Since Nkiruka knew it was fairly likely they were all going to die in the next operation, she thought it best to take a vacation. Her subordinates were convinced it was the worst idea she had ever had. Even on the walk up to the airship tower, dressed in civilian clothes, she had attracted a small following of five or six officers trying to get her final approval for security actions, signing last-minute paperwork, informing her of Rainfall movements and making decisions about certain troop placements. She dully rattled off answers and confirmations on the way to the tower, but once they got to the ticket desk her grumbling cooperation swiftly turned to dismissal. "Just take whatever you need to Colonels Hosker and Korzul. They're not that scary."

"Ma'am, we simply wanted to utilize the remaining time you had--"
"Are you sure this is a prudent decision, Major?"

"Of course it's not. Do I look like I care?" she growled while exchanging a handful of crowns for an airship ticket. Shiny silverish metal peeked out from under her gloved right hand, but she quickly tugged the cloth back into place and gave the other officers a severe stare. "Please just let me do this."

Some were quick with their "yes, ma'am" or "of course, ma'am," but others remained quiet while she disappeared up the stairs of the airship tower. They were probably simmering about how selfish she was being. And Nkiruka was being selfish. Five days was a long time. Lots of chances for people to die, or Rainfall to mobilize, or riots to start... the soldier gritted her teeth, assuring herself none of that would happen. She put her command in good hands, and Chaitaki was probably still gravely injured after what happened with Zaki in Axerise. It would take a whole lot more than a five-day vacation for the insurgency's leader to recover from all those stab wounds.

She emerged onto the airship tower's flat top: the highest in a multi-level structure. Nkiruka had passed a multitude of airships both large and small, ready to take civilians all across the continent's flourishing network. Standing on the open top of the tower provided an amazing view of Istan City, but Nkiruka ignored it as soon as she spotted Zaki already standing on the platform waiting. Trying to hide the unfortunate mix of negative emotions from showing on her face -- and failing -- Nkiruka marched purposefully up to her favorite person. She pushed past the thin crowd of people. Then, without a word, the soldier rose up onto the tips of her toes, put a hand on the back of Zaki's head and pressed her lips against the veteran's. Despite Nkiruka's attempts to calm down, the greeting still came off as a bit more forceful than she would have liked. She looked away sheepishly, pretending to admire the view of the Ivory Palace or something silly like that. "Sorry I'm late. They wouldn't stop hassling me all the way up to the tower." She took a deep breath. "Let's get this over with."

Zakiyyah the Kestrel, the Steel Tower of Istan, sifted around through her stockpile of clothing, planting whatever she had that was fit for a vacation into a freshly cleaned and dried armor bag. Most of it was tremendously old, before from when she'd joined the army. Reika peered into the room.

"I did say you should go out shopping, Zakiyyah. Most of those clothes are a decade old, dear." Reika said.

"This was kind of short notice, mom. The tailors are swamped enough trying to get their orders through for the festivals." Zaki replied. Reika shrugged and walked away. She looked at the disturbingly small and almost definitely ill fitting pile of clothes and then added a sewing kit and a whole roll of bandages nabbed from the supply room. It would be enough, plus she'd probably get to mess around with making up some clothes from scratch. Zaki chuckled and sorted the bag, leaving behind her armor and weapons. It would be nice to travel without being armed to the teeth for once. She hefted the surprisingly light bag on her shoulder and strolled out of the monastery, waving at her mother as she lead a group of young girls through a discipline exercise. It was good to be home.

Zaki smiled as she spotted Nkiruka on the roof of the airship aerie. The wind played with the folds of her sundress, sending ripples through the bright hibiscus flowers covering the dress. She pinned her wide brimmed straw hat on her head with one hand as Inky approached. The soldier gave no greeting other than a quick kiss which had Zaki's smile widen until she was beaming. She removed her hand from her hat and lifted Inky up, hugging her close and spinning on her heels. The veteran giggled, her golden marking flashing in the sunlight.

"I'm so happy! Aren't you? It'll be great! We won't have to worry, we'll be alone, and no one but Hosker knows where we are." Zaki chuckled. A shout rang out from one of the airships, beckoning across the ramp. Zaki bolted and swung Nkiruka around so that Zaki's left arm supported Nkiruka's legs and her right arm supported the Shevakiri's shoulders. The sailor rolled his eyes as the couple darted past and onto the ship.

Zaki stared blankly out from their porch. The house they had rented was fairly small, positioned in a mountain valley on an island dotted with a few other such houses. From the porch was a view that cascaded down with a set of waterfalls from natural springs, hemmed in by massive trees until the ground flattened and lead into a flawless white sand beach, with water so clear Zaki could make the gargantuan reefs from her seat. She laughed and sprang to her feet as pure joy flooded her for the first time in a while.

"Two weeks!" Zaki shouted at the top of her lungs. She bolted back indoors, tackle-hugging Nkiruka to the floor. She giggled ceaselessly while she pushed herself away from the no doubt surprised veteran soldier. "Two weeks, Inky! Come on, let's go to the beach! I want to go swimming, I brought a little snorkel for you so we can go see the reefs together!" Zaki cackled. She sat up, and pulled the band form around her neck, brushing a hand over the trio of narrow black lines on each side of her neck.

Nkiruka emitted a surprised yelp as she was picked up, swung around and promptly shifted into Zaki's arms in the same manner a soldier might carry an injured civilian from the site of a horrible disaster. "I can walk, I can walk-- ack!" The major's frantic pleading was interrupted as Zaki suddenly bolted across the gangplank and onto the airship, eliciting glances with her loud excited speech and generally boisterous manner. It wasn't very often that Nkiruka wanted to shrink away from people's sight, but she had never been carried before. It made her feel vulnerable. No good at all. "Sure I'm happy, but..." She didn't finish her sentence. She didn't want to admit that even though they had taken all those precautions, she had still packed her weapons for the trip. Not that it would make them any safer. Nkiruka had already demonstrated her failings in that respect.

It was in the middle of unpacking that Zaki suddenly started on about how long they'd be here. Nkiruka flinched from the sudden noise, freezing mid-clothes-folding and staring wide-eyed just moments before getting violently tackled and hugged onto the floor. She managed to hit the hard floor back-first instead of smacking her skull, maintaining a firm hold of the shirt she was folding like it was her weapon. Nkiruka stared straight at Zaki with a mixture of surprise and questioning, silent while the veteran giggled in amusement just a few inches from her own face. By the time she got off and exclaimed what she wanted them to do first, Nkiruka was nervously looking around, trying to ignore the heat coming off her cheeks.

"Just for me?" she asked, accepting the simple water-breathing apparatus. Zaki answered by simply removing the ribbon she always wore as a choker. "Wait. Are those gills?" Nkiruka stepped closer, eyebrows raising.

An old memory rose to the surface. Back when they were both mercenaries, they had reunited in a fairly amusing manner; both had enlisted on opposing sides. They brutally fought each other, not realizing who the other was. Nkiruka remembered asking the anonymous, armored warrior if she was even human. Zaki had even flipped the question back on Nkiruka, to her chagrin.

Nkiruka grinned, the dead nerves in her face only allowing one side to actually bare teeth. "You must be one of those desert nymphs, right?" She laughed as though she should have known. When she was done laughing off her own ignorance, the soldier went back to her usual serious tone, holding the snorkel low at her side and staring at her feet. "I don't mind. I'm... not human either, to be honest." No use kidding herself about it anymore.

Nkiruka began asking a few questions that Zaki had anticipated but still wasn't ready for. She blushed as she answered, she hated admitting the simple fact of what she was.

"...Yes. A delta nymph." Zaki replied sheepishly. She patted Inky across the back at her question, drawing her into a tight hug. "Hey, labels don't change who you are to me, Nkiruka." Zaki planted a quick kiss on Inky's mouth, before standing and going through her bags and plucking out her swimwear. It was lucky that someone had so recently invented quick-drying and water friendly cloth.

After a good walk to the beach, Zaki found herself standing on perfect white sands. The trail they had come down on was incredibly scenic, not to mention it took them past little stands of fruit trees that Zaki had hungrily plucked from as she went. She simply couldn't resist fresh fruit. Zaki reached back and took Inky's hands as she shed her sarong and sandals and stepped into the warm water. She descended into the water and then gently lead Nkiruka out to the reef, her eyes following after the colorful fishes darting around them. A lionfish lazily crossed above an anemone concealing a clownfish while a pair of eyes and teeth looked out from beneath a shelf. Zaki dove, her gills finding use for the first time in ages. The first few moments were sudden panic as her throat filled with water and lungs closed themselves. She felt herself relax, but was still a little on edge. She hadn't used her gills since her childhood. She twisted about and pointed at a passing school of colorful fish excitedly before darting to the base of a reef to stare at a colorful sea slug.

Zakiyyah the Kestrel had never actually been to a reef before.

Nkiruka followed down the trail, her quiet observation contrasting Zaki's hyperactivity. Their small shack-like cabin was arranged near the top of the rather steep island; they descended through a smooth, fenced dirt path that wound its way down the jungle in multiple switchbacks. During one of the straightaways she tried to listen past the bird song and insect chirps and found no sign of anyone else nearby. Mentally chastising herself for being alert to enemies when it was inappropriate, Nkiruka forced a smile at Zaki and took a bite of the star-shaped fruit in her hand. They talked a lot about mundane things like the plans for the vacation, the locale, news from the dwarves in Axerise, and similar things. During extended pauses in their conversation Nkiruka thought back to their mutual admission that neither of them were really human. It hadn't been as bad as she anticipated. Almost a non-issue. The realization that it hadn't been something she should have worried about put a small smile on the soldier's face.

The forest opened up to an idyllic white-sand beach that redoubled Zaki's enthusiasm. Nkiruka stepped out, experimentally, and found the sand to be cool and soft on her feet. "Whoever picked this place did a really good job," she joked. Zaki didn't waste any time before she was in the water; Nkiruka hurried to follow after her, biting the curved end of the snorkel tube and dropping into the waves once it was deep enough. Nictitating membranes slid over her eyes to protect them underwater. The ocean was clear, the light playing across the sea floor as they swam out to a reef further in. Nkiruka felt a little silly having to breathe through a tube whereas her girlfriend's gills were fully functional, but it was probably better than having to constantly hold her breath.

She could best describe the reef as being an explosion of color. Everything from the coral to the fish was made up of wildly vivid colors. She hadn't seen anything like it. Zaki's excited pointing and swimming around reflected Nkiruka's own cautious observation. She mostly held back because she didn't want to accidentally hurt or mess up anything. They swam down the reef until it fell into a rocky shelf, like an underground cliff, covered from almost all sides with coral, sea fans, anemones and the like. Next time Zaki swam by, Nkiruka grabbed her by the wrist and pointed at something in the distance. It looked like the opening to a cave. She swam until she was directly above it, took a deep breath and then dove down.

Zaki suddenly found herself dragged elsewhere. She looked questioningly at Inky then snapped her gaze to their destination, an underwater cave. She'd let Inky mess around for a bit before making sure the air-breather didn't drown. Their passage through the blackness was quick and easy, they surfaced in a half-lit grotto. Shafts of sunlight burst from cracks in the stone above, surrounded by long vines that dipped towards the water. The walls were moist with mist from a trio of waterfalls that fell from a cliff above them. Zaki twisted her head about to take in the sights.

"Whoever picked this place knew what she was doing." Zaki murmured with a giggle that echoed off the stone walls. She smiled, the gold embedded in her face reflecting the dim light. She moved her hand from Inky's hand to around her shoulders and pulled her closed, pressing her forehead against hers. She kissed her gently, a wry smile on her lips before descending into a few more quick kisses, against her cheek and then neck. Zaki giggled once more and released Nkiruka, letting herself drift away for a moment. She passed into a beam of light, and looked upwards at the hidden sky.

Nkiruka led the way through the dark water, which pushed in horizontally for a short distance before leading up a diagonal shaft. Bubbles poured from the now-useless snorkel tube as it filled with water and carried out her breath. Oddly enough, there was light as she approached the surface of some kind of underwater cave. Her lungs were barely out of breath by the time the soldier breached the surface, but she spat out her snorkel and took a deep breath anyway. It was dim, sure, but there were some cracks and holes in the surface that let in shafts of sunlight. "Wow." Waterfalls ran down the far edge of the cave, which was bordered by green plants with twisting vines all around. She spotted some engravings on the wall but was distracted by Zaki's proximity.

More out of instinct than any conscious action on her part, Nkiruka placed her fingertips lightly over Zaki's jawline while they kissed, running her thumb along one of the gold markings on her cheek. While beautiful, the two streaks of pure gold were actually scars sustained in combat. They had been fighting the alkhemical minions of the drow matron Olis'inth, which bled burning-hot liquid gold. Nkiruka herself had a much less attractive splotch of the metal permanently replacing a patch of skin on her upper thigh, surrounded by scar tissue. Thanks to her skill with heat and flame, Zaki's own wounds weren't debilitating; the gold was merely a part of her now. The markings on her face were even warmer than the rest of her skin, kept constantly pliable. Nkiruka ran her fingertips down the side of Zaki's neck. By the time they found the innocuous lines her gills made in her skin, the veteran pulled away.

Something triggered in Nkiruka's mind. A combination of movements -- the embracing and then the pulling away, perhaps combined with the lighting and moisture -- that together triggered a memory so sudden, vivid, and involuntary that it was actually painful. Her eyes went wild and within a heartbeat she wasn't in Istan anymore, she was in the Dwarven hold of Axerise, and Zaki was there, but there was blood and her armor plates were coming apart and she was slipping away. With a sudden intake of breath Nkiruka grabbed Zaki's arm, trying to pull her back, and she reached out with her right arm but her hand was gone so she used her left, and tears welled up in her eyes from a rush of grief and shame.

She snapped out of it almost as quickly as she had grabbed her. Nkiruka blinked several times, looked around with a worried expression and, suddenly realizing what she was doing, let Zaki go. "I'm sorry. I don't-- I panicked. Sorry."

Inky began pulling her back and Zaki hooked her around the back with her arm. She swam to the edge of the cave and sat atop a rough stone, lifting Inky onto her lap and nestling her head against her chest. She enjoyed the feel of another warm body clutched against her; the knowledge that she could protect one person and make them feel absolutely safe. The act of calming emotions and soothing Nkiruka warmed Zaki's heart. She smiled.

"Panic is natural. Don't worry about it, just relax and remember..." Zaki said. She trailed away as she clutched Nkiruka around her shoulders, gently kissing the top of her head. "We are on vacation." Zakiyyah finished. She chuckled, her voice echoing gently off the walls. "Now, what would you like for dinner? I was thinking some pineapple fried rice, or maybe I could try and catch a few fish?" The cook asked. Food generally distracted people, and Nkiruka was a sucker for good cooking.

Whatever that was, it sure didn't feel natural. Nkiruka took deep, fast, uneven breaths, staring into space and gritting her teeth together to try to calm herself down. After a while, she forced a laugh. "How embarrassing. Thank the dead gods we're alone." Despite her words, the soldier hesitated a few more seconds before finally pushing herself away. She clambered up the rocks, considering Zaki's offer. The sudden subject change might have seemed jarring on the surface, but it did exactly what it was intended: distracted her and allowed for an easy out of the admittedly awkward situation Nkiruka had put them in. "Pineapple fried rice sounds good. Not in the mood for meat. I saw some coconut palms near our cabin coming in and I thought I might climb up and grab a few, too," Nkiruka said while she examined the engravings on the grotto's walls. She waited a few seconds, chewing her bottom lip, before wheeling back around to face her partner. Wearing a sheepish grin, she pressed the tips of her index fingers together. "Don't, uh, tell anyone what happened back there, okay? Not even friends. Serelle would die laughing if she found out I had to be... well, you know."

After dinner, Nkiruka lounged on the balcony, feet crossed and resting over the railing. Munching on a fragment of coconut for dessert, she stared up at the night sky. Clusters of stars formed a band of light stretching across the whole sky. "Pretty good view. You know the constellations?" She pointed up at one corner of the sky, moving her finger to indicate each one as she named them. "There's the Sultan's Chariot, the Bennu Bird, the Scales, the Dragon-Eating-Its-Tail, the Horse and Foal... oh, there's the Tiger. And right next to it is the Pot of Water." Nkiruka flashed a toothy grin at Zaki, as if saying See? I do know something that doesn't relate to killing people! "This is what people do on vacation, right? Sit around doing meaningless things? Geh, I already feel restless."

Zaki grinned as she looked down at her old apron. She had worn it when she was barely eleven years old, cooking for the whole monastery. It wasn't quite large enough anymore, but she didn't want to ruin any of the nice clothes she had brought with her to the trip. Flames curled out from her arm, reaching towards a massive steel wok that she suspended with one hand. It was fun cooking.

The monk chuckled as she held Nkiruka around the hip, curled up close to her. Zaki's eyes were fixated on the little stars in the high above, following Nkiruka's hand as she listed them. Zaki knew the Dragon-Eating-Its-Tail, but that was the extent of her knowledge of the stars. Nkiruka commented on restlessness and Zaki couldn't help but shrug.

"I don't see how you feel restless." She whispered. Zaki attempted to nestle up against Nkiruka, but only managed to rest her cheek on Nkiruka's head. "I didn't know the stars; my eyes were always fixated on the person I was fighting. There's something meaningful. I always worried about the next fight or what was required of me. What people thought of me! How could the Steel Tower of Istan be a silly, buxom nymph? Or, well, you know, a lovey-dovey chef." She clutched Nkiruka tighter out of reflex, but just as quickly released her grip. Her hand gently stroked Nkiruka's hip. "Thank you." She murmured.

A frown tugged at the corners of Nkiruka's lips. "My father taught me astronomy. And mathematics." That was all she said on that particular subject. Both of them were aware her father Tauim died recently. Even Nkiruka knew that going into more detail than that would spoil the mood. Zaki went on to describe her own view of daily life, which was remarkably similar to the soldier's own -- except the fame aspect, of course. And being a lovey-dovey chef and such. "I have to admit, I never really pegged you for the affectionate type. Not even at the monastery back then." She shrugged, supposing at least one of them had to be affectionate or it wasn't much of a relationship after all. "You really shouldn't worry about what other people think of you. Just do what you think is right -- that's what I've always done. Heh. You could be more like me: no reputation, lots of enemies, debatable merit."

Zaki leaned back a little bit and then leaned over, pulling an envelope from the windowsill above them. It was sealed by the symbol of Ax and Ox. With a bit of heat from her fingertip the wax melted, and with a giggle Zaki took the blue wax and quickly drew up one of the tattoos common to ax and ox across her left cheek. She pulled a letter out and read it aloud.

"Zakiyyah Kestrel, your reenlistment to the Ax and Ox is accepted." Zaki said with an officious tone. She leaned back on Inky, and handed her the letter. The rest were the boring little details, a list of the terms of her reenlistment. "I will be more like you. Shevakiri wouldn't take me unfortunately, Hosker told me that Ax and Ox wouldn't let Shevakiri steal another special snow flake." Zaki explained. She smiled, letting her hand falling on Inky's thigh.

"What?! Let me see." Nkiruka took it reverently into her hands and read the stuffily-worded reenlistment letter. Her eyes shot from the piece of vellum to Zaki and then back again. The soldier, in a fit of excitement brought on by her girlfriend's infectious cheerfulness, threw her arms around Zaki. Had the veteran been capable of being knocked down, the forcefulness of the hug probably would've resulted in both of them crashing out of their chairs. "Zaki, this is fantastic! I didn't even know you were interested in going back. I don't doubt General Aela and Brigadier General Gulrukh were fighting tooth and nail to keep you in Taber Nahkal. It's too bad we didn't get into the same regiment, though." Her Istani -- the language they had been speaking this whole time -- was so rapid-fire as she spoke that her slight tribal accent came through on more than one occasion.

"But you know, the stipulations in this letter are surprisingly lax for the Axe and Ox. You're practically a free agent. And I have a lot of freedom as a high-ranking Ranger, too. It's entirely possible that we could be working together sometime in the future. Not only that, but if we--" Nkiruka cut herself off, almost forgetting herself and saying something terribly damning. To distract, the soldier grabbed Zaki by the wrist and clambered to her feet. "Ah, sitting outside is boring, and it's late. I have a lot to think about now." With no more fanfare than that, she dragged the veteran back into the cabin.

Zaki awoke with Nkiruka sprawled across her, and craned her neck to kiss the top of the woman's head. The shevakiri had been truthful, she was an awful sleeper. Zaki stretched out and squiggled from beneath Inky. She flopped onto the floor and then crawled over to her wardrobe. It was time to make breakfast.

Zaki chuckled as she ladled out coconut curry into Inky's bowl and poured coconut milk into the woman's cup. It was coconut milk that Zaki had stashed with in suitcase and bought initially at considerable expense. Zaki sat down at the other end of the table with a glass of water and a smile. Smudged blue wax covered one side of her face. "The agenda for today is a bath, some rock climbing, some lunch, some more rock climbing...hmm. Good thing I brought a spyglass for birding."

The monk twisted around onto her back and flopped into her blanket, letting the sun warm her back. A seagull cried over the sound of the waves rolling in. She stared at Inky with one eye open. Normally the ranger was asleep, but she was curiously awake. It was a blatant sign that something was on her mind, Nkiruka was very much a person who was either working as hard as possible or relaxing as hard as possible. Zaki lifted herself and laid on Inky's back, her head just past Nkiruka's shoulder. "What's on your mind, dear?" Zaki asked.

Nkiruka looked up from the bowl she cupped in both hands, tilting her head. Her tired eyes were unfocused and made her look like she was staring through Zaki. "Rock climbing? To where?" And why was it going to take the majority of the morning and afternoon? Moreover, Nkiruka didn't know what "birding" was, but it sounded dangerous. She didn't dare risk embarrassing herself even more. The soldier began to inhale her coconut curry, realized she wasn't in a hurry for anything, and slowed herself down.

So apparently by rock climbing, Zaki had literally meant climbing rocks. Not going anywhere, just climbing them for the sheer joy of... climbing rocks. Nkiruka, admittedly, was a bit skeptical at first. She acknowledged that the ability to climb rocks or other sheer surfaces was an important skill to have, but she wasn't sure it would be something worthwhile on its own, and it baffled her that people actually considered it a kind of hobby. It would be like considering exercising or running a hobby: ridiculous. However, when they actually went out onto the jungle cliffs about an hours' walk away, the climb was so difficult in spots that Nkiruka found herself enjoying it.

The next couple days they spent the sunniest part of the day laying out on the beach or swimming. Normally Nkiruka would fall right asleep sprawled out on the sand, but she was awake this time. Zaki noticed and was quick to point it out. The soldier made a vague grumbling sound and shifted in her spot. "Can I ask you a personal question?" She waited for an affirmation to continue. "How did you deal with the Eighth Corridor situation? Not exactly what you did, per se. I mean, how did you move past all the dead people? Mentally?" Nkiruka knew it was a terrible way to phrase what she wanted to ask, but she couldn't think of the right words.
