"Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole. I thank whatever gods may be, For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul." The words echoed through the caverns deep in the Dragon Spine Mountains, followed by the loud roaring and grinding of stone against stone. From the door that openend in the mountainside a figure arose, the nobility with wich he carried himself almost visable from afar. Clad in white clothing that gently wavered in the nights breeze together with his hair as he looked out over the valley beneath. His deep crimson eyes pushed the paleness of his skin aside everytime the moonlight faded away behind a cloud. Kadis had just awoken from hundreds of years of slumber. The Dragon Spine Mountains were the perfect place to do so. Its narrow valleys and treacherous passes made it one of the most dangerous areas to be in. Terrorized by snowstorms, other weatherly conditions or the lack of food and shelter were all strong enough to walk away with your soul. And even if the rugged terrain let you live, it's predators would not. Only the strongest could survive in these conditions and with that the terms of his peace were set. Although a peacefull slumber was out of the question now. The uneasy feeling that had creeped up on him between the white wood that had enclosed him for so long had only grown stronger as he stepped out of his tomb. The wind carried a mix of blood and steel deep into the mountains. Somehow, the approaching war would not let him sleep. |

Allison Balan threw herself off Bohumir's back split-seconds before his heavy body would have crushed her against the side of the mountain. She hit the bare rock, hard, and fell like a ragdoll down a short but steep drop. Only when she hit a stretch of flat ground did her body finally stop moving, remaining there for several seconds as a lifeless lump of black steel covered by a thick fur-lined cloak. The knight softly groaned and pushed herself up to her feet. The blood drained from her face when she saw the view. The ice elementals' attack had forced them to crash-land a long, long way from where she needed to be. The clattering of claws against rock made Balan turn. Her steed Bohumir, an ancient wyvern clad in fur-lined black steel barding, was slowly climbing down to where she was. Dark blue ice clung to one of his wings like an infection, making every step look painful. He descended to her level -- which she now realized was an old path through the mountain -- and regarded her with intensely blue eyes that reflected the moonlight. As if asking her what they were to do now. Allison wasn't sure. Looking around in the darkness, she drew her heavy cloak close around her black armor to stave off the biting wind. If Bohumir couldn't fly, they at least needed to find a place where they weren't so exposed. However, it looked like there might be some kind of alcove or cave just up the path, if Allison's night vision wasn't failing her. It was worth a shot. She led the way, breathing visible puffs of vapor through the grate of her helm's visor. Only a few minutes into their chilly hike, Bohumir suddenly stopped. Balan turned and saw the wyvern stock still, neck arched, lips pulled back into a snarl. They could see the end of the path, now, and what the knight had thought was an alcove actually had a door on it. A figure in white stood just in front, though she couldn't make out any details from this distance. Propping one plated hand on the hilt of her sheathed sword, she proceeded cautiously up the path. |

For minutes Kadis had just stood there, breathing in large pockets of air through his nose before letting it escape through his mouth. His thoughts running violently through his head, bickering over how he had awoken while his strength had not returned and more importantly, the precise reason of the abrupt stop to his sleep. The loud screech that broke the silent blanket that covered the night drew his attention to closer matters. The following noize was quite obvious to understand, although it was only speculation as to what was really going on. It was definiately not a dragon that had made the cry, he heared enough of those in the vicinity to distinguish them from other creatures. The sound of small rocks and stones rolling down the path made him turn sideways. Someone or something had dared to roam around in these parts and with his strength not notable enough to put up a decent fight it was only natural that his sight and hearing were the only things he could rely on. With caution he tredded a few steps toward the path, the figure of a woman clad in armor emerging from the night. A creature followed a small distance behind her, its wing seized by the cold ice and impairing its movement with every step. "You enter my domain with a hand on your weapon? Do you intend to slay me". His feet stopped at the edge of the path as his head slightly tiled backwards, the tone of his voice not losing to the cold of the night itself. His eyes piercing down at the woman. |

Allison stopped walking, letting the figure speak. She shivered under her armor. Her answer came quickly. "Forgive me. We were wounded and driven far from the front. I had grown too accustomed to the sight of enemies." Her plated hand dropped from the pommel of her sword; the heavy fur cloak flowed over her arm to cover it again. "My name is Sir Allison Balan, representative of the House Balan of Taras. Do you know what this place is, sir? We were searching for shelter from the cold." Clearly this man in white wasn't much at all affected by the icy wind, making her suspect he at the very least was not human. "Pardon my rudeness, but may I ask your name? I wasn't expecting to meet another soul in such a remote location." Bohumir hobbled up the path, closer, but remained wary of the other person. The wyvern never did like strangers, Balan mused. |

"It is forgiven, sir Balan" His left arm and hand gracefully waved sideways to invite her further up the plateau. A charming smile, followed by the small bow revealed for as good and bad as it could he had no ill intensions. Without a doubt his smile had shown her the fangs that took their place behind his upper lip. In the same fluent line his arm had made he turned around and walked towards the door before turning to face Allison. The title of sir before her name aswell as the reference to the House of Balan had given him enough information to asume she had a noble background. "My name is Kadis E. Loyarde. And this is.. This is my tomb. No, I think sleeping chamber would tred closer to it's true purpose." Explaining his own noble background or the affiliation with the throne would not matter, his family would all but be alive and the crown already be placed on other names. "I suggest a trade, Lady Balan, you may rest inside if you give me the whole story about the stirrings beyond the mountains that awoke me." |

Realization dawned on Allison, first due to the clear baring of fangs and then to Kadis' own admission that he had just emerged from his tomb. It all made sense: this man was a vampire, and probably an ancient one at that. Bohumir had good reason to be upset. The knight hesitated, considering her options. It was the middle of the night, she didn't know exactly where she was, and it was absolutely freezing out here. This vampire's tomb looked like the only shelter for miles, especially since Bohumir couldn't fly. What other option did she have but spend the rest of the night in the company of a vampire? She took a breath. "Alright. Bohumir, it looks sheltered enough for you right here. I'll be right inside the door. Okay?" The large reptile responded with a snort of warm air, which she interpreted as begrudging acceptance. Upon entering the tomb, Balan's first instinct was to reach for the straps keeping her armet on her head, but quickly thought against it. Better to keep some metal between herself and this vampire's fangs, just in case he decided to stop being so polite -- or if he was hungry. The knight settled a bit uneasily into a sitting position with her back against the stone wall of the tomb, one hand resting on her knee. It was still dark and cold in here, but a huge improvement over the biting wind outside. "I'm serving as a member of the Army of Imythess, a united military with members from most all the city-states in the land. We march to oppose the invasion of a foreign army. I-I'm not sure how that could have awoke you, mister Loyarde. Does the smell of blood travel that far?" |

Their footsteps resounded through the hall as they left the wyvern outside the door, it took about half a minute in a straight line untill they entered a large rectangular room. The coffin at the far side about the only notable thing inside it. Now, only the howling of the wind could be heared in the background. As the story of war unfolded, Kadis walked up and down the room, carefully listening to her words. "The smell of blood you say?" A faint smile flashed across his face. "Truth be said, I can't deny that blood has a strong hold over my kind but I dont think that is the full reason I awoke. I've been connected with these lands and my kin for far longer than you can imagine, even in my sleep I can somewhat feel their thoughts, yet, in the end, I should not have awoken at all. This was supposed to be an eternal slumber." Clearly troubled, Kadis stared at the end of the hallway that led outside. After a few minutes of not being able to come up with a good explanation as to what broke his sleep he continued the conversation on a whole other note. "Do not worry about my desire for blood, I have..." The brief pauze Kadis took to turn around to his guest was filled with the search for the right word. "I have adapted to a less murderous method. Being hunted for so many years makes one very resourcefull" A faint sparkle behind the red of his eyes together with a small curl in his lips as he spoke the last sentence gave away a fond memory being recalled. "So, how are we doing in this war?" |
