Everto grumbled as he climbed up the mountain, he had taken a path most of the way up but now it was just using his hands, feet, and scrambling motions that have almost killed him three times already. He sighed as he finally made it to a small animal path, probably meant for mountain goats or dragons without wings, either way, it was flat, well traveled, and was going in the direction he was heading. He started down the path, humming as he thought of all the wonderful things he would do once he found the secret outpost they had up here... an outpost that he had heard of by sheer accident by a few drunk paladins in a tavern, it was perfect, now all he needed to do was kill the paladins, interrogate any mages they had, and then destroy the artifact that he had come for.

He peered ahead and saw two paladins coming down the pathway, looks like he was on the right track, he started casting his magic, not needing to speak but instead he put up a finger and started to write words in an old demon tongue. Once they noticed him one yelled forth for him to stay there, and then that person was immediately set on fire from Everto's finished spell, he smirked as the men panicked, the man on fire throwing himself to the ground and trying to roll, but it was far to late, he rolled and knocked over his friend, sending him over the cliff as he burned to death, the magical flames only being slightly hindered by the rolling. He walked over to the corpse, dragging it to the edge and then simply kicking it until it fell off, he looked down as it hit rock after rock along the way, he felt good, two evil paladins down, a few hundred to go. He kept on walking down the path, looking for more signs of paladins... or maybe one of those things they had created in his image, he shuttered, he needed to find where they were making them now and stop them.. but for now the artifact comes first.

Eliel walked the paths of the Dragonspine, hands deep in his pockets, sword strapped between his shoulder blades. He felt the sweat building where the sheath pressed his tunic to his flesh, the sun seeming unbearable to the gray-skinned man. A breeze began to wash over the path he traveled, dust stirring underfoot, the light foliage shifting as the winds approached. The brief chill he felt was welcome, a sweet reprieve from the hot sunlight. He was creature of shadows and the cold, and even as Harvest approached, the mountains kept clear skies in the last couple of days, refusing to give ground to the seasonal change until the last moment.

Eliel paused, opening his arms wide. His usual black tunic had been shed in favor of a white one in hopes the sun's rays would hold less effect. As he paused, he felt a pang in his belly, hunger scratching at his gut. Wincing, he looked around, inspecting the path for any signs of animal passing. All he could scour from the area were tracks days old, if not weeks. He found this curious in particular, it meant animals were tending to avoid the area recently.

Something had disturbed the wildlife.

Reaching for the bow slung over his breast by its string, he pulled a couple of times before reaching for an arrow from his quiver. Nocking it, he whispered, feeling magic tickle his fingers as the tools stirred. His arrows glowed and the string buzzed at his fingertips.

Walking forward at a normal pace, he dodged aside just in time to avoid a falling corpse, still warm but long dead. He hit the ground hard with a sickening crack and rolled into a bush. Drawing the arrow back, he aimed it up the short cliffside. He spotted a blackened corpse being knocked over the edge. Cursing, he eased the tension in the bow and gripped the arrowhead to the bowshaft by the head, using his newly freed hand to help himself scale the sloped cliffside at an angle to meet up with whatever was causing this.

* * * *

Upon reaching the top, Eliel searched for something to hold on to, gripping a root and kicking to haul himself over the edge. Coming up on his belly, he pushed himself to his knees and rose, drawing the arrow back as he spotted a figure walking away from his position.

Boy, stop and explain yourself, I've no qualms shooting a child in the back.[color]”

Everto stopped, his little body shaking with anger, he turned with a scowl on his face, "Boy!? I'm over a hundred and fifty eights years old!" He saw the odd grey skinned man and pointed at him, "Put that bow down! I only killed two paladins. They deserved it, killing half breeds, demons, and threatening to kill my family, these paladins of the Black Blade need to be wiped out, and I won't let anyone stop me!" He wanted to pull up his inner reserves and lob a fireball at the man, but he didn't know who he was, he had called him boy instead of hellspawn or demon child. Everto sighed and took a few quick breaths, trying to calm himself down before speaking again, "Sorry about that, I've got a bit of an anger issue since I look like a ten year old when I'm easily older then most people I encounter. My name is Everto, I'm a half-demon trying to kill off the Order of the Black Blade, they're a bunch of racist murderers who want to exterminate all half-breeds, all demons, and pin it all on me, a half-demon. Now that I've told you everything, why not introduce yourself sir."

Everto kept calm, examining the area and trying to think of a good way to kill him if he planned on fighting, he could set him on fire... but he might have magic protecting him, his best shot was to charge in, hope the arrow misses, and punch the man in the groin while at the same time casting a magic missile spell or a fireball spell. He looked at the man and put his hands in his pockets, his hands curling around the metal knuckles he had hidden in there. If the man fired that bow, he would make him pay with the inability to have children ever again. He braced himself, ready to move at any given moment.

Eliel arched a white eyebrow at the boy's proclamation of being over a century and a half old. His commanding tone almost had Eliel lowering his bow. It lowered an inch before coming back to as he drew a bead on the demon's heart. He tightened the pull on the string, ready to fire as he drew quick breaths.

The new, apologetic tone relaxed him enough to let off the bow, removing the arrow from the string and returning it to its quiver. He pulled the bow over his head and rested it on his shoulder, keeping a hand at his breast, ready to draw his blade.
Perhaps they are not entirely wrong in their pursuit against demons. There are, after all, many running about, causing all manner of mayhem. So many are so unrefined, disgusting, disrupting balances where they are fragile enough.

Eliel shot Everto an amused look.

We are a messy race.

Eliel opened his arms, offering peace. “You will find no fight from me, brother. Nicodemus alt Luriel. My blood runs on both sides of Shavarath's fields. Titled Blackguard, though I don't suppose the title means much here.

Would you object if I were to request accompanying you?

Everto smiled widely as he listened to him, the man had the blood of celestials and demons in him from the sound of it, that was indeed most interesting. When he offered his help Everto wanted to accept immediately... but that may not be the best thing to do, the man was obviously not with the paladins... but that in no way meant he was really on his own side. He turned to think when he saw four more guards marching down the road, shields up and swords out, they were probably looking for the missing patrol that Everto burned and tossed off a mountain. Everto brought his hands out of his pockets, his fists clenching around a set of metal knuckles. He clanked them together a few times, feeling the reverberations of the metal through his hand, he needed to be ready.

He turned back to Eliel, "I'll accept your help, but now we've got a few paladins coming down here, probably looking for their patrol... they must have an item that lets them give telepathic messages... or they saw the bright flash of fire in the distance and decided to check it out, either way, we've got company." He looked at them and started to cast his spell, feeling the magic rushing through his body as his finger moved quickly, scribbling out the arcane formula in the air. Now the enemy was charging, no more then fifteen feet from them, Everto smiled, holding his spell until they got a bit closer. As soon as they were within melee range and hopped forward, dashing inside of the first man's swinging, bringing his metal fist into the man's groin, while at the same time firing the magic missile, causing a rather large dent to appear, a whoosh of air, and the scream of what would have been an eight year old girl escaped the mouth of the man before Everto could back step away, getting back into a plain front stance with his fists up, he was ready to fight.

Eliel watched the boy turn the grown man into a curled up mass on the ground, clenching his unmentionables and grunting in pain. Cocking his head, the graye drew his sword and drove the tip into his back, slipping it into a free space between ribs and piercing the heart. The man uncurled, arching his back and crying out silently, only succeeding in shifting the blade inside his own body.

Eliel gripped the hilt and twisted as far as the bone would allow, tearing a hole in the man's organ. Withdrawing its polished silver blade from his corpse, he lifted away a portion of tunic, slicing it free. Using it as a medium, he pinched the blade and drew it clean.

The simpler answer is often the most likely.

Eliel sheathed his sword and opened his hands to the rushing paladin that had deemed him the greater threat, charging with warhammer held high. The man gave an overhanded chop, metal head driving for Eliel's skull. His hand shot up, catching the shaft with two fingers and guiding it around himself. Pulling the man in close, he drove the tip of his right hand into the man's diaphragm, curling his fist and striking him. The paladin coughed hard as the breath rushed from his lungs, finding himself unable to move. Smiling, Eliel took the warhammer, twisted it in his hand, and removed it from the man's grasp easily. Turning the spiked end up, he pushed the man back and swung up, spiking him in the eye.

Taking the weapon back, he spun it again and spiked the man's foot to the ground as he fell backward.

Smiling, the graye Looked to Everto. “These men don't seem to be the most well-trained, given their choice of work.

Everto watched the short display and shrugged, "They might not even be full fledged paladins, notice the lack of any kind of magic or power? They're probably just trainees, not any real thre-." He was caught off as a black twisting bolt of energy and a single word, 'Enervation' was called out by paladin in the back. Everto ducked to the ground as it passed over him, he stood back up and looked at his next chosen foe, he continued on as his brain started to do the mental calculations for the spell, his finger writing them out in the air, "Okay, we have one paladin who can use a very powerful spell, but from the look on his face I don't think he expected me to dodge it, or to retaliate with this." A fireball streaked from his hand, slamming into the man's gut and setting his clothes on fire, he screamed and lost his concentration.

Everto smirked as he turned to the next man who had decided to run at him once the shock of his comrades dying had faded away, his sword slashing straight down at Everto, he seemed to have wanted to either push Everto off the cliff, split his head open, or he wanted to take a flying leap off the cliff. Everto toward him and ducked to the side, kicking at the man's legs, sending him tumbling onto the ground and quite quickly over the ledge. Everto stood up and looked to Eliel, "Lets keep on moving, we've got a bit more ground to cover and then a lot of paladins to kill and items to destroy." Everto was ready to walk on, he heard the pained groans of the man he burned, he shrugged, the man had burns all over his body and wouldn't be able to move for a while, he would either die by his hand or by the beasts wandering the trail. Everto picked up one of the fallen shortsword, slitting the man's throat, he tossed the shortsword aside, ready to continue walking.

Eliel watched as the bolt struck a half-dead tree. As it hit, the vibrancy faded rapidly, a sizable chunk of wood twisted and splintered where the magic had struck. Cocking an eyebrow, he ignored Everto's words and observed the race to finish their spells. The paladin's spell was larger in scale, and took longer. Unfortunate him. The fireball struck hard igniting the man and interrupting his casting. The magic he was juggling fizzled and coursed through his arm quickly, reducing the limb to a shriveled image of its former self.

The celestial made a note of Everto's magical preferences. Fire seemed to suit him well, judging by his temper and tendency to retaliate to situations with extreme force. If unchecked, it was likely the small man would cause great amounts of unnecessary destruction.
He would avoid taking too great a hand in the magical battles the half-demon waged, leaving him to his blade, axe, and bow. Better to let the man-boy think he was untalented, and not alert the 'paladins'.

Besides, it was day, making anything he tried harder.

Eliel nodded and followed after the demon. He paused as the man casually slit the throat of the burned man. “Of course, no time to waste.” As the demon headed forward, Eliel knelt down and clamped a hand to the wound, keeping him from immediately bleeding out. “Do you wish to serve your cause even in death? I can assure your life be put to the restoration of balance in this world. If so, blink for me.” He whispered, breeze keeping his words from reaching the demon.

The dying man's eyes fluttered, closing tight. Eliel waited several seconds and almost gave up, until the man opened his eyes once more. Smiling, he pulled aside his cloak, revealing a slender red rod. Letting go of his throat, he let the flow of blood flow. Quickly the life left the man's eyes. As he died, Eliel felt the wand hidden beneath his cloak thrum. Closing it, he wiped his hand off and closed the paladin's eyes, covering his actions.

Standing, he took long strides to catch up to the shorter man. “Tell me more of these paladins.

Everto walked for a bit, keeping his eyes on the path until his new ally asked him to tell him more about the paladin scum, that was fine, the more people new of their true face the better, "The paladins of the Order of the Black Blade were created by a group of racist bigot paladins that wanted to kill demons and half-breeds alike, they also have a tendency to brutally torture half demons. Though in my case for when I was in the Istan Desert they simply ripped away my mana daily using an old ritual which forced it out of my body, it felt like someone was skinning me alive. They also have a very odd relationship with the orcs, while they sometimes hunt them down they are also just as likely to ask their shamans for help, I found out they commissioned at least four sets of armor with special runes crafted into them. As far as I know a single captain or leader gets a single piece of the armor, using it to augment their spell casting and fighting ability. They also employ necromancers to make flesh golems. Somehow they also figured out a way to copy a person's magic signature... it's basically just the aura of your magic and being, your attitude, lifestyle, everything you do effects it making no two the same. They found out they could rip mine away and put it onto a featureless flesh golem and are now also creating an army of Everto lookalike golems that they plan on using as a scapegoat for the destruction of Cascadia, after all, what can stop one thousand mages all summoning golems and shooting fireballs... not many things I'll tell you. So I'm going to kill them all and destroy the artifacts they created along with their Everto lookalike army."

He knew he had a tendency to rant a bit but he felt it was justified this time, these guys had tortured him, threatened his family, and taken what made him unique and put him into mass production. He just wanted to torch the entire mountain side just in case any paladins survived. Well maybe this man would help him until the end of this little venture. Oh well, only time would tell, then he felt it, something familiar to himself, a volley of fireballs soaring from above... towards them. His eyes widened as he saw six of himself standing above him, all shouting out at once, 'Die for the glory of the Black Blade!' Everto growled as he ran, taking cover behind a rather large rock on the mountain path, fireballs hitting the ground around him and the rock itself was starting to grow hotter, he started with his own magic, he needed to get a spell off soon, but how did these guys find him... that would have to wait though, for now he had some lookalikes to kill.

Eliel listened in silence, pondering the implications of the situation. These paladins seemed intent on evening the balances, whether or not they understood what they were doing. In a very basic way, their goals worked with his own.
But he could not accept their means.

Eliel opened his mouth to speak before he was interrupted by the barrage of fireballs. Ducking down, he dove after Everto, taking shelter behind the rock. It shook as fireball after fireball struck the opposite side, rocking him to the core with his back to it. Leaning away, he put his hand down, and nearly slipped it into a hole in the base. Glancing down, he noted the small opening, just big enough for a rat, though it looked to open up inside.

Well, I'll be damned.

Reaching in, he gripped a fist around the blackest shadows deep within the hole, where light could not reach. He felt a slithering around his flesh, sending a shudder up his spine. Looking at the mage, he jerked his head. “Mind not casting anything that'll bring up much light for a moment?

Focusing, he touched two fingers of his left hand to his chest, where the circular layered rings of tattooed runes sat on his flesh. They darkened, inky blackness spreading across his skin. Withdrawing his hand from the hole, he revealed the flame-like shadows clinging to his fist, sliding over his skin like a living creature. Clenching his hand, he willed it to grow, enveloping him. The blackness shot up his arm like a bolt, covering the graye entirely, leaving him long-limbed and featureless except for the glowing eye shapes. Standing, the Blackguard walked around the rock, layered voice casting a spell as he wove his hands together. Darkness pooled at his feet, spreading where he stepped and dissipating behind.

A fireball launched his direction, transformation leaving him all-too irresistible a target. The darkness at his feet rose to meet it, creating a shadow-like shell in front of him. The flames burst against it, rolling over the shield and blowing a hole in its front. Shadows filled in the gap as he moved through the shade of a dying tree cocking his right hand back, he whipped his arm to the side, a whip made of shadows unfurling itself from his hand. Reaching back, the whip arched sharply. Swinging forward, the whip hissed instead of cracking, wrapping around the arm of one of the golems. Eliel hissed himself as he jerked the whip to himself, pulling the golem close. Clawing his free hand, he drove one of the long, sharp fingers into its skull.

Everto nodded, he didn't know why he didn't want light near him, but it didn't matter, all of his spells created light so he would just force it to be farther away. He felt the burning power of his magic well up inside him, the fireballs slamming into the boulder and ground stopped as he saw Eliel shift into some monstrous shadow thing, it was amazing, he would have to ask him how he did it... and then figure out how to make a fire variant. He watched as he easily killed on of the Everto Golems, though he had no doubt that now they were all focusing on him, he popped up, letting loose the spell he was preparing, one of the golems burst into flames, though he seemed to not care, raising his hand up to conjure another fireball, though instead he was knocked off balanced as a shadow like whip shot forth, taking one of the golems and bringing it to Eliel, who easily killed the golem with a razor sharp finger.

Everto didn't find the thought was needed, it was downright creepy to see himself die, though he would have to do so many more times before ending the paladins. Though now that he looked there were only four of him in the area total, one was on fire and probably beyond help, another had his head skewered, and the other two were working on some big spell... the only spell that he knew of that took the time they were casting was summoning a glass elemental, he cursed himself for knowing such a spell, killing two glass golems would take a long time since he couldn't hurt it other then fire magic. He prepared the same spell again, prepared to burn another one to a crisp, he needed to stop at least one of them before the glass golems were summoned. He let his spell loose, setting one of them on fire, he only hoped it was enough to stop at least one of the glass golems.

Eliel released the whip, immediately dissipating into nonexistence. Pulling his finger from the false Everto's eye socket, he kicked behind its knees and threw it to the ground, slamming the back of its skull into the rocky dirt. Inhaling deeply, the Blackguard began a new casting upon the appearance of the glass golems, tone sounding humble and almost reverent. Opening his arms wide, he clapped his hands together. Arms straining, he pulled his hands away, shadows being sucked into the imaginary void between them, collecting what he needed.

The shadows collected and compacted into a solid-looking ball that rapidly began to gain weight. The ball shaped into a humanoid figure much similar to Eliel's, the size of a small monkey. The shadow-creature grew as it moved on its own, limbs lengthening. It gained height as it approached one of the glass golems.

The golem's featureless face sucked in, creating a cavity where the mouth would be, a sucking roar emanating from its depths. One of the golems took a swing at the nightwalker. Its fist dislodged a chunk of shadow-flesh, which flapped back and sunk into the rest of his torso, damage filling itself in. Reaching forward, it wrapped its hands around the golem and leaned backward, wrestling it to the cliffside.

Eliel crouched and sprinted toward the glass golem his lords-granted nightwalker was wrestling with, lowering his arms and pushing from behind, sending the two giants sprawling off-balance and over the edge.
Stepping away from the edge, Eliel faced the battlefield and dove near Everto, shadows peeling away from him as he moved, finally giving in to the strong sunlight. The shadows melted to nothing, leaving him once more gray-skinned and white-haired.

Damned strain, doing that in the sun.

Everto looked as Eliel started summoning some kind of... golem, it was made of shadows and darkness, which oddly enough couldn't easily be cut by the glass golem's sword-like arms, but what worried him even more was that the last Everto golem had run away, probably told to retreat if they lost more then half their number... more paladins would be waiting for them. He looked on as Eliel sent his golem and the glass golem over the edge and off the cliffside. He smirked when Eliel seemed to flop to the ground next to him, "Come on, we've got more walking to do, if we're lucky we might be able to find that golem that ran away while you were dealing with his glass golem. Either way they'll know we're coming, but if we can catch him before he tells them anything we can make it seem like an overwhelming force. Their fear of a stronger force will spread through the recruits and shake the paladins... or they can learn only two men are attacking and be afraid that way... oh well, it works to our advantage either way." He shrugged and started to walk on, looking as the path twisted to the side, away from the cliff.

Everto followed it and made sure to keep a brisk pace, he didn't want to keep the paladins waiting. He walked for nearly an hour in silence, constantly looking around to make sure no one was waiting for them, he felt it was odd... so few people were guarding this place, he had expected a small army or at least forty soldiers to be guarding the area, but there was nothing. Though he soon realized why, farther down the path was an orc corpse, as he got closer to it he smirked, so that was why there were so few guards, the orcs were fighting them on a separate front. He turned to Eliel, "Looks like the orcs found them before we did, probably fighting them somewhere else, this one's probably just a scout. We should keep on moving, the path will slope downwards according to the information I found, there we will see where the paladins are keeping everything." Everto turned back to the path and went on, following the slowly descending pathway into a deep valley.

The valley was rather... green, instead of the normal browns and grays of the mountain, the soil was dark and rich, the plants growing all over the place made it seem like a small haven in the harsh mountains. Everto scratched his head, it was odd, he had heard that one of the fire artifacts was here, but this was clearly the work of an earth or water artifact, maybe both. His thoughts kept on coming, trying to think of all the possibilities before coming to a conclusion or guessing one at the very least. He looked around the valley once more, trying to see anything that could give him some kind of clue, the only thing he had missed before were the rather large holes in the sides of the valley, ones that seemed to high for most humans to climb. Oh well, maybe Eliel found something he didn't, he turned to his ally, "You see anything I don't? All I can tell is that there might be two artifacts here, the place is abnormally well off for being smack dab in the middle of the mountains, and there are giant holes in the side of the valley far to high up for most people to climb." He wished he could see more, maybe he should have called in some help... but he had lost his only pet weeks ago and couldn't find hide nor scale of it. He sighed, this was going to get fairly annoying if they had to climb up to those holes.

The two creatures wrestled in midair to no effect, the Nightwalker's attacks left no more than a scratch on the glass golem, and the golem's blows simply scattered shadows, which reformed little than a second later. Glass shards broke off in the nightwalker, the slivers slipping out of its body, pushed free. The nightwalker wrapped an arm around its body and crawled atop its back, letting the heavier creature remain beneath. The ground rushed upward, a pointed rock driving into the center of the glass golem's mass. An incredibly loud boom echoed through the valley as the impact shattered the golem's body. Shards flew in all directions, punching holes in the Nightwalker. The impact struck the shadow creature hard, scattering the shadows. Rolling glass pieces sounded, no other movement visible in the spot until the shadows began pulling together.

The creature reformed, somewhat smaller than it was before the encounter. Sunlight burned at its shadowy flesh. Hissing, the humanoid gripped the side of the cliff wall, digging claws into the rock as it began its ascent to its master.

Eliel sighed, propped up on his elbows. Flicking ivory hair from his eyes, he pushed himself up, getting to his feet. Dusting himself off, he followed Everto, walking by the demon's side. He nudged the orc's corpse with the toe of his boot, frowning to himself. “At least they're occupied with something other than us. With a bigger foe to worry about, it's unlikely they can spare as many murderers as it would take to worry us.

The valley caught him by surprise, not expecting the foliage or general liveliness of the place. Frowning, he tilted his head to listen to the half-demon as he inspected the area. “Just a whole lot of suspicious.” Eliel looked to their rear as if expecting something.
This is fairly high ground. I'm assuming the paladins are somewhere here. Which means we should be able to spot anything moving below us. Which worries me slightly.” His brow furrowed. “Where's the golem?

As if on queue the golem appears, walking towards them, but the odd thing is it's clothes were slightly different, they were much darker, the red coat looking like blood, the pants were gray instead of white, the same with his hair, and on his hands were a wicked set of plate gauntlets, the fingers tipped to look more like claws, fire wreathing around the hands, he chuckled as it looked at them, "Welcome to our not-so-secret base, you probably got here from looking for the golem that ran away... sorry to say he had a nasty spill and ended up being burned alive by my flames. I am Everto Parvulus, I am one of the four Everto-golems that are leading the golems. I prefer being called Fire though, as my compatriots prefer being called Earth, Wind, and Water, there is no doubt in my mind you'll both die though, for you see, I planned ahead. I melted the area were the orcs were resting, burying them under molten rock, now it's your turn to die, fear my power! Arise!" From his gauntlets came to drops of blood, scribing magical circles into the ground, which brought forth two, much larger and bulkier then usual, glass golems.

Everto bit his thumb, bringing out his own magical power as a drop of his own blood fell to the ground, he spoke calmly as he stared at the cocky golem, "I am the real Everto Parvulus, and I am going to rip your head off! Glaiser! Rise!" His blood forming a much less intricate pattern, summoning forth a normal sized glass golem, which seemed to nod at the two larger ones, raising it's blades. Everto looked to Eliel, "Can you take the other glass golem? I've got a golem to rip to shreds." He punched his palms a few times with his metal knuckles, smirking all the while as he walked towards his golem, the two glass golems letting him pass, as if it was the plan all along. He struck a fighting pose, his left leg forward and his fists up at eye level, his left forward while his right was back, he was ready to fight.
