Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Most of the night went by uneventfully. At close to dawn, a small noise woke Ajax from his dosing. He looked around really quick, and saw a little bunny. Ajax got up slowly, and went to pet the bunny. The bunny jumped back a little at first, but then came over and let Ajax pet it. Ajax smiled softly as the bunny leaped closer.

After a moment, a figure in robs started to approach Ajax. He pulled out a arrow, and waited to see if this figure would try to harm either of them. After a moment, the figure came into view. It looked like an older man. Ajax didn't let his bow drop. Even old people can hurt you physically. Ajax waited a little longer, and than saw that he was carrying some things. "Halt! Who goes there?" Ajax said to the man. "I come looking for the run away. Who are you?" The figure said. Ajax was still hesitate, but allowed the bow to rest at his side, still holding the arrow firm, should he feel the need to let it go. "I am Alex Star. What have you there?" Ajax used his cover name, in case this old man decided to go back to the monastery, and send out a trap for them, looking for. "I am looking for Emery. What of you, stranger?"

Ajax nodded, just as he thought. "I am here to give him things to help his journey." This put Ajax back a step. He nodded. "Aye. I travel with him." The man walked over to Ajax, then took a step back. "I haven't seen one of you many a year. What brings you here?" The man took one step back, and stared at Ajax. "I came to visit the monastery, and found a young lade, hiding next to a fire. We got ambushed there, and ran. I killed the men that you saw on your way down here." Ajax tilted his head higher up the hill.

~ ~ ~

The two men sat down talking about many things, but a large part was Emery. The old man told Ajax a story of a bird with a broken wing. Ajax smiled at that story, thinking that it sounded kind of like Emery might do. Ajax told him about how they had met, and the next morning. Finally, after what felt like an hour, Ajax asked the old man about the voice change. The old healer told Ajax that Emery could change genders. Ajax was surprised, but when he thought back, he saw a little bit more of a bumped in his chest the night before...

That was when Ajax thought that he heard a sound coming from the camp site. Without releasing it, Ajax had walked a little bit away from the site. He yelled to Emery "Emery. I'm here. There is someone who you might want to talk to." Ajax stood up, and walked closer to the camp site. The healer followed close behind them. Ajax smiled as he walked around the last tree. He pulled the squirrel out, and started a small fire, in the pit that Emery had made the night before.

Emery woke, feeling cramp and cold. She wished she had more than a cloak to warm her. She was used to beds, even if they were the spartan ones of the monastery. Sleeping on the ground would take some getting used to for her. She blinked and crawled out, wondering what Ajax might mean by her wanting to meet someone. Her head popped up, and she saw Ajax relaxing with a familiar figure, one with a long dark beard streak with light grey.

"Brother Kelloc?" she asked, pulling her way free. "What are you doing here?" She trotted over to them, squatting beside the old healer. When she first arrived at the monastery, he was one of the few adults there that tolerated her outbursts, which she admitted were violent. She was fond of him, being one of the first people to cheer him up when his, as he put it, chestnut hair started turning grey. In Emery's eyes, as she told him, it just made it more interesting. Now his hair was more light grey than dark, and his face was lined with wrinkles, accenting that same old smile.

"Hello, there, Emery," he said to her. "Feeling girlish today?"

"Its easier to ride like this," Emery explained, arranging her cloak around her for maximum warmth. "I can't stretch as much as a boy."

"You could have mentioned you have that ability to those you meet," Brother Kelloc said.

"People act weird when I do," Emery pointed out. She didn't know why. She thought it was weird that other people didn't want to change genders when they wanted to. She was tired of that argument, though, so she didn't bring it up.

"I suppose they do," Brother Kelloc admitted. He turned to Ajax. "I'm sorry to hear you felt it necessary to kill those who came to retrieve Emery, Mister Star. That is only going to make things harder for him later."

"But they were shooting at me!" Emery protested. "Ajax was just protecting me!"

"...No...No, that doesn't make sense. There would be no reason to do that unless..." He paused and rubbed his beard. "Hmm....I suppose Old Abbot Harker, may his soul rest in peace, told our new abbot a bit more than..." He shook his head. "Well, never you mind. I...Is this true, Mister Star? If it is, then I suppose it is good I did come to look for him, and that you stumbled upon him."

As he lay on the ground next to the fire pit, Ajax heard Emery complain. He...She...umm...Well, Emery sounds just like child from my days. How funny is it that, no matter what time it may be, the children never learn not to complain... Ajax thought to himself. It was true. As a youngster, Ajax had complained many a time, about little things, sometimes random things. It seemed like the new generations still had that small flaw, as well.

As the conversation shifted from Emery to himself, Ajax found it...odd... that the old healer spoke of the old abbot like that, and that there seemed to be some sort of secret going around about Emery. Ajax shook it off. It was not his business what others said. "Yes, I am afraid that is correct." Ajax turned back to the healer, the food ready. Seeing as Ajax had not expected another to join them for breakfast, there was slightly smaller amount for each of them. Ajax handed a piece to Emery. It was cooling quickly in the ice cold of the morning. He took another for himself, and then left the last for the healer to take if he wanted it. Otherwise, Ajax would split it up again, and give Emery a slightly bigger piece. He would have enough stamina to get them through at least lunch, if not later. At the very least, he could stop for Emery, and hunt a bit. It never hurt to have extras with you when you planned to go on a long trip.

Ajax indicated that they shouldn't wait around much longer. They would be sending out more to look for Emery, and to look for those whom didn't return the night before. "Had I not acted as soon as I had, I'm sure they would've brought Emery back to the monastery last night. I can't be sure that he would be alive though." Ajax said the last part a little quieter, hoping to not worry Emery to much. What he said next, he basically whispered in the healer's ear "From what I can tell, they where shooting for the kill, not just to bring down. Not sure what that means to you, but I figure I should let someone know." Ajax then moved his down, and finished his squirrel.

Brother Kelloc watched Ajax, his eyes steady, but troubled. "If they had brought Emery back and said he was shot by a hunter's arrow, I would be saddened, but I certainly wouldn't think that..." He sighed and looked down at his hands. He'd chosen not to take any of the meat, stating they would need it more. "I'm afraid Emery has enemies there, as he knows, sadly made due to the circumstances that led him to our humble home. I cannot say more about what I know, but it seemed that the protection that Abbot Harker held over him has died along with the man. Emery..." he said, looking over at the young girl.

"It isn't safe for you there, anymore. Now they'll be able to use the deaths of those monks as reason to retaliate against you, and this time they won't have to operate in the dark. You're only true protection right now is that our monastery is small and it will take time for the new abbot to gather allies. I'll speak for you, but my word only carries so far outside a healing ward.

"Mr. Star, if you can, please take Emery with you. He's a stubborn child and prone to tantrums, but we've done our best to show him the proper path. I cannot go with you. I am needed too much where I am, but my prayers go with both of you."

Emery sat silent through this, feeling tears beginning to grow in her eyes. She was glad to be leaving the monastery, a place that felt like a sweater she'd been forced to wear years after she'd outgrown it, but Brother Kelloc was one of the few people she felt she could turn to for help and a listening ear. She'd moved to new places a great deal with her mother, but it never hurt to leave someone behind like this.

"Emery, you need to be good for Mr. Star, alright?" Brother Kelloc said, resting a hand on her black hair. "Listen to what he says and stay with him. He can protect you, so don't make it difficult for him. Can you do that?"

"I'll try..." Emery said, determined not to cry.

"Best I can ask for," he said with a smile. "Centaurs are good people, from what I've read and the few I've met. Just listen to Mr. Star and I'm sure you'll do well."

Ajax stood as the healer spoke. He could feel their short meeting come to a close. Ajax thought that it would be good for Emery to have seen the healer before they left this area for good. "I was already on taking him with me to my village. I'm sure that my sister can help take care of that." There was a small hint of a joke in Ajax's eyes, but for the most part he was being serious. "She has kids of her own. I'm sure one more won't make to much a difference." Again, slight joke.

As Ajax wrapped the rest of the squirrel meet, Emery said his good bye to the healer. He told Emery to be good, and to do what Ajax had said. Ajax heard a small noise during their good bye. He wasn't sure what it was. Ajax pulled out his bow, and an arrow, and took slow, quiet steps towards the noise. After a moment of hiding, Ajax shot out from behind a tree, and hit the bunny. Well, at least now they had more meat. Ajax walked up to the bunny, removed his arrow from its body and replaced it in the case, picked up the bunny's body, and placed it in his bag. He walked back over to Emery and the healer. The healer seemed to be giving Ajax a confused look. "Thought I heard something. Turns out it was just a bunny." Ajax explained.

After a moment, Ajax walked over to Emery. "It's time we where off. They might start sending out more men soon." Ajax said. He would help Emery on his back. Ajax would say good bye to the healer. "Thank you again for the supplies." Ajax said. Right before he took off, Ajax bowed to the healer with Emery on his back. Once he was back up straight, Ajax took off into the forest, heading the way he had been before.

He did not run as fast, but he ran at a speed that would save his stamina. During their trip, Ajax wouldn't say much. If Emery asked him a question, he would answer. But, for the most part, Ajax would be silent; saving up energy for the trip.

((I don't know you, but this seems like the end for me...I'll get the next topic started within the next couple days!))

Brother Kelloc watched the centaur disappear among the trees, Emery sitting like an ungainly bag of flour on his back. Well, the elf was staying on, and the healer was certain that at least this mount wouldn't buck him off. Overall, he felt, this was a fortuitous turn of events for young Emery, and the monk's mind drifted back to when the child first came to the abbey.

It had been nighttime, a rather pleasant late summer evening. By all rights, it should have been storming, the paladin who arrived with the sleeping child in his arms slicked with rain, heralded by lightning and thunder. There were no such atmospheric trappings as the boy, for Emery had been a boy at the time, was brought to the medical ward and his story shared, about how the paladin, one with a celestial being fused within his body, found the poor thing after defeating his polar opposite, one who'd accepted a demon to dwell within their soul. The child himself was untouched by any evil forces, and it was agreed by himself, the paladin, and the Abbot Harker that he'd be raised there, far from others, in the hopes that he was still young enough to learn another way.

The next morning when it was explained to the ignorant child that he'd be living here and that the one he called mother - perhaps she even birthed him. They'd never know now - was not coming back. He waited until they were gone to fully react, and when they returned they found the beds, stands, tables, everything shattered and splintered and torn. For the healer, the worst thing was the death of the small bird he was caring for. For the abbot, it was that, despite attempts to expain, the boy didn't seem to grasp why killing the bird was considered an evil thing.

He at least grasped that he'd done wrong and attempted to fix it, or so the healer had explained to Abbot Harker when the boy disappeared for a day, only to return with another bird, its wing freshly crumpled but still held gingerly in his hand. He offered it to Brother Kelloc as a replacement, proudly pointing out how he'd broken this bird's wing to match. The abbot nearly gave up on the boy that day, certain there was no hope in reforming him. But, as Brother Kelloc pointed out, even if he failed to understand why, and even though his actions weren't correct, the boy had understood that wrong was done and attempted to mend it without prompting.

That didn't mean that others accepted the boy. From his appearance to his abrasive manner and tantrums to his, to some, distressing habit of turning female in a sanctuary for men. He'd gotten better, so much better, but it seemed that old hatred of his origins still stood, and their new abbot, he was certain, was the heart of it.

The monastery drew into sight, guards at the entrance. He could already hear commotion within. Emery's disappearance and the death of those sent after him much have spread. He eschewed the front door, instead slipping in a back way to avoid those watching the front. It led into his small herbal garden, now dead and covered in snow. He sighed. He'd have little impact, but he'd do what he could for the little dark elf from here. The rest would be up to Ajax and the boy himself. He muttered a quick prayer before heading inside.
