| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

The chubby little man did not seem to stop running no matter how many times he stumbled. It was only hours ago that he wasn't a man at all. Though not his natural state, his new instincts had immediately taken hold of him, and he escaped from that place with his life. Agonizing screams of the others once like him never seemed to stop, even though he knew for a fact it was all over, for now. Oddly enough, the name "Pessach" continued to come up as his mind wandered. Along with that, the fate of the others, his future, how long this would last, what he could do now. Had the others survived? What would he do next? Would he be like this forever? Just how powerful was he in this body? Pessach, as he would learn to call himself, found himself surrounded by lanterns in some city. How safe it was, he did not know. Just where it was, he did not know. Where he could stay, he did not know. Pessach was stumped. He felt somewhat out-of-place. After all, he was only a spatula who had found himself trapped inside a human body. Did he really make the right choice in escaping? Confused little Pessach looked to the items he had taken from the castle: the quarterstaff and the rope. No torches, no lanterns, no matches. However would Pessach see more than simple outlines the many structures without some form of light? A better question, how did he even have a concept of what light was? As Pessach pondered, the quarterstaff began to glow a faint glow. Pessach gasped in surprise and threw the staff down. As he did, the light went out. He put the rope away as he dropped to his hands and knees, examining the staff from all angles. Commanding it to relight in his own head, he was startled when it obeyed. He picked it up and began to wave it around, trying to tap into the many powers of this needlessly large stick. While spinning around in a circle and jumping about, he attempted to defeat the attempted captors that weren't really there. A thrust here, a jab there, a leap for victory, and a small pool of blood on his forehead when he knocked himself to the ground in his awkwardness. This body would take some getting used to. |

Every time Eko set out for work, she needed to make important decisions on the fly. Things like which streets to hit, and at which times of day. Nowhere too populated, prominent, near a conflict border or set in the center of a clearly claimed territory. Charbon Street, for example, was one of the best places -- lots of pedestrian traffic -- but it was dangerous to try anything there in the hours before and after businesses opened. She'd learned that the hard way, almost losing her hands to an orc butcher she stupidly tried to mug once. It wasn't very often that she could escape the consequences of her own terrible decisions, so she was grateful whenever it turned out like that. Beyond time and place, the most important decision Eko needed to make was which person to target. It was hard to find someone in Balefire who wasn't armed, as it was legal for civilians to carry weapons. Instead of looking at their weapons, Eko focused on the big picture: a guess to see if her target could actually handle themselves in a fight. The way they walked, how they carried the weapon. Sometimes people made stupid mistakes, making themselves easier targets in the attempt to present themselves as a greater threat. A lot of Balefirens put on a bluffing act to keep themselves safe. If Eko couldn't tell the difference between an idiot with a sword strapped to his back and a veteran willing to fight back, she could get in some really serious trouble. On some lucky days, she didn't need to make a decision. Sometimes some idiot outsider would bumble into Balefire, offering themselves up to the whole city through the naivete they projected. This man was a case if ever there was one. Leaning against the wall of a building amid a sparse crowd, Eko watched the chubby, short outsider. A massive dog the size of a wolf was splayed out over her feet, chewing on a bone it had retrieved earlier. She occasionally bent down to pet the beast's shiny blue-black shag of fur as a scene of almost physically painful stupidity unfolded before her. The boy striking himself in the skull was her cue. She slid her boots out from under the dog's belly, causing it to perk up and bound after Eko on heavy paws. Having been standing not too far away from the spectacle, her target was still on the ground by the time she reached him. The footpad looked down on him, hand on hip, hoping to ascertain whether he actually succeeded in knocking himself unconscious. Now that would be remarkable. Either way, the outcome would be the same. |

Pessach remained in fetal position on the ground, filling his head with thoughts of self-hate. As he questioned his worth, the sound of light leather-bound footsteps prowling in his general direction caused him to realize someone was nearing. He sat up and looked over and saw a rather young female moving towards him. "H-hello there," he said shyly. It was only natural to assume she was friendly; after all, it seemed a little unfair to conclude someone was a bad person before meeting. The thought of the possibility of her witnessing his own beating made him feel embarrassed. Just then, he realized the girl was not alone. Following behind was a shiny black dog. Pessach smiled slightly, seeing the animal. He made a mental note to complement the animal in their ensuing conversation. |

So he hadn't knocked himself out after all. If that had been the case, Eko wouldn't know what to think anymore. The boy issued a sheepish greeting after sitting up, embarrassed as he should be. Eko kept a look of easy confidence about herself while she stared down at him. "Welcome to Balefire," she said, holding her arms out to indicate the overpowering darkness and halos of lantern-light around them. Her dog Ansha came lumbering up not a moment after, furry tail wagging as she sniffed this new person. She was truly a monster of a dog, all muscle and fur and teeth, but she was friendly to a point. Conspicuously not helping her soon-to-be victim get up, Eko quickly got down to business. "Friend, I don't know how you got here, or why, and I don't envy you. But I'll have you know your life is going to get a lot more difficult if you don't listen to a few requests of mine." Her fingers disappeared under the layers she was wearing, wrapping around a hidden sheathe on her belt. They reappeared gripping a large dagger. Eko held the weapon comfortably, as if it was a natural extension of her hand. Using her free hand, she made an expectant gesture. "I won't mince words. Give me all the money and valuables you have on your person." It would've been nice to have Ansha give a frightening growl for added atmosphere, but the knife and the threat were usually all that was needed. |

"Welcome to Balefire," she greeted him, motioning to the area around her. Balefire, evidently the name of the place. The dog soon began sniffing Pessach, and he smirked a bit. However, the smirk quickly disappeared. "Friend, I don't know how you got here, or why, and I don't envy you. But I'll have you know your life is going to get a lot more difficult if you don't listen to a few requests of mine," she threatened. The girl took hold of a dagger and extended a hand, explaining, "I won't mince words. Give me all the money and valuables you have on your person." "A mugger, huh?" he thought. He quickly sprung from the ground to his feet in an almost impressive manner. Pessach attempted to maintain his nerves and responded as calmly as possible. "Right, valuables and money," Pessach began, half-smiling in an attempt to keep his cool. "Yeah, can't help you there, afraid. Don't exactly have any. I mean, these clothes don't even fit me." He motioned to his garb and shrugged innocently. The spatula did not particularly wish to get killed off so quickly, much less by a girl this young. |

The foreigner attempted the classic "got nothing on me" defense. Eko gave her knife a quick flourish, visibly bored from his excuses. Ansha, blissfully unaware that her owner was in the process of mugging someone, continued to wag her tail. Well, if he insisted on keeping his possessions to himself, she really didn't have any choice but to take them from him. That was the implication when she lunged at him, attempting to grab him by the collar of his shirt with her free, cloth-wrapped fist -- she could've settled for a sleeve, too, if he was a quick little outsider. Regardless, her trained eyes roved all over him, looking for a coinpurse, a weapon that wasn't a stupid stick, a full pocket, something she could steal. Anything at this point would be worth the trouble. There was no possible way this guy could come into Balefire with literally nothing but the clothes on his back. She even briefly considered stealing the clothes off his back, and that was probably the only thing making her hesitate to stab him in the gut. Ansha started barking. Out of reflex moreso than conscious thought, Eko jumped away from the struggle and took several steps back, crouched low and wary. And just in time, too; someone jumped down from a low rooftop nearby and stuck a landing right between her and the idiot she was mugging. He was a handsome young man around the same age as Eko, with similar dark skin, pale eyes and unfriendly bearing. Eko's grip tightened on her knife. Ansha kept barking, so she was forced to command her to quiet down. "Didn't know you were still mugging people, Eko," the boy said. A smallsword was lashed to one of his thighs. Eko briefly pictured herself killing her brother with his own weapon. "I need spending money," she protested. "Leave me alone, Dian." "Can't. Father needs some help. Told me to find you." Dian looked over his shoulder at the victim of Eko's attempted mugging. "Sorry," he told him. "Hey, you could help too, sir. Looking for a job? We'll pay you." "You can't be serious." |

"You're not going to find anything..." he muttered as she grabbed his collar and began to search him all over. Pessach waited awkwardly for her to realize that he had nothing. The dog began to bark. Then, a third person joined the group. He was an attractive male, young looking, and he had found himself standing between to two of them. Pessach noticed the blade he was carrying on his thigh and almost considered attacking the girl with it. "Didn't know you were still mugging people, Eko," said the newcomer. "Ah, a name. Eko. I've got something on her, now," Pessach thought to himself. "I need spending money. Leave me alone, Dian," she replied. The newcomer was Dian, Pessach managed to gather. "Can't. Father needs some help. Told me to find you." Dian said. He looked to Pessach. "Sorry. Hey, you could help too, sir. Looking for a job? We'll pay you." "You can't be serious," commented the mugger. That summarized it all. "Yeah... I think I'll pass..." Pessach said. "Can I go now?" |

While Eko's expression never significantly changed, she was fuming. Her free hand clenched into a tight, trembling fist as she watched her brother offer her victim a job, presumably for the sole reason of making her life just a little bit more frustrating. In her family, healthy competition between the four siblings was actively encouraged. Her parents had no idea how bad it was getting over these past few years. In the silence between the offer and the refusal, Eko was already thinking of ways to get back at Dian in the future. Well, at least her victim did have some common sense to turn down the offer of a job. It was likely that the nature of what they were going to do would get the boy killed. Taking it completely in stride, Dian shrugged. "Sure. Stay out of trouble, now. Sorry about my sister." Eko chewed on Dian's fake friendliness, pushing her disgust somewhere deep inside of her, fueling her. She remained stock still for several moments as she waited for her completely possessionless mugging victim to leave. Who the hell travels without possessions, anyway? Eko grumbled. Ansha sat down, watching him leave. She threw a punch at Dian without even waiting for her former victim to disappear from view. He caught it with his open palm, hard, but she pulled her fist back before he could grab it. While this was happening she flipped her knife into an inverted grip and ran a slash at his face, forcing him to step back. "How long were you waiting there?" Eko said. "Stop it!" Dian deflected her knife-wielding wrist with his forearm to keep from being disemboweled, came up and shunted her with his shoulder to stagger his sister back. "Seriously, we need to leave!" Breathing quickly through her nose, Eko reconsidered pressing the attack. She really hoped Dian wasn't lying to her and their father Kusuma really did need help. After a moment of consideration, she sheathed her weapon. "Fine. Lead the way." It was like accepting defeat, but she'd get back at him eventually. She always did. They disappeared into the streets of Balefire, strange foreigner forgotten. |

"Sure. Stay out of trouble, now. Sorry about my sister," the man told him, apologetically. Pessach was, from this, able to quite clearly grasp that they were siblings, another analysis. Of course, it mattered not to Pessach at this point. The newcomer had given him a free pass to get out of there, so he decided to turn and leave right away, ignoring the bickering that ensued behind him. Pessach began to realize how terribly things could have gone there. It was definitely luck that the other man had shown up to intervene. Why, Pessach could've been hurt, or worse: he could have been killed! After being thankful for his safety, Pessach knew it was the time to be deciding where to go to next. There had to be some nicer place somewhere. Somewhere brighter, maybe? Somewhere with nicer people? The spatula decided to find some city with lots of food and maybe a library to find out just what he was. |
