Kellcarin house - which could be easily seen from the kitchen - tables were being moved and benches taken down.

Atz and Norta were quickly herded into various tasks, first with little things like, "Can ye hold this, luv?" and "Reach ta'jar down fer me, dear?" and then they were just sort of absorbed into the general scheme of work to be assigned. Everyone seemed to be working at cross purposes and shouting while they did it.

Eventually, the noise started to deafen even Norta, who was used to it. She finally disentangled herself long enough to go find Atzolek.

"Come on," she said, dragging him away from his task, "I figgred ye deserve a bit o'break."

They slipped outside and Norta led him to a the barn, where there wasn't a million people, and they could sit down without being asked to do anything.

Atz soon managed to get himself dragged into helping with the preparations for the evening. Initially, he was asked to get a few items that were hard to reach for shorter people, but shortly afterward, he was recruited by the crew that was getting tables out and setting them up. He did a certain amount of showing off his exceptional strength, picking up tables by himself and carrying them to where they were supposed to go, where the rest of the group was carrying them two men to a table (though technically one of the stronger men might have been able to pick one up himself).

Atz had just set down a table when Norta came by and started pulling him away. She brought him away from the craziness and off to the barn where they were away from the others. Once there, he smiled at her and said, "I don't mind helping, but I can also enjoy some time away from it all with you. So, was there anything you wanted to talk about?"

"Not a bless'd thing," Norta said, sitting down a bench near the barn door. "I jest wanted tae sit down fer a bit - since climbin' and hikin' and flyin' hither an yon takes it outta ye. And I figgure since I ken use a bit o'a sit down, so can he, whose been doin' twice the legwork o' me."

She patted the bench next to her with a smile.

Apparently, Norta was just interested in getting away from the craziness, and though she hadn't said as much, it seemed like part of her reason for bringing him here was to spend some time with him. He wasn't exactly going to complain about that, though.

Atz smiled back at her and sat beside her, sitting fairly close to her, but not too close. He asked, "How often does your family host things like this?"

"Every chance they canna get," Norta replied. "Winter's be a fair grim time fer us here. We try t'lighten t'spirit o't'place, ye ken?" Her face looked blank for a moment, as if remembering some grim time, "I dinna ken what ye come from, but fer farmers, herders, an ' sailors Winter be a dark time fer us."

Atzolek had sat down next to her...but not particularly close. She closed the gap, inching next to him, until their hips were touching.

"Let's talk about summat happier," she said, hoping he'd take up the thread of the conversation.

Atz hadn't really been intending to bring up an unpleasant topic, as he'd figured that things like this were usually considered to be pleasant, but it was Norta's association between it and the unpleasantness of winter that made it unpleasant for her. Regardless, it was just as well to bring up a different line of conversation.

He thought for a moment and then realized that he really didn't know what he would be getting into once the actual event got underway. He really didn't even know what these things involved, aside from plenty of food and more than enough alcohol.

He asked, "What can I expect once this...feast gets started? Will I be expected to do anything?"

Of course, he was pretty much expecting to be asked to tell his story--quite possibly more than once. The other things that crossed his mind were singing, dancing, and drinking contests, though of course, there could very well be something he was completely not expecting.

"Nae - jest sit there an' smile," Norta leaned up against him. "Me kin'll do most o'the talkin'. We be great talkers, the Kellcarins - summat I'm surprised that we dinna create mare bards than me brather." She stretched. "Ye'll hafta dance. Tis bad luck fer a guest t'nae dance at these." She looked up at him with sparkling eyes. "Ye can dance, can ye?"

Then she twisted herself quickly and, before he could shove her away, planted a kiss on his lips. It was not a sweet sisterly kiss either. It was definitely the other kind.

"That's says I get ye later, if yer minded," she winked. "Dinna want another girl stealin' ye."

Apparently, he wasn't really expected to talk much, but he was expected to dance. He smiled at her and responded, "I do know how to dance. I don't know a lot of different dances, but the captain of the airship that brought me here saw to it that I knew enough to get onto a dance floor."

He expected Norta to reply, but he then felt her moving beside him, and before he could react, her lips were pressing into his in a kiss that definitely meant that she wanted him to be hers tonight. She confirmed this with words, and Atzolek was unsure how to reply. Rather than try to say anything, he responded by leaning toward her and kissing her back.

That was the kind of response Norta liked to get. She wrapped her armed around Atzolek's neck and was really enjoying herself until...

"Aunt Norta?" she heard a voice calling. She broke the kiss and sighed.

"I luv me clan," she muttered with exasperation, "I luv me clan, I luv me clan..."

"Aunt Norta?"

"Down here, luv," she called back, untangling herself from Atzolek.

One of her innumerable nieces came around the corner of the barn. "They started t'bonfire on t'hill an' t'neighbors have shewed up an' granther be lookin' fer ye and the winged man," the little girl said, almost all in one breath.

"O' course he is," Norta said primly. "Run yonder, we be comin'." The girl took off around the corner.

"Eventually," Norta added under her breath.

Without quite meaning to, the two of them started kissing, but it was soon stopped by one of the dozens of children running around looking for them. Norta seemed exasperated by the child who wouldn't leave them alone. It turned out to be someone who was indeed looking for them, apparently one of her nieces. Of course, someone was looking for them. They should have known that their time alone wouldn't last long.

Norta successfully got the child to run off by saying that they were on their way. He didn't miss the way she added the word 'Eventually' under her breath.

He looked at her and said softly, "Maybe I should just fly off with you for a few days?" He winked at her and kissed her again. Regardless of whether she answered that question, he picked her up like she hardly weighed anything. He smiled and said, "Perhaps we should head over to that bonfire. Now what would your relatives think of me carrying you there?"

Norta laughed. "We'd be t'talk o't'whole night, an' me kin would have great fun keepin' us from sneakin' off til dawn." She kissed his cheek. "An' we'd both hafta break skulls - t'ere are tae many local lads who nae keen on a rover "stealin'" a local lass. Summat might take that t'ye and summat might take it t'me. Either way they'd end wit' bloody noses and black eyes. I gae where I please." She tried to squirm out of his arms.

A fiddled started playing faintly from the hill that looked down on the farm. A flute joined it and then a bodhran drum in a general warm up - one of those dance tunes that started slow and built to a whirling speed.

"Us bein' late is nae gonna help either," Norta observed.

Apparently, if they were visibly together, the rest of her clan would have issues with it, between trying to keep them from sneak off and not wanting an outsider taking one of the local girls. Part of Atzolek thought it would be fun to carry her there anyways and see what happened, but another part thought that this was all going just a bit too fast. In the end, he decided to let her make the decision.

Since Norta seemed to want him to set her down, he did just that, setting her gently onto her feet. He then said, "If you want them to see us together, I'm fine with it, but I'm not going to make you do anything. It's up to you." With that, he gave her a smile.

Atz knew that there was a chance that the other girls of the clan would want him to dance with them. He figured that his decision on that would depend on whether she wanted to be with him for the evening. However, regardless of that decision, he likely wouldn't dance with her exclusively unless he had a good reason to.
