| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

Her family's unique circumstances necessitated that she travel alone this time. Running through the swordsmanship forms on the deck of the airship got boring after a while, though, so Allison instead sat cross-legged in the shade and pulled out her papers. After flipping through the bundle, she reached a blank page and got to work on a new sketch. This dragon, if her memory served correctly, lived in the North Reaches -- her current destination. The graphite beast curled menacingly along the page, gaining more details as the hours passed. No one gave the girl trouble. As the ferry drew closer Allison became content with simply staring out at the impressive scenery of the mainland, resting her head on her arms which were folded over the railing of the airship. It would be another hour or two before they would dock at Striberg itself, the famous floating city. Wandering out of the port tower, Allison retrieved the letter from her satchel with her free hand -- the one that wasn't gripping the sword sheathe -- and tried her best to smooth out the creases. She managed to decipher her father's messy penmanship and went off to find the address he included. The house looked innocuous enough, and Allison approached the front door without hesitation. She knocked twice, took a step back, and waited patiently. This "Lumi Kirsikka," as the letter had recognized her, looked a lot younger than Allison expected. She could have only been a couple years older than her, for all she knew. Even though Allison had her doubts as to whether this was the most prudent decision her father had ever had, she said nothing when the woman in question answered the door, only handing her the letter. In it, her father introduced himself as a frequent customer of Lumi's company, Kirsikka Enterprises. His wording implied they knew each other well and were on friendly terms. He went on to explain that his daughter Allison had surpassed her childhood mentor and needed advanced training in swordsmanship. Sizeable compensation was offered. Allison watched Lumi read the letter, weakly smiling. It wasn't until now that she realized how unpresentable she looked; the girl had been traveling from one ferry to another for a couple days and had kept a more comfortable wardrobe the whole way. Her generally frumpy appearance, hair pulled into a messy ponytail and satchel with a large bundle of papers poking out of it didn't help with this image. She hoped her potential teacher wouldn't just turn her down at the front door for this; Allison needed this more badly than anything. |

Lumi started her morning with a cup of tea and a hearty Striberg style lump of meat. She read through the news the earliest ship had brought, detailing shipments made and the amount of market control she was gaining. One of her distant Istani merchants thought she should move into their market more. It was a good idea, if not risky and expensive. Istani smiths were some of the best, and the Istani martial tradition begged for high quality, custom made weapons. A knock rang out on her door and she immediately stood to answer it. Opening the door she was presented with a homely dressed young lady with a note in hand. Lumi snatched the note and read it. "Oh! Yes, the Balan family," Lumi said, folding up the note. There was considerable compensation promised, and an order for a top of the line blade in mercantile code. Allison probably had not spotted the clever little combination of words. "Allison, you want to be the top girl in your family, eh? Well, we'll need more than just swordsmanship. We need to fix how you present yourself. If it wasn't for this note I would have kicked you off my doorstep," Lumi said. She drew the girl within with a flash of light blonde hair, and stood her out in the middle of her parlor. "Before I help you with that longsword, you must be taught poise and grace, since you don't have an ounce. We'll begin with footwork and rapier work, and every night you'll work in the forge. Nothing hard, just to build up your arm strength and get some calluses going." Lumi explained. She would also have to teach the girl how to do her hair, but that could come slowly. She walked next to her fireplace and drew out one of the cast iron implements. Lumi flipped it around and handed it to Balan handle first. Lumi removed a different implement, and threatened Allison with a quick wiggle. "And no, we won't move the furniture. If you trip over it, its your own damn fault. Mimic my movements and keep aware of the field." Lumi said. She promptly lunged out at Balan, stepping forward gracefully as she did. |

Balan's smile became tinged with relief when Lumi recognized the letter. The expression dulled again when her new mentor explained herself, though. Even though Allison had already been aware of the state of her appearance, it only deepened her feelings of shame when Lumi spoke bluntly about it. The only reason she was still standing on the silver-haired woman's doorstep was her father's letter. She followed her new mentor into the extensive parlor of the house and remained at attention for any further instructions. Lumi explained that her training would not be easy, which Balan expected and would not complain about -- this was a kindness, after all. What Allison didn't expect was for the training to start immediately. She lowered her things to the floor and took the fire poker from her new teacher's hand. Any sort of rapier work, including fire pokers, was nothing like any of the training she had received as a child. Allison understood that a rapier was designed for thrusting rather than slashing, but wasn't experienced with any of the intricacies at all. And Lumi didn't give her time to prepare, either. Allison barely avoided being stabbed by the cast-iron implement by twisting her whole body to the side, nearly stepping on her satchel of possessions. She recovered, made sure she wasn't going to run into anything, and moved further away from her stuff, trying her best to keep on the defensive all the while. Lumi's vastly superior combat prowess let her easily tear through Balan's defenses. The girl took painful hits to the ribs and legs especially. In the one instance where she attempted to go on the offensive -- having worked herself into a frustrated, pseudo-berserk state from all the hits -- her teacher turned everything around on her. The fire poker went flying across the parlor. Allison tripped and fell back onto a large couch in the room. Lumi's implement pressed hard into her throat, and she gulped sheepishly. |

Lumi grinned from her position atop the coffee table. "You handled that better than some mewling noble brat. Didn't whine about how their ribs were most certainly broken and how I was most certainly going to get it when their daddy heard all about this." Lumi said, leaning forward. She flicked away the implement, and removed the weight from her foot. With a flick she sent it sailing perfectly into its holster. "Allison, I can teach you. I'll make you the finest damn swordsman to ever cross Imythess. Of course, you'll also know how to forge your own blades when I'm done with you." Lumi explained. She herded the noble girl upstairs, where she dressed her up in a long double breasted coat, and a pair of thick boots. "They keep saying the magical warmth of Striberg is a constant, but it isn't. You'll be quite uncomfortable in that. Plus, you look like a little feminine! You've got curves, wear something that suits them." Lumi said. She herded the girl back downstairs and down the street a little, to a massive warehouse-style building. Smoke billowed out from massive vents in the roof, and there was a near constant flow of people in and out. They entered through a side door, and several heads twisted to observe the boss. A chorus of "Mornin' miss Kirsikka"s rang out, and Lumi waved back. "Good morning! This is Allison Balan, she's going to be an apprentice with you folk at night and me in the morning." Lumi explained. She brought Allison down the line of forges, pausing in the middle. The woman who worked the glanced at Lumi as she quenched the blade. "Jaime, this is your new apprentice. She has no interest in actually becoming a swordsmith, but she wants to be a swordsman. Treat her delicately, but make sure she starts burning off the excess of nobility." Lumi explained. Jaime shrugged and handed Lumi the bastard sword she had just finished. The blonde twirled it about, rolling the flat of the blade around her forearm. The sword practically danced in her hands. "Brilliantly balanced! You can go home, I'm switching you to the afternoon and night shift. Allison will join you in the afternoon and after dinner." Lumi ordered. Jaime shrugged once more and began work on tempering the blade. Lumi looked to Allison. "How does lunch sound?" Lumi asked. |

Allison nervously tugged at her new clothing, but tried to keep her hands off whenever Lumi looked in her direction. It wasn't uncomfortable, just different. She'd get used to it. The noble girl bent to pick up her satchel, wincing from the pain in her severely bruised ribs, and continued after her new training master. She was almost completely silent during the tour of the forges, merely nodding or confirming orders and greeting everyone Lumi introduced her to. Balan bowed her head respectfully at Jaime. "It will be a pleasure to work with you, ma'am." Lumi intended to be very thorough with her training, and Allison was quite impressed with how extensive and difficult it would be -- and how much she would learn. 'Making Allison the best damn swordsman in Imythess' wasn't a boast at all. She snapped out of her thoughts when Lumi asked her about lunch. "Lunch sounds good," Balan responded in her usual even tone. She followed her new master to lunch and ate quietly. |

Lumi brought Balan to a little open-front store that sold fried fish. They sat beneath a colorful awning, Lumi nibbling on a filet of haddock with light breading. She motioned across to a storefront across the street. In the front window a variety of flashy swords were on display. Hanging from above was a heavily stylized title, Kirsikka Shoppe. A smaller set of letters beneath it simply stated "A Division of Kirsikka Enterprises". "That's our only proper storefront. Kirsikka Enterprises deals primarily in special orders or bulk orders. The store is simply so smithing time doesn't get wasted." Lumi explained. Their meal was quick and simple. After, Lumi brought the girl into the store, explaining all the individual functions of a mundane business. Then they left, and walked to the docks. Lumi motioned to a great building, a massive warehouse that opened directly to a massive wharf. A dozen ships of various sizes were docked, except for the largest at the very end. Across its bow were the massive words Valtameri, with a smaller heading of Kirsikka Enterprises. "The wharf is mine. The ship at the end is our newest acquisition and the only boat I have ever personally ordered. She's protected by a quarter inch of steel. I have yet to buy her any armaments, the authorities denied my first request." They boarded the ship. Lumi wobbled slightly on the black deck, her normal walk turned into a demonstration of hip swagger. She turned around and handed Balan a full sized sword from a locked chest on the deck. "Don't draw it, dear. Simply take a sword stance as best you can. I'll demonstrate." Lumi explained. She promptly took up a stance that was unaffected by the sway of the ship. If Balan's imitation was poor, she was liable to fall over. If she did fairly well, Lumi would correct her on the final details. "Okay, dear. These weapons are sheathed but consider them dangerous. A longsword is a club with blades, and with a sheathe it is simply a club. You can hurt me or yourself pretty badly." Lumi said, drawing out a longsword of her own. She went through a set of movements, explaining the purpose of every single one in depth. After about an hour of swinging swords at the air, Lumi tapped the tip of her blade. "En guarde, girl! I'm going to be gentle. This is just to teach you how to swing. We'll do some actual sparring once you are proficient enough to not hurt yourself. I'm aware you had a trainer before, but dear, I'm not going to take a risk and break a rib by mistake." Lumi explained. She advanced forward, smashing into Balan's sword in a whirl of skirts and scarfs. "Parry! Don't let me cut a pretty red rose in you!" |

The orientation with Lumi's entire business over lunch was a lot more than Balan expected, but she paid close attention. This sort of thing would be important to know. Eventually they reached the Valtameri, Kirsikka's company ironclad. It was a beautiful, humongous ship that Allison was eager to board. As a native Tarasian, Allison was perfectly fine on the deck of a ship, so her thoughts of worry were more directed toward the ensuing lesson. Allison took the best stance she had learned from her previous teacher and could copy from her current one, allowing her to balance pretty well on the ship and keep her from falling over. Lumi did end up correcting her on a few minor aspects of the positioning that she wasn't even taught before; then the actual training began. Allison took up her sheathed sword and held it in both hands, brow furrowing slightly into a determined stare. She absolutely would not fail this time. The girl followed the motions as best as she could until Lumi's body language changed and she explained it was time to start sparring. Balan didn't question her teacher's promptness with the whole thing. Her trainer, as usual, was a lot faster and stronger than Balan ever expected. She landed a messy parry against the woman's club-sword and managed to hold her ground against another flurry of attacks. As she focused on the movements of the sword, she stepped slightly out of stance unknowingly. Edited by Balan, Wed Jan 4, 2012 4:53 pm.

Balan fell out of her stance ever so slightly. Lumi quickly moved around the girl, pinning her sword in place. With a deft hand she quickly adjusted her legs. "You have to keep your stance spread if you are fighting on the ground. The more comfortable distance you have between your legs, the better. The more space your body has to move. It will all come natural eventually. I'll be a little more gentle now. Focus on your stance first, dear." Lumi explained. She came at Balan much more gently. "Then as you learn it'll be come more and more natural to strike and parry while maintaining your stance." Lumi kept the girl's sword moving. "Then, you can learn to pay attention to the environment. Be acutely aware of every change and every detail. Everything you can use!" Lumi declared. The elemental's eye snapped to the side as soon as she realized that Striberg was leaving them behind. She sprinted to the back with blinding speed, staring at the rapidly disappearing wharf. For a moment she contemplated rushing back immediately, but realized that she needed to be on the ship to keep Balan safe. She delicately checked he horizon and then returned to Balan. "Ah, it appears that the ship has gotten loose. Someone will come to collect us in a few days I'm sure." Lumi reassured Balan while motioning below deck. The two walked downstairs and Lumi quickly hunted amongst the well stocked kitchen, producing a small vegetarian dinner. "The Valtameri needs about eighty to operate it. We'll manage." Lumi walked onto deck again, and sat down next to the locked ship's wheel. "We'll take a long route to turn gently, then follow the coast of Imythess until we get to the Striberg Straight, then we'll head straight to the city. I, uh, want somewhere safe to learn how to turn the Valtameri around. Somewhere warmer." Lumi said, betraying her lack of knowledge of how to operate the great black ship. |

When Lumi paused to check the side of the boat, Balan's eyes followed. They quickly widened upon realizing that the ship was adrift. Could someone have cut the rope after seeing them board? Would anyone be that malicious? Allison looked to her master for guidance as to how to react to this sudden change of plans. Lumi seemed calm enough as it was, explaining the situation delicately to the girl and how it could be fixed. Seemed easy enough; Balan hid her lingering doubts about their ability to singlehandedly maneuver a massive warship with no experience. If they were to crash the Valtameri, it would be Balan's fault practically -- it was her training that got them up here. "I'm so sorry," her soft voice interjected Lumi's attempts to control the ship. She kept her eyes focused low, hands clasped together into a nervous wringing gesture. Balan would have asked to help with the sails or something, but she didn't know a thing about how to actually work even the smallest ship. "Is there anything I can do in the meantime?" Lumi glanced over to Balan, quietly eating her food. "Don't be sorry, my guards are incompetent. The wharf was supposed to be patrolled all day and the gates guarded. Someone failed me. In the meantime, we'll continue your training and learn how to work the Valtameri." Lumi said. She stood up and waved Balan down for the night. "Go to sleep, dear, just wake up bright and early so you can take over running the ship for me tomorrow." Lumi ordered. The next morning, Lumi found herself wrapped up in blankets in the corner of her ship's aftcastle. A seagull flew by overhead. Lumi awoke with a start and realized that not only had she slept, she had slept through the Valtameri getting caught in a powerful current. The moment she spotted Balan she waved the girl over. "Look, I can't work a sea chart and we've moved farther than expected overnight. Take the ship's wheel, I'll unfurl the sails." Lumi explained. She darted off to the middle sails of the ship, and clambered up the massive rigging. She stumbled about trying to work with the sails, slowly managing to get the massive pulleys and complex knots apart. Half of the sail fell, causing the entire ship to tilt. Lumi darted to the other side and repeated the same action with more than a few fumbles. The rest of the sail fell, and then filled immediately with air. A pleasant creaking of rope and timbers applauded her success as she climbed to the next level. In the distance, black sails rose. Lumi paused as the skull and crossbones became fully apparent. "Balan! The Valtameri is too slow to evade that ship without rowers. Head straight at them! I'll get all the sails open. And I mean straight at them, an ironclad can crush a wooden ship in a direct collision!" Lumi ordered. |

Balan slept soundly through the night; she had had an incredibly long day. She woke up at the crack of dawn the next morning to sound of commotion outside. Allison fumbled to put her hair up into a ponytail and put on some practical clothing before she emerged from the cabin onto the deck. Lumi informed her of the situation and she quickly got to work gripping the wheel of the ship. It didn't seem too complex to handle, especially since she was just forcing the craft to go straight, right into the side of a pirate ship nearing them. Balan looked back to see how Lumi was doing. That white-haired woman was becoming a lot more familiar to her even over this short period of time; she was almost looking at her master like a valuable ally, even a friend, rather than simply a clear-cut superior. But she trusted her judgment and allowed her to learn the works of the sail. As the Valtameri drew within range, the pirate ship trained their ballistae on the ironclad. The world became pure noise as the equipment shot and ammunition bounced off the steel hull. Balan focused only on going forward, closer, drawing dangerously close to the side of the enemy craft... They collided with a tremendous lurch of wood. The pirate ship was utterly torn apart by the warship. Pirates manning the decks either abandoned ship or jumped onto the Valtameri. Balan let go of the wheel and drew her sword as three pirates approached. She remembered Lumi's instructions about her stance, trying to call upon her muscle memory to slide her legs into the proper position. This wasn't just sparring anymore; one slip-up and she'd be dead. A cutlass lashed out; she parried it perfectly, stepped forward, maintained her stance and launched a riposte that impaled him clean through the chest. She was so surprised by her success that she fumbled on the follow-through, unable to remove her weapon so heavily embedded in her enemy. He managed to cut her across the arm as a final parting shot before she kicked him off of her sword. The cut was shallow and stung quite a bit, but she had no free hands to stop the bleeding. Instead, she tried to force the pain to the back of her mind. She had no time to prepare properly for the attacks of the others -- and there were more than two now as pirate after pirate took the leap onto the Valtameri. One pirate coming in from the back landed a nasty pommel strike on her kidney, staggering her, but she barely managed to duck out of the way of three more blades converging at the same time on her neck. Balan stumbled and backed up far, holding out her sword in a traditional grip, watching every grinning pirate's steps. "Lumi?" she shouted, but didn't take her gaze away from the fight. Lumi struggled with the main mast's sails. Each finished sail noticeably increased the speed of the Valtameri. She flew across the gap to the first set of sails and worked quickly as the pirate ship rapidly approached. A few arrows whipped by her as she worked. Moments later the entire ship shook. Lumi glanced down. The Valtameri's keel surged over that of the pirate ship, catching it midships. The two struggled for a moment before buoyancy and gravity worked together to snap the pirate ship in two. The Valtameri crashed back into the water, raising spray and water in a massive surge. Lumi clung on desperately, her legs flailing off into the void with the impact. Things began to settle almost immediately, allowing Lumi time to look around. She glanced down and realized a handful of the pirates not only survived but were actively swimming towards the ship. Lumi stepped off the mast and fell, gently landing on the ground. She drew her rapier, Graceless, and in the same smooth motion lunged forward, sticking the weapon through one of the pirate's throats. He gurgled, her blade tip flicked out the side of his neck. She quickly turned, slashing a slim line of red in the next pirate's arm. He howled, but she followed it with a quick stab through the chest. A blade fell in her peripheral vision, and without blinking she flawlessly parried it, reacting with a slash across the man's gut. He doubled over as Lumi stepped into him, jamming the full length of Graceless through his stomach, before kicking him off. She turned to see Balan overwhelmed by fighters. It made sense to attack the aftcastle. Lumi stepped once, a snap resounded through the air. Instantly she had traversed, impaling one of the men through the back. The others became aware of the woman instantly, but were far too slow. The blade lashed out four times before they could blink. One found his hamstrings severed and an artery in his arm cut, the other took two quick and brutal stabs to the lower back. "Ah, good to see you aren't badly injured Balan. If you wouldn't mind, would you nip on down below deck and check the front of the ship for leaks? I'll clear the bodies off. Medical supplies should be in the room labeled surgery - you'll go right by it if you go below deck in the forecastle." Lumi explained. She stabbed Graceless into the deck and began shifting half dead pirates into the ocean. |

Balan could only stare in awe at how effortlessly her master took down the remaining pirates. She actually lowered her weapon slightly so she could watch that dancing blade easier. Lumi asked her to check for leaks below deck and pointed out where the medical supplies were, to which Allison nodded. "Okay." Then she made haste to the forecastle. After a bit of digging she procured a roll of bandage that she wrapped around the bleeding cut on her arm. Once that was done, she rushed down below deck to check if the pirate ship had broken through the Valtameri's armor plating. Thankfully, it hadn't, and she moved back to the aftcastle to check on Lumi's progress with the bodies. "No leaks," she said, helping her master heft the last pirate's body overboard. "What now? Do we know where we are, even?" |

Lumi checked over Balan's injuries, and then smiled. "You did good! We got outnumbered, neither of us died." Lumi commended. From behind her came a yowl, a hungry yowl. She turned quickly to look at her lynx, a gorgeous black furred feline. Kiva was mostly grown, but she still acted like a kitten because of her master's tendency to spoil her. "Kiva! Darling, I didn't know you hid out on the Valtameri! We'll catch some fish for you, sweety. Balan, take the wheel and take us...to, uh, port side! Port, yes. That's on your left as you look towards the bow of the ship." Lumi explained quickly, avoiding the more pertinent question Balan brought up. The merchant experimentally threw a few of their large fishing nets into the water and watched them drag behind the ship. After a few days of travel, they came across an island that couldn't have been more than four miles wide, and it featured a stumpy little mountain covered with scraggly firs. A few massive burn zones dominated the island, as did cliffs. A few plumes of smoke rose from the island. Several near the burn zones and a singular, larger one at the very peak. It wasn't until they took the ship fully around that they found a natural harbor with a small beach. The two took the ship in with little difficulty. "We'll go ashore and see if there's any good game to hunt quickly. I'm getting sick of fish. We'll also see if there's anything else on the island, eh?" Lumi suggested. She loaded Kiva into the longboat first, struggling with the fair sized cat's weight. She then helped Balan in and lowered the boat with the complex set of mechanisms designed to let it be raised and lowered with as few people as possible, or even from within the longboat. The longboat touched water and Lumi motioned for Balan to disengage the ropes. She quickly winched everything back up into the ship, and then vaulted over the side. With grace she landed in the longboat, and then quickly moved to help Balan with the oars. After a short row, the two reached land. They quickly dragged the jolly boat above the tide line, and then set off into the island. Kiva darted off into the woods. "Kiva is a smart girl, don't worry. I just hope she'll hunt some. Now, let's get moving up this mountain. I expect its volcanic, and at least somewhat active thanks to those plumes of smoke. There should be something worth doing here." Lumi said. She hoped to find water, perhaps an abandoned settlement. Edited by Quinn, Thu Jan 5, 2012 9:03 pm.

Balan learned a lot in just a few days. They passed most of the time by sparring, but the girl had been lucky enough to have her drawing pad with her so she could sketch during downtimes. She managed to finish the elaborate northern dragon she had been working on during the airship ride to Striberg and was starting on a portrait of Lumi's pet lynx, Kiva. Allison had really taken a liking to the cat, although she tried to keep this from her master. She loved stroking its soft black fur or watching it stalk across the ship eating mice. So when it was just her and Kiva together on the longboat for a while, Balan couldn't help but take on a smile that was unbecoming of her stoic nature. She scratched the cat behind its tufted ears whenever it passed near to rub its body across her legs while she helped Lumi with the whole ordeal. They reached the island and Balan inelegantly clambered onto shore to help Lumi pull the craft onto land. She brushed her hands together and looked to her master for more directions. |
