It had been a good few days of journey, but eventually the Angel who held back the evils of Diana Sin found her way to the City of Taras, which was slowly being reborn. There were the unmistakable signs of underlying corruption, but the angel preferred to look on the happy faces of those hopeful people who saw their city slowly coming back, which in truth still outnumbered the faces of those who would have liked to avoid attention as much as possible. The angel had a cloak on to hide her wings, not wanting to attract too much attention as anything more then a good Samaritan out to help the city get back on it's feet. Much as she tried to not seem too out of the ordinary, it was harder to hide her bright silvery hair and otherworldly beauty. Many eyes followed her, as though entranced by her presence. She did not pay those looks too much mind. "I wonder where we ask to help," she wondered to her companion. She knew she would have gotten here faster alone with just her wings, but she liked having a companion in Shan more then getting there a little faster. She looked around and saw a line of people signing a sheet. "I suppose this must be how." She stood in line and waited her turn, and when finally they got to the front, there were two lists, one with names and the other with a list of places that needed help. "Where shall it be?" asked the man at the desk, barely avoiding gasping at the looks of the woman before him. The angel ran her finger over the list for a time. She found her finger wandered to the Orphanage, which did not seem to have many volunteers. "What do you think?" she asked her companion. "They could use some help." Her bright smile met Shan. |

The vampire turned angel Diana was puzzling for Shan. His memories of the woman consisted of her forcing him out of her carriage at swordpoint, leaving him at the mercy of a vicious marsh rat, luring him into a hotel room, and draining him to unconsciousness. In other words, none of them were angelic. His sudden rescue at her hands and subsequent not being fed on presented evidence that the magic ring she accidentally donned had caused a change of heart. It was the suggestion that, instead of, say, fighting bandits or rebuilding key buildings to adjust blueprints to her liking, she wanted to help the children who, thanks to the protective nature of parents, were now orphaned and with no one to care for them. That was as far from the old Diana that Shan could think of, except perhaps if there were also sad, one-legged puppies to feed. "Well, I have no problem with it," Shan said. "Um..." Shan's eyes lifted to the volunteer overseeing the lists. "Where do we go to help with the orphanage?" "It's being built on what used to be Evering Avenue. Just head down to that corner, take a left, go down seven blocks, turn left, and it'll be on our right. Speak to Shiloh Moss, the short one. She's organizing it." "Building? Huh. Well, my mother always said you had to be prepared to pull some muscles. Should we go, Diana?" Shan asked, heading down to the indicated corner. "Um," Shan said once the line was a bit away. "So, just so I'm prepared in case we need to start running from guards, did you...ah...old Diana...get into any trouble here that you might be remembered for?" The angel happily signed her name and what project she was working on, and then went with Shan on their way to the Orphanage in the making. Shan whispered to her as they went, nervous about the activities of Diana Sin. "She stayed on the highways, she shouldn't be wanted in cities like Taras," said the angel, quite calm and certain she would not be looked for. "Even if she was, I honestly look different enough that I think I could very well deny being her if there still was any trouble. Diana has robbed and killed a good few though, I suppose some here at Taras might have a price on her." She honestly hope the sins of her past would not haunt her here, and would not interfere in the good she could do. Luckily, as they happened to pass a wall of wanted posters, there did not seem to be any for 'Diana Sin', nor any posters of mysterious character who matched her in looks. There was however a familiar brown haired woman given the name 'Lena Nis' that she eyed with a moment of realising Diana Sin had used many disguises and aliases before. She decided not to draw Shan's attention to that in the hopes of keeping him at ease in the city. There was so little likelihood that she would be found out to be that one person who stole gold so long ago. Nearing the orphanage, they discovered the place was not too far along at all, and the thought that this place would need help. There was some foundation set, but outside of that it seemed there were not much else done and there was a short, exasperated looking woman. "Surely someone would come out just for the sake of the common good," she said to herself, sounding tired. "Sure, it's not as exciting as the arena..." "Sounds like we're the common good," said the angel cheerfully, walking up to say, "Out for the sake of the common good and at your service. Shiloh Moss, I presume?" |

"Yeh, that's me," the woman replied. She certainly was short. From the tip of her bandana bound head to the soles of her thick leather boots, she barely reached Shan's waist. "So, you two are seriously here to help with the orphanage? 'Cause that's where you are. Arena's a bit further on." "No, we're in the right place," Shan said with a friendly grin. Shiloh Moss looked less than impressed. "So, what is it you two do for a living?" she asked. "I'm a bard," Shan answered. "The name's Shan. This is Diana. She's...a traveling knight errant," he said, not sure what precisely to say for her, but "knight errant" sounded about right for now. "Bard?" Ms. Moss said with a sniff. "Well, you're going to get into some hard work here. There's no lyre plucking in construction. We've got the plans drawn up, but don't ask architects to actually lift a hammer, lazy bastards." She sniffed. "Not sure what a knight errant is, but you've got some muscle on you, at least," she said to Diana. "More than Bean Pole here, which isn't hard." "Um, I'm not adverse to hard work, Ms. Moss," Shan said. "That's why I'm here. And for the record, I play the violin." "Right, right. Sorry about the surliness. I've met the poor tykes that lost their parents two years ago or never knew them to begin with. It's the reason why I volunteered to head this. Except I keep running into folks who are asking 'Where's the area project?' 'Is this where we turn in bounties?' Even had a bloke ask how much money it'll be to have a turn with me. I gave him a headbutt in the groin for free. There's plenty of advantages of being low to the ground. I should be less picky about folks who actually give a damn about those children. "So, then, we're setting up support beams right now. Gotta put up the bones of the house first. Diana, you'll be helping me with the rigging and settling the beams in place. Bean Pole, for now you'll be our fetcher. Get us what we need so we can concentrate on not getting squashed by falling beams." "Um...It's Shan, actually..." "Got a problem with bean poles? I happen to like beans." "Nothing wrong with bean poles. Nothing at all." "Good. Get us that bag of tools and bring them over. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work, people." |

Diana nodded that she certainly looked strong, especially when compared to Shan. Truth be told, while she was not yet one of the great masters of swordsmanship, Diana had long been a very strong women even when she was human. The angel felt it was quite possibly Diana had been one of the strongest women in the world, able to match muscle with men easily. And yet she still always used the Draconic Might spell to get more strength. As she thought about it now, that seemed odd. It just seemed like a good idea most of the time before. She noted to herself she should try to learn more useful spells in the future. The angel worked with their new short boss, and did not comment against calling Shan names if only to not peeve the woman by defending him. Her name calling at least seemed light hearted enough to not make an issue out of it as they worked. Shiloh Moss would be surprised to see just how strong Diana really was, able to easily move the support beams. She also seemed to have some grasp of where and how to place the beams with only minimal instruction. So well did the work go that they had done the work of at least seven men in a day, the night coming too soon. Diana was determined to not leave this unfinished, but could not resist the call to get a meal and some rest. As they sat to eat, the angel that was Diana thought of conversation. "Who's paying for the orphanage, anyway?" she asked. Diana had known those that funded the process of rebuilding Taras were often of ill repute, and the angel in her place wondered what sort of noble paid for this. Most people would not have wasted their gold on the poor and helpless street urchins left behind in the destruction of the city. "Unless you are paying for this out of pocket yourself. I have not known the wealthy to share so easily." |

The work was, indeed, hard and involved no lyre plucking. It was hard, back breaking work, even though Shan's role was mostly that of fetching and holding things still. Ms. Moss continued to call him Bean Pole, but the tone shifted as the day past. The fact that he was doing his share and not slacking off shifted the moniker from an insult to a nickname. What shocked both of them was how strong Diana was, easily shifting heavy lumber about that Ms. Moss had planned to set up a pulley system to move. Granted, it shouldn't have been that big a surprise to the bard. He knew how strong that grip was. Some of his nightmares involved being trapped by her in Balefire, except instead of holding him in place, she kept squeezing into he was crushed in two. And that would turn out to be the better part. It would be best to never tell Diana that, his second thoughts noted. Either of them. Finally, the sun sank low to the horizon, and it became too dark to work. Shan gratefully flopped down, happy for the sandwiches and slightly bruised fruit Ms. Moss had with her. "Who's paying for the orphanage, anyway?" Diana asked after the food had been passed around. "Unless you are paying for this out of pocket yourself. I have not known the wealthy to share so easily." Shan kept eating. That was the sort of question he'd never think to ask, but he also didn't have an answer. "Normally, that's true," Ms. Moss said as she sliced an apple for herself. "But most nobs still like to pretend they're good folks, watching out for the deserving poor and all, and money for Taras has been coming in spurts and squirts. Big things like the arena and the theater and the like, things that make money, you can bet most of its funds are filthier than dirt. But for things like the orphanage, well...The nobs hold charity balls and the like, but that's mostly to show off how rich they are, and most of the money goes toward holding the ball, to be honest. So most of it comes from 'anonymous donations.'" Here Ms. Moss winked. "Not too anonymous, mind you. Just enough so that when it's found out who gave such a large sum to the poor orphans of Taras, the nob in question can not only be seen as generous and charitable, but humble, too. It's all part of their politics. You even see some of the scummy crime lords using their cleaner funds that way to make themselves seem not so bad. "'Course, we had to spend most of it on permits, building supplies, and helping the orphans stay warm and fed until they get a permanent roof. The architects at least volunteered to make the blueprints, though like I said don't ask them to hammer a nail. And for building it, we're also having to rely on volunteers, but just donating time and sweat isn't as swanky as donating money, so there you are. "You two have a place to sleep tonight? You can camp out here if you want. I'm afraid all the beds I oversee are filled and overfilled. I'll write out a chitty so the guards don't harass you for loitering." |

The angel did not quite understand why humans so used each other the way they did, but she nodded as though that made sense. She could hear Diana in her head now, complaining of the nobles and men in charge. The angel tried to ignore her whispering in her head, but thought Diana would be just as bad and made those thoughts well known to Diana, which seemed to shut her up. Diana Sin had no ability to deny she was a monster, and perhaps she would make Diana see the reasons to change yet some day. "We do not have anywhere to stay, yet, no," answered Diana to her question. She looked at Shan with the offer to camp there. "That would be lovely, are you alright with that, Shan?" Considering both she and Shan were pretty used to wandering from town to town, she assumed that would be fine with him, though he might have preferred the warm bed of an inn. She thought about things as she waited for Shan's answer, namely about the orphans themselves. Truly she was in the presence of a saint of a woman, someone who worked hard on the orphanage by day and worked hard to keep them cared for while she could. It was a lot for one person to take, and Ms. Moss took it in stride, even allowing her work to be played with as a political tool just to get the job done for the poor dears. It was nice to meet such a shining beacon in what might appear a very dim world at times. |

"I don't mind," Shan said. "I've slept in worse places. As long as the guards don't bother us." He looked up at the sound of rumbling. Along with the setting sun, the sky grew darker with grey clouds rolling across the sky. It had been fair the entire trip up to Taras, so the fact they left behind the bandits stinky and possibly infested tent hadn't been a concern. Now Shan wished they had brought it. He'd be willing to hold his nose and risk a few fleas if it meant staying warm and dry. "Storm's brewing," Ms. Moss said, looking at the sky. "I'll send someone along with a tent and an official note from me saying to leave you two alone." "Um, can you send two tents?" Shan asked. He still hadn't brought himself to sleep closer to Diana than across the fire. It was probably just his paranoia overruling his common sense, but a part of him still worried about the newfound angel losing her ring and completing what she started in Balefire, and not the fun bit. The possibly killing him bit. "What? You two aren't..." Ms. Moss began. "Well, I'll see what I can do, but you might have to put that old time chivalry aside if you don't want to sleep in the rain. Just wait here. Storm won't hit for another hour or so. Good night, you two." Shan watched Ms. Moss's retreating back, rubbing a sore muscle in his arm. He hoped she did have two tents to spare. He'd been having those dreams courtesy of his Shadow side every night he'd been with Diana. He knew there was no way anything could happen between them, even if his Shadow somehow grabbed the reins and tried something lewd. Toothpicks do poorly against women who were swinging around support beams all day and didn't break a sweat. "So..." Shan said as the silence stretched. "How are you holding up, Diana? And, um, how's other Diana doing, too, I guess." |

The angel looked up into the sky to see the darkening clouds coming as the sun was leaving. At least it had waited until the day was finished to rain upon them, but it would be a noisy sleep in the tents when they had them. Her eyes went back to Ms. Moss as she realized the two of them had not been an item. She would have said something about that, but it seemed easier to just let her move on. "Good night," she replied as the woman left and it was just her and Shan again. It seemed they would have to wait for a little while before getting tents to sleep in, and just hope the rain didn't come first. When Shan broke the silence she smiled at him brightly. "I feel great," she answered him joyously. "It's good to do something useful for someone. And Diana is just a little quiet right now. Which isn't a bad thing, though I am not sure if I should take it as a good thing. What about you?" She looked at her companion, knowing he had worked harder then he was probably used to. He had certainly done his part well enough, and he should be proud. A roar of thunder jolted the woman trapped within. She did not stir enough to alert the angel, but still she planned. She tested her limits in the prison the ring created over her. As a child, Diana had always heard of demonic possession, but she had never thought the opposite could have been possible. This wasn't quite the same since this was a product of magic. The angel only existed in combination of the rings magic and Diana's body, so it wasn't quite a possession, but it certainly felt like it. Perhaps angels did something like this to evil beings, taking over their bodies and becoming some great saints and heroes the same as demons seemed to like corrupting those they possessed. But Diana would not be held down for long. |

"A bit sore, but that's mostly because I was lifting things. Nothing that won't clear up on its own," Shan said, massaging a shoulder. His physical activities may include a great deal of running around, but most of the time he didn't lift anything heavier than his fiddle. Diana had done most of the heavy lifting with her immense strength, but the bard had been forced to do his share of pushing, pulling, and hauling. It was going to be painful tomorrow, he knew, but the soreness brought the quiet satisfaction of a hard day's work for an honest cause. "I don't know if Diana being quiet's good either," he admitted aloud. "I've been wrong before about...your state, so her being quiet could be her fuming silently, plotting silently, or just watching silently. I suppose as long as she's...I don't know...all right in there..." He trailed off, uncertain what to say. He admitted he liked the kinder, gentler Angel Diana, but a part of himself kept the fact that this wasn't really Diana in the forefront of his mind. Since the real Diana was a vampire, probable murderer, and thief, he wasn't eager to restore the status quo. And yet... Two figures walked up the street toward them. One looked to be a young boy, around twelve, with scraggly hair and the hardened look children on the streets get when they discover no one's watching out for them but themselves. The other looked to be a giant sack with legs. They stopped a few yards away from the two, the older boy watching cautiously. "Miz Moss says this is for you," said the older boy, indicating the sack with legs. "An' she said you'd give us a penny for it." "Bet a dollar she didn't," Shan said, walking forward and taking the sack, revealing a bundled up child of indeterminate gender. Thankfully, the sack seemed to only be cumbersome, not heavy. "I don't have any money on me anyway." "Wha...None?" the older boy asked. "Nope. Could get you two an apple or something." "Forget it," the boy said. "C'mon, Clare." The younger child stared at Diana with large, admiring eyes, the only part of its face visible between its hat and scarf. "'Ow'd you get so strong, Miss?" it asked in a muffled voice. Shan smiled. It seemed they'd been watched as they worked, and the angel Diana was certainly going to be the highlight of the spectacle. He checked inside the sack to ensure it was a bundled tent, pulling out a folded letter from Ms. Moss for any guards that questioned their presence. "I'll go set this up, then," he said, heading inside the construction site to be out of the way of traffic. He sighed as he realized that it was only one tent, albeit a large one. Well, he was just going to have to stuff his paranoia in a closet and deal with these events. The tent sent up, Shan started pulling out his blankets from his sack, hoping it would be enough to weather the damp chill that was already seeping the air. And if you can't sleep.. Oh, stuff it, Id, his anima growled. Let's just get some sleep before the muscle ache gets any worse. |

The angel turned to see two children coming to them, listening as they told of how Ms. Moss has sent them with the tent. She gave Shan a look when he he denied the kid any money for his work, but knew he was being honest when he said he did not have any money to give the pair. It wasn't Shan's fault he had nothing to pay, and it was wrong to lie just to make a little money, even if it was for the sake of survival. She gave the young child a smile. "I grew up rough, but ended up strong," she said. "You might too, but I hope you'll find more peaceful ways to find such strength in yourself, little one." Putting a hand in her pockets, she pulled out five pieces of gold and gave it to the youngest child. She then gave five more to the oldest. "Maybe next time you two can watch us in the open." She waved the pair off, telling them they should be under a roof before the storm hit and walked back to Shan. The angel saw the tent up, and popped her head in. "Only one tent, huh?" she said. "Guess we have to share this time." Since she knew this was unavoidable, she went away and moved her feathers over her form. She had a feeling it would be a little hard for her to sleep, and considering Shan's history with Diana he might not get much sleep either. Despite knowing this, she tried anyway with a small "Good night". Eventually she would fade into sleep, but it would not be restful as the raindrops hit the tent and she dreamed of Emily drowning her and Diana. She also rather loudly whimpered the name 'Emily', along with pleads for mercy, in her sleep. |

"Night," Shan said, settling down in his blankets. His head rested in his violin case, an old habit when a pillow was a hard thing to carry around and the loss of his livelihood was a constant worry. He thought he'd have trouble sleeping, but the beating of rain from the storm on the tent, the comfort of feeling warm when it was dismal out, and the life of travel he'd taken up that taught him to sleep anywhere caused him to settle and sleep more easily than he would have guessed. Diana curled her wings around her, warm inside her own feathery cocoon. Wonder what it's like, having your entire personality shifted like that, his curiously mused. Don't know, his second thoughts said, letting Curiosity have its way as Shan settled into dreams. Definitely would be strange for us, though really it would just be letting Shadow have the reins. And is that really so bad? Shan's Shadow asked. Lots of fun and profit in it. You could even start carrying around pennies for beggars, if you wished, since you'd just gut anyone trying to take your money by force. Like you'd give money to beggars. I might, Second Thoughts. I might. That doesn't mean I wouldn't make them earn it somehow, his Shadow laughed. Isn't that payment? Giving usually means there's no strings, right? Shadow sighed. You really over analyze everything, don't you. Curiosity? Shan was almost completely asleep when his ears heard whimpers and a voice calling out softly. Panic froze the bard as he listened for danger, but the voice remained stationary, a woman crying out in muted fear. His chivalry forced him awake as he made out the words. "Diana?" he said softly, shaking a wing with a gentle hand. "Diana? Wake up. You're having a nightmare." Wait, did she say Emily? Does she know Emily? Could be a different Emily, his Logic pointed out to his Curiosity. Best not to leap to conclusions. "Are you okay?" he asked, shaking the wing again. "Diana, wake up. It's just a dream." |

Diana awoke with a scream, and it just happened that thunder clapped above them as the exact same time. Without thinking she found herself clinging tightly to the only person around. "Please, stop, Emily!" she cried out, her voice just like a scared child begging some great monster to spare her from the torment it delivered her every night. It took a moment for her to realize she was grasping Shan, not Emily, and she had returned to the waking world. She let go the moment she realized she had returned. "S-sorry," she whispered, the drops of rain over the tent making her a little harder to hear when she wasn't screaming in terror. "Diana has bad nightmares, and we share them." The angel hugged herself lightly, letting the terror slowly ease out of her. "She hasn't slept well since she met that undead little girl." The angel could hardly stand to think about Emily, although truth be told the little girl probably would like the angel better then she did Diana. After all, she tormented Diana because Diana was a rather wicked sort of woman. The more moral angel would surely rate higher on the like list. Shaking her head of the thought, Diana tried to keep calm. |

Shan froze, his hands raised slightly as Diana clung to him. Yes, "clung" was a good word, or "deathgrip." That would also work. She screamed for Emily to stop...something right in his ear, distracting him from the fact that she was very close, very warm, and very soft... The barrier between dreams and reality broke down, and Diana pulled away, leaving Shan wondering if he should be glad about this or not. She apologized for the sudden embrace. "Diana has bad nightmares, and we share them," she said, holding herself. "She hasn't slept well since she met that undead little girl." Eh? Eh? his curiosity said. That...I'm sure there are plenty of young zombie girls named Emily, said his logic. Ones that can strike deep dread and fear in a powerful zombie lady....Yes, the coincidences have piled rather high. "It's, um, it's okay, Diana. I've had plenty of nightmares," Shan said aloud. "I know how terrifying they can be. This...um, this Emily...She sounds pretty frightening, if she scares Diana that much. Would it help if you talked about it? I know I tend to talk a lot, but I'm also a good listener." He was hesitant to mention he might know said Emily, especially since they were...well, he'd use the word "friend" since she seemed to like him and he seemed to get along with her for some reason. Bringing up his relationship with Emily at this point would probably be a poor choice until he could be absolutely certain they were talking about the same Emily. |

The angel looked at Shan, her mind now on the undead little girl that ruled her nightmares and nodded. "I think that might be a good idea," she said, though in her mind Diana was angry that her deepest fears would be spilled out to some little bard. "When Diana was human, not too long ago, she robbed people on the roads. Waiting in a tree, she jumped down to confront a little girl flanked by others. The little girl told the others to go, and then showed Diana that she wasn't really a little girl." The angel shivered, holding herself tight. "She sent spiders at her, played with her like this fight was just a game, and then webbed her to the tree and..." She paused, a memory of pain echoing into her gut and she found her hand over it. Lifting her shirt one could she two scars still there. "Sh-she cut her open, wrapped a knife in cloth and stuck it inside to keep her forever in discomfort for her wicked ways. Diana went a little crazy from the pain and tried to cut it back out. It's... still there." The angel winced as she moved. "It always hurts, but she's always been afraid to take it out, thinking Emily would punish her for it," she said. "She's had nightmares ever since, and has met Emily again as a Vampire, to be dominated, beaten in a fight and tortured once more. Emily says their the 'best of friends' and shows either a cold personality or a really girly but malicious one. It's the kind of thing that stays with her. And me." |
