Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Rienfleche, Knight of Ignasium, holder of the mystic blade Flamebringer, and brother to the Dark Knight of the realm. Basilikos, Dark Knight of Ignasium, Savior of the First Great War, and Traitor of Ignasium. These two knights were forced into constant conflict, both wishing for true peace, Rienfleche believed peace could be attained through the law and helping those in need, along with being merciful to his foes, while his brother believed peace could only be obtained through a single true king of the realm, he betrayed Ignasium after the first Great War and filled the seat of power in the enemy kingdom. Many times he was defeated by his brother, the only other Knight of the Realm. The two shared fighting styles, but the key difference was the weapons... the dark knight used only a normal blade, while Rien used the magic sword, Flamebringer, the legendary blade defeated him on each and every occasion... but his next plan would be different.

The land of Ignasium was at peace... Reinfleche was enjoying his day among the townsfolk, talking to old friends and even trying to recruit new blood for the Knights of Ignasium. It all happened far to fast, icicles started to rain down from the sky, slaying many of the townsfolk as Rein looked around frantically for the source... when he found it he growled in fury as he jumped into the air, the bronze colored tubes on his back spitting out a stream of fire, giving him flight. Rein started to draw his blade as a fight erupted in the skies, Rein and Basil were fighting once more... this time on even ground, magic sword to magic sword. Rein knew of the sword his brother was wielding, he had fought the enemy general that had one used the blade... but he had thought it lost, but now the blade of Armageddon and the Blade of Flames would clash again, the very blades would warp reality... and the victor would stand with both swords in hand.

It was a short fight, as soon as their blades crossed, the air shimmered around them, both of their jetpacks shot out flames, trying to win over the other, but it was all for naught... as the blades forced them to disappear from the world.

The two appeared again, clashing blades in the skies above the ruins of an ancient city in the mystical land of Imythess... but they had no time to wonder, they were in a duel to the death. They broke apart only to charge each other again... but the results were different this time, Basil spun to the side to dodge his brother's blade, shooting an icicle into the tubes on the back, stopping the flames, but it seemed Rein had some luck on his side, as his brother passed him he sliced the leather strap holding the jetpack to his brother's back. As Rein fell towards the ground, his brother lost control, barely hanging on to the tattered leather of his jetpack, flying away without his consent.

Rein landed heavily and groaned in pain... if this hadn't happened a lot during his training to use the jetpack he would have died... but for now he would stick to a few cracked ribs and falling unconscious. He let out a small groan as he faded into unconsciousness.

The skies were clear. There were clouds in the north and in the east, but the patch of air above the Celestial Iphemiel was bright blue. The air was crisp; it was still morning time, and a gentle frost still clung to the grass below, but the sun was warming the land as it steadily rose higher above the mountains. Zephyr allowed his wings to unfurl to their full span as he stretched a chilly stiffness out of his muscles, yawning as he did so. The winged archer was perched atop a rocky bluff that hung over a pile of forgotten ruins below. He had let himself sleep in this morning. He deserved it after nearly a full day of flying over the Debon Plains. He had been relieved to see the mountains the previous night; they had looked inviting as the most expensive bed in Cascadia to his sore eyes.

This morning, after nearly twelve hours of sleep, Zephyr Amarez was expecting a peaceful morning, a scavenged breakfast, followed by a much-shorter flight south to Istan, the feeling of warm desert sun kissing his shoulderblades and heating the plush white feathers on his wings. By the time he reached his next bed, a real bed, his wings would be a heated feathery bedsheet.

The Celestial was certainly not expecting a crack of thunder across the clear blue sky as a massive, swirling porthole opened above the city. Two small creatures, certainly humanoid, but certainly not human, came spiraling from the portal, locked blade-to-blade. Each of them wielded a flaming sword, and was clad in sleek steel armor, propelled through the sky by some fiery magic. Zephyr immediately strung his bow, Boreas and knocked an arrow, aiming at the dueling pair. He would fire a warning shot if he could. There was no need to injure either of them yet.

Just as he loosed his grip on his arrow, however, allowing the lightning magic to command it, something happened. One of the giant squirrels failed in his flight, suddenly plummeting like a stone; simultaneously, the brother sudden veered off course, rocketing to the east, towards the mountains and eventually, the sparkling sea. Zephyr's arrow sped by, unnoticed by either party, just as the first figure landed with a gruesome thump.

In a moment, he was off his feet and carried to the ground. As he landed, he folded his great wings behind him and crouched before the unconscious creature: some giant rodent in the shape of a man. The strange creature had a full set of expensive plate armor on and a strange metal device on his back. His sword lay inert on the ground, inches from his grasp. Zephyr set his left hand gently on the creature's back, willing holy energy to mend his cracked bones and bruises. He felt his tattoo burn brightly; it always shone more brightly when he used his Celestial abilities.

Rien felt something warm wash over his body... mystical energy that was repairing his damaged body. He slowly opened his eyes and sat up, he tapped his steel helmet and looked at the winged man, probably the one that healed him. He looked around for anyone else... but he couldn't see his brother, he stood up and picked up his blade as he spoke, "Thank you for doing... whatever it was that healed me. I am Reinfleche, Knight of Igna...sium..." Now that he actually looked around... he wasn't in his world anymore, he was about to panic when he remembered his duty as a knight... he needed to stay calm under pressure, gather information, and understand the situation.

He cleared his throat as he spoke to the winged man, "Ahem... I can pretty much tell from the sky and surroundings that I am not on my world anymore. It seems Ignasium is farther away than ever." The long ears that poked out of his helmet drooped, he already missed his home... but perhaps his work was done there, war would stop without his brother raising armies to fight Ignasium. With that thought his ears perked up a bit, but not by much, as he spoke, "Pray tell, where am I, and did you see my brother? Black armor, jetpack just like my own... but with a sword that shoots out ice?" He carefully sheathed his blade as he spoke, not wanting to seem like he's threatening his first meeting with a being from this new world.

It wasn't long after Zephyr's healing magic poured into the lifeless body, the little knight began to stir. Soon, his eyes flicked open and he clambered to his feet, retrieving his dropped weapon. The angel also rose to his full height; he nearly doubled the miniature swordsman. He nodded as Rienfleche introduced himself, and offered his own hand for a handshake. Regardless of whether the rodent took his hand, he would offer his own introduction. "Zephyr is my name; I am the Celestial, Iphemiel." He doubted the second part would mean anything to the lost knight; but it had merely become a custom of his greeting. He had been introduced to so many as "the Celestial, Iphemiel," he was more comfortable with it than his old mortal name.

The possum seemed to be lost. He was certainly not from Imythess, and judging by his appearance through the portal, Zephyr doubted the knight was even from this plane of existence. He didn't know how to help the poor thing, but he would try. "I've never heard of an Ignasium, I'm afraid," he spoke grimly. "You are currently standing on the soil of Imythess. Cascadia is to the north and west. Istan is to the south. I can take you to either one. As for Ignasium," he paused here, briefly. "I'm afraid I've never been."

The rodent knight shook the offered hand and listened to his new friend, Zephyr, it seems he was in a land called Imythess, one that had never even heard of Ignasium. He sighed as he started unbuckling the jetpack from his person, sliding it off onto the ground. He nodded to Zephyr as he started to look over his jetpack for damage, "Well I don't know either of those places... I've never heard of Imythess... but whichever place has lots of military power. That is where my brother will go to try and start a revolution, I need to stop him from plunging this world into war." His trained eyes could see small bits of ice inside the openings of the twin bismuth tubes, it was a small matter to scrape it out with his gauntlets.

He put the jetpack back on and buckled himself into it, giving it a few test starts, the flames sparked and sputtered a few times, which meant it only needed a few minutes to dry out. Rien sighed with relief, "It looks like my brother didn't damage my pack to badly, just some minor icing to stop me from flying. If you could show me the way to one of those places I would be very grateful." He stopped speaking as a loud shriek filled the air... followed by what seemed to be the laughter of women. A few feathers fell from the sky as he looked up, whatever was here could fly and was using the buildings for cover... this might not end to well.

Rien proceeded to pull the goggles, on top of his helmet, down over his eyes. He gave the mental command for the jetpack to start, and with a gout of flame it started back up and then went quiet as Rien spoke once again, "I don't know what manner of foul beast can imitate a woman's laugh and can fly... but they will not make a meal of me." He was ready to fight and the moment he would see the flying foe... he would take to the skies to fight them on equal footing.

Military power... Revolution. That all made sense. If Rienfleche's brother was savvy to the politics of Imythess, he might head to Balefire to start a revolution, but Zephyr guessed that both of them were new to the region. It would take time for the latter possum-knight to get a feel for the world. There was really no telling where Rienfleche's brother might end up. He was about to voice his concerns when he was interrupted by a sudden shriek. He didn't need to see their feathers falling around them to know the shriek immediately. Harpies were not rare near the mountains and the southeastern coastline. And they had a particular malice towards angels. There was no diplomatic way out of this conflict.

"Harpies," Zephyr muttered, and immediately, his bow was strung and an arrow was knocked. To his right, Rienfleche restarted his fiery flying machine and pulled his helmet over his face. With a strong leap, Zephyr took to the air, his enormous wings flapping mightily to carry him to the harpies' level with speed. The two were outnumbered; a band of somewhere between eight and twelve harpies circled above them. Some wielded cruel sabers and spears, others waved their arms in swooping arcane gestures. An arrow whizzed past, narrowly missing the Celestial's right wing as he climbed; two of the harpies were archers, evidently.

Carefully aiming, Zephyr let his first arrow fly, piercing the chest of one of the magic-wielders. The creature crumpled and dropped like a stone, her magic fizzling out. Zephyr was surrounded at all angels by the vicious bird-women. Feathers rained down below as they flapped their gray and brown wings gracefully. Their feet were taloned claws. Their hands were large and gnarled. Their facial features were sharp and pointed, like beaks, and they had beady, narrow eyes. Their hair was curly and tangled, mostly brown and black, sticking up at odd angles. And there were a lot of them.

"Let's hope that flying-machine doesn't fail you again," Zephyr called to Rienfleche as he knocked a second arrow, this time encasing it in elemental lightning.

He heard Zephyr call the beasts harpies... and as soon as they came into sight, Rien could feel the hatred from the beasts. Some of them were making odd gestures in the sky... until Zephyr put an arrow into one of the weaponless harpies, slaying her instantly. When he made the comment about his jetpack, Rien grinned as it sparked to life, sending Rien into the sky at high speeds, he started to draw his longsword as he passed by a harpy, delivering a quick slash at her wing, severing it from her form. Rien didn't watch as the harpy fell and instead charged the next one, twisting sharply to send a gout of flames into another harpy's face.

He grinned as he flew circles around them, while they had control, he had speed, more than enough to overwhelm them. He kept on delivering quick slashes as he zipped by them, twisting his body and shifting his weight to change direction, the flames from his jetpack were dangerous and kept his back covered, the harpies would be overwhelmed at this rate, and Rienfleche could taste victory.

Zephyr laughed as he loosed his second arrow, watching it explode violently into the wing of another harpy, sending her plummeting lethally to the ground, her wings completely paralyzed by the powerful jolt of electricity he sent through her. At this rate, the harpies would be thinned out and eliminated easily between the two of them. The Celestial had enough experience dealing with them that harpies were, at best, a nuisance to him, though he had never encountered a mob of them quite this large before. Especially not so near a human settlement. It was concerning.

He watched Rienfleche battle back the winged monstrosities with agility and ease. He was fast in the air, and even faster with a blade, quickly dispatching many of the baked foes without so much as breaking a sweat. Zephyr was battling admirably despite his slight fatigue, throwing bolts of lightning between the arrows he fired and savagely grounding foe after flighted foe. While in the skies, the winds were at the Celestial's command; it was foolish to challenge an anemoi, a Celestial wind spirit, to a sky-battle, for the air was malleable putty in the hands of Zephyr Amarez.

As harpies dropped crippled to the ground, one creature circled unseen high above. This one was far more ancient than any of the beings who did battle below him. Though he had massive, powerful wings, he was neither harpy nor angel. He was an enormous leviathan, a centuries-old drake, far more intelligent than others of his kind, if only for his incredible age. This drake, an enormous dark-blue winged lizard, was a god to the harpies beneath him. They worshiped the mighty creature and named him their King, and he acted as their general in warfare. He would not stand to watch so many of his subjects killed. Not so pathetically, so he slowly descended in his circling, his ancient, unblinking eyes set on the angel and the possum. They were indeed powerful, defeating so many of his children so easily, but they would stand no match against a thunder drake larger than an elephant.

Rien couldn't help but grin as they easily dispatched most of the harpies, only a few arrows hit his armored body, but did no noticeable damage. That was when he noticed a massive shadow pass over them... and he looked up to see the thunder drake, a beast he had never encountered before. He turned his body around before striking another harpy, the flames catching it on fire as he shot back towards his ally. He moved his body as if he was standing, the flames keeping him hovering next to Zephyr as he spoke, "What is that thing!? It's as big as the sea serpent from the castle moat! Zephyr, how are you supposed to kill that... thing!?"

The drake struck with a flash of lightning breath, with a short squeak of surprise, Rien shot upwards, his tail and boots getting a nasty shock from beast's lightning breath. He shook off the pain as he corrected his flight, charging the beast from above, swerving to the side to avoid the head. His passing slash barely pierced the scales, causing an extremely shallow cut. Rien began to grind his teeth as he spun around, staring at the beast as he tried to desperately think of a new way to fight the beast.

The angel tried to remain calm as the leviathan circled downwards upon them. Clearly this beast was not on his side, as it let out a burst of lightning from its mouth, breathing a bright-blue shockwave onto Rienfleche. Zephyr winced empathetically for the knight, and he was fast to knock another arrow. It was no use, though, not against the drake, as there was no way he would get a clear shot at the creature's underside while it was engaged with his ally.

"Slash at its face and its belly, Rienfleche." The Celestial spoke calmly despite the circumstances. His voice was smooth and rich, but beneath the facade of an inspiring demeanor was the undetectable quaver of uncertainty. It was possible he was in too deep. He drew back on his bowstring, aiming gently for the drake's eyes as it rounded again, letting out a second blast of blue lightning at the possum. He released his grip on the weapon, but it was no good. The arrow, even empowered as it was with freezing energy, shattered and bounced harmlessly off of the thick crust of the monster's scaly hide. The leviathan did not even bat an eyelash.

It was clear Zephyr's arrows would be no use against the monstrous drake, but there was still a host of harpies closing in. They seemed suddenly invigorated with renewed morale thanks to the appearance of their reptilian God. An arrow pierced the gut of an especially smug-looking harpie and she crumpled instantly, plummeting to the ground like a stone. The angel snorted derisively as he watched the creature fall. As he fired arrow after arrow into the fray, it seemed the harpies were more interested in stopping the winged archer, the one whose arrows seemed to efficiently clip their wings and send them sprawling immobilized to the ground if not kill them outright. Clearly the rodent was more then enough to handle for their dragon-king, so they were not concerned with protecting the leviathan, instead choosing to following the Celestial through the sky as he deftly floated away from them, still firing volleys of enchanted arrows at the brown and gray clump of feathered pursuers.

Although the harpies were slow and clumsy, Zephyr's attention was divided. Not only was he firing arrows into the enemies, but he was influencing the battlefield in a more subtle way. The wind seemed to always favor Rienfleche and Zephyr in this melee. It blew hard against their enemies, the harpies and the drake, while supporting them in their own maneuvers. The angel's arrows struck twice as hard and twice as true, guided by the fierce gales he commanded. So long as he could maintain the terrain advantage, he had a feeling they might be alright.

Rein heard his ally's advice and quickly went into action, giving the command for full speed on his jetpack. He breezed by the beast's face, leaving a long angry crimson streak of blood across his face. A quick twist of his body sent him under it's stomach, he began to rapidly spin, holding his sword out to slash the body as he went by, leaving several wound's on the opponents belly. The beast let out a mighty roar, calling the harpies to protect him, but Rien was far from done. He circled around, using the harpies as a shield whenever the beast tried to breath lightning or swipe with his claws, forcing him to stop, unless he wanted to hit his allies.

As he went around, Rien sliced more wings and claws until he saw his next chance, another dive and he buried his sword into the drake's eye. The drake howled, letting out a burst of lightning in his pain. Rien laughed as he zipped around, dodging raking claws, thrusting spears, swiping blades, he was used to fighting armies of foes with massive metal shells, these enemies were fighting with so many weak points. He would continue to whittle away at his foes until they retreated or could no longer fight.

Zephyr wasted no time; once the drake howled, its eyeball gouged out, it turned on its side, and immediately exposed a massive fault. Its belly was oozing blood, already slashed up by Rienfleche's blade, he could see. He quickly drew back an arrow, allowing the enchantments of his bow and the arrow itself to flow into the razor-sharp arrowhead. As he let it fly, he called on the wind to guide the arrow, and aided by a powerful gust of wind, the shaft hit its mark hard. The beast bellowed a second time, suddenly paralyzed by a massive electrical shock, and it began to descend in its flight, its wings moving slowly. The Celestial could see from his position that the arrow was iced firmly into place, having frozen the surrounded flesh. As it slowly dropped towards the ground, grunting with effort to keep its plummet steady, its midsection writhed back and forth, trying to dislodge the arrow.

Rien spun and flipped in the air as the beast started to fall towards the ground. He saw his ally fire another arrow, he took it as a means to weaken to scales with ice. He began his sharp dive, but saw a much more appealing target... his wings were under a lot of stress trying to keep it aloft. He brought his entire diving body into the sword's slash, shearing through the joint and sending himself, and the dragon, spiraling towards the ground. He could barely twist his body enough to pull up just before hitting the ground, he was quite literally, only a few inches away while he continued his flight, slowly gaining height until he could twist his entire body once again, flying straight up into the air.

Rien looked back towards the ground, the drake was motionless and blood was pooling around it, the harpies had started to beat a hasty retreat. Rien flew back to his ally and began to hover beside him, "'Twas truly an honor to fight beside you my friend and it seems we took care of a great many evil creatures. We don't have beasts like this back in Ignasium, it was most exciting!" His breathing became heavy as he started to recover, flight wasn't to physical, but the mental strain tired him, it took a lot of guts to fly around on a jetpack that could turn off just from minor icing problems.

"And you, Rienfleche," Zephyr spoke calmly as he slowed the fluttering of his mighty wings. His voice had maintained its steady, lofty timbre through the encounter, and still now, he seemed unfazed, even by the bloodshed the pair had caused. He watched the horizon carefully, shadowed by a swarm of harpies fleeing towards the ocean in a flurry of feathers and frightened, haglike squawking. It had been necessary bloodshed, no doubt.

Returning to the ground, he folded his wings behind him and carefully unstrung his bow. The ground around them was littered with harpy corpses, and the motionless body of the great thunder drake lay in a pool of deep scarlet blood. "What sort of land is Ignasium?" the Celestial probed, walking away from the battle scene. He didn't care to investigate the carnage he and Rien had created.

Rien began to descend with Zephyr, landing beside him so he could take in what damage they had done. A horde of harpies and a terrible thunder drake lay before them, dead. Rien turned when he heard Zephyr start walking, he scrambled after him and walked beside him. The man's question made Rien smile, he loved his homeland, perhaps he could find the words to properly describe the place to his new friend. Rien cleared his throat before speaking, "Ignasium is a place filled with peaceful folk who wish for peace and prosperity. The land is green and filled with the laughter of children. There are no monsters or wild beasts that run around like those harpies or that thunder monster, instead we have rival countries who have gone to war with us. They used massive metal men and wreak havoc across the land, leaving several smaller countries nothing more than blackened husk... but not Ignasium. Ignasium has people like me, Rocket Knights, we are the first line of defense, sent out to stall the enemy until reinforcements arrive."

Some may call it being part of a suicide troop, but he had survived several wars and come out alive, even pushing hard enough to turn the tides of war and invade the enemy country. He began recounting the wildlife, the lush grass, the peaceful dinosaurs, the humble cabal of wizards that worked for the king, even the King himself in all his wisdom was included. Finally Rien spoke about something with a bit more passion, "We also have a princess, her beauty can't even be compared to dawn or the setting sun. Gem stones pale in comparison, I saved her life during several skirmishes and during a war or two. I've been her escort multiple times during her ride abouts in the grasslands. When she takes the thrown she plans for many changes, I had hoped to be there for them... but it seems unlikely now." He had no idea how this world work, or even if it went by the same time, ten seconds here could be ten years over in Ignasium... he wouldn't know until he finds a portal back home.
