Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Firaliel replied, "Petrified wood isn't extremely rare, but it isn't very common, either. I don't come across it very often, but I see it occasionally. Basically, it's wood that has become stone, as far as anyone can tell. Regardless, these are not normal arrows. Unless there's a reason to stay here, I think we should start moving upstream to look for whoever did this."

Firaliel felt that she'd inspected the body enough and that it was time to get moving. She stood up, waiting for Erin to do the same. Once Erin was ready, Fira would start walking, heading upstream. At this point, Fira was paying attention to her surroundings.

It took Fira only a few moments to realize that something looked a bit out of place in a few of the bushes. A closer look and Fira realized that people were hiding, trying to watch the area without being noticed.

Fira said softly, "Wait here."

With that, Fira took off running toward the bushes, but she appeared to be heading toward a position off to one side of their position, an attempt to get close but not make it plainly obvious that she was heading toward them. At this point, Fira's feline companions were positioned so that they would threaten the hiding people if they ran away from Fira.

I'll let you figure out how the hiding people react (since I think you know who they are).

Erin was inclined to agree with Firaliel. If the wood was indeed uncommon, then it was an odd thing to carry in the form of arrows. If nothing else, it meant a certain signature for the archer. On the elemental plane of water, there were many weapons and other items that were forged or crafted in such a manner as to indicate the signature of the maker. In fact, crafters had a sub-culture of their own that almost completely revolved around signatures. Signing one’s work had thus become an art form in and of itself. Perhaps the same thing was true here. If it was and the wood from which these arrows had been fletched was the signature of the arrows’ fletcher, then it wouldn’t be very difficult to track down the maker and - through him or her - the individual that had murdered this man. When Firaliel said it was time to go, interrupting her private reverie, Erin nodded and stood.

She followed the sound of Firaliel’s movements as she hurried along, hoping she wouldn’t have to fight. She was no fighter. She was a healer and a musician; that was all. She didn’t know the first thing about casting spells other than for the purpose of healing, and that was more innate power being drawn upon than any sort of spellcraft. Still, if she could help her fellow musician in some manner, she most certainly would. She just didn’t know how she possibly could. Her violin was a fine instrument but it was no weapon, and she wouldn’t have dreamed of using it as such.

When Firaliel told her to wait where she was, she listened. As her friend moved away, she listened for any sound that might indicate where she was. Her movements had quickly grown silent, which Erin took to mean that her friend had gone off to investigate something. When she felt a nudge at her hand by something river-soaked, she uttered a little gasp of surprise and found her hand wandering over what felt like Braille. It was a language that had been invented long ago and spread to many different realms, although it was rare on the elemental planes. Still, she felt the message written upon the strange bar that the creature was holding. She took it and ran her fingers along it.

I hope this message finds you well, my daughter. Unfortunately, I could not send our family pets with you. However, one of them has recently had kits. As such, I have - against your mother’s wishes, I might add - sent one of them after you with this message. It took me quite a bit of time to train it as my personal messenger but I believe that it was worth it. Being blind, you need all the help you can get. I give you this shiver beast. He is called Winterheart, and I believe that he will be invaluable upon your journey. He has been well-trained as a tracker as well so he should have no trouble finding you. I only hope that the two of you are paired with no harm having come to either of you. May you fare well until your return.

When she returned the bar to Winterheart, she knelt and reached down to pet him. He purred before trotting off. He returned a short time later, the stone bar that he had been carrying gone, and promptly made some noises that Erin recognized. The shiver beast was indicating that it was male and that it would remain unseen until the moment when it was needed. All the shiver beasts back home were trained to identify their sex and whether they were offensive, defensive, or scouts. This one was obviously a scout. She patted his head.

“I understand,” she replied in Elvish.

Then the shiver beast was gone. A moment later, there was a commotion as someone nearby fell into the river.

”Winterheart?” she whispered, knowing it could hear her but not wanting to alert whomever else might be nearby.

Then another fell into the water. Unbeknownst to her, Winterheart had just saved her life. He had stayed completely out of sight but had latched onto two archers’ backsides and dragged them into the fast-moving water. Winterheart slipped into the water to ensure that they did not return to the impending fight.

”Firaliel?” she said in that same whispered tone, still in Elvish, hoping that the people nearby did not have keen enough hearing to pick up the melodic tones of her voice as well.

As Fira approached one group of hidden enemies, she'd completely missed another pair hidden elsewhere. As she approached her group, she was aware that some kind of animal, one that looked somewhat like a dog, though different, was interacting with Erin in a clearly friendly manner. Fira didn't pay much attention to that, though, as she needed to keep her focus on the group of people she was approaching.

Fira covered most of the last hundred feet, keeping herself behind cover and otherwise out of sight. She's expected to be spotted, but it seemed that the group she was approaching either didn't see her or didn't realize that she was a threat. When Fira was barely twenty feet from the group, she heard a splash. She was hidden from view, motionless in the shadows, so she glanced over and saw a person falling into the river, clearly Erin's animal companion's doing. Fira also recognized that this creature was dealing with a second group of enemies that she'd missed.

Fira saw that the group near her was distracted by what was going on. She saw them pull out bows, clearly intending to shoot at Erin's pet. Before they could do that, Fira closed the distance to them, taking advantage of the distraction. She killed two of them with her daggers almost noiselessly, and before they could fall to the ground, she was holding a dagger to the third man's throat.

Fira gave him a few seconds to let the facts that his comrades were dead and that she had him at her mercy sink in. She then said, "Come with me. You're going to tell us what's going on here."

Fira looked around as she walked back to Erin with her prisoner. Fira's steps might have been almost perfectly silent, but her prisoner was definitely making enough noise to tell Erin where he was.

Once she reached Erin, Fira said, "I think we got them all. Your animal companion put two in the river, I stabbed two, and I have the last one with me. If he values his life, he's going to tell us what's going on here." Fira faced Erin and asked, "Erin, do you have anything that you want to ask him?"

When she next heard Firaliel’s voice, Erin first heard some sort of commotion. It seemed that there was someone with Firaliel. Her suspicion was confirmed when she told the man that he was going to spill the beans. Erin did not say anything at first. She wasn’t sure what to make of the situation. It seemed that there were multiple people in the area, although it sounded as though most of them - hopefully, all of them (except for the one Firaliel was holding, of course) - had been dealt with. Winterheart was apparently more than just a guide; he was also a bodyguard.

Then Firaliel asked if there was anything that Erin wanted to ask the man. She turned toward Firaliel and her prisoner but the only thing she could think of to ask was who the dead man was and why he had been killed. She thought about it for a moment before speaking. She could not hear her shiver beast nearby; clearly, he was following her father’s mandate by staying out of sight (and thus, mostly out of mind) for the time being. Finally, Erin spoke.

“Who are you?”

At first, there was no response. After a moment, though, he spoke. Whether Firaliel had threatened him or he had simply decided to speak after all was unknown. However, he did not have the tone of a man that was lying. Erin was certain that he was telling the truth, regardless of what had caused his apparent sincerity.

“Look…it was just a job, a’right? Nothin’ special. They said I could have all the steak an’ taters I wanted, plus enough gold to live comfortably for a year or more. All I was supposed to do was kill this guy - but he ended up being some protected noble or something. Then another group moved in outta nowhere an’ killed eeeeeverybody. They’d spare me, they said, if I helped ‘em get into town. So they made me steal this wagon, only I had ta kill somebody ta get it. I ain’t never killed no one in my life! So then I got ‘em into the city - the one nearby, see - and they robbed this old guy. I guess they must o’ killed ‘im, ‘cause they ran off an’ left me at the house. I ran, ‘cause I didn’t wanna be killed - only then the group I mentioned caught up with me. They said I could join their gang. I was s’scared, I didn’t refuse. Then they said they was gonna kill this elf that’s been causin’ them trouble - some dame that’s been takin’ down bandits or somethin’. Then we was here. I didn’t want no trouble, honest! Just lemme go, I won’t say nothin’!”

“So you’re poor?”

The man nodded but Erin couldn’t see him.

“Speak up, please.”

”Y-yeah…eh, I was, that is. Now I’m just…just lemme go, please.”

It sounded as though the man had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a coward, and now he was a murderer. Desperate times called for desperate measures, Erin supposed. Still, she didn’t plan on being anyone’s next target.

“And the man we found in the river…”

”Y-yeah, yeah. That was him. That was the guy! The…the wagon.,.guy…th-the guy with the wagon! That’s him! Please, I’m sorry, I’ll just go…lemme go…please…

The man trailed off. Erin felt sorry for him. He was just a guy who wanted something to eat, and he’d ended up being everyone else’s scapegoat. Erin pursed her lips and sighed. The question now, then, was what they were going to do with him. Would Firaliel let him go or punish him for his crimes? If it was up to her, he would serve the local town as a groundskeeper until the city was satisfied; he would be given a home at the local jail and three meals per day. But it was not up to her. He was Firaliel’s prisoner.

Erin asked him a simple question, to which the prisoner could have just answered with his name, but he started talking about what he'd done and why he'd done it. Based on what he said and his subsequent dialogue with Erin, Fira got the impression that he was poor and had just been doing what he needed to do to feed himself. Whether it was by bad luck or not knowing a better way, he'd ended up with the wrong group and was now on the wrong side of the law.

It appeared to be up to Firaliel what to do with this man. He'd done wrong, but as far as Fira could tell, he was telling the truth. Still, Fira didn't want to just let him go free, which would mean he'd be likely to wind up in the same situation. Fira wasn't going to kill him, but she didn't want him to get off completely free. Regardless of the circumstances, he was guilty of murder and theft.

Firaliel soon came to a decision. He would serve Fira and Erin in their quest to get to the bottom of what was going on here. After that, Fira would find him a place to work. If he was able to earn enough to live on, the temptation to return to a life of crime would be far less. Also, it would be best if he went to a different location, where the groups who knew him would not find him.

Fira said, "I'm not going to kill you, but I'm not going to just let you run off, either. You're going to help us get to the bottom of what's going on here. Do you understand?"
