Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Seele watched as the vampire mulled over the information. He could almost hear the gears turning in the man's head. Although there was no way to be sure, the elf suspected that he had described an ability that was strikingly similar to what Lyle was already capable of, which suggested he might have developed skills as a Windbow without any training whatsoever. Lyle soon confirmed his hypothesis, admitting that he had difficulty ascertaining which of his skills derived from magic and which were a byproduct of his vampiric transformation. "Well, the easiest way to tell is to see which abilities are still available to you in the daylight. If they are due to your turning, they will not work; if they are magical in nature, they should still function. Of course, that requires that you expose yourself to sunlight, which I suspect would be remarkably unpleasant for you."

He watched the vampire for a moment before breaking out into a grin. "Of course, there are some abilities that cannot possibly be derived from your turning. That light spell, for example. I think the simplest way to proceed would be to teach you a brand new spell." The sorcerer held one hand out, whispering some words in the harsh, brittle language of magic native to his homeland. Lines of dark power traced through the air, crackling and sizzling as they formed the shape of a small wand. It materialized a few seconds later, a sleek length of black metal that had been carved with harsh, angular runes. Seele gripped the handle of the focus, twitching the tip back and forth almost experimentally.

"So tell me, what is it you wish to learn?"

"I'm, um, not sure," Ollie confessed. Ever since he'd tossed the idea of being a mage from his mind, he simply hadn't thought about it. Now to suddenly find that not only could he do magic, he'd been doing magic for ages without even thinking, he found himself with no starting point for where to ask for lessons. He leaned back reflexively, lounging in the air, the effort of flight in Balefire being nearly nil and making it, honestly, less of an effort than standing.

"I mean, the Windbow thing is something I'd like to learn about, but you've already said you haven't studied that," Ollie said, counting on his fingers. "Other archery magics might also be neat, but again, you don't know them." He tilted his head back, meaning to stare up at the stars but only receiving another reminder that, despite the ease of constant flight, Balefire had it's share of drawbacks. "I met a man who could control, grow, and manipulate plants with magic. I wouldn't mind learning that, since I seem to be in forests a lot, but I'm not certain how practical that would be..." Ollie shrugged.

"I suppose you could start by teaching me something that would be useful for you? I haven't forgotten this is a quid pro quo deal, so if there's some magic you'd feel would aid you if I knew it, we could begin there." He glanced upward again. "Is the sky here always like that, by the way? Just...blackness?"

Seele nodded. "The history of Balefire is quite long and complicated, but the short version is that it shares a connection with the elemental plane of darkness. Shadows rule this town, and no sunlight or starbeams can pierce its shroud." He tilted his head back to stare at the inky blackness, a genuine smile curling up the corners of his mouth. The City of Lanterns was perfect for a sorcerer such as Seele. In other places he was forced to rely on natural shadows, but here he need not fear running out of elemental sources. Even the ever-present lanterns only served to define the darkness more sharply and make it stronger outside of the reach of the lights. There was nowhere in all of Imythess that his powers were stronger.

"Those who work with me are often required to use stealth. I am sure that you know some of that, given your origins. However, with magic it is possible to be all but completely unseen." The elf made an imperious gesture and his own shadow leapt off of the ground, wrapping around his gaunt frame. Within moments he was merely a blurry patch of darkness that was barely visible at all thanks to the surrounding gloom. After a few seconds the shadows rolled off of him like water, sinking back onto the ground. "You might find other uses for this spell. Used during the day, it should protect your skin slightly from the sunlight."

Seele held both hands in front of him, the thin, pale fingers a stark contrast to his dark clothing. He slowly moved the digits through a series of four hand symbols, pausing after each to make sure that Lyle could examine them closely. "These motions will assist you in channeling your inner reserves of mana. With time, you might become accomplished enough to not rely on such crutches." He nodded to the vampire to indicate that he should attempt to mimic the movements. He made the undead stop several times to fix minuscule mistakes in the gestures. Although the spell might still be activated with small imperfections, it would be less efficient and more draining on his resources.

Only when Lyle could replicate them exactly did the sorcerer move on to the incantation. He raised one finger and began to write in mid-air, leaving behind lines of sizzling black energy. He pronounced the words slowly and carefully as each was inscribed. "Oloth nindel zhah Isto, veldri ussta vaartur." Each word has a unique inflection that had to be just right to correctly harness the magic into its proper form. There was a musical cadence to them similar to the elf's faint accent, signifying that it was not any tongue native to Chaon but rather a remnant of Seele's lost world. This time he was even more demanding, making sure that Lyle could speak the entire incantation without error several times before proceeding.

"Now the most important part... The hand motions and words simply act as a focus, a path for the mana to travel along. It is your will that actually gets it flowing. I want you to imagine the change your spell will create in the world. Reality shall change at your whim, Lyle... if only you are motivated enough." Seele stepped back and indicated that the vampire should attempt to cast the spell. He knew better than to stand close to a fledgling mage attempting a new spell for the first time.

... I can do this step by step, but it might be more enjoyable if I just teach everything in one post. If you'd prefer the latter let me know and I'll edit this post with more content.

Ollie settled back on the ground as Gerhin called Balefire's darkness around him, becoming little more than a blackish blur with a heartbeat. Gehrin said this was the spell he'd teach Ollie first, as not only would it help him with remaining hidden, it'd also help shade Ollie in the daytime. He didn't act as though it'd be perfect concealment from the sun, but hardly anything was.

"I like having multiple layers of protection," Ollie said, and the instruction began, Gehrin waving his spindly sticks for fingers, settling them into four different shapes, ensuring Ollie was watching. Apparently they were to help Ollie shape the magic so it'd work. Ollie wasn't certain why he needed them; he'd been casting magic without any hand waving, but he wasn't the teacher here, and he remembered having to go through such motions when he was learning the Light spell.

Gehrin didn't let up on Ollie repeating the motions, fixing and correcting what seemed to be minor difference in Ollie's eyes, until the vampire finally signed the gestures to the elf's satisfaction. The entire thing seemed annoying for someone now used to simply thinking about doing things and causing them to occur, but at least Gehrin didn't expect him to use this method forever. Gehrin wasn't done then, however. Next came the verbal incantation, strange words in an unknown language that Gehrin wrote into the air itself, pointing and enunciating each syllable as though they were in primary school. Again Gehrin corrected every minor slip up, having Ollie say each word over and over until he was satisfied Ollie could perform it not only once, but several times.

Finally, Gehrin said they were at the point where Ollie would actually cast the spell rather than wiggle his fingers or hurt his throat. "It is your will that actually gets it flowing," he explained, noting the words and wiggles were just creating a direction for the mana to go. "I want you to imagine the change your spell will create in the world. Reality shall change at your whim, Lyle..." Ollie worked to keep his reflexive flinch under control. "If only you are motivated enough."

He stepped back and motioned for Ollie to proceed. Ollie breathed, raised his hands, and tried to focus, getting his hands, wrists, and fingers just so, and pronouncing the words with the right inflections. "Oloth nindel zhah Isto, veldri ussta vaartur."

This time the smoke barely gathered before it faded again. Ollie glared, but made a third attempt, this time ensuring he was focusing on the spells effect, the inky blackness gathering, surrounding him, shielding him, cloaking him in shadow. "Oloth nindel zhoh Isto, veldri ussta vaartur."

Now nothing happened beyond Ollie looking a bit silly. Ollie kept trying, but either he was focusing too much on the intonations and didn't visualize the spell's effects well enough, or he did place his willpower into the spells effects and ended up fumbling over his hands or his tongue and messing up the casting itself. It reached a point where Ollie began scrunching his eyes shut, muttering "Hide, hide, hide" under his breath whenever he wasn't saying the whole Oloth nindel spiel.

That worked, in its own, backwards way. When he opened his eyes, Ollie figured that he was hidden, but that was because he was ensnared in a fogback, the cloud deciding his frustrated ruminations were a command for it. Ollie growled, flailed, and finally got enough of a grip on the fogbrain to lift it back over his head.

"Okay, sorry, this isn't working," Ollie confessed. "I can do the words, I can do the motions, and I'm sure I'm focusing my willpower on actually getting the spell going, but I can't do all three at once." Ollie slumped and sighed. "Maybe this is what they were talking about when they said I had no magical aptitude: inability to juggle all these things at once."

Seele made note of the way that the vampire flinched when his name was spoken. It was barely noticeable, but the elf had a wealth of experience picking up on non-verbal clues from his various illicit activities throughout Imythess. He had already suspected that 'Lyle' was not truly the undead's name, but it was nice to have a confirmation of that fact. He had other ways of gathering information he would need to use in order to learn his student's true name. Knowledge was power, and Seele always preferred working from a position of power.

He watched closely as the youth started to work the spell, attempting to do the hand motions and incantation and gather his will simultaneously. It was no surprise when he failed. Most apprentices spent close to a month perfecting their mind to cast their first spell. After the first one it grew easier, but utilizing magic was utterly different than most mental exercises. After several failed attempts Lyle looked about ready to explode. his cloud companion apparently sensed the undead's frustration and made itself into a miniature fogbank to help hide the vampire, but that only exacerbated his frustration.

Lyle was closer to success than he realized. During several of his attempts the sorcerer had felt a subtle shift in the ambient flow of mana. Magical energy was being drawn towards the vampire, but his nervousness and lack of concentration fouled up the spell before it could gather any headway. Seele tapped his foot against the ground, eyes glazing over as he thought of how best to address this obstacle in the training process. "Nonsense. If I thought you lacked the aptitude, I would hardly waste my time with instruction. You simply need a push to get the proper momentum. If properly focused, the spell will complete itself once you put enough will into it."

"Allow me to help."
Seele stepped forward and reached out, intending to place one hand on Lyle's shoulder. He prepared the spell mentally, putting the ordered mana just within reach of the vampire. "This time do not bother with hand motions or words... Simply reach out for the magic and will it into existence. I shall provide the basics. I simply wish you to understand how it feels to successfully cast the spell. It should allow you to take your mind off certain aspects of the process and allow you to focus on proprly channeling mana."

At the end of the cycle that constituted day in Balefire, it turned out the murderous slaver was more supportive than certain family members Ollie could name, assuring him that he was, indeed, capable. He just needed to give the spell a bit more of a push to have it roll on its own. It was strange how he only found such instructors outside of his home.

"Allow me to help," Gehrin said, and Ollie fought the urge to jump as he laid one pale, slim hand on his shoulder. Ollie could feel something welling up around him, feeling oddly warm and greasy simultaneously. "This time do not bother with hand motions or words..." Gehrin instructed, telling Ollie to simply cast the spell with his will while Gehrin, Ollie surmised, took care of the rest. Ollie nodded, closed his eyes, breathed, tried to ignore Gehrin's touch, and tore his focus away from saying the right words or performing the proper hand motions.

He knew what the spell did. He knew what he wanted to transpire. He just had to think of that simply...occuring, perhaps like when he wished to fly or using the Voice, for a more extreme example. Focus on the shadows curling and rising around him, blending him into the darkness and hiding him from view. The greasy warm feeling shifted against his skin, now feeling more soft and familiar somehow, encasing him without smothering or restricting.

Ollie continued holding his focus, uncertain if the spell would hold - if it was holding to begin with - if he ceased his concentration. He didn't even dare open his eyes, uncertain what he should see. Should he be able to see through the shadows? Would it cause his vision to be hazy? What if he only covered himself partially in shadows? He didn't dare look.

"Is it working?" he finally asked, leaving it up to Gehrin to break the news to him.

Seele held his breath, anticipation shining in his golden eyes. This would be the true test of the undead's potential. If he did not possess the will to harness the primordial forces of mana, he would fail here. It would be quite the disappointment. Although a vampire naturally possessed gifts that would make it a perfect operative in his slaving enterprises, one that was also a capable spellcaster would be preferable. So few of his men had the talent and intelligence necessary to harness magic. It was one of his main frustrations with his endeavors: slavery simply did not call to many talented individuals, instead attracting brawny, brainless thugs like a rotten carcass drew flies.

For a few moments nothing happened and the elf prepared himself to be disappointed. In the next heartbeat the mana he had so carefully crafted and made available was sucked away, drawn towards Lyle and released into the world. Seele took a step back, his eyes shining softly as he watched the spell manifest itself. It did not appear as his own magic did, where the shadows leapt off of the ground and wrapped around his gaunt frame. Instead, motes of darkness seemed to coalesce out of nothing, swirling around Lyle. As more and more flecks of blackness joined the crowd they lumped together, forming a shroud of inky darkness. When the magic was complete they settled over the vampire like a second skin, making his outline appear hazy and indistinct. Seele knew that to an observer, the undead would have appeared to disappear; only his own aptitude and experience with shadow magic allowed his eyes to pierce the arcane gloom.

"Open your eyes and see for yourself... Your vision should be unimpeded, but the same cannot be said for others." For one of the first times since their first meeting the elf's expression and words seemed genuine. It had been a long time since he had instructed anyone in the ways of magic. Long ago, almost beyond the reach of memory, he had been responsible for instructing younglings in casting their first spell. There had been nothing more enjoyable than their first success, for both student and mentor. A small trace of that pride filled him now, unaffected by the years and the circumstances of his life. "Remember that feeling. The experience of enacting your will on the material world. That, more than anything else, is what is necessary for spellcasting: indomitable conviction."

Ollie stared down in wonder at his hand, turning it back in forth as he watched the solidified shadows slither and shift over his skin, hiding it from view. It was magic, actual magic, not just vampire tricks or childhood cantrips. Honest to goodness magic.

"Ha, ahahahahaha! I did it!" He said, launching into the air again and arcing overhead. "Look, look!" He said, holding up his hand as he hovered over Gehrin's head. "I did magic! Real magic! Ahahaha!"

It took a few more celebratory cartwheels for ollie to finally settle down, though he quietly realized what he settled on was his attempting to be helpful cloud pet. For now, Ollie shrugged and sat crossed legged on the thing. It was certainly soft, if a bit moist.

"So, wait, what else can I do?" He said, letting the shadow cover fade back into the normal darkness around them. "Lightning bolts, maybe fireballs? Except I guess that's a bit too big and loud for an ambush predator? Or wait! Maybe invisibility? Illusions? One of those cool spells to make trees obey you, or maybe even talk to you? I read that's a thing. Or wait, maybe something that can control the air! Like, make a big huge windstorm and-"

Without thinking much of it, Ollie idly focused on that new, strange sensation that was gathering mana Gehrin taught him. Suddenly, he felt the air around him going mad, whistling and whirling like a self contained tornado. The vampire reflexively raised his arm to shield his face, but realized that, as much as he could feel it, it wasn't effecting him, neither was the mass of vapor under his feet dispersing into nothing as such a localized storm could cause.

Ollie waved his hands around, trying to work out how to stop the windstorm. Something he did or thought worked, thankfully, and the wind ceased as quickly as it started. Ollie stayed kneeling on the cloud, blinking, attempting to work out what in the world just happened.

"Alright...um..." he finally said, his expression still blank with shock. "I'm guessing that's...that's one of the Windbow powers, maybe? Because I really don't know how that happened otherwise."

The sorcerer smirked slightly as he watched the vampire celebrate his success. It was not unusual for novice spellcasters to react in much the same manner. Seele could remember his own sensation of victory when first tapping his arcane potential, although it was so long ago the memory was fuzzy. 'Lyle' did not quite realize that this was only the first step in a long and arduous journey. Mastering magic required extensive studying and memorization. There were those to which magic came more naturally or instinctively, but Seele was of the belief that they would never be able to match the efficiency and strength of those who had studied the arcane arts at length and developed their skills through practice and experimentation.

He nodded in response to the undead's query, but before he could respond something unusual happened. He felt a thrumming through the air as the vampire drew mana to himself, manipulating it with far more skill and speed than he had demonstrated moments prior. The slaver narrowed his eyes slightly and prepared to defend himself if necessary, unsure if the earlier displays of ineptitude had simply been a ploy to get him to lower his guard. The wind in the courtyard rose up, whirling around 'Lyle' in a tight vortex. After a few seconds the sorcerer relaxed again, sure that this was not an assassination attempt. The vampire had simply tapped into powers that he didn't know he possessed.

"I suspect that it is, although the lore I have studied said little about the exact abilities of the Windbows. It seems too coincidental to be much else." Seele shrugged, filing the information away for later. He wasn't exactly sure what the purpose of the magic was yet, but he could figure it out later when studying the order of air-bowmen. "To answer your earlier question,, you'll find what you're capable of is limited only by your own imagination. There exist more spells than one could learn in a single lifetime, across multiple schools and fields of study. Lightning bolts and fireballs are common offensive abilities, although I find them slightly overt. I usually prefer more insidious avenues of attack, but what you wish to learn is entirely up to you."

"Well," Ollie said, crossing his arms. "Considering my own activities, quieter, stealthier magic would be better. I'm strong and fast enough that I really don't need something like magic lighting or fireballs to win."

He looked down, still sitting on the cloud. He could feel the vapor soaking through the seat of his pants, but it was oddly comfortable. There was also the novelty factor, he supposed. Something else bothered him however, about Gehrin himself.

"Why are you in the business you're in, Gehrin?" he asked. "Considering your intelligence and skill in magic, there really isn't a need for you to be caught up in...what you are."

Seele raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised by the vampire's audacity. Then again, it was in the nature of students to question their teachers... it was simply odd that 'Lyle' would be so comfortable prying into his life given the circumstances they had originally met under. "On to personal questions already, eh?" There was a note of wry amusement in his voice, suggesting that he was less offended than his words indicated.

He took his time composing a response, standing there in silence for almost a full minute before speaking once more. "Are you familiar with the manner in which demonic entities gain power? They are each given a domain over which to rule. Some embody wrath, others lust... every sin is represented in their legions." He spoke softly, not looking at the undead or anywhere in particular. His words seemed reflective more than anything. Self-consciously, he raised one hand and rubbed at his wrist as if the joint were sore. "There once was an Abyssal whose demense was the chafing of chains on a prisoner's body. The irritation and humiliation such a small sensation can produce... well. It was a potent source of power and a much sought-after jurisdiction."

The shadow sorcerer seemed to come back to the present, grinning crookedly. "Forgive me. You asked for a reason, not exposition." He shrugged offhandedly. "Why does one do anything in this world? There is something I desire. My business, as you put it, is not the final goal. It is rather the means to an end. I require both money and influence, and I have been able to acquire both quickly and with little hassle."

"I still think you could have thought of something else, but I'm guessing this is something private." He found himself rubbing at his own wrists at Gehrin's speech, remembering not only the cold burn of the manacles that held him when they first met, but also the chafing and the constant reminder he was trapped. There was some sort of demonic creature dedicated to chains? He could believe it.

"I won't pry then, since it sounds private," He continued, jumping off the cloud, which drifted closer to bump against his leg. He absentmindedly reached down to pat it. He'd need to come up with a name for the thing, he guess. "But it sounds like maybe you can give up this whole thing sooner if you get to whatever goals you have for this whole thing more quickly." It twisted his stomach to say that, but it was as close to a endorsing, truthful statement that he could voice.

"So, now I can actually use magic, have another method to avoid sunburn, and also got a pet cloud. That sounds like a productive day...night..." He looked back up at the black sky. There was no change overhead. It still set the hairs on his neck on end. "So, Gehrin, what's next?"

Seele nodded in agreement when the vampire guessed that his motivation was a private matter. It might be more accurate to say that he had worked in secret for so long that he could not even imagine sharing his goals with any confidante, and especially not one that he had only recently become acquainted with. There were a great many events that he had manipulated throughout the realm in the past several years, and if he were to share his true goals with anyone it could threaten to destroy all of his machinations and plans. He had already recovered from such a setback once; the sorcerer did not know if he would have the patience to do so once more.

"Next, Lyle? Well, I suppose that means you are free to go about your business." The slaver shrugged, one hand going to his belt and undoing the clasp of a pouch. he withdrew a small, faceted black gem from the bag and tossed it at the vampire. Unlike most jewels it was remarkably lusterless, dull and dark. "If I have need of your services, I will reach you through this stone. I'll provide you with a time and place for a meeting. Someone will be there to give you instructions. If you do not respond I will assume that means you have taken advantage of me and no longer wish to fulfill your end of the deal." Seele's lips pulled back in an expression that showed too much teeth to be a smile. "I would recommend against that course of action."

The elf closed the pouch once more, bowing his head a fraction towards the vampire. "That being said, I hope to see you again. Your kind is much more useful to me whole. Now, if there is nothing else..." His voice trailed off into silence, giving 'Lyle' the chance to speak up before the shadow sorcerer departed.

Ollie caught and studied to small gem Gehrin tossed him. It was matte, black, and felt strange in his palm, as though either the texture or the temperature was off. He'd never seen a communication gem of its make before, though it'd be possible for Gehrin to craft his own or pay someone to create a custom model. He placed it in an inner vest pocket. Gehrin made a few more little threats in the tone of offhand statements, then nodded, just a bit, toward him.

Ollie returned the gesture, inclining his head just a bit more than Gehrin. "Nothing more, then. Today's certainly been...enlightening, and it's hardly fair to take without giving, right?" He lifted up into the air, the cloud drifting around just beside him. "Well, I think I'll explore this place a bit, then. Get more familiar with it. I suppose I'll be seeing you later, Gehrin." He nodded again and flew up and over several buildings, the cloud happily drifting in his wake.

He settled on what looked to be an abandoned tower. He could float about all...he looked up again at the featureless sky. He could float about as long as he pleased, but doing so over a crowded street felt a bit exposed and more than a little silly. He shut his eyes and focused, thinking of his fly dragon and calling out to it. The thing said their bond was enough that they could speak mind to mind despite the distance. It seemed time to test this out.

"Ollie?" he heard, the dragon's voice worried and relieved in his head.

Hey, I'm alright, Ollie said. I'll be heading back soon, unless you want to bring Justin to Balefire and meet me here?

Ollie felt the long pause between them. "Thought you in Taras..."

Well, I was. Now I'm not. It's... He was about think "complicated," but then recalled the plus sides of this communication method. He simply shared his memories of traveling through that strange void and appearing, nearly instantaneously, across the continent. I actually know some magic now, as well, helpful for the sun, and I think Gehrin and I might be getting along somewhat-

"Ollie, it dangerous." the dragon thought, and Ollie rocked back as he felt what emotions he'd just sent the dragon. There were also downsides to this method. Hints and doubletalk couldn't hide how one felt as they thoughtspoke, and the dragon could see hints of parallel thoughts, and the emotions of plotting and eventual betrayal.

I know, but...I'm a vampire. I can afford to play the long game, to learn about his methods and operations, to stop it from within. I have to...I have to do something to try and help....

"Then kill him now! He baddie, right?"

I...I don't think I can.... Ollie thought, slipping out hints of Gehrin's strength. I've seen some of what he can do, and I'm certain he's toying with me, and I'm pretty damn sure I'm alive because he honestly does want a vampire to work for him. There's something deeper going on with him, and I doubt I could stand up to it if he decided to turn it against me... He thought again of that strange, maniacal moment when he was trapped in captivity in Taras, where he first met the elf. It felt like lust, but there'd been something wrong about it that Ollie couldn't place.

Besides, what if I do? People are still trapped who knows where, others in his organization will just rise up to take his place...I need to know more to stop the hydra's heart, not just lop off a head.

Ollie felt the sigh in his brain. "I bring Justin, kay? I call you when we get there."

Ollie nodded, a gesture the dragon had no hope of seeing. Alright, see you soon. and the "call" ended. Ollie briefly thought of bothering the dragon again and telling him about the cloud, but he kept that to himself. He didn't know what the dragon would think of the thing, but from his past experience when dealing with creatures he couldn't read the minds of, he wouldn't like it. One couldn't mindread something that didn't have a mind.

And now, he thought as he walked to the edge of the tower, stepped off, and floated back to street level, it was time he sought out a place for his next meal, before he actually grew hungry. Gehrin acted as though vampires were common here, so there must be someplace he could eat without too much incident.
