Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Sebastian stared at his left arm with disgust. He told the worthless muscles to contract, commanded his fingers to curl, but they didn't move. They twitched, his forearm shook violently, but his hand would not close. Worthless limb. The healers of Taras cast regenerative magic like the bartenders of Taras made drinks. In Striberg, his arm would have been good as new--probably better--by now.

"You're making progress. The important thing is that you don't push it too much and it'll be good as new by your next fight," the nurse said, placing her hand sympathetically on Sebastian's forearm. The touch hardly triggered a sensation in his skin; the healers' Regeneration spells required every nerve in his new arm to reconnect with his brain. "How are your burns?"

Sebastian lifted the white cotton gown he was required to wear over his torso and the nurse immediately frowned. His neck and left breast were still scarred and purplish, many shades darker than the rest of his pale blue torso. His right forearm was similarly afflicted. She dipped a washcloth in a brownish solution and began applying it to Sebastian's burns, lightly dabbing his damaged skin. Sebastian couldn't help but wince.

"The salve won't be able to take effect if you don't get enough sleep," the nurse said, sighing as she turned to apply more of the solution to her cloth. It was difficult to sleep more than 3 or 4 hours of the night with Seele's golden eyes upon him in every feverish dream he endured.

"Nightmares," Sebastian grunted and looked away, his eyes closed as he waited for the stinging to subside. He heard another sigh of discontent from his nurse and gave a snort, sounded somehow wounded.

"It's not every day you get in a fight with the God of the Night..." the nurse tried, apologetically. Sebastian didn't open his eyes and responded in a cold tone.

"It's not every day I lose."

As the nurse finished applying the mixture, she gave another heavy sigh and collected her materials into a neat pile on the bedside table. She rose from the side of the bed where she had set herself next to Sebastian's half-laying, half-sitting form and as she did, he swung his legs out over the bedside and brought himself to a sitting position. The muscles in his back protested and he emited a slight groan of pain.

"Sleep, Sebastian," the nurse said before pursing her lips tightly, deep frown lines forming on her brow as she spoke over her shoulder. Sebastian was reminded of his mortal mother and his chest puffed out. Clearly, he would not be patronized tonight.

"I have an errand to run," the swordsman spat as he stood, steadying himself with his right hand on the bedpost. His eyes flashed a malicious cyan as he said this.

"Then send someone to run it for you. It's late, and if you don't rest, your arm will be a lump of flesh for your next fight. It could get worse if you don't sleep on it," the nurse warned, standing in the doorway of Sebastian's tent. Again, the genasi's glowing blue eyes flashed with frustration and she gave a sigh of resignation."Very well," she said relentingly, shrugging as she left.

Sebastian had business in town, today. In his tent, he had heard word of a syndicate of the shadows, one that promised protection -- and power -- to those who had been denied it. Somewhere in Taras, the Shadow Society had a temporary headquarters set up. Whether or not it was because of the Summer Sun Tournament, Sebastian couldn't know, but he needed to find them while he knew where to find them. He had interest, especially in their method.

His footsteps fell hard and loud as he stomped along the rainy streets of Taras. The weather had changed drastically since his last fight, and he wouldn't be surprised if it was still raining for his second fight. There was water everywhere, and Sebastian greatly prefered this to the sweltering heat and dryness of the prior several days.

As he reached the door of un indescriptinate, old building, he slowed his pace and reached for the door handle, finding the entrance to simplu swing open at the slightest touch. For a moment, he wondered what sort of suprise was in store today.

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. The old song was being hummed in the main room of the empty building. This part of Taras hasn’t been rebuilt yet. Nobody really bugged the group of people that moved into one of the buildings. It was made known that it was only temporary accommodation. They even stayed to themselves, not like anyone was living in this area. The City of Taras was still under reconstruction, what a shame it was really. At least something was being done about it.

Evals was sitting down and staring out the window as she hummed the song. Rain, rain. Patience was a virtue she lacked but the frustration of waiting had already passed and she had zoned out into a half conscious state. Go away, come again another day. There were a few other members of the Shadow Society inside of the building, doing their own thing really. These ones were under Evals’ direct command so they were with her on this… business trip. Plus seeing the tournament is a bonus for all of them.

Then there was a sound at the door. Who was it? Dark Scouts returned? “Claes, go check the door.” Evals interrupted her humming to continue her laziness. The person that was sitting halfway across the room and reading a newspaper made a very audible sigh. “Yes Maaa’aaam.” He groaned and went down the stairs to the first floor to check on the door. “Don’t have to be rude about it.” There were mumbling complaints from the stairwell. Evals got up, half tempted to go down there and see who it was herself just to shut Claes up.

At the door, Claes approached the opening door. “Who is it?” He asked before seeing who it was. He pulled the door open fully. Claes himself was dressed in everyday clothing that a normal civilian would wear. In one hand he held a knife despite that. The most distinguishing thing about him was that half of his face was rotted off, he had no hair on his head, and he only had one eye. One eye that opened in shock. “Oh Gods, hold on one second!” He said in a panicked tone and went to grab something out of a drawer of an old dresser. “What is going on, is it not the Scouts?” The child zombie said as she walked down the stairs after hearing the small amounts of ruckus.

The girl stood at the bottom of the stairs, inspecting the person in the doorway. Looked familiar, who was it? It’s like a face she saw but didn’t find it important enough to remember. She put her hands on her hips. “Can we help you?” She inquired, sounding a little annoyed. Though mostly at her own incapability to place his face. “Yes he can.” Claes said coming back over with a pencil and a piece of paper. “Can I have your autograph?” He asked with hopeful enthusiasm. What in all of the Abyss was going on?

As the door swung open, Sebastian was immediately greeted by a man who was quite clearly no longer a man. The bald, rotting man was dressed in plainclothes, and put frankly, could just as easily have been a rather chipper leper than an undead servant. In fact, the swordsman would likely have reacted quite normally to the man's rather shocking appearance if it hadn't been for the knife he held in his hand. Sebastian's eyes narrowed and his heart skipped a beat when he layed eyes on the short blade, and though he restrained himself, he immediately stroked the hilt of the blade on his left hip. He had only equipped himself with one of his twin blades this evening.

The man seemed suddenly very excited to be seeing Sebastian, and at first, he wasn't quite sure why. The zombie seemed rather silly, fumbling around in dresser drawers, excitement and bewilderment on his once-dead face. The genasi wanted to say something, to ask if he could come in, or to see if perhaps he could speak with someone who was higher up the ranks than the quite clearly subordinate undead doorman, but he wasn't quite sure how to react, or whether this undead doorman was even sane. There was a voice from upstairs, the voice of a girl, and Sebastian wondered quite what he had just stumbled into.

"Can we help you?" Sebastian heard, and his bright blue eyes darted to the staircase, where, at the foot of the bottom stair, there stood a young girl of perhaps 11 or 12 years old. She had pale, pale skin and dark, dark hair, and her eyes seemed to glow white in the din of the run-down buidling. There was something striking about this young girl's appearance, but Sebastian couldn't place it. He was about to answer when the bumbling man who had answered the door answered first.

"Yes he can. Can I have your autograph?" the zombie asked, stretching out his hand, which was clutching a writing tool and a scrap of paper for him to take. Then Sebastian understood. He had forgotten quite how many people had witnessed his battle with Seele, and for a moment he was ashamed of his loss once more. However, the hopeful smile of the undead man before him made it evident that Sebastian, the nobody who had stood up to the former God of Shadows, had become rather popular in Taras. He wondered how many people even knew he had survived.

An amused smirk came to the frostborne's face, and he scribbled his name in shorthand onto the piece of paper. He tended to have a weakness for attention and praise, but he couldn't let himself forget his mission; he would only entertain his fan's request. Perhaps it would ease his chances of being accepted into their ranks.

"My name is Sebastian, son of Rimeheart, and I request to speak with whomever is in charge of recruitment," the genasi answered the little girl's question, wondering if she was another servant who would fetch him the appropriate ranking officer.

Squee. Claes had an autograph from the man who stood up against the God of Darkness. “Thank you, thank you.” He said and moved off to the side at the notice of the Shadow Master standing there waiting. He moved back towards the stairs and whispered to the small girl. “He is the one from the tournament, the one who had his arm blown off.” Evals only made an “O” shape with her mouth at the realization. With that he silently walked back upstairs to continue reading the newspaper or something.

So there was a tournament fighter here now, named Sebastian, son of Rimeheart, asking for recruitment. So he was here for the Shadow Society or he thought this was a book club or something. The Shadow Master would’ve rolled her eyes if she could’ve, but they were blank. Claes didn’t help their image either, but at least he made them seem more human from his actions. An autograph? Celebrities were such a silly concept, why did they deserve recognition anyways?

Moving her hands off of her hips, Evals looked around the room. She gestured towards the table that had a few chairs, and a crate that was in a position where one would expect a chair to be. She went over and took a seat in one of the chairs. “Sit, we’ll talk.” She commanded and waited for him to take a seat. Why did he want to join the Shadow Society anyways? Did he support their goals, some reason felt like he was a part of them…. Or was it more power? Power was something that most people, if not everyone aimed for. Could be boredom too; never know until they speak up.

Once Sebastian took a seat, Evals leaned forward with her elbows on the table, hands folded and angled a bit upwards as she thought for a moment. Her eyes were focusing towards the Gensai. What type was he? She couldn’t place it but he was close enough to Human in her opinion. He just had a little different colouration and temperature. Then again, when it came to the Shadow Society, race was thrown out the window. Nobody deserved to be put down for what they were born as. Not even if they were useless.

Joining us is a pretty big dedication. Not like we’re going to absorb all of your time but working for the society is a big help, whether it’s under orders or volunteer work.” Evals wasn’t sure how to put things all the time, but tried her best. Pointing her thumbs out she wanted to know more about this Gensai before she let him in, if she did in the end. Was he even useful? “What reason do you want to join us? Is it worth it to you? Would you sacrifice everything you had for it, came the need?” Hopefully this would be the hook, let him explain all he wanted to now. She would listen until it got boring and she zoned out.

Sebastian sighed as the zombie took his autograph gratefully. In a way, Claes' reaction to the tournament champion was flattering, but at the same time, it was slightly offending. Sebastian hadn't defeated Seele. In fact, he had only barely been a match for the dark sorcerer, and the potency and elegance with which the former god cast his magic made it very, poignantly clear that he had had far more arcane power than he used in that fight.

As the zombie went up upstairs, Sebastian seemed to be left alone with the little girl and her tiny white eyes. It was awkward, trying not to be rude but desiring to speak with someone. He wondered why the little girl stood there and no one came to speak with him officially. Had he walked into some sort of casual house party? Or was she the recruitment officer?

"Sit, we’ll talk," the little girl said after sitting at the one table in the room. The bounty hunter complied, taking a seat atop the crate, opposite Evals' chair. So she was the recruitment officer after all, and Sebastian realized why. The girl had an air to her that connoted respectable age. Although she appeared to be a little girl, Sebastian could tell that the zombie had many more years to her than her first glance impression. Secondly, the swordsman, being rather adept at magic despite his small practical knowledge of it, could sense that the small girl had a large and deadly arsenal of spells at her disposal. For the first time in his life, Sebastian was afraid of a child.

"Joining us is a pretty big dedication. Not like we’re going to absorb all of your time but working for the society is a big help, whether it’s under orders or volunteer work," the explained, and Sebastian raised an eyebrow. Under his snow-white hair and sky-blue cowl, the gesture was probably not visible, but Sebastian nodded anyway.

"What reason do you want to join us? Is it worth it to you? Would you sacrifice everything you had for it, came the need?" The girl's words were vague. Sebastian knew that the society was shelter to a host of necromancers and dark magicians, and that, if they had a headquarters, they were likely to have an extensive library of exactly the kind of magic sought by the genasi. He wouldn't let his primary goal overshadow his loyalty, however, as he carefully worded his response.

"I sit before you, clearly not human. I am less than a half-breed; I am no human, no elf, no elemental, but I have all three in my bloodstream, and thus, I have no real home. I come to you seeking refuge, power, acceptance, and knowledge, and I offer to you my steel, my magic, and of course, my loyalty," Sebastian explained. This was not the whole truth, but he would not go into details of the entirety of his dark desires.

Evals nodded at that. So he was just an outcast, though something didn't add up it made enough sense for her. Yet she still wanted to know more. More about him... At this point it was just curiousity. She took one of her hands off the table and reached into her utility belt. Grabbing a small object, she clenched it within her hands. She put her hand on the table, still closed.

"When I open my hand, tell me what you see." She said this calmly and then slowly opened her hand. There was a small ring of impact as it fell an inch onto the table. She moved her hand away and there was the gem of desire. Of course, it would look like something completely different to Sebastian. "Do not touch it or even reach for it, no matter what." She commended, because of course that wasn't really a test, it just sounded like one.

If he touched it, he would be transported to the ceiling, since that was as far as he could go. She didn't want that, of course. Now if he would only tell her what he saw there. Evals moved her hands back to clasping each other, and they formed a conjoined fist, of sorts. She watched him curiously, seeing if he would break and reach for the object or not.

Sebastian nodded as Evals gave her instructions. Was this some sort of test? It could have been a test of skill or proficiency. He braced himself for whatever the child death had in store. He had set the genasi up for some sort of ink blot test, a rorschach psychoanalysis, but it could not possibly be so simple. Could it be that Evals was merely getting to know him?

Plunk. The object was released from her hand, and it fell onto the table with a small clatter. Sebastian immediately furrowed his brow, but he heeded the zombie child's commands. It was a figuring, a tiny ivory figurine of himself lying on the table, standing maybe nine inches. The think was beautifully decorated, incredibly detailed, impecably accurate, and terribly troubling. Who had crafted this thing? Had Evals known Sebastian would be here? This girl was incredibly mysterious.

Upon inspection, though, it became apparent that this was not a simple statue of the genasi. There was something strange about it, something new. Something about the way its features were placed suggested that it was a far scaled down model of something much much larger, a great obelisk, reaching into the sky, majestic and permanent. The figure wore a crown, but not the crown of a king, the crown of a God. Sebastian was worshipped. He was immortal. This statue represented everything he aspired to be.

"It's a model of me," Sebastian said. "A tiny figurine, wearing a crown. How did you get this...?" he continued, marvelling, unsure how to react. When Evals once more hid the object between her hands, it took a small push of willpower to keep from reaching for it, to run his fingers over the smooth figurine just once, to feel that power in his hands, even if only symbollic.

Evals nodded and took the gem back into her hand. While she thought about it, she dropped he object into a small pouch on her utility belt before putting both hands back together and resting them on top of the table. "A little birdie told me." She answered as a spider came out of her hair and crawled across her face only to vanish again by going behind her neck. A little dead birdie, at that.

A figurine of him with a crown. That took a minute of thought to completely figure out, but she got it. "You want power. You don't wish to be restrained by the limits of the average Man, Elf, Elemental, no mortal. Make the world yours, or maybe just a part of it." Evals treated it like a question but refused to word it as one. She had to make sure that he believe she already knew everything.

An Ambitious man, what to do with those. To let him into the Shadow Society or not. She would, of course. Yet make him tell her why she should. A small smirk spread across her pale face. "I saw your performance in the tournament. It takes talent to lose that badly." The zombie mocked him, that wasn't entirely true though. It was the former God of Darkness and Sebastian stood up to him quite well. "Does our Society really want someone that weak..." Yes, yes they did.

For a moment, Sebastian saw red. His left hand came down harder on the table than self-restraint should have allowed, and an agony like lightning seared through his arm, the bones feeling close to splintering under the force of the slam. He winced and pulled his arm away from the table, the pain doing little to despell his frustration. If he wasn't careful, the nurse was going to be right about his new arm.

"Weak!? I was placed against a fomer God!" he roared at the girl, leaning across the table, his frozen breath pouring out to tickle her face. "Place me against any mortal man and I will end him in a heartbeat," he boasted, his nostrils flared. He was making a fool of himself.

He breathed deeply to calm himself, and with the frosty exhalation, his eyes, which had been shining fiercely, dimmed to neutral. "I'm sorry, but your words stung my pride..." he muttered apologetically, folding his hands in his lap, his eyes squinted. "You are correct in your knowledge of my desires, but this does not mean I will not be a faithful asset to your Society," he said, breathing deeply between words. Hot tears stung his eyes as he struggled to restrain his heartbeat.

"I fight better than many men, even if I could not defeat Seele," he suddenly said, after a long pause.

Evals moved a hand to something below the table when an arm slammed down upon it. She would end his life if this was going to turn hostile. Looks like he wasn't happy about her choice of words. The smirk on her lips only vanished for a moment before turning into a larger smile. He was arrogant enough. She attempted to ignore his close proximity to her being, though. That didn't go so well and she leaned back to get a bit of distance.

"Former being the key word." From what Evals saw of Seele, she could have lasted much longer against the former God than Sebastian. Maybe even win, then again what could he do to her? She would have to examine his powers more if she wanted an accurate depiction. "Then, Sebastian. Do you think you could end me in a heartbeat?" The zombie asked, deadpan voice and stared directly into the Frost Gensai's face.

Evals may not be mortal but she wasn't unkillable. She may be Undead but she was still Human. Would Sebastian take her up on that challenge, though? Destroying someone that wanted to join the Shadow Society was not on her agenda today. "Of course your desires are of no major concern, yet. They will be if you attempt to reach them by stabbing us in the back or compromise us with your... inability to be strong." She tried to word weak as nicely as possible.

Sebastian coughed quietly and closed his eyes, leaning back again and slouching in his seat. His breaths came out as billows of freezing mist. It wasn't fair what this girl was doing to him. The swordsman was a spoiled brat, and she knew it. He wasn't so used to losing or not getting his way.

His eyelids flicked open again, and his eyes were dim and clear. His cheeks, which had been hot from increased blood flow, where now white and flushed. "You are no mortal man," he answered her challenge. He would not allow himself to be riled again. He would not give this interrogator the satisfaction. "I do not wish to fight you, or any member of the Shadow Society. It would have been ridiculous for me to come to your institution, in the state I am now, wishing for a fight."

"Of course your desires are of no major concern, yet. They will be if you attempt to reach them by stabbing us in the back or compromise us with your... inability to be strong," Evals explained, trying to be polite. The insult was still clear though, and Sebastian felt his heart jump into his throat. He forced it down his esophagus.

"Watch my next match and I assure you I will not lose. Watch me dominate every opponent I am matched with, and I will prove to you my strength is worth consideration," Sebastian said, his fists clenched beneath the table. "Give me my chance and I won't disappoint you."

"Very well." Evals said, getting up from the table. Her chair sliding across the floor as she pushed it back. She turned and walked across the room. What now, she didn't have much else to say. "I will give you your chance. Though if you do disappoint me... what do you think is a suitable punishment?" She asked calmly as she walked around to him, standing in front of him and looking down on him in his seated position. Yet it was barely, even in while sitting he was almost eye level with her. She really was a small child.

"What would you say? Death for your false claims? If you're so confident, you have nothing to worry about. Isn't that right?" It was loose intimidation at this point. He didn't really have to say anymore, but Evals was merely trying to push his buttons. See if he would snap again, play with his anger. If he got angry easily then he might be more useful as a meat shield than an actual member.

"I'm confident, but I'm no fool," Sebastian said, his eyes dimming now, dangerously dull in constrast to their previous blazing. It was one thing to boast of one's own strength for the purpose of moral, but to wager his own life over it to prove a point was the logic of a fool. "That four-armed one with his tiger..." Sebastian muttered, simply musing to himself aloud, "Him I worry about." He hadn't actually seen Vyse fight, but he had heard stories of his strength and resolve, and his stunning ability to wield four weapons simultaneously. Even two could be a task for Sebastian at times.

"Is my application suitable?" Sebastian asked the girl, cocking his head to own side. "When will I know if I am accepted into the Society? And when will I know your name?" he asked, putting emphasis on the final word. He had offered his own name before the interview had began, considering it to be a matter of ettiquette, but still, he did not know the game of the strange little girl who was quite clearly a high-ranking member of the Society.

This in itself was puzzling. The girl was quite clearly of high authority in the organization, clearly far superior to Claes, who had answered the door. She had conducted the recruitment interview, and she possessed strange magic and a keen intellect, both of which intimidated the genasi, despite her tiny stature.

Four armed one with a tiger? "That mutant of a man? He isn't that much of a problem, though I will tell you that he has insane strength. He has a way to negate spells, which I assume is in his helm. Oh, there is also something odd about him that... nevermind You'll find out if you have to fight him." Evals said and cut herself off before she went off subject This was about Sebastian, not that mutant she fought in Cascadia.

Thinking about Sebastian... Evals stepped back to give him some distance and offered her hand to him for a handshake. Hopefully not unnerving that it was covered in metal. The smile returning to her face, this time lighthearted than anything else. "Welcome to the Shadow Society, Sebastian, son of Rimeheart. I am Shadow Master Evals Gottschalk." Sebastian was part of the Society now, so what to do with him. She remembered that one of his arms had been blown off by the former God of Darkness, yet he had two. The healers for the tournament must be something. "You're welcome to stay here but considering your attire... you may wish to return to where you came from."

Sebastian listened intently to the girl's tips. He needed to know everything he could about every contenstant in the loser's bracket. He needed to have an edge over his opponents, to learn their strengths and their weaknesses. But he was puzzled with the zombie interrupted herself. His lips curled into a deep frown, and his brow wrinkled noticeably beneath his messy white hair.

"Welcome to the Shadow Society, Sebastian, son of Rimeheart. I am Shadow Master Evals Gottschalk," the girl said, finally introducing herself, and Sebastian took her metal handshake, his own skin feeling soothed against the cool steel. So he had been correct in his suspicions. This girl was far more than she appeared, in fact, she was a Shadow Master of the Society. Sebastian was unfamiliar with the guild's hierarchy, but he assumed that this girl was powerful indeed.

"You're welcome to stay here but considering your attire... you may wish to return to where you came from." For a second, Sebastian was confused by her words, and then he remembered that he was still wearing the attire he had been given by the tournament's healers, a white cotton gown over a short pair of thin trousers he had slept in for the past two nights. He knew embarrassment, and his cheeks were touched with a violet color as red blood rushed to the skin.

"I have only one question before I leave," Sebastian said. "I seek a master of necromancy, one who can teach me something about the Art they wield," he explained. "You, being full of connections I'm sure, wouldn't happen to know where I could find one, would you?"
