Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The people of the bog often said that the peat went down at least thirty feet. Everything was built on top of each other, they said. When a plant died, or an animal, or a person, it would fall in and get piled on with more dead things, break down, pack together, all the way up to the point where Eko's boot squished in. The girl clenched her jaw -- as if that would do anything to make the ordeal of lifting her boots with each step any easier. Somehow just thinking about all the dead things she was stepping on made the trip feel longer, not shorter. She was thinking way too much about it, too. The effect was even worse because she was alone. The witch specifically requested that. If Eko was going to traipse around the forest with bodyguards in tow, she wouldn't even find the witch's hut sitting on stilts over the half-flooded mire. That meant she wouldn't get her hands on the object that would probably save her life. The thing she needed to buy one of the more expensive killers she knew of. This time, Eko knew that she couldn't rely on Miriel alone.

It started to rain about halfway back. Eko shoved her bag under her old jacket to protect its contents, hunching over. The darkness made noises but she wasn't afraid. She could see perfectly all the small, shy monsters lurking in the background. They feared her more, becoming even more scarce when the rain started to fall. Eko didn't feel close to another soul until she reached the network of boardwalks coming up on the western border of Balefire. The clouds were too thick to see the distinctive skyline of the city even from up close. Eko worried she would be giving a speech to a thin crowd in the rain.

A shorter walk led her to Mohdu's Inn and Tavern. By then Eko looked awful, soaked to the bone on the head, shoulders and thighs mostly. Water dripped from the ends of her hair. She entered hugging her chest and found, to her relief, that her bag was more or less dry. The proprietor Mohdu rushed to the entrance where she was standing, hastily ordering her to stay put with her muddy boots. He attacked her with a dry rag as she handed off her bag to her friend Enric. "You have four hours to clean up. Cutting it far too close there."

"It was a longer walk than I expected."

"Well, we've got Morishae and Miriel already waiting in our new conference room. You'd better set them up first."

"Will the rain clear up in four hours?" asked Eko, sounding a little out of it, as Mohdu and Enric gently pushed her -- now bootless and with half-dried hair -- toward the back of the building.

"I'm sure it will. Don't worry about that. Just make sure no one kills you," Mohdu finally added before Eko got her stride back. She entered the room with a serious bearing that contrasted her current, decidedly rat-like appearance.

She approached Morishae, whom she'd never met before, and offered to shake hands. "A pleasure to meet you. I'm Eko." Then her attention turned to both of them. "I'm truly sorry for how late I ended up being. I needed to make sure I had your payment secured, Morishae. I don't think it will disappoint." Eko slid into an unused chair at the head of the table, lacing her hands in front of her. "Have both of you been to the Western Rostrum before? The topography situation, for your purposes anyway, is going to be a bit... complex. Hence why I need two people to handle it. One person simply can't protect all those risk areas at once. Ah, feel free to ask questions at any time during this briefing. It shouldn't take long."

Miriel had spent the time waiting for Eko considering just what her youthful employer was up to. (after she politely acknowledged Morishae) When Eko wanted someone dead, it was generally for a reason, even if she wasn't exactly the most moral and upstanding person in the world.

And from what the Avariel had heard, things had been getting quite busy lately. As Eko's sphere of influence expanded, and her resources with it, she had been moving more decisively, hiring more and more people.

However, Miriel had been out of any sort of political manuvering and shadowy power games for, well. She frowned. Longer than she wanted to think about it. Saying she was a bit rusty was an understatement. The fact that she had been far away for much of the time and not really looked into it in detail. Yet. Didn't exactly make it easy to figure out what Eko wanted.

Though she did have her guesses, who really knew what went on in the mind of someone so ambitious. Such a bright spark, so full of life and drive.... Willing to go so far for her goals, even murder one of her own siblings in cold blood. Hopefully it would be one of the things that Miriel wouldn't end up turning on her for.

"So cold, so cruel. It wasn't all that long ago, relatively speaking, that you would have loved to see what she did no matter what it was, even make her dance on your little strings."

Her contacts had informed her of an interesting job. For once she was going to be protecting someone, and not being sent out for a quick and quiet kill. Normally these jobs were not exactly to her liking...but this one also came with good pay. And not payment in gold, but she had been promised some information that may very well increase her powers.

Despite the weather outside, she was perfectly comfortable. Rain meant power to her. She was also completely dry even though she had been in the pour rain not too long ago. An advantage of being able to control water is that the liquid did not need to remain in her clothing.

She had been informed that she would be working with someone else...she just had not expected it to be someone she knew. "Miriel," she said in greeting. "Looks like our paths once again cross. I assume you are to be my partner in this job?"

A few moments later their employer walked in and greeted them. "Just give the details and we shall handle the rest," she said coldly. She wanted to get down to business and finish the job so she could move on.

Their desires to get working were understandable and made Eko's job easier. She couldn't complain. "The Western Rostrum isn't much like the central auditorium. It has all sorts of holes in security. I'll have guards posted in conspicuous areas all over, but you two are the ones I'm really going to have to rely on to keep me safe." She went to a drawer on the wall and pulled out a street map of western Balefire and four paperweights. After pinning it open on the table, her finger went to the position of the Rostrum relative to other businesses. The map was heavily annotated, often with people's names crossed out and replaced with other names. Businesses controlled by Eko had a red E written onto their location on the map. "The platform is at the center of a city square. A wooden wall is the only thing protecting my back and neck as I speak -- not that that's encouraging, since if you see here, this business' building is taller than the wall and allows an open shot on the back of my skull."

Eko's finger slid to the flanks. "My left flank has low roofs, so it may be less of an issue, but my right flank is basically ringed with vantage points both on the roofs and within windows of the buildings. There are lots of places that a sharpshooter could set up, and the striking distance would be nothing to them, even from the back. Of course, that doesn't mean that someone could simply pull a knife at the spur of the moment, run up and try to stab me in the face. Or sling a spell at me from the crowd. Frontal assaults like this are more likely to happen after I've said something, well, controversial. You'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about when you actually go set up." Her eyes went back to her two defenders. "If at all possible, work in the shadows. Don't draw attention to yourself and what you're doing, even if you must kill multiple people. I can stop the speech at any time, but would prefer not to."

She pulled a pair of flares from the drawer as well, handed one each to her counter-assassins. "This is your emergency signal. If something unmanageably big is going to happen, or if my life is immediately in danger, crack it and throw it somewhere where I can see. That's my cue to stop everything I'm doing and exit immediately. I hope you never have to use them. Morishae?" Eko held up the expensive assassin's prize: what looked like a simple folded piece of vellum, but reeked of magic. "This is your reward, if you perform the job. Miriel, we'll need to negotiate whatever payment you might receive. I no longer feel comfortable accepting your help for nothing in return. If there's nothing else you two need, I encourage you to go to the Rostrum, scout the area, and set yourselves up at vantage points as soon as possible. Work as a team when you can."

"Quite. We appear to be partners for this particular. Job." Miriel continued waiting in icy silence until Eko appeared shortly thereafter, seemingly disinterested in conversation.

She would wait for Eko to finish talking before she spoke, taking the flare when it was proffered. "Understood. Any assassins will be indisposed or eliminated before they become a problem." She paused, sighing. "If you wish to discuss payment afterwards. That will be acceptable."

Miriel turned to Morishae briefly as she walked towards the door. "I will meet you at Rostrum. If you do not know the way, I am sure that Eko is capable of directing you."

And with that, she started to walk out the door.
