Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The man looked over his shoulder as he ran. His fine clothing stained with blood from numerous small wounds This should not be happening, not in his mansion, his seat of power, the safest place in the city he could possibly be... Yet, clearly it was happening, hi- He tripped, sprawling over the body of one of his guards. Stumbling to his feet, breath coming in ragged gasps, he continued down the corridor. That room with the secret passage had to be around here some- Aha, there it was. Turning quickly, he flung open the door, turned around, and locked it.

Just in time to realize... Flames, everywhere. The passage was obviously caved in and the room was starting to catch fire. Fumbling for the lock again, he found himself blown off his feet as the doors were blasted inwards, his head practically exploded in pain as the door smashed into it.

"You did not think you would escape me that easily, did you?" A masked man stood watching impassively as he lifted that damned sword, covered in blood, HIS blood, with casual deftness. Wreathed in shadows, it was hard to make out his form, though the light from the fire illuminated it somewhat better.

"What do you want? Money? Power? Wealth? WHAT!?" The nobleman, lying on the ground shouted, holding up a hand in defensive supplication.

The man shook his head, not deigning to answer as he drew the blade backwards, and swung.

The last thing he ever saw, were his eyes, staring into his own from behind the mask. Those bright. Crimson. Eyes. Such a shame they were the result of an illusion as opposed to real ones really.

Miriel sat on a rooftop, watching the people below her go about their business as she simply relaxed. Smiling slightly, she gave a slight whistle, and an ethereal bluebird faded into view, hovering over her shoulder. "Take this to Either Eko, or, in the event of her being unreachable, one of her people capable of taking it to her." The letter she handed over to the creature was a simple hello, inquiring after Eko's health, if she would like to... "catch up" at some point, assuming she had the time, and detailing the rooftops location, and the inn the mercenary had rented a room within, as both acceptable places to get a hold of her, if she so desired though the rooftop only for a few hours.

The bluebird was of course, perfectly capable of finding anyone. ...as long as they were above ground and out of a building. Part of the reason Miriel had included the contingency regarding Eko's subordinates. No need to wait weeks for it to get delivered just because of sheer chance such as Eko laying low or getting sick. Stupid things would wait years if need be.

Shaking her head, she layed back as the bird took the letter before dashing off, and waited, though she kept a wary eye out, keeping her guard up as best she could.

This was truly a war. Over the course of defending on multiple fronts, Eko managed to hold onto most of her properties. She had fought back one of the Foxes of Lady Nochesce during the Battle of Chimaera Street. When Lord Kelok placed deadly sanctions on her faction's movements, she had him shot to death from her own territory -- half a mile away -- culminating from over a month of careful planning. But every time she avoided drowning, the situation only became more complex. For example, the ex-Keloken had shattered into a thousand factions, it seemed. The largest group, people who had only been under Kelok's employ through various forms of coercion, joined under Eko's growing umbrella of power.

Then there were the ambitious types: people who wanted to fill the power vacuum he left. Indeed, the old genasi-mutt had held sizeable pieces of the city, and Eko couldn't secure them all without overextending her forces. She focused on claiming his holdings that were closest to the Western Quarter: little patchy extensions into the north, center and south, including Kelok Manor itself, which she had promptly demolished to make a statement. That still left huge pieces unclaimed, giving several annoying upstarts their big break. One of Kelok's strategists, Marco Robles, had the most success in this cleanup endeavor. He kept requesting an audience with Eko. Wanted an alliance, claimed to have never been loyal to the late Lord. All lies. She knew full well he wanted revenge. If he could kill her, he could restabilize all of Lord Kelok's holdings in one fell swoop -- and, if stories she heard were true, install an even more brutal and expansionist regime there.

But just last night, Robles was attacked in his own mansion, killed, and the property burned to the ground. It was the most convenient thing that had happened to Eko since this whole war started. With that death, Lord Kelok's legacy was finished. None of his other ilk would ever pose a threat. She could focus all her energy on her other enemies, particularly the most powerful among them: Lady Nochesce. Eko was taking steps forward.

She wondered who the mysterious assassin was.

"Eko?" Mohdu asked. Ah, she shouldn't call him Mohdu -- that wasn't his real name, it turned out. But calling him Rhett felt wrong. She snapped out of her daydreaming and placed her empty wine glass on the counter. The new bartop was smooth, nice, made of mottled granite. The renovations to her headquarters were almost complete by now. "I hate to bother you when you're deep in thought, but there's a bird pecking on the window." He gestured behind her.

A bluebird, of all things, sat perched on the windowsill. It was slightly transparent and trailed ethereal mist. Spectral birds were popular messengers in the city of darkness, but she'd never seen a cute bluebird type before. Eko got down from her barstool and wandered outside to accept the delivery. Only when she came in did she open it. Mohdu -- Rhett -- watched her reaction carefully. It didn't change. She was very quiet. "I have to go," she said, and hurried out.

The shadows of the city clung to her boots, tendrils caressing without her really even noticing. All she had noticed recently was her ability to surprise people by simply walking up to them. Eko had developed the habit of subtly announcing her presence to let people know she was behind them, or to the side of them, or anywhere that wasn't immediately in front of them. But right now, she was so excited that she forgot to do this. She pulled herself up to the rooftop. Miriel was on the other side. Hadn't changed much. Eko had. She was clean and well-dressed, wearing a warm fitted jacket with a collar lined in short crimson fur. She looked strong and healthy instead of half-starved, though still waifish. Still, the dark circles under her eyes hinted at the toll this war was taking on her. The dullness in her eyes further suggested she didn't sleep much, or often forgot to sleep.

"Eko."

Miriel leaned back, relaxing slightly as Eko announced herself, though the silence of her step was somewhat surprising. Apparently the girl had improved in more than just her health since the Avariel saw her last.

"You seem well." Miriel glanced at her.. friend? out of the corner of her eye, taking in the finer clothing and shadowed eyes both as she approached. "Though from what I have been able to discern. Rather busy as well. You should probably try to get more rest. You seem rather tired." She gently scolded, letting a nearly full smile grace her features, almost, but not quite, reaching her eyes.

Turning back towards the street once more, her eyes momentarily glazed over before refocusing, brow momentarily twitching in irritation directed elsewhere. Turning back towards Eko, she frowned slightly "Not that I always follow my own advice regarding such things."

"Too many dreams and nightmares both."

Eko forced a thin, polite smile that only made her look more tired. "Always been concerned about my health... no need. I wouldn't do anything to endanger my allies." Like sleeping so much that her enemies would profit from the lapse and attack. Eko was always alert. "Mind if we take this conversation somewhere private? I'd like to catch up with you." An affirmation would lead them silently west, toward one of her business holdings that doubled as a safehouse. Ansha, Eko's dog, met up with them halfway through the trip and was quick to enthusiastically greet Miriel as soon as they both were standing at ground level.

As she approached their destination, Eko realized the place was probably familiar to Miriel. It was Foxhounds Blacksmith, the headquarters of one of her old business enemies, Berach Okkeren. Miriel had helped trap and annihilate Okkeren and his whole alliance, in the process securing several properties whose revenue was necessary to fund later power expansions. In a way, Eko owed a lot of her current status to Miriel's volunteered help. She wanted to express her appreciation but wasn't sure how best to go about it.

Furnaces burned in the outdoor section of the smithy, helping heat the inside storefront. A mixture of species, mainly goblins, were hard at work forging weapons and armor used by Eko's forces. They greeted Eko hurriedly but politely, respecting her need for distance at the moment. She led her friend upstairs to a well-furnished lounge that, if the locks on the door were anything to go by, composed the "safehouse" portion of the building. The living area was packed with supplies like non-perishable food and hospital cots, but none of it was in the way of the furniture. Eko took a seat on a couch, letting out a comfortable sigh. Then her pale eyes turned to Miriel. "Sorry about that. I have concerns with security. What brings you back to Balefire? Life been too boring?"

"Certainly. If you wish." Miriel understood Eko's need for greater security, really she had been relatively surprised that she had been greeted personally rather than a messenger, Eko certainly had the resources for such even if the spectral bird had not bothered staying long enough to get a reply. She followed Eko readily enough, until they arrived at their destination. If she recognized the location, she showed no outward signs of it though, simply walking through the door and up the stairs to the... safe-room?

Still, she supposed Eko HAD gotten a slight bit of breathing room with the ever so fortuitous death of lord Robles. Lovely coincidence that had been, one of Eko's enemies dying in the ruins of his burning mansion. And even if Balefire was always in a state of perpetual gloom, a little bit of time outdoors was probably a good thing for the girl.

"Boring?" Miriel raised an eyebrow, her near perpetual frown rising into a more neutral expression that Eko would probably be able to interpret as a slight smile, considering her skill at reading people. The elf sat on a chair facing slightly towards the couch Eko was sitting on. "Hardly, for the past month or two it seems I cannot walk twenty miles without running into demons, bandits, demon bandits, wizards with delusions of grandeur, a town haunted by a malevolent ghost, some village under attack by a giant, or a weird... shapeshifting transparent-skinned water thing with acid blood and regenerative capabilities surpassing a trolls that just so happened to be wandering about in the middle of the forest a mere hour after I decide to leave the road*... The past few weeks have been so utterly insane that Balefire might be downright relaxing right now." Her tone was a mixture of exasperation and genuine relief at arriving in balefire of all places.

That last example was not only real, but it had actually managed to injure her a good bit before she finally discovered that it could not regenerate damaged parts of its body, only create new from COMPLETELY destroyed old tissue. At that point she had gone a tad overboard with the lightning, but it was well deserved. If the mercenary ever figured out who had unleashed that creature into the material plane.... There was no way it was native.

"At this rate my hair will go whi- ...well. Black. I think that would be how it should work for me considering my natural hair color."

"That said, I wanted to check up and see how you were doing. Apparently quite well, from what I have heard, discounting a few bumps in the road. I have very few people I would call my friend, and I prefer to actually talk to them occasionally. When I can. I do hope my arrival was not at a bad time..."

Eko propped her chin up with her hand, leaning her elbow on the armrest of her chair. Miriel was a full-blown adventurer, and it was good to hear that she hadn't had a dull moment in the time she'd been abroad. "Nothing you can't handle." Though the water monster seemed a bit odd. When the woman asked if the upstart had been doing well, the tips of Eko's lips pressed up just slightly to mirror Miriel's own expression. "Yes. As well as it can. I fight a war on many fronts, against multiple enemies, some of which are Lords. They resist any upstart whose power makes them a serious shoe-in for joining their ranks. I recently killed a Lord of Balefire... and the power vacuum was destroyed right before my eyes. I'm beginning to suspect the crimson-eyed killer is actually my guardian angel. A nice string of good fortune after so many losses." Her eyebrow cocked inquisitively at Miriel. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about those killings, would you?"

"Hrm perhaps, that last one was almost a bit more before I found its weakness." She shrugged, leaning back a bit in her chair, frowning slightly at Eko's situation. She had already heard rumors, but hearing it from Eko herself was unfortunate.

Then the question. She had expected it, despite the disguise and leaving few witnesses, and had her answer quite ready. And accurate. "You could say that. In a way. It was not precisely. me. If that is what you think. But saying so might be close enough. It seemed that you needed a bit of a break, considering how things were going. The target last night seemed to have insufficient defenses, and his death being unconnected to you even better in some ways. I would advise keeping it that way. Some would find it tempting to claim credit, but I doubt having another murdered lord on your head would be particularly helpful, blatant enemy or not."

She sighed, taking out a small container of water and taking a drink, suddenly rather thirsty. As it emptied, she silently refilled it with her own magic, the simple spell was the first she had ever learned oh so long ago while traveling in the desert, and quite easy to cast without movement or speech by this time. "Hrm, is there an official method to gaining the position of lord in Balefire? Or is it a situation where you merely need to force the others to acknowledge you as one, and therefore become one. I have not had the time or a particular inclination to check regarding that."
