Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Just of the coast of the farthest Astendian Isle and jutting off into the northern reaches of the Moonsea, there lived a colony of Selkies. For the most part, their life was very tame. That is not to say it was safe - there is very little safe when it comes to the open ocean, especially when you spend a majority of your life as a seal - but they did not spend every waking moment in dire peril.

That changed the day the sharks came.

It wasn't something that had crept up on them - rather, it exploded into their lives with all the force of a hurricane. On the first day, one of the humans, Kellen, Shuri's husband (for Selkies must breed with ordinary mortals for their line to continue), was out on his boat watching his wife, who had just slipped into her sealskin and over the side, swim out into deeper water to chase fish into his net, when the water below her erupted with fourteen feet of great white shark. It lept high into the air, it's jaws closing about Shuri, then hit the water with a thunderous crash, disappearing from view as quickly as it had appeared.

The alarm was immediately sent up - a shark that large was a danger to everyone - but many of the Seklie themselves were nowhere nearby to hear the bells run from the church tower, nor could be located by their kith or kin. So while many made it out of the water, many more did not. By sunset, causalities had risen from 1 to 6.

By the end of the week, that number had reached 35.

There was not just one massive shark out there - there were an entire shiver of them. And there hadn't been before - ever. The Selkie had lived here for hundreds of years in peace for that reason - because there were no great sharks.

But there were, suddenly, a least a dozen. The elders, both human and Seklie, sat together around a great fire for an entire day and well into the night, consulting with the few among the community gifted with magical foresight.

Then, at dawn, they sent out their fastest messengers, both seal and sailor, with a simple order:

"Bring back the water witch and the dragon's daughter. Only they can save us now."

* * * *

Eryn, a young Selkie, had found Akala first and spilled out the whole story. Akala agreed that the behavior patterns were odd and, of course, she'd help if she could. They'd taken off for the island, pushing themselves and making a three day trip in two.

Akala found it difficult to keep up with the seal. She was not a slow swimmer by any stretch of the imagination, but it was like following a furry missile. Though Eryn kept backtracking to make sure she was still there, the Selkie would disappear into the weeds ahead again and again, vanishing for longer and longer each time.

And the closer they got to isle, the more and more that worried Akala. It was growing dark, particularly in towards the bottom, and it was prime hunting time for sharks. Even though great whites tended to hunt toward the surface, it didn't mean the ocean floor was any safer. The less she could see the seal-girl, the less she could protect her.

She was determined to take the leggy pup in hand when she next returned. It was getting too dangerous.

Then, out of nowhere, said pup was shooting over Akala's head in a cloud of bubbles. Behind her, RIGHT behind her, was a mouthful of teeth. Just teeth. If it was attached to a shark, that really wasn't important - it was just...teeth. In spades.

Akala froze. She couldn't help it. All the training in the world doesn't prepare you to face a mouth that you hope swallows you whole, because then it won't bite you. All she could do was watch as the teeth got nearer and nearer...

Then her forearm was coming up in front of her face and magic was ringing in her bones and there was the rush of water as the shark's mouth closed a mere foot from her face. It began to thrash and twist. Watery vines had lashed up from the bottom and were twisting around its tail and fins as it struggled to escape.

"Who cast tha-oh it was me." Akala thought. She could feel the pull of the entangle spell on her power, she could feel the shark struggling against it and winning.

She cast her arm about her in a half circle, pulling on her will yet again, demanding the kelp forest around her speak.

It did. Before thirty seconds had passed, she knew the location of three more sharks, two seals, a half-dozen fish, and Eryn. Akala's arm shot out and nearby kelp braided itself into a kind of makeshift net, into which the panicked Selkie slammed. It didn't hold the girl, but it slowed her down long enough for Akala to grab her and point her in the direction of land.

They took off at top speed just as the shark tore the last of the vines from the bottom.

Akala had her doubts about keeping up with the seal in a straight contest of speed, but motivation was on her side. She made the mistake of glancing back once - what she saw is unknown, but she gained on, then nearly passed, Eryn.

They both reached the rocky shore at the same time, clearing the water with record speed. As they lay on the beach, gasping for breath, Akala said, "That's what we're up against?" She shuddered. "May the gods have mercy on our souls."

It was not every day that someone hunted her down with a request. An man had tracked her down and was desperately trying to get her aid. Her eyes narrowed as he spoke to her.

"Water witch?" she said. "Call me that again and I will kill you."

The man gulped and began to stammer as he spoke again. "M..my apologies Mistress," he said. "B-but would you please come with me? We have need of your aid and will pay well."

Morishae really did not care that much about this giant shark or what happened to the silkies. But, the promise of coin and the reputation she would gain from this would be beneficial. Besides she might get a few ideas on how improve her skills.

With a sigh she rose and gestured for the man to lead the way. She hardly spoke as they traveled with haste to the open seas. The surface of the water looked calm and peaceful, but she knew that was not the case below. Below the surface a massive predator raged about. As she reached the surface she saw a silkie and a half dragon burst from the water and rush towards the shore.

It had been sometime since she had seen the half-dragon Akala. They had not exactly had friendly interaction, nor had it exactly been something to make them enemies. The elf walked over and looked down at the woman gasping for breath.

"Did not expect to see you here," she said. "Why don't you rest while a professional handles this?"

Without another word she began to walk out towards the water.

"WHAT?!" Akala thought, red hot rage flashing through her mind. Who did this woman think she was anyway?

Then she remembered: Norwood, the stream, the bandits, and that same arrogant, dismissive, and all around bad attitude.

"Oh," she said to Eryn, though her voice was unnecessarily loud and clear. "You didn't tell me you hired the creek hag. What'd you have to pay her in - souls? Ah, nevermind, isn't worth it anyway. She'll just take your money, beat up a few sharks, and flood your town for fun. The sharks will be back and you'll have just wasted time and lives."

She gave a vicious grin in the direction of the elf. "Don't concern yourself with the amateurs, dear. We're just discussing larger things than money or power - nothing you'd have any interest in."

The look she gave Akala could have come from the Ice Queen herself. This *child* thought she could speak to her in a such a manner? Did she think that just because she was some spawn of a dragon that entitled her to such pride and righteousness? She had yet to see anything to prove that this dragon-spawn was nothing but a joke and an annoyance.

"I only use my powers on those who deserve my wrath, child," she said as if she was trying to explain something obvious to a naïve child. "I would advise to you do not incur such a wrath. I have promised the safety of this town and its inhabitants, and I shall do everything in my power to see that through. You on the other hand...I have no such promise with."

She stepped into the water, let the surf lap around her ankles. The water filled her senses. She could feel its every movement. She was not yet sure if her water sense would allow her to detect creatures moving through the water....but she would find out soon enough.

"Either get your worthless hide into the water and actually help these people with more than words, or get back to you 'larger discussions,'" she said without even looking at Akala. "Show to me that your parents odd fetish gave you more than horns and scales."

Without another word her body began to change. She melted into the sea itself and her entire body became water. As water she quickly moved into the deeper waters looking for her shark.
