Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Zenjirou growled as he kept his left eye closed, whenever it was open he had a tendency to move far to fast for his like, he sighed as he fitted his gauntlets onto his hands, he had recently lost a fight, it had made him angry, but now, he just didn't care, with his new speed the next time they fought would be a whole new game, he would not let her take distance to cast magic next time... next time he would stick to her and slash and slash, and slash, until she fell dead at his feet. He grimaced as he strapped on his three katanas on his hip, he left his scythe in the care of Lumi's thugs, they would keep it safe for him while he wandered the night. He opened the door and walked out, his thoughts drifted to Lumi... she seemed to be far to busy to be nearly as effective as before, he was fast, far to fast for most people and he was skilled beyond belief, he smirked, maybe he would test that theory tonight.

He stalked out of the old house he was sharing with some of Lumi's lackeys, probably to keep an eye on him, but it didn't matter, he could take care of all of them in seconds if he ever needed to cut and run. He chuckled as he walked through the clear streets, a light snowfall was making it through the wards of the city of magic, an early snow for an early murder, it would preserve the body nicely. He chuckled as he walked down the streets, the lights from the crystal street lamps reflected off of his obsidian skin, his red eyes shone in through the darkness of his skin, his left arm was red, it had taken in the pigment of blood, turning it into a natural bloody red. He smirked as he looked up, using on his eyes, he caught strands of blond, pink, and red hair, his odd combination kept most people at bay, his looks were usually enough to attract the women though, he looked exotic, he smirked, maybe he would kill a woman tonight.

Shan brought his hands up to his face, blowing a breath of warm air into the chilled fingers and rubbing them together to heat them up. It was a chilly, snowy night, cold enough he was wearing not only his fur coat but one of his caps, as well. Granted, they gave him rather pointy teeth and nails that would be more aptly called claws, but it kept his head warm. He was glad the city was warmer than the outside, but winter nights were cold when you only had the streets to wander.

Striberg was an amazing place, a floating city, but not floating like Cascadia. Actual floating took place here, on an iceberg, on the sea. It was called the City of Magic from the miraculous magic ice that prevented the destruction of this city long ago, but Shan wasn't having much luck performing tonight. His efforts to street perform were hampered by a snowfall that turned to rain, which ruins not only violins but outdoor crowds. He'd picked up enough to get a small meal, but Shan didn't have enough to get a room, and he hadn't been able to find a place that would trade playing for a bed or even a spot on the floor. He didn't have any contacts here, being new, and the whole ordeal was beginning to feel like the days when he first began barding.

Perhaps he could find an alley to sleep in. A raccoon resting under a fur coat in an alcove should be cozy enough until morning. He began wandering side streets and alleys, searching for someplace out of the way and relatively clean to rest for the night.

Zenjirou wandered the streets, he was bored, nobody was out this late at night, he could pay a visit to a tavern or a shadier establishment, but his black heart wasn't into it, he should just murder someone and go home... then a thought sparked in his head, why doesn't he do what Lumi did to him so long ago, hunt a single man down, make it impossible for him to find his to the main street, using his demonic power to make himself fast he could easily follow behind or even cut through other alleys and get ahead of him, make him run into areas he wanted him to, a happy grin pasted onto his obsidian face, yes, he would play a game tonight, one that would end in lots of blood, forget Lumi, she needed to prove she was stronger then the Zenjirou of now, not then.

He smiled as he saw a man walking into an alley, perfect, that was his quarry for the night. He followed the man into the alley, drawing his blade Sangue Lupo, the black sword with a red edge, a wolf's head was designed into the metal of the pommel, it's mouth open, fangs sharpened, he chuckled in glee, it was time to play. He whistled to attract the man's attention, he held his blade out, hoping the fool had heard of his deadly spree in Cascadia, it was time to use an old alias, "I am Cruel Cutter, mass murderer extraordinaire, now please, run little rabbit, run, make this a fun game." He smiled as he licked the edge of his blade. He loved that alias, Cruel Cutter, he had slaughtered twelve families and even destroyed the lives of a dozen guards and bystanders that wandered onto the seen before he could paint pictures with the blood of his victims, he chuckled, lets see if the man knew of him, more fear would make it more interesting.

Shan turned at the sound of the whistle, wondering who else was out this late. Behind him, blocking the exit to the main street, was an odd man with wild hair and a black sword drawn and pointed at the bard. Shan just stared, frozen in midstride.

"I am Cruel Cutter, mass murderer extraordinaire," the man said, smiling madly. "Now please, run little rabbit, run. Make this a fun game."

Shan raised a hand. "Hi...." he said in a warble.

Cruel Cutter? Why does that sound familiar alongside its obviously ominous tones?

Wait, his inner bard said, rifling through the filing racks of memory. There was a massacre we heard about last time we were in Cascadia. Quite a lot of dead bodies, and the killer was so cocky he even spent time painting on the walls with the blood, which there was a lot of apparently. Someone paid to get the walls cut down and plans to display them in a gallery. Conniham, I think. He's always been mad for alternative art. The murderer earned the moniker "Cruel Cutter" from his killing style and..well...attitude.

Sooo, running time,
his second thoughts said.

Are you nuts? The Cruel Cutter is right there! There's so much to ask! What brought him to Cascadia? What precipitated the killing spree, and what continued it? Conniham also had some drunken theories on some of his paintings. We could ask about that. That'll be good for a few rounds at the Broken Strings.

Shan's legs began to move without full cooperation from Shan's conscious mind, his survival instincts deciding his bardic nature wasn't planning to shut up for a time. He began orienting himself to figure out how to get to the main streets again, and to something resembling safety. His tentative mapmaking was overwritten.

We are running away, his Paranoia said, letting Shan's adrenal glands overload his system. "Running to" is not important. "Running to" will slow us down and get us killed. Focus on "away."

Shan got to the end of the alley and turned, slipping a bit on the slick snow. Running away did have a nice ring to it.

He's playing a game, his second thoughts noted as he picked up speed. That's probably the only reason we're still breathing. Paranoia, keep it up. We've got a long five minutes ahead of us.

Zenjirou smiled, he knew the city like the back of his red hand, flawless and blood red, perfection. He smirked as he back out of the alley, opening his left eye, the black orb had a single white rune in it where his pupil should be, he could see out of it just fine, but it freaked to many people out, now it was time to see how fast he truly was. The rune gave off a faint glow as the magic activated, he turned to the side, using his speed to run up part of the wall, leaping off of it and grabbing onto a rooftop, he scrambled up it and looked downward, he saw his prey running away, he sheathed his blade as he ran along the rooftops, easily keeping pace, he saw a four way intersection of alleys, if he kept on heading straight he would hit another main road, that was bad.

He used his new speed to easily surpass him, becoming a black blur in the night sky, landing behind the corner of a house, he waited for a while, until he could hear the man's foot falls. He smirked as he turned the corner dashing at the man, "Oh come on now little rabbit, if you set foot on a main street I will carve you up like a harvest turkey." He showed his spiked gauntlets as he ran, making sure not to run to fast, he didn't want to scare him to badly, a scared rabbit can die from it's heart beating to fast, he laughed a bit as he kept up the pace, waiting for his prey to turn a corner, this was going to be fun.

"Mwaaaa..." Shan said as he and friction held different ideas on how fast his forward momentum would cease. He ended up falling on his hands as he wheeled feet to gain traction. How had he moved so fast?

"Oh come on now little rabbit. If you set foot on a main street I will carve you up like a harvest turkey," the Cutter said, showing off his rather sharp gauntlets to emphasize his point. Hehe, get it? Point.

Shan seemed to be getting a bit punchy from the adrenaline. His paranoia refused to let up, however.

Alright, his second thoughts said as Shan concentrated on more running away. We've learned a rule of the game, at least. Stay away from main roads. From his reputation, I doubt any help will last long, unless it's something on the level of Nix.

Nix is an ancient black dragon...

That's my point, Logic.

She lives in the Dragonspine-

I KNOW, Logic. Be silent. Shadow, please offer advise and not just say that-

We should learn how to stab things. I hold by that, Shan's darker, usually repressed side said in a fortified tone. Fine, want me to think like the Cutter? He's bored. He's going to kill us. He probably knows this city quite well and is using the roofs. That helps explain his speed. Like you said, Second thoughts, he's only not stabbing us now because Shan running in fear is funny.

And that helps how?

Helps? Oh...how to live, you mean? Stay funny, throw in twists, make it fun, but not too hard.

Shan's second thoughts glared. And how do we do that?

Getting rid of our stuff, to begin with. It's not going to help and it's slowing us down.

Shan kept running, keeping his eyes down at ground level until he spotted a low window leading into a basement. It was much too small for a human to enter, so he felt the Cutter wouldn't mind much if he slipped and accidentally kicked through the window like this and scampered back up to run again. If he lived long enough and managed not to run into the main streets in panic, he should be able to make use of it.

If he lived...

Zenjirou smiled as Shan seemed to scramble away, now he knew why, it was far to much fun, he might become addicted to this game. He watched as he fell, kicking open a window as he scrambled, it only made him snicker, he turned a corner as Shan passed in his mad scramble, he drew a blade, hoping to scare him a bit more, Sangue Lupo was a bit thirsty, as he turned onto a side street, a guard got in his way, unfortunate, he was a possible witness, he ignored the past warnings from Lumi, using his superior speed to rush past him, slashing at his throat, taking off his head in a fluid stroke. He stopped and turned, letting the the head bounce to him, he picked it up and rushed again, trying to catch up from the lost ground.

He grimaced as he found a low roofed house, using a stone wall as a stepping stone to reach the top, he peered from above it and saw a figure rush by, good, he had caught up, he smirked as he sprinted with his magic speed, waiting for the perfect moment, he dropped down in front of him, holding a bloody katana and dropping the guard's head on Shan's feet, "Come on little rabbit, be more creative... you just got a guard killed." He laughed as he waited for Shan to run away.

"Come on little rabbit, be more creative... you just got a guard killed."

Cutter was before Shan again, this time holding a dripping sword that splattered the ground with drops of blood. This time, he was ahead with a head, which he tossed on the ground. Hehehe, puns.

Shan skidded to another stop, tripping and falling over the severed head. The dead man's expression looked surprised, so at least the Cutter had been quick. Shan thought this as he managed to get to his feet again, somewhat thankful to have a reason to turn and run before he lost track of the window. The Cutter laughed behind him, but Shan didn't turn around to look. That would only ruin his wind resistance, slow him down.

A few turned corners later, risking his speed to move his pack and violin case off his back to his hands, he reached the window. Praying Cutter wasn't watching, he dropped and slid to the window, shoving his things inside and focusing on the internal switch his cap installed in his morphic field, changed.

Turning into a raccoon was actually rather quick, and the magic of the cap shifted his clothing as well so there was no mess of struggling out of a shirt and turning back naked. So following the bundled pile that represented his worldly possessions, a auburn colored raccoon dodged around broken glass, switching back to a skinny bard who tucked the bag and case into a corner and caught his breath. He could get his violin at any point, and there was nothing in the bag that would be helpful, except...

Shan tucked one thing into a coat pocket. He'd hold off using it until dawn or until it seemed that would be a far better option than getting eviscerated, but at least he had a Plan B, Besides, he wasn't certain it would really work against the Cutter, so it'd be best to leave it as a last resort.

Shan leaned against a wall, taking in deep breaths and looking around. Stairs leading up, the broken window, another window on the side. Shan found a board and broke it open for another quick exit. He ducked behind some storage chests, shifting to raccoon to hide. He'd begin running again, but only when he felt his lungs could handle it.

Zenjirou ceased his laughter when Shan turned a corner, giving chase, making sure he was only a street behind him, his magical speed made it easy enough. He followed him for a while, the rabbit wasn't being entertaining enough, maybe he should make a new rule to the game... give it some more spice, he smirked when he saw the prey toss his things into a hole, and then transform into a raccoon of all things and crawl inside himself, a new rule was in the making. Zenjirou walked through the alley slowly, calling out for him, just loud enough for him to hear since he was so close to the window, his voice barely louder then normal, "Come on out little rabbit... don't make me search the houses, it takes so long for me to paint houses red, especially when there are more children then adults, the lack of blood makes it so very, very hard." He smirked as he used his speed, rushing away to a low building, leaping up and grabbing onto the edge of it, shimmying it up, using it as a stepping stone to get up to higher houses, laying down on his stomach, waiting for his prey to come out.

He would give the raccoon five minutes before ransacking and murdering everyone in the building, dropping their heads at his feet would be a good impact, innocent faces twisted in fear and rage, perfection. He chuckled to himself as he waited, planning out which routs to cut his prey off at, he had to try and get him to the bay... or perhaps a slaughter house, butcher him there and mix it in with the pig and cow meat, hmmm he wouldn't be able to buy meat from anywhere in a while though people would be eating human meat for a while, think of the hits that might pop up because people found out their expensive dinner was human rump roast. The ideas swirled around in his head, so many possibilities, so little time.

Shan heard the Cutter calling as his breathing slowed. He shivered, and he was too hot from exertion for it to be from the cold. He realized that he was in a house, and the Cutter certainly had no issues hunting through other people to get to him. First that guard, and now this...

This wasn't a game anymore.

Shan shed the coat and left it with his other things, transferring the other hat to his pants pocket. He didn't need it to warm himself right now, and it'd only be a bulky encumbrance. He shifted to human to pull himself up through the other window, shifting to raccoon then human again to run. He left his things behind, and now they didn't jostle on his back. He hated the idea of using his violin on a cold night like this, but he could always fix it later.

The bard dodged around corners, running like the scared little rabbit that he was, waiting for the Cutter's next move.

Zenjirou smirked when Shan had crawled out a few minutes later, he leaped from roof to roof following him, making sure to keep out of sight, the rabbit was taking random turns it seemed, he frowned when he saw him running towards the main road, it was time for another cut off. Zenjirou sped up, sliding off the roof and into the alley, blocking off a path, he smiled as his prey, maybe it was time to start the killing. He clanked his fists together and charged Shan, using only his normal speed, he didn't want him to think it's hopeless, he just needs to keep him scared.

Zenji laughed as he chased after Shan, making sure he's only just out of fist reach, "Come on little rabbit! Run run run! If you can't spice this up soon I might start the punishment, so show me something good." He slowed down to let his prey gain some distance, letting him turn a corner before climbing onto another rooftop, he began chasing again, laughing loud, he could feel his demonic power surge, maybe the demon was giving him more power, maybe he was high on the chase, either way, he felt good.

Cruel Cutter appeared again, blocking Shan off. This time however, instead of just menacing, he gave chase, forcing Shan to turn again and run. He was well conditioned for this, but the constant sharp twists and turns were taking a toll on his legs, and his ever shifting momentum was tiring him out. Even worse, the Cutter was just behind him. Shan could hear the man's footsteps echoing his, keeping pace with Shan's own steps.

Shan hated hurting others. If he had his way, he'd gladly run from every confrontation presented to him. He was a bard, a weaver of songs and tales. Bards aren't fighters. Shan was quite certain on this.

"Come on little rabbit! Run run run! If you can't spice this up soon I might start the punishment, so show me something good."

However, statements such as that and the Cutter's promise to bring more people into the game, not just that poor guard but innocent families and bystanders, gave Shan a sense of permission to strike back, if only in defense. He risked a glance behind. Cutter was a bit shorter than Shan, and leaned forward slightly to run, which was idiotic, really, if you were planning any sort of endurance running. Humans were made to run upright to best use all that lung capacity. Granted, that was Shan assuming the red, black and yellow haired maniac behind him was human, but his looks and derangement suggested he was. The Cutter's eyes were wide with anticipation, red and deranged. A horrendous thought struck Shan at that moment. He dared not examine it too closely, in fear it would vanish like dew in the sunlight, however....

Shan clenched a fist, risking precious oxygen by whispering an incantation. Something within his hand began to glow. He had one shot. He prayed he was accurate.

He twirled around, bringing the hand up. He threw the handful of Stardust straight at the Cutter's eyes, shouting for good measure. Tiny particles of lights flew out, shimmering towards the murderer's face, hopefully sticking to his eyes or at least blinding him somewhat.

Shan didn't bother to see if it worked. He turned around again and ran, hoping his tactic bought him some time and distance.

Zenjirou raised an eyebrow as his prey turned, though what shocled him was that he threw something... directly into his eyes. He stopped in his tracks, trying his best to stop the dust from getting into his eyes, he growled in rage, the little rabbit blinded him. It took him a few minutes to get the dust out of his eyes, he wanted to howl in rage, but that would wake someone up, he had already killed one man, there had been no witnesses, Lumi probably wouldn't figure it out, if she did... he would fight her, and this time, he wouldn't be beaten down so severely this time around.

He started to grind his teeth as he climbed the closest house, getting onto the roof as quick as possible, he started running, using his magically enhanced speed to enhance his long jumping skill, leaping from house to house, crossing alleys and roof tops quickly, he had little time to catch up to the prey. Zenjirou was not happy, it was almost like his rage would manifest as something else, he could feel a dull pain in his forehead, he shook his head, ignoring it, he just needed to find his prey and then kill him.

Well, now you did it. You struck back, and now he's just going to kill you.

Yes, but now we can escape. We only needed a bit of time to slip out of sight and stay that way,
Shan's second thoughts replied to his Shadow.

Yessss... his Shadow said. Except if I were the Cutter and I couldn't find the person I wanted to cut, I'd just cut somebody else. Lots of somebody elses, really.

Shan wished he had the breath to sigh. We had to keep this game going, it seemed. But how?

Shan found himself in a small courtyard surrounded on four sides by windowless walls. It looked like a rather forgotten place, almost completely cut off from the rest o they city except for some thin alleyways, one so thin he could only fit through it a a raccoon. It would be difficult for anyone to come in here by accident, and all the sounds within were funneled upward by the blank stone walls. Lying at the center of the courtyard was a stonewalled well. Shan wandered over to look down it.

Wait, how does a well work here? his curiosity asked, intrigued by the new mystery. Isn't this an iceburg? What water was down there, melt water? Were people drinking the surface that held them afloat?

Shan wasn't able to indulge his curiosity at the moment, but he note that, in the darkness, it was impossible to make out the bottom of the well as anything more than a black pit. It gave Shan an idea.

Shan rushed back to a darkened alcove, shadowed by overhanging eaves. Leaning against the wall, he allowed his body to relax, fading until there were only shadows and ancient crates. Unseen by the naked eye, Shan focused as he brought his arms to bear, the memory of his violin solidifying into reality. Keeping his eyes fixed on the square, Shan activated his Sounding enchantment. From the square, seeming to wander around in circle, came a voice calling out loudly.

"You! What are you doing up on the roofs?" came the voice that bristled with authority and indignation, Shan's impression of a guard. "Don't think I don't see you! Does your mother know you're out so late? Get down here now, Boy!"

The guard's voice continued to call out, circling the courtyard, hopefully summoning the attentions of the Cutter. He was using the roofs, Shan knew, and he'd already killed one guard. Perhaps he'd be willing to go after another. Shan kept playing, watching invisibly from the darkness. The Cutter wanted to hunt? That was fine. Except the Cutter didn't really know how to hunt, it seemed, just play. One didn't chase prey; one waited for it to come to them.

Shan planned to continue this on his own terms.

Zenjirou grimaced as he leaped from roof to roof, he was moving fast enough that he was just a black blur in the night sky, he heard something crying out, he grimaced as he went towards it. He heard someone calling clearly in a few seconds, a voice was calling out for him to get down... how can he see him when he was as black as night, a blur, and the fact that most guards don't like watching the rooftops, makes their lives easier that way. He climbed down a few streets away, making his way there, only a black blur rushing through the alleys, when he arrived at the place the voice was coming from, he noticed it was playing over and over again, a magical trick had been played on him.

He growled, his face livid from falling for the stupid trick, he punched a wall as he spoke, "Dang it! That stupid prey pulled quite the trick, I'm pissed... so very very pissed... next time I see him I'm going to mutilate him. Cut him into pieces... yes... cut him. Cut cut cut cut cut cut cut cut cut!" He seemed to be working himself into a rage, drawing a blade and swinging it, as if he was hacking apart the real prey, taking off toes, fingers, ears, and just shaving the flesh from his bones. He could feel a burning pain in his head, two black twisting horns extended from his head, he kept on repeating his new mantra, "Cut cut cut cut cut cut cut cut!" The lights around him started to dim, a lot of the light seemed to even ignore where he was, making it even darker around him. He kept on repeating his mantra, getting into the right mind as he worked himself up into a murdering fury.
