| Keelin Madaricatu |
|---|
 | General Information Gender: Female Species: Planescarred Mountain Elf - Keelin's physiology has been permanently modified by traumatic exposure to magical energies from Celestia. Age: 112 years Nationality: Gwilikith Mountains Affiliation: Ivory League Languages Known: <Elvish> (Native), Celestial (Fluent), Common (Fluent), Gnomish (Beginner)
Class: Angel Hunter, Monk Occupation: League Intelligence Service (LIS) agent. Part of the Division of Extraplanar Defense. Not the most subtle of spies.
Primary Element: Holy Secondary Element: Air |
Physical Description
Height: 5'9" Build: Lacks the stereotypical elven litheness. Wide hips, full in the bust and thighs, dense muscle beneath a healthy layer of fat. Hair: Dyed a dark auburn (naturally black), extends a few inches past shoulders, shaggy, sometimes tied into a loose low ponytail with a white strip of cloth. Eyes: Left eye is light brown. Right eye is covered with an eyepatch surrounded by nasty scars. Removing the eyepatch reveals an eye made of solid light. Skin: Sun-tanned
Plane-Scars: (See Planescarred for more information). Keelin's plane-scars are mostly internal, but become physical changes when she releases a large amount of power. The gashes on her face glow gold, and the light emanated by her false right eye is substantially greater. She develops a halo made of constantly churning liquid light. The surgical scars on her torso and back flower outward, becoming densely packed runic lines running across the majority of her body. Other plane-scars have yet to be revealed.
Common Attire: Travel-worn, durable attire. Dark grey wide-brimmed hat. Grey longcoat made of tanned hide. Beneath it are darker trousers over work boots. Long-sleeved button-down shirt. Incongruent with all of this is a long, thick stole with runic patterns embroidered into it which she wears either double-looped around her neck like a scarf (loosely around her shoulders or tightly around her neck) or tied around her hips like a sash. All her clothes reek of smoke. Travels light and has few personal possessions. Looks kind of like a fancy bum.
Identifying Marks: For most prominent identifier, see Eyes. Also has a pair of short triangular ears that poke out from her hair and give away her species. Her Radiant emanation points are also distinct.
Physical Mannerisms: In many situations, Keelin is expressive both in the face and in her body language. Smokes cigars. Her movements are easy and casual, but gets almost theatrical when excited. Speaks with a breezy Elvish accent.
Overview of Personality
Rough Overview: Whether through life-changing events or probing conversations, Keelin's worldview is challenged more often than most. Her personality is conflicted. She is very image-conscious, and the type of person she tries to come across as stands in stark contrast to the person she really is. Many of her personality traits she intentionally cultivated as a way of changing herself from the outside in. This is why she no longer has a personality description. Maybe you should RP with her and develop your own view of her personality!
Fighting Style: A battle-mage capable of both physical combat and spellcasting. She's not a master of either, but makes up for her lack of specialization by effectively combining the two. Keelin has not been fighting live combat for very long relative to her age (only about a decade) but seems to enjoy it for some reason, even if she is losing. She is proficient in offensive holy and light magic. She admits that her magic probably comes from Celestia in some form or another, but merely finds this fact amusing ("It's like I'm beating them to death with their own weapons. How humiliating that must be!").
It's also worthwhile to mention that Keelin rarely finds the desire to go all-out when she isn't fighting something celestial. She really dislikes fighting demons because she finds them to be scum that isn't worth her time or mana. If forced to fight demons, Keelin prefers to end the fight quickly and without using her hook-swords.
Miscellaneous Notes:
- Really protective of kids. Gets a special sort of enraged when children are put in danger.
- As terrified of experimentation on sapients as she is outraged by it. It's not her only fear, of course, just the most readily apparent. A lot of her hallucinations revolve around this subject.
- Keelin's most oft-used psychological defense mechanism, especially in response to fear, is emotionally shutting down. She loses expressiveness, wears a blank face, and speaks in a monotone.
- Well-read and is particularly versed in the workings of Celestia. Clearly more educated than her outward appearance and low-brow speaking style might suggest.
- Keelin is afraid of golems and doesn't quite get how they work. She's distrustful of arcanotech in general.
- Keelin's worst fear is surgeries, especially undergoing surgery herself.
- Enjoys singing, but only when she's alone. She's a decent singer. Likes to learn folk songs from places she's visited.
- As an Immaculate of Discipline, Keelin is incapable of getting drunk or addicted to substances. The only exception is the Peculiar Piquant liquor owned by Hearne. It's classified as a toxin, but works like a charm on Keelin. When drunk, Keelin speaks in extremely formal Elvish, is very polite, and talks a lot.
- In a bit of contrast to the rough-and-tough way of presenting herself most of the time, Keelin is really naive about carnal subjects to a point that borders obliviousness. She doesn't understand most innuendo, never cracks dirty jokes (unless it's an accident, in which case she'd be confused with all the people laughing), and has a poor understanding of the business industries surrounding these matters.
Background Information
Keelin's Prey: It is important to note that Keelin is not genocidal. Her goal isn't to eliminate all Celestials -- that would be ridiculous and unrealistic. Keelin wants to push Celestial interests out of Chaon. Most importantly, she wants Celestials to stop using Chaon as a resource or tool.
"Will Keelin Hunt Them?" FAQ: Note that these are not the sentiments that Keelin has always held. She's made a lot of progress away from broad-scale hatred and is now focusing her efforts on the most meddlesome Celestials.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Keelin's beef is with Celestia. Her motivation isn't based on some weird fantastical racism thing. It's a matter of freedom.
Will Keelin hunt...
- ...Risen demons? Yes.
- ...Fallen angels? No.
- ...Angels that aren't of Celestia, such as ones born in Chaon? Maybe. Depends on their attitudes toward Celestia.
- ...Aasimar or others with Celestial ancestry? Maybe. Depends on their attitudes toward Celestia.
- ...Albinos or other people with vaguely angelic appearance? No.
- ...Celestial exiles who are just trying to live a normal life in Chaon? No.
- ...Celestial exiles who were released into Chaon because Celestia didn't want to deal with them (e.g. for being too extremist)? Yes.
- ...Angels who are trying to help people in Chaon? No, if their sentiments are genuine and the Chaonites are fine with it.
- ...Non-combatants such as angel offspring? No.

The Story So Far
OUTDATED: Last updated back in October 2013, but still provides an okay summary of the fundamentals of Keelin's plot.
This is meant to give a comprehensive, chronological summary of Keelin's personal story. Despite this convenience now existing, the ideal way I'd love people to learn about her personal story is by reading Recovered Dispatches from Dagisoi Monastery in the order entries are posted. This is because a huge aspect of Keelin's plot is about piecing together bits and pieces of information in a world of uncertainty, deception, and hidden complexity.
Therefore, this infodump summary only exists to give a quick overview of basic plot points. Like the Dispatches, this summary only includes information that Keelin herself knows. She's still trying to fill gaps in the picture.
What exactly was Dagisoi Monastery and the project surrounding it? "This is more than just breeding religious elves on the top of a mountain."
Dagisoi Monastery
This remote monastery complex appeared roughly two-hundred years ago on the mountain Halavanthlarr, in the Gwilikith range. It was a large, walled area near the summit which provided all necessary amenities to survive. The elves that populated the monastery were devout followers of the Forward Path religion and had minimal interaction with the outside world.
Basically, the monastery was a closed system; emigration was forbidden, and births came from the intricate intermingling of families and clans of monks. Every aspect of this design was intentional. The residents of the monastery knew that the heavenly Stewards watched over them in a protective sense, but they had no idea the real nature of things. In truth, Dagisoi Monastery was a long-term study conducted by angels. Due to the nature of the angels' research goals, the study had both observational and experimental components and was likely testing multiple working hypotheses at once. Keelin was a member of the 6th and last "cohort," or generation of births at Dagisoi.
About ten years ago, an outbreak of demonic mutations began killing Dagisoi monks at a shocking rate. Despite creative interpretations, the illness was indiscriminate. Social and familial cohesion was badly shaken. When it became clear that no one was going to survive, the Celestial coordinators of the project humanely exterminated everyone, putting sufferers out of their misery. Keelin, who was never affected by the mutations, was spared. When the angels attempted to capture her, she escaped into the mountains.
For years Keelin sought the reason why angels would expose elves to demonic corruption. One of her information brokers discovered some field notes that turned out to be a key piece of the puzzle. These notes documented the installation of various demonic artifacts in the caverns beneath the monastery -- artifacts that inherently gave off various levels of ambient corruption. This corruption seeped into the land and water supply of the complex, thereby exposing resident monks to compounding levels of corruption. It can be inferred that ten years ago, the level of corruption rose to such a great level that it was actively mutating living things and killing those with a holy predisposition.
To learn about what Dagisoi is like nowadays, go to the spoiler marked "What new information has been gleaned just recently?"
Why do some angels consider Keelin so important? "For as long as Keelin Madaricatu lives, the Dagisoi project has not ended."
The Saint-Apostate
When Keelin was trying to discern the reason why angels would embark on such a clearly immoral research project, she reasoned that they would need a motivation that outweighed the costs. In other words, the potential good that could come from obtaining an answer to their research question(s) would far outweigh the suffering of so many elves. The answer dawned on her during one of her re-visits to the ruins of the monastery. She realized that she had been looking in the wrong place the whole time; she could glean the answer from herself.
Keelin is completely immune to physiological demon corruption. That means that by Celestia's broadest definition, she is infallible.
This is why the angels spared her life during the cleaning of Dagisoi, and why she was never affected by the corruption in the first place. The ability to venture into some of the most tainted landscapes and come out unscathed was considered the single most valuable outcome of generations of close observation and manipulation at Dagisoi. Looking at this pragmatically, this makes sense: if Celestia could find a way to give its soldiers physiological infallibility, they could send their troops deep into enemy territory without worrying about falling. It would be a huge trump card in the war between Celestia and the Abyss. Elves, being immortal, were an excellent model system to use -- an analogue to angels. Simply experimenting on other angels was likely considered too ethically questionable. Studying elves was important, presumably to isolate the mechanism behind Keelin's infallibility.
But that's the problem. No one knows why Keelin is infallible. She seems to have no conscious control over this special ability, nor has she lost it since renouncing her religion. It has persisted even in spite of Keelin's active rebellion against her Immaculate status through hedonism and debauchery. (Though it's currently a point of debate whether Keelin has actually changed or is simply posturing). Keelin herself has slowed research progress by not allowing herself to be captured and studied, and this suits her just fine. In fact, Keelin would have gladly killed herself to put a stop to the inquiry permanently. Except she knows that wouldn't really accomplish things. She knows she needs to stand up and do something about this. Rather than temporarily delaying research, she wants to do everything she can with her knowledge, abilities and experience to stop future experimentation and, ideally, push Celestial interests out of Chaon altogether.
What new information has been gleaned just recently? The Story So Far
Nowadays, Dagisoi is the epicenter of a horrifically corrupted landscape consisting of Halavanthlarr and the surrounding ridge. This spreading demonic blight is a scar on the landscape. Every living thing is warped, deadly, and starving for pure flesh. Nevertheless, Keelin makes an annual pilgrimage to the monastery whenever it's logistically feasible. She spends a couple weeks there maintaining her graveyard, cleaning up the grounds, and repairing breaches to her demon-expelling wards and barriers. She recently visited Dagisoi and discovered that there appear to be "leaks" in the angel-made barriers that kept the corruption from spreading too far away from localized Dagisoi. Keelin has slowed the spread for now, but is searching for a more permanent solution. Ideally, she would like to discover a way to purify ambient demon corruption and make the area habitable again.
Keelin is slowly learning about the political implications of her existence. Since the Dagisoi project was an international effort, multiple Celestial societies are vying for the rights to capture her. A wild card has appeared in the form of Calchaem, one of the principal researchers during the project and the overseer of sylvan resources back then. Calchaem has proven to be obsessive about Keelin, even to the point of deceiving Celestial governments and keeping aspects of his research under lock and key. He has hinted in his interactions with her that multiple factions are at play, and the situation surrounding her is more complex than she likely thinks it is. While he's willing to offer information, it often comes with a catch that puts Keelin in an unnerving dilemma.

Badges - Keelin Madaricatu
The following describes how Keelin obtained her IC achievements. See the badge guide for original badge descriptions and requirements for obtaining.
Vindicator's Badge In The Devil in the Details, Keelin and several other Player Characters team up to take down Lumeaphon, the Demon-Eater, an angel who was imprisoned underneath the caverns of Dagisoi Monastery for years before finally going insane and falling against his will.
Bloodstained Badge Keelin was captured by the International Council for the Advancement of Demonic Understanding (ICADU), planescarred intentionally through several surgeries, was killed and resurrected four times, and almost successfully converted into a pseudo-Celestial. Because she received help from the inside, Keelin managed to escape before the most invasive surgeries were performed, but was left crippled and half-dead upon arrival in Chaon. It took her several weeks to recover to a somewhat functional state.
Badge of the Tattered Veil Keelin's personal story is built on worldview-bending reveals. Here are a few, listed in chronological order:
- Keelin's whole early life at Dagisoi Monastery was an elaborate experimental simulation in which every aspect of her life was scrutinized.
- Keelin is immune to ambient demonblight.
- The Dagisoi experiments never ended. Keelin was still being monitored heavily after the monastery was purged. They let her escape and allowed her to hunt angels. Some events in her life were put in place intentionally by angelic researchers.
- The other elves at Dagisoi Monastery were never killed. Their bodies and souls were placed in stasis separately and stored in the ICADU facility.
- Some of the Immaculates at Dagisoi Monastery were spirited away from Dagisoi Monastery and spared from the purge in return for their loyalty and service to ICADU.
- The Immaculate status cannot be removed.
- The Forward Path religion was hijacked by Celestials. Immaculates were against Vicraeus' original intentions when he pioneered the faith.
Entertainer Badge Keelin has participated in a couple tournaments. Got her ass kicked most of the time, did a little bit of ass-kicking herself.
Lover's Badge Keelin guards what few secrets she has with utmost jealousy and care.
Hoplite's Badge, Journeyman's Badge, Badge of the Prolific Keelin has been in a lot of IC topics.
