The Dragonspine Mountains were breathtaking, and not just because of the thin air at this altitude. The dark rocks shot into the sky like spikes from their namesake, forbidding and yet inviting in their mystery. Shan looked around, watching the clouds float not only overhead, but around and even below them. Occasionally, in the distance, he'd see the tiny figure of a flying dragon, their size hidden by the distance. There would sometimes be a spark of light as the dragon breathed flame. "Will you never get tired of gawking?" his guide asked, laughing. "How can I? This place is beautiful!" Shan said as another dragon flew past in the distance. "Haven't met many who say that sincerely," the great bear of a man said with a deep laugh. "Have they ever attacked you? The dragons, I mean." "Nah," his guide said, clucking his oxen to pull the wagon faster up another incline. "This pass is pretty well shielded by those rock outcropping, and it's not a good place to nest. I worry more about marauders and the like." A few minutes passed in silence. "Oh!" the guide said. "Thought of another one. How do you escape from a halfling?" "How?" "You stand on a chair!" The man laughed and release another belly laugh. "Short little buggers!" "Yeah, yeah," Shan said, going along with the man's rather twisted humor. "I think I remember one." "Shoot!" "How do you hide money from an orc?" Shan asked with a grin. "You hide it under the soap!" Shan laughed, then realized he was the only one. "Get it? Because orcs are filthy and...um...hate baths and..." Shan trailed off at the granite expression on the man's face. "Think that, do you?" he asked, his warm good-humor given away to ice. "Well, I thought we were sharing jokes like that, and you liked that one with the elf in the bar-" "My grandma was an orc." The man said without looking at Shan. "She was a saint of a woman, and very hygenic." "Um...I'm very sure she was. I mean, it was just a little joke. I mean, you laughed at all the other ones and told quite a few yourself. They don't hurt anyone, and you know they're funny because they're generally true and-" The man turned and glared at Shan. "You talk too much." Getting kicked by a gigantic quarter orc off a moving wagon, Shan discovered, hurt a lot. "Hey!" Shan shouted. "Hey, hey stop!" He ran after the wagon, which had gained some distance on the smooth stone road as Shan collected himself and ensured his violin was well. The man cracked a whip and speed his oxen into top speed. Shan ran as long as he could, but he was a sprinter, not a marathoner. "You can't leave me here!" He panted, and finally was forced to stop to grip his aching side and gulped air. The wagon turned a corner and vanished from sight. "Yeah, well, I HATED YOUR JOKES! THEY WERE ALL OFFENSIVE, HYPOCRITE!" He stood alone in the now foreboding and sinister Dragonspine Mountains, staring down the empty path. A cold wind shot through his clothes. "I really should have known this would happen," Shan said, and set out across the mountains on the only transport he had left. "Now, it was a few days ride to get through, so walking will take..." another burst of dragonfire lit the horizon. "...hopefully not a lifetime." Edited by Shan Orison, Fri Aug 26, 2011 9:59 pm.

Vyse road on Umbriel, her long loping gait covering more ground then any horse he knew of, he smiled as he saw the fire, he was taking advantage of his new free time and decided to take a hand at dragon spotting, he half hoped one of them would attack him, fighting a dragon would be entirely new experience... and dragon scales could help manufacture armor while the claws and fangs could be used in weapons. He saw something up the road... it was a man, someone who just peaked his curiosity. As he got closer he recognized the man and waved, shouting out, "Is that you Shan? Hold on a moment there my friend!" He urged Umbriel to charge forward, her practiced gait becoming a furious charge, closing the gap in seconds, she immediately slowed down, stopping only a few feet from Shan. Vyse dismounted and looked at Shan, "It is you, what are you doing in the Dragon Spine? This isn't a normal place for a bard to go to... or were you just heading through?" He realized it was a lot of questions, but if he got those answers he could probably help him out. Vyse looked around the sky, he could see a few dragons flying in the sky... that was odd, there was usually only one dragon in the sky that you could see... this could be a bad sign for them. |

The sound of fast footfalls behind him caused Shan to turn in puzzlement. The sight of a giant tiger bearing down on him should have sent him running, except the sudden appearance of a tiger chasing him caused his legs to uncharacteristically freeze up. "Is that you, Shan?" he heard from the tiger, and realized that it was actually serving as a mount for someone. "Hold on a moment, my friend!" the rider shouted again, and somehow the orange cat started moving faster. The novelty of being called "friend" when not in a dark alley held Shan still. The dire tiger stopped beside him, and a familiar, four armed man stepped off. "It is you, what are you doing in the Dragon Spine? This isn't a normal place for a bard to go to... or were you just heading through?" "By the gods, Vyse, I cannot express how happy I am to see you!" Shan said, genuinely ecstatic at the man's appearance. "I was just heading though and enjoying the sites along the way but um....I lost my ride. "I told a bad joke," Shan said in explanation. "The whole scenario's rather ridiculous. And I could ask the same of you, Vyse. What's a merchant doing up here? This hardly seems a place to hold a bustling center of commerce. Very few customers, on the whole. "Also, I could really use a ride out of here, um, if you and Umbriel wouldn't mind the extra weight. These mountains are a lot less charming when you can't get through them quickly." |

Vyse smiled, "Yeah, Umbriel here without her armor could easily carry two men in plate armor." He patted Umbriel's side, mounting her and extending a hand down, pulling Shan onto the back of Umbriel. Umbriel went off into a nice easy gait, keeping her speed faster then most carts. Vyse turned to look at Shan, "As for why I'm here, I have more free time now that I have another adviser to help out my friend Qadaj with all of the work, I'm not much of a merchant so I leave most of the work to those two, I'll do all of the face to face stuff with new partners and merchants wanting to talk business. So for now I'm just seeing the sights I haven't seen before, maybe even fight things I've never fought before. Remember Shan, I'm a powerful warrior even though I'm a merchant, fighting a dragon would be all kinds of fun." He turned back to watch the road a smirk on his face, fighting a dragon would be all kinds of fun, fighting was one of the joys he got from life. Fighting, riding, and spending time with Umbriel. He chuckled, "So Shan, haven't you found it odd that there have been so many dragons flying in the sky? Usually you'll see one in a day, but so far I can count at least five and lots of different kinds of elemental breath lighting up the sky... I have a hunch that it's mating time, dragons will be even more aggressive then normal. As long as we don't bring attention to ourselves, we should be fine though." Dragons didn't tend to fly all the way down to the road for a bite sized snack like Vyse, Shan, or Umbriel... but a younger dragon might, but it was unlikely they'd even come out of their lairs, they might incur the wrath of the much larger dragons... but you never know until it happens. |

"Have there been more dragons?" Shan asked as he kept himself as steady as possible on Umbriel. She was moving at a smooth pace, but Shan wasn't much of a rider. He was more than glad to not be guiding Umbriel along. "I've never been here before. I thought all those dragons were normal. You know, it being the Dragonspine Mountains." Shan watched the horizon again as another dragon flew. Was that burst of flame closer than usual? It failed to come closer to the pass, however, and Umbriel's progress went uninterrupted until evening began to darken the sky and highlight another flare. They'd pass the time in between by swapping tales of how they've been and the adventures they've encountered since they last met in Cascadia. They tried "I Spy" for awhile, but when all you have to work with are rocks, clouds, and dragons, it gets rather tiresome. They moved in silence as night's curtain fell when Shan noticed something ahead on the trail. "Hey, stop a moment," he said, pointing to the anomaly. "There's a split in the path there." Granted, he thought, it wasn't much of a split. It was thinner than the main pas, barely big enough for Umbriel to walk though, and it was even less worn then their untraveled path. It sloped down and around, making it's end impossible to discern. "My guide said this pass was one straight road through the mountains. Where does this way go?" Oh no, his common sense said. Oh, no no no. I know what's coming. It starts out innocently enough with you asking some people in a field what they're doing, and then it turns out they're building a contraption that's supposed to reach the moon, and you're volunteered as a test pilot because the rest of them are too bloody intelligent to try it themselves. You KNOW the main path is safe...ish, and you KNOW your luck. Why are you considering this? There could be cool things down there! his curiosity said. How long has this pass been here? Who built it? Would we be the first ones to take a tiger down it? "Maybe we should check it out," Shan said. "It might at least lead to someplace we can bed down for the night." Shan's curiosity cheered. Shan's common sense wept quietly by itself. |

Vyse road along for hours, sharing stories and playing little games, but it was getting late, and Umbriel would need a rest so she could stay in top shape. As they arrived at the pass Shan suggested taking the smaller road, Vyse rubbed his chin, then shrugged, might as well since they had nothing better to do. Vyse hopped off of Umbriel and helped Shan down, "We're going to need walk though, Umbriel might lose her balance with us on her while she walks this narrow path. Now lets go." He lead them down the narrow path, he smiled as it started to widen after about an hour of walking, allowing Umbriel to start walking with ease. Vyse started to look around, now that the path was wider he felt slightly safer about looking around, this was a mistake. He saw deep gouges in the stone, not by any human hands could this happen... perhaps a dwarf did this testing out some new device or alchemical charge. He nodded, that had to be it, but something was just nagging at the back of his mind, though he didn't pay it any attention... until it was far to late. After about another hour of walking the path go even wider, or the it at least started to bite into the mountain making it wider, now it was more then enough to hold five or six dire tigers the size of Umbriel without falling off. As they walked closer Vyse saw something with the walls... the stones looked half-melted, his eyes widened as the reality dawned upon him, this was a dragon's cave, he stopped in his tracks and put a finger to his lips to signal silence, then he whispered, "Shan... stay very, very, calm... look to your left, you'll see partially melted stones and deep gouges into the rocks... these also appear around the cave, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it's a dragon cave. So let's back away nice and slow and get out of here." Vyse took a few steps back, allowing himself to stand next to Shan. |

Shan inspected the walls, which looked like they once ran like melted wax, and the gouges that looked like nails dug through clay. Oddly enough, he stayed calm. Odd geographical features couldn't hurt you, after all. He was just shocked they got this much warning about a dragon in the vicinity. Wow! A dragon! I wonder what kind it is! How old is it? What does it eat up-urk! Shan's curiosity said before his common sense sneaked up behind it and placed it in a choke hold. "Alright," Shan said, the fog beginning to build up as the temperature dropped and light faded. "Let's head back." A sudden crack ripped the air, followed by a cacophonous cascade that seemed to keep echoing around the until the final rumbles and the quiet thereafter were almost unnaturally silent. Still staying calm, Shan moved around Umbriel to get a better view. "Um...We have a problem...The path is gone. "I mean, it's been a bit destroyed in that rockslide or...um..." Shan didn't want to say it. He really didn't want to say it aloud. "We might need to find another way." Don't say it aloud. "I think the dragon knows we're here." Godsdammit, now he's jinxed them. The wind began to pick up. Was it a storm? Was it wingbeats? Were they about to be incinerated where they stood? No, Shan thought, remain calm. There'll be plenty of reason to panic later. "Can you see anything, Vyse?" |

Vyse wanted to smack his head, the road was out, perfect. He felt the wind pick up... constantly hitting them with small blasts of wind, he turned to see a rather large black dragon, it's maw opening up, a purple glow starting to emanate from it. Vyse didn't miss a step, he took out his throwing mace and let it fly, hitting the side of the dragon's head, purple and black flames melting part of the rocks above them, the mace returning to Vyse's hand, allowing him to put it away quickly. He let out his extra arms, grabbing Shan by the collar he put him on top of Umbriel and smacked her haunches, Umbriel understood and ran into the cave with Shan on her back. Vyse turned his attention back to the dragon and yelled out, "Run Shan! I can take a single measly dragon!" He roared at it, taking out his blades Sopheur and Lita, along with his throwing mace, and his frost mace. The enchantments on his weapons sparked to life, holy, frost, and wounding enchantments giving three of his weapons auras of power, while his throwing mace just remained normal looking. He let loose his throwing mace again, hitting the dragon in the leg, running around the area he had, making sure to keep out of the bursts of flame, this was going to be a hard pressed fight. He first needed to figure out a way to force it to land... he would need to rely on his throwing mace. He kept on dashing around, making sure he was never in one place for more then a few seconds, he threw the mace several times, only to see the dragon dodge to the side or get barely clipped, but his empowered throwing did leave quite a few noticeable wounds. Finally though, a stroke of luck, his mace tearing through one of the wings of the dragon, spinning around for the returning enchantment it ripped through the other one, forcing the dragon to land, now the real battle would begin. |

Umbriel ran deep into the cave, Shan clinging as tight as a tick. The dire tiger going full pelt was a rush, but it mostly made Shan worried that he was going to sail off and break his neck. She finally slowed down, and Shan shakily dropped off in the most graceful manner one can manage when one lands on their bottoms. Umbriel, her task done, pattered back outside. "Okay, that's fine..." Shan said as he stumbled to his feet. "The dragon's outside. Go help Vyse." The tiger was already gone by the time he finished talking. Shan looked around. The cave was a huge cavern, with a few slight bends in the monstrous tunnel to hide the interior from the entrance. Vyse was fighting the dragon, presumably with Umbriel, and Shan would be worthless in such a fight. He knew this. The best thing he could do was explore the cave and find another exit. Keeping close to the wall, in case the dragon decided to dive back home, Shan rounded the next, surprisingly well-lit corner. He gasped. The cavern opened up into what seemed a hollow out mountain. Great pillars of rock supported the structure, seemingly carved out by claws. In the center was a glittering hill of treasure. The walls sparkled with glints of gold, silver, ruby, emerald and diamond rainbows. Wait, his logic said, No matter how fanciful tales may get, gold doesn't glow, so where's the light? Shan looked closer. All around and upon the pile were glowing artifacts, artistically arranged to make the treasure seemingly glow from its wealth alone. Taken on its own, it was a stunning piece of art. He drew closer. There was so much here; how much could he buy if he were just to fill his pockets? Probably a home, a steed, a means to never worry about his next meal for years. He reached out a hand... And pulled it back as if he touched a hot poker. What was he thinking? He was a bard! He'd heard more than enough stories to recognize a dragon horde when he say one, although this one was much better than the usual "heaps of gold" description. Dragons also, it was said, could tell if even a tiny ring was taken from their horde. Shan walked away to inspect the walls. He didn't need it anyway, he knew. The earlier instinct was pure greed, and he needed a way to get out of the mountains far more than he needed heavy pockets. He heard a sound behind him, like the scrape of scale against stone. He spun around, but there was nothing there. He searched the walls for an opening when he heard the sound again. He turned, and there was still only the glistening treasure. Were the shadows deeper now, or was that just his paranoia? The third time he turned his back, he heard the jingle of gold hitting gold. He turned again, and saw a beautiful woman, reclining on the dragon horde. Her dark dress reflected the gold in pinpricks of yellow light. Her black hair fanned out behind her. "What are you doing here, little man?" she asked, her voice husky and deep. "Are...Who are you? Is the dragon keeping you prisoner?" Shan asked, pushing his thoughts past his shock at her appearance and his libido. "I suppose in a way...yes," the woman said. "I assume to are here to escape from him or..." She picked up a handful of coins and let them slide back on the pile in a precious waterfall. "Are you hear to claim the dragon's gold?" "Um...I'm actually looking for the way out, miss. The dragon destroyed the path we took down here, and I'm trying to find another way. Do you know one? Have you found any?" "If you can fly, there is an opening at the top," she said, pointing a slender finger upward. "What is it you do, little man?" "I'm a bard," Shan said. "And I can't fly. My friend might, but I don't really know. He's fighting the dragon now." "A bard?" She said. "Gives you great wealth, does it?" "No, not really." "Enjoy it, do you?" "Well, yes. I mean, it's terrifying at times, like now, but overall, yes." Shan studied the woman, looking beyond her beauty and grace. "I mean, I'm not touching that pile, if that's what your saying. It belongs to that dragon, and I don't need money enough to risk my life..." Shan trailed off as he thought. She sat on the dragon's horde as easily as she'd recline on her bed. Her dresses pattern seemed to match scales far more than cloth, and her eyes, now that he focused on them. "You aren't really human, are you?" He finally said. She laughed and looked at him with reptilian eyes. "And what if I wasn't?" |

Vyse smirked, he was having all kinds of fun with this fight, he dodged to the side as the dragon struck forth, springing at it and slashing deeply into the side of it's neck, barely going through it's armor. Without his augmented strength he wouldn't be able to kill this thing, he needed more speed, he roared a familiar roar as Umbriel shot forward, ramming into it's side, knocking it off balance from the surprise attack. Umbriel ran to Vyse, lowering her head to allow Vyse to climb onto her back, it was no his and Umbriel's fight. The dragon reared back and roared, shooting out a stream of black flames, though now that Vyse and Umbriel were one once again, they moved to fast, dashing to the side and getting in close, his maces and blades hammering against the sides of the dragon. Vyse kept up his attacks, dashing in and out of it's reach, he had done this same strategy against the sludge drake, but this fire-breathing black scaled behemoth was a bit faster. He smiled, at this rate he would win in the end, that's when his plan fell apart, the dragon leaping into the air, it's wings flapping much faster and harder then before to compensate for the holes his mace tore, it's mouth started to glow, it looks like it'll be that much harder. Vyse spent his time dodging the short bursts of fire, watching as the stone around him started to glow red hot, trapping him and Umbriel between the glowing rocks. Vyse saw it raising it's head, this would be a big one, he whipped his mace at it, knocking it's mouth close, sending the flames down the other pipe, scorching it's insides, it crash landed onto the stone pathway, standing up, fires burning in it's eyes for revenge. Vyse spun his weapons as his mace returned to his hand, ready to fight till the end. |

"Well, we're talking, so that probably means I won't do anything, since you aren't trying to kill me. I doubt I could do much to you anyway. Like I said, I'm a bard, not a warrior." "Your friend is most certainly one, and skilled at that," she said, and reached behind her to grasp a large crystal ball. She tossed it in the air, where it hovered and projected an image of the fight outside. Vyse climbed upon Umbriel, and the two moved as though they were a single creature, each adjusting instantly to the movements of the other, and maneuvering to give the other the best tactical advantage. "Is...that your mate he's fighting?" Shan asked in dread. She scowled at the dragon image. "Hardly. He's a young, proud fool, and the rush of hormones males get during our season somehow made him believe he was worthy of me. This is the third time he's been around. The second time was far from a peaceful rejection, and his insolence was compounded by ruining my stonework outside. I'm sure you noticed the melted rock and clawmarks he left." She turned back to Shan. "Should I go aid your friend from him?" Shan watched Vyse force the dragon's mouth closed with his mace, causing the gout of flame to turn back on its owners insides. "I think he can handle it, Miss..." The woman laughed. "Indeed! He's more than strength enough, and certainly more cunning. The entire affair is fortuitous for me. Knowing that I witness him fall to a mere human should be enough for him to retire his pursuit for good, assuming he's not killed." Her eyes sparkled as she said this. "As for my name, I have been called Nix by other humans I have met. That name will do." "I'm glad things are working out for you then, Miss Nix." Shan said, feeling rather uncertain about what his fate would be if the battle went badly for Vyse. "There are only a few humans I haven't killed, little bard. Did you know that?" "I didn't, Miss Nix. Um, thank you for not killing me so far?" "The ones I met seemed to share your ability to turn from temptation. You'd be shocked how many think they could take a small trinket and I wouldn't notice. I would have killed you if you had taken anything, but you turned away from potential riches. I'm always curious why, since humans are such magpies for treasure." "Well, Miss Nix, I've heard enough tales about dragon hordes and, really, I never really handled money a lot growing up. I never needed it, and I've really only seen it as an alternate means to getting the necessities." He gave a weak smile. "It's amazing what you can get in exchange for a song." "Are you are utterly sincere saying that. What a strange little bard you are." She looked at the image again. "It looks as though the fight's about to end. I best make an appearance. Even if he dies, it would be nice to have him know that someone sees his failure and shan't forget. Stay here, little bard. I trust you with my horde, as I know you will obey your heart and not your greed." The beautiful woman lounging on gold and gems vanished. In her place, a great black dragon stretched her wings, her scales luminescent and claws slick and sharp. He, of course, couldn't be sure without a side-by-side comparison, but it seemed that of the two dragons, she was far more fearsome. With one downward beat of her wings, she launched herself to the top of the cave and out a small circle that framed the sky. Shan got up from the ground he'd been forced down too from the wind of her wings. Vyse will probably see that, his second thoughts said. It might be best to head him off at the pass. You know, warn him it's a friendly, even grateful dragon if he leaves her things alone. Shan brushed himself off and ran around the horde to the exit, hoping he headed Vyse off at the pass, and that he didn't end up dying. That was unlikely, Shan knew, but he also knew his luck. |

Vyse dismounted Umbriel for the last confrontation, he charged forward as the dragon shot out it's long neck, trying to use it's long fangs to rip Vyse to shreds, he easily dodged now though, the dragon was tired and burned out from using it's breath weapon far to much. He fought with it like this, dodging and slashing it's neck and jaws as it passed by, nicking it's claws and muscles, gaining confidence with each attack. Vyse sheathed his weapons after another set of attacks, he was ready for his plan, he waited for the dragon to charge him, not budging an inch, digging his feet in, catching the mouth just before it could fully open, he smiled as he pulled it apart using all four arms. The weakened scales and muscles in it's mouth and neck ripping apart, quite literally ripping the dragon's head and long neck in half, it's entire body lurching forward. Vyse was sprayed by the blood, covering most of his chest and legs. He sighed as he walked out from the bloody mess, grabbing the dragon's side and pushing it off the ledge. He smiled, until he heard the colossal wing beats of another dragon, he looked up to see it coming, and heard Umbriel growl, looking back at her he saw Shan, he called out, "What's going on here!? I just took care of one dragon and does that one want to make a meal out of me to!?" This one was much bigger, if he had to fight it he had no doubt that he would lose, it's size was colossal, even with Umbriel's speed he doubted that he could fight it. He walked back to Umbriel, meeting Shan halfway, waiting to hear what he has to say. |

"Vyse! It's okay!" Shan yelled out as he got closer. "That other dragon was her suitor and you killed him!" Shan stopped and review his sentence while Nix perched on a rock outcropping above them. "Okay, that didn't sound good. Let me try again. "From what I understand, it IS mating season, and that dragon was the equivalent of the drunk jerk with a sword constantly hitting on the woman warrior who has too many manners to kill him or something. She wanted him gone, but he kept coming back, and she's actually happy you killed him. Um, she might be even more happy because I think you killing that dragon is the same level of humiliation as me thrashing that jerk with a sword in my previous analogy in a duel. No offense. So...you know, she's not going to kill us as long as you don't try anything. Or touch her horde. Really don't do that. "Oh, her name is Nix. Um, Nix?" Shan said, turning to the dragon. "This is my friend, Vyse. Oh, and I'm Shan." Nix sat on her perch, studying them a few seconds longer than was comfortable, then darted back into the sky, flying back into the cave. "Um...Well, that went well, I suppose. I'm judging that on the fact that we're breathing-" Her black figure emerged from the cave once more, shifting into her human form and stood before them. "I realize I'm far less impressive in this form, but I doubt either of you speak dragon. So little warrior, it seems I have you to thank for taking care of that troublemaker. Such an act, though small, is impressive for a human. Perhaps there is something I can do for you, as a favor for a favor?"

Vyse looked at the dragon fly off... Shan said it's name was Nix, also that the male was effectively trying to push himself onto her for mating season and she simply wasn't interested. He smirked at the comparisons, though he didn't have much time as a woman walked back out, her dress seemed to be made of scales... it must have been the dragon. He listened to her and the thought of a dragon owing him favors wasn't a bad idea... but he would have to use it now, "I would like you to take Shan back up to the main path and make sure he makes it out of the dragonspine mountains, I don't really need any help getting up now that I don't have to worry about coming back for Shan." He made sure all of his weapons were secured tightly in their sheathes and in his holster, he walked over to Umbriel and picked up the cat like a baby in his four arms. He turned his head back to Shan, "I'm sorry but you'll have to walk the rest of the way by yourself or with Nix if she decides to walk you there, but think of it this way you get to spend the rest of the trip with a dragon that can turn into a beautiful woman, now I'm gonna go ahead. Until we meet again Shan." He leaped up, his draconic might boosting his leg strength allowing him make it to different landing areas, usually just rocks sticking out or anything he can get his foot on. He kept on jumping, in a few more leaps he'd be onto the path and after that, a short ride on Umbriel out of the mountains. |

"Um...bye..." Shan said as Vyse and Umbriel easily ascended the cliff face to the path above. "What an interesting friend you have. Can best a dragon and abandons you with another, far more powerful one," Nix said. "Still, taking on his task to aid you should satisfy the favor he is owed. So, little bard, where is it you wish to go?" "Um...I was headed west before we came down here so, um, I guess just taking me out of the mountains in that general direction would work..." "Very well. Let us go, then. The sooner you are gone, the sooner I can revel in the peace." Flying, Shan felt, was terrifying. The fact that this flight was done perched on the head of gigantic black dragon instead of, say, a pegasus or griffon, didn't help. He kept his eyes tightly sealed during the takeoff where he felt the earth fall away and each beat of her wings thrusting them upward and destablizing his grip on her horns. After a gut-wrenching eternity, they leveled off, and Shan risked a peek. The Dragon Spine Mountains laid beneath a blanked of white, only tall peaks jutting up like ancient, jagged trees. The air was cold and thin here, and the breathtaking view wasn't helping. The only sound this high was the sound of wind over Nix's gliding leather wings. The stars overhead were brighter and clearer than he'd ever seen, and the shifting clouds glowed in the moonlight. Shan was rather saddened when Nix finally banked to land. He was also filled again with terror. They touched down in the foothills of the Dragon Spine. Shan shakily slid down and collapsed on the earth. There was a sudden shift in the mass of the person behind him, and he turned to see human Nix. "Well, you are now safely out of the mountains," Nix said. "If you walk that direction for half a day, you will reach a human settlement. I'd rather not rile up dragon hunters by getting closer when my life has finally returned to serenity." "Thanks for the ride, Nix," Shan said finding his feet again. "It was, um, an experience meeting you." "Likewise, little bard, and so you know, despite what your little warrior friend insinuated, you also don't have a chance with me." "I figured that..." Shan said. Nix smiled. "Well, perhaps sometime we may cross paths again. At least I will you know you are one of the better class of humans. Farewell, little bard." Shan watched Nix fly away until her silhouette faded in the clouds. Well, Vyse got to beat up a dragon, which has probably made his week. You've insulted a caravan driver with an offensive and racist joke, and made friends with a dragon, or at least weren't eaten by her. Not only that, we made it though the mountains without dying, Shan's second thoughts summarized. I'd call today a win overall. "Yeah," Shan said to himself. He turned and began trekking to town. "I wouldn't have minded standing a chance, though..." |
