| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

All seemed peaceful. The ruins were blanketed with a thick layer of snow, and not a peep could be heard, save for the occasional howl of the wind. Time seemed frozen still in this desolate place... Until the heavy footsteps of a lone warrior crunched the snow beneath his feet. He trudged through the main walkway of the once brilliant city, eyes shifting to and fro, peering for a glimpse of his prey. He had come within a moment's notice to quell the threat of the dreaded frost Undead who plagued this land, yet... so far, he'd not seen a single rotting corpse since he arrived. He gripped the hilt of his blade, leaning it on his shoulder as he continued walking along the road. The snowfall gradually started to grow heavier as he made his way deeper into the ruins, and an uneasy feeling crept up the back of his neck, as though he was being watched. Though always wary, he was never one to be paranoid. When he had a hunch, he was usually right. No later than a second after taking a look around, an old, weathered arrow flew right past his face. His eyes widened, and he quickly went for cover, bounding for a crumpled wall that was just large enough to conceal his body. He planted his hand on the top, then pulled himself over and ducked down, narrowly avoiding another arrow. The silence had finally broken. The sound of several feet marching caught his attention. Distant moans and gurgles caused him to focus his attention to the left of his position, and he scowled. He'd found the undead he was looking for. Several, in fact. He counted at least a score among them, with more joining into their ranks by the moment. Locked in formation, and brandishing heavily rusted weapons, they continued their march. In a matter of seconds, the roles had been switched. The hunter was the prey, and the cold eyes of the living dead stared at his muscular form as they neared. He lifted his head to search for the archers, and nearly took an arrow in the eye. He'd managed to move his head just in time, feeling the cold metal tip graze his temple. He grimaced, then conjured a fireball in his free hand and hurled it in the direction the arrow came from. It was impossible to know if he'd actually removed his target from the fight. The undead were beginning to close in, and he was grossly outnumbered. Luckily for him, he lived for such horrible odds, and gladly met them head on. Were it not for the archers, he'd be in there already, hacking and slashing through the waves of undead that were steadily growing. More and more of the horrors began pouring out of the stonework, mindlessly shuffling towards their prey. He narrowed his eyes, then looked around, noticing a small building not far from the wall he'd holed himself up behind. The spellsword took a deep inhale, and quickly dashed towards the building as fast as his legs could carry him. From there, he could make there numbers count for nothing, and hold off any further attacks from the unseen archers that still loosed arrow after arrow as he made for cover. |

Aiden's breath came in gasps as he ran through the deserted streets of the ancient city. Yards behind ran a number--at least five--undead carrying crude weaponry as they chased their recently acquired target. Fast buggers, the elf thought, quickly rounding a corner and sprinting away, hoping to lose his pursuers by continuing to take breakneck turns at random junctures. Though moderately effective, Aiden found himself quite lost, separated as he was from the main, wide avenues of the ruined city. Rounding yet another corner, Aiden turned. And slipped. Flopping rather spectacularly, the elf slid on the snowy path and found himself looking up at the night sky as more icy flakes fell gently to the ground below. Staying incredibly quiet, the only sound the elf could hear was his own laborious breathing...and the sound of his head throbbing in pain. "You're kidding me. I can fight a whole manner of things, but I can't handle snow? Get a hold of yourself, buddy." Grunting, Aiden sat up, holding his head and rubbing it gently as he looked over the rest of his body. Nothing seemed broken or even sprained, a thankful fact considering the danger which roamed throughout this place. What had started as a journey of curiosity was rapidly becoming one of constant flight from the ranks of the undead throughout the ruins. He had already spotted the bodies of other warriors who had come to investigate and failed to do so effectively or discreetly. Their mangled bodies lay in the snow as beacons to any other foolhardy travelers--these undead were not to be trifled with. It was the very danger that they represented which required that they be stopped by any means necessary. Aiden had already discovered that these creatures were nearly immune to normal fire. It was only through a bit of ingenuity--and the help of the celestial with which he was bonded--that he had been able to get away so far. How long that would last against these seemingly intelligent creatures, however, remained to be seen. "Bloody things," Aiden muttered, standing slowly. As he straightened and looked ahead, his heart seemed to fall in his chest. The "road" he had turned down seemed to be much more of an alleyway. And at the end of that alley stood five undead, glaring at him with milky white eyes and mouths agape. Craning his neck, Aiden saw the group that had been chasing him standing just behind, their silence deafening in the snowy night. "Wonderful," he said, shrugging a bit as he drew his lightning blade from its scabbard across his back. "Bloody things cornered me, the elf who managed to slip in the snow. I wonder if someone could writea scenario this bad. With a chilling roar, the undead charged as Aiden shouted in anger. "Moji!" he shouted, swinging his blade forward while running ahead. A powerful blast of lightning shot forth from the blade, crashing into the undead in front of the elf and ripping through them with a powerful blast. Aiden ducked his head and didn't stop running, leaping over two smoldering undead bodies and weaving between those remaining. Emerging on the other end of the alley, Aiden sighed in relief as he noticed that he was once more on the main avenue of the city. "Great!" he shouted, already turning down the road and getting his bearings. However, his smile flashed and suddenly turned to despair as an arrow came whizzing through the air, landing in the snow covered street and missing Aiden's head by centimeters, at most. The arrow stuck up in the snow as Aiden looked around quickly, realizing that he was not only surrounded by undead, but that they actually had the ability to wield bows! "This is bull," Aiden muttered, running once more, this time in a zig zag pattern to be more elusive. Seeing a dilapidated building with a broken wooden door, Aiden charged straight ahead at full speed, thankful for the temporary and incredibly well placed cover. Bursting through the door, the elf reduced the rotten thing to a pile of splinters as he tumbled inside, hoping that his temporary shelter wasn't already inhabited by the very things he'd been running from. . . OOC: Let's assume that Aiden has entered the same structure as you, but from the back or a side door. |

Someone was inside. Had the undead horrors managed to flank him? "What now?!" He snarled as he turned to the sound of the noise, wrapping his fingers tightly around the hilt of his broadsword, then ran towards the back of the structure as fast as he could, nearly tripping over the elf. The warrior halted himself just in time, then eyed the vaguely familiar figure over. He wasn't undead, at least far as he could tell, but he kept his weapon drawn. No doubt the creatures outside would be there soon. "You, elf! Get up. We're going to have company!" Not a moment after he spoke, a crash was heard in the front room, followed by the hiss of a frost undead. The frigid skeletal warrior appeared before them, letting out yet another hiss before charging towards Godfrey, with a battle axe gripped in its cold, dead hands. It hefted its weapon high, then attempted to lower it upon his head. He made short work of the monster as he sliced it across its gut and shoved his blade through its chest. As it dropped the axe, he quickly spun around and dug his weapon into its skull, causing a sickening snap-squish sound. It fell to the ground, looking as though it wouldn't be getting back up any time soon. More rushed into the structure, causing Godfrey to ready one of his fighting knives in his off hand. Hopefully, there numbers wouldn't mean much in such a narrow space, but there was still no way of knowing whether or not survival was still a possibility. More and more of the undead crowded into the building, each thirsting for the blood and hungering for the flesh of the man and the elf inside. Godfrey tore into their ranks, furiously hacking and slashing recklessly yet skillfully. The battle had begun, and it wouldn't be long before the sounds of clashing steel drew more of the monsters into the fray. |

Aiden hit the ground with a thud, covered in soft, rotting wood as he looked about his new surroundings. For now, he was greeted with a silence broken only by the sound of his own breathing. But seconds later, he could hear rapid footfalls across the snow, no doubt heading towards his current location. "Awesome," he muttered, rolling to his feet quickly and placing his hand on the hilt of his sword. And then suddenly, the sound of footfalls from within the house grabbed the elf's attention. He heard someone snarl as they ran through the structure...and then revealed themselves to be a totally live human. Aiden blinked rapidly, wondering if he should attack or not, before the gruff looking man barked, "You, elf! Get up. We're going to have company!" "Oh stating the bloody obvious, are we?" the elf spat back, getting to his feet as a crashing sound echoed from the front of the room. A hissing undead came charging towards them both, but quickly fell victim to the blades of the human warrior. As the undead met its defeat, Aiden moved forward, muttering, "They won't all be that easy. It's icy exterior was a bit weaker than that of the others...I wonder why?" Aiden had little time to ponder the reason as the room suddenly exploded into chaos. Not only were undead massing towards the front of the room--the direction from which Aiden had burst in--they were also beginning to come from the front of the entire structure, surrounding the two warriors on both sides. They were funneled into the rather narrow space to the rear, a fact Aiden noted with a nervous smirk as he stepped forward. "Shar os oji!" he incanted, watching as a wall of dark green ooze suddenly rose from the floor and blocked the entryway before him. Trusting the skills of the warrior at his back, Aiden watched as the undead tore through his gooey barrier, still aggressive, but now markedly slower and, in some cases, weaponless. Aiden resisted the urge to laugh as he brandished his lightning blade and charged forward, his deadly blade skills going to work as he readied another spell. "Thastol shadi," he incanted, continuing his attack as his blade became coated in a powerful, green tinged flame. The mixed attack of fire and holy magic wreathed the blade, making quicker work of the frosty undead before him...though how long the two warriors would be able to hold out against the numbers before them remained to be seen. . . |

Azrael sneered at the carnage of the battlefield with a cold indifference. He and a cohort of twenty like minded warriors had entered the ruins some 4 hours hence, and had at once made contact with the frozen horde. Now, he and just three others were all that remained standing. For a hundred meters in every direction bodies littered the floor, very few still whole. It was a grim sight. The old Inquisitor looked to the two remaining men. Both held wounds far more grievous than his, though he could see in their eyes clear as day the pious fire burning bright as ever. They were good men. It was a shame they would never see the end of this day. "Where do we go fro-" One of the two men started to say, but was silenced instantly by the arrow that now protruded from his gullet. He choked and fell. "Cover!" Azreal yelled, hurling himself behind a broken chunk of wall as a wave of arrows whistled through the air, missing him by inches. Despite his shout, the one other remaining survivor was a survivor no longer. The two arrow-riddled corpses of the warriors lay still on the frozen ground, testament to their failure. Reaching out from behind his cover, Azreal grabbed a splintered shield, at the same time tucking the mighty hammer Malleus into his belt. What was to come required something a little more nimble. But not a lot. He drew instead from the opposite hip his small mace, plain and unadorned. A quick peek from behind the wall and Azreal tensed. Four zombie archers faced him from down a street, a mere thirty paces between them. Here we go. Literally exploding from behind cover, the old Inquisitor whipped his shield up, covering as much of his body as possible. Almost instantly he received a couple of impacts on the shield, but he didn't let it disturb him. The hardened wood had held for the few seconds he needed to cross the ground between him and the archers and now Azrael was among them, smashing left and right, loosing the shield in the melee but carrying on regardless. He saw the last archer draw back his bowstring and in an instant flung his mace, distracting the undead abomination long enough to draw his great warhammer and end the fight with one final blow. With the crack of frozen bones still fresh in his ears, Azreal set off down the street at a jog, breath coming in ragged gasps. Ahead he saw yet more movement, in a direction opposite to his this time. Thanking the Gods, Azrael ran on into the night. Spoiler: click to toggle
