Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Pao gave a long yawn as he curled up in his little straw bed, he had stolen it and disposed of it on an almost daily basis. He lived in an old shrine dedicated to some old god... some people even come by with food and ask the old god for a blessing or for some other trivial matter... unfortunately the god didn't exist, so Little Pao took it upon himself to complete the missions to the best of his ability. The problem was the more missions he completed, the more missions that appeared... and he couldn't complete them all. He had gotten so busy that some people had caught a glimpse of part of him... but everyone focused on the little felt wings attached to his collar. There was even a rumor that a small angel was helping people out with their problems, not that Pao felt like disagreeing with them, but he did find it annoying that people were calling him some weird name, Cal-something or other.

The problems always seemed to go away after a night of hard work... but tonight was one of those rare nights when there was no work, he was filled up on cake and kebabs, now there was only rest for the weary pup. He gave another yawn as he snuggled into a smaller ball of fluffy white fur. His red eyes slowly started to close... he would only nap for a little while... he still needed to be alert, there were still people that were trying to hunt him down.

One time, when everyone was drunk enough to think themselves philosophers, someone asked Keelin what she would do if she could change a single thing about the world. Her response: "make it so that people don't use the word 'angel' as a figure of speech for a good person." Not only was it really goddamn annoying, but it sometimes led her astray as far as her angel hunts were concerned. Sure, Keelin could tell the difference between the statement "Thanks! You're an angel!" and something like, "Holy crap, you're an angel of Celestia come to purge us all." But it wasn't always so clear-cut. Sometimes rumors of someone's good nature led to rumors of actual angelic lineage. In superstitious regions of the continent, it was sometimes hard to tease apart fact from fiction.

Most of the time Keelin felt like she was flailing around the world blindly, hoping her hook-swords would catch on a halo.

Balefire made her current predicament worse. It was almost impossible for a foreigner like her to navigate the complicated twists and turns of the city to reach the rumored destination. She did know almost for a fact that angels lived incognito in the City of Lanterns, waging a shadow war against resident demons and any other kinds of corruption that clung to the streets. They probably weren't numerous, but they were definitely distracted. Keelin decided to start with some small fry: a rumored angel who lived as a wiseman in an obscure little building. After hours of doubting her sense of direction, Keelin came upon the run-down shrine. She removed her wrapped-up blades from the loop on her baldric and proceeded cautiously inside.

Thump. Thump. Thump, went the shoes of the interloper. Pao's eyes shot open as he checked himself... he still had his collar with the knife strapped to it, just a few centimeters away from his face so he could easily grab the hilt with his teeth. He shook himself and let out a small sigh, it seemed he might have work to do... but then again maybe it was just another person offering more food. The idea of food perked up his little curly tail, perhaps this night would still be good. The building he leaved in was an old shrine, it was one story tall with a high roof and large beams... but it did have a small attic, which was where he tended to sleep. He used some of the fallen beams as steps to get up and down, most humans would have a hard time, but his small paws and small form allowed him to use the cluttered beams as stepping stones to cross the area before the enemy could see him.

He raced his shadow down the fallen beams and into the courtyard... where only two lanterns were lit. The two lanterns lit up the area where people left notes, money, and offerings to the supposed angelic being that lived there, of course he had also thought of it as his food bowl, even the occasional burnt offering was brought and he got to chew on the charred bones with al the flavor seared in... delicious. What he saw creeping through his home was a woman... she was well armed and moved in a way that she wasn't a customer or a believer coming to give away food... perhaps she could be a new playmate!

Pao wagged his tail as he sauntered up to her, plopping himself down right in front of her as he tilted his head to the side. His red eyes looking directly into her own, he let his jaw drop a bit as he began to pant, his tongue slightly dangling out as a single ear folded, this was the same face that got him a free bread roll... perhaps this nice lady will give him stuff and play with him, he was tired of playing tug of war without anyone else to tug the other end.

The whole place was totally trashed. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months, lots of the beams had collapsed, and the offering area of the shrine was caked with old char from food. Keelin got a good look at the place, saw that it was empty of suitable angels. Then she spotted movement. A little white dog came rushing up to her. It was incredibly cute, and friendly too. Surprised, the angel hunter crouched down to receive it, putting her weapons on the ground nearby just in case. "Oh hello there. A stray?" Petting it showed that wasn't the case, as it had a collar.

A collar with little felt angel wings on it. Keelin's eye narrowed. Her hands stopped moving. What was she supposed to do? The dog was white, inexplicably living in a place thought to be the dwelling place of a divine angel. Not many things could explain that. Angels were known to shapeshift, but putting wings on the collar was a little too obvious... unless the obviousness itself was a trap? Eugh, thinking about this made her brain hurt. Maybe it was the angel's pet dog. Keelin looked around to make sure no one was around to hear what she was going to say. "Er... are you a talking dog, by any chance? Or otherwise magical?"

Pao wagged his tail faster as the woman bent down... but she seemed to hesitate after a moment of inspecting him. Her words made him tilt his head a little farther... he could understand humans, but she could not understand him, the best he could do was shake his head and yawn. It seemed the woman came here seeking something... and she wasn't prepared to give him ear scratches or belly rubs. He straightened his ears and stood up, turning around and carelessly flashing the dagger strapped to his side. He began sauntering away when several loud barks met his ears.

He turned and made a short dash past the woman... the hounds had found him again. This happened once a month, the family he escaped from would send out hunting dogs to find and kill him... but his small form and stealthy nature made him hard to track, but every once in a while a few found his hiding spot. He moved his head to the side and drew the dagger, rushing past the first dog as he sliced it's throat. Only three dogs remained and they charged Little Pao, the first one snapped at Pao's thin legs, trying to cripple him, while the other two fanned out to try and stop him from escaping... but Pao had no intention of running. He hopped over the dog's head and buried his knife in it's back, ripping it cruelly out as he flipped.

The other two charged in, but Pao moved like a small fuzzy whirlwind, using his knife to slash legs and stomachs. It was only a moment later when all of them were dead and Pao was cleaning his dagger on one of their hides. He sheathed his dagger and walked back to Keelin, hopping up onto his hind legs and waving his front paws as if in a dance. After that he sat down, bowing his head slightly as if asking for a pet for his good deed.

Well, the fact the dog actually shook its head in response to her odd question was an indicator in and of itself that this wasn't something normal. He might not be a talking dog, but he certainly wasn't any mundane dog either. Keelin's eyes widened when she caught a glimpse of steel strapped to his side. She'd seen and experienced a lot of strange things ever since leaving the monastery, and this had to be at least the thirteenth strangest.

There wasn't much time to react to anything else as the run-down building shuddered. A pack of hounds broke in and all converged on the little white one at once. Keelin almost reflexively went for her weapons, but saw to her surprise the dog actually unsheathe a dagger and start killing those beasts with incredible efficiency. The angel hunter just stood there and stared as each one systematically died. After the carnage, the happy little pup trotted back to Keelin, lowering his head and looking up at her with sad, irresistible eyes. "You want... praise?" Her hand hesitantly came down to pat the dog and scratch him behind the ears a bit. "You're cute, but I really don't know why--... just, Heaven above. Okay, maybe this is the ninth strangest thing I've ever seen." Keelin laughed a little, mostly to herself. "Seriously, what is your deal?"

He received head scratches! His tail wagged furiously as he thoroughly enjoyed the attention, the strange woman kept on talking though, saying he was the ninth strangest thing she had ever seen. The last thing though, that was something he could answer. He hopped up and barked a few times, running around her legs and then rushing towards the main entrance, stopping to bark a few more times at her, motioning with his nose to go inside. He sat down and raised his paw as high as he could, and lowered it, he repeated the process several times, as if saying to hurry up.

He lead her through the damaged parts, slowly helping guide her to a small door hidden beneath some straw. He kicked the straw away and opened it up, revealing a small set of stairs, in the beginning one would have to crouch to go down, but it quickly descended into a hidden basement. The hidden room was filled with toys, books, scrolls, and finally... a list of yellowing papers. He picked up a mouthful of them and carried them to Keelin, dropping them at her feet, his tail wagging as he waited for her to read them. The notes were mostly just favors, lost objects, old wounds needing a special herb to treat it, but there were also a few hit-lists mixed in, some of them had entire gangs on them that needed to be stomped out. This little dog had made this area better... by killing multiple gangs, certain evil individuals, and delivered medicine without ever being correctly identified by a human.
