| Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit. Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own. In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins. There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free. Create a character now! If you're already a member, you can log into your account below: |

He saw the demon pick up Dain, he was using him as a shield from his arrows as he tried to squeeze him to death. He put an arrow onto his bow, whispering a short prayer to whatever god was out there for a chance to kill the beast. He saw it drop him, better, now if only it was distracted... that's when the fly dragon buzzed it with a magic missile, forcing it to rear back and flinch. Tand's eyes widened, perfect shot, he let loose an arrow directly into it's throat, a bloody gurgle escaping it's maw as it looked at Tand, getting ready to charge him. Tand didn't miss a beat though, he fired a second arrow, burying it deep into it's chest, a third, and a fourth, all buried into it's chest, only inches apart. The demon was upon him, it grabbed Tand and he threw him, straight down into the ground, he felt the wound on the back of his head burst open, he was feeling woozy as he did it a second time. The demon picked him up and was preparing for a third slam, he looked Tand in the eye, his eyes were still full of life. He blinked in confusion, most men would be dead by now... he was to late in realizing what was happening, Tand quickly brought up his bow, firing his final arrow into it's eye, piercing it through the head. The demon screeched as it fell over, screaming in pain as it's body slowly started to set on fire. Tand dropped to the floor, he didn't want to move... he had barely held onto his bow, even luckier that the demon wanted to look him in the eye one last time. He sat up, looking as the demon started to fade away, it was dead... though that means several others were probably arriving in Chaon soon, not to mention he would have to explain everything to Dain... he sighed, it was going to be a long day. He laid his hand on his chest, letting magic wash over him, "Vigoratus." The wound stopped bleeding, that was all a spell that weak could really do, oh well, now to wait for Dain to interrogate him. He wasn't looking forward to it, though Dain at least deserved some answers... unless he wanted to let him walk free... nah, he was a paladin, they did tend to have sticks up their nether regions about this kind of thing. |

Despite being on its last legs, the greater demon still managed to cling to life, rushing the archer even as the man fired arrow after arrow into its body, each piercing into its flesh. He stepped forward, intending to strike again as the man was thrown to the ground, his mouth opening to shout an incantation, but there was no need. Tandorus was able to finish it himself, one last arrow driving through its eye and skull to finally put an end to the creature. He watched as the creature began to disintegrate, its bones crumbling, dissolving into nothing but a pile of sand and dust. He wasn't surprised; many demons didn't have the same kind of bodies as humans, and when they died the cursed blood holding them together stopped flowing. The result was what he had just seen. His body ached, and each breath was agonizing, but he was alive, and in much better shape than he would normally be after such an intense fight. Maybe I'm getting stronger? Aanon's voice sounded amused. Just like that? You're not even a true paladin yet. You have a long, hard road ahead of you. The words were hardly encouraging, but he knew they were true. He didn't have near the power that the true warriors of his Order had posessed, and until he did, he would be unable to avenge them. He had to get stronger. No matter what it took, he would prove to the celestial that he was worthy of its strength, and when he finally obtained it, the wretched beings of the abyss would regret the day they were born. He was getting ahead of himself, though, and currently he had a man to question. He turned to him, his voice harsh as he spoke. "That demon said that you make a pact with demons. What kind of pact? And why!?" He tried to stay calm, but a hint of anger could be heard in his tone. He sheathed his sword, but if the man's answers did not satisfy, he was prepared to draw it again in an instant. Foolish humans who allowed themselves to become puppets to the abyss were just as foul as demons themselves, and he would purge them along with the rest of the filth. He would give no mercy, none at all, to his enemies. |

Tand nodded, "I made a deal with'em to save all of Istan... over eight hundred years ago. You should sit down Dain, this is going to be a long story." He himself stood up, limping to a wall, sitting down and resting himself on it, it felt good to sit down. He continued on, "My name... is Tandorus Elderson, don't bother trying to think of me in any of the history books for Istan military history, I was purged from all written history except for a few tall tales and chidren's stories. I was a simple nobleman, forced into the military by his parents. I was, of course, rapidly promoted, though not from my family's name, but from my skill with a bow and my ability to command and adapt in fights, though I'm a bit weaker now wouldn't you say?" He chuckled then grimaced, laughing hurt. He continued his story, "In a matter of... I think two years, I was given my own special unit to command, they were the best archery division in all of Istan History, the Black Bows, even though they are listed in history I was never named their leader... ingrates." He scowled, the Istani were great people, though they didn't give him enough credit. He frowned as he continued on, this is where it started to go bad, "I became a decorated commander, got a wife, had kids... I was off duty for several years, only to be pulled back into service because of a large invading force, they didn't know what or who it was, just that it was large, faster, and had killed any Istani that came across it. So they gathered one thousand people... volunteers and slaves mostly. The nobles had a plan to summon demons, paying their debt with one thousand lives, though not many had magical prowess or was willing to try and deal with the demons... but I was different, I dealt with the demons and sacrificed one thousand lives... to save all of Istan." He stopped, he felt really tired, probably the blood loss getting to him... maybe he should rest his eyes... no, he needed to finish the story, "So the demons took the souls, they were so happy and compliant they cursed me with immortality and flew off to destroy the enemy forces, they did so quickly and now we had several very powerful demons loose in the Istan desert. I spent the next year tracking down and killing them, one by one by one... until I couldn't take it anymore. I ran off with my family, my wife and six children, my parents and siblings, even my wife's parents, only for them to be slaughtered a few weeks later, many demons attacked our caravan... I don't remember how many demons I killed. I just remember this overwhelming sorrow and anger, for the next century I wandered the desert hunting demons and helping out those in danger, is that enough to satisfy your curiosity? If so, my head feels like it's been split clean in two, do you have another healing spell left in ya?" He didn't want to touch the wound himself, it might break back open, now all that was left was for Dain to either kill him or spare him. |

Ignoring the man's suggestion, he remained standing, arms crossed as he listened to the archer's tale. Most people would say it was nothing more than a story, a make-believe fantasy, and he had no concrete evidence to know for sure that it wasn't. History had only been a vague part of his training, and Istan's legends hadn't been included at all. However, he knew the kind of deals demons struck, and their conditions, and what Tandorus described sounded similar to countless other cases he had learned of. Besides, what the man have to gain by lying? If anything, he only stood to lose something if his words were satisfactory. Dain decided to believe him. But that brought up the decision of what to do with the man. He had commited one of the greatest sins, and furthermore, he had involved others, innocents, in his crime. The end did not justify the means, not in this situation. He removed his helmet, and his angered eyes stared openly at him. No matter his rage, however, he knew what was the proper thing to do. "Your punishment is fitting of your crimes, though it is a shame that your family was slain due to your foolishness. How do you live with yourself?" He sighed. "I have no right to claim the power of judgement. However, hear me now. You will not be redeemed until you save one thousand lives. Your immortality will make this possible." If the man would not die from aging, then he could at least use it for the greater good. Walking over to him, he raised a hand, intoning flatly. "Life, heal him." He turned as the magic took effect. Before him, he saw a door, almost hidden behind the thick layer of dust that covered it, and he walked towards it, hand running along it as he searched for some way to open it. Finding none, he took a step back, frowning. How does this thing open? he questioned Aanon. Be creative. Grunting, the paladin hauled off and slammed his foot against the door, once, twice, and the entire wooden frame collapsed in a shower of dirt and dust than set him into a fit a coughing that lasted half a minute. When he was finally able to breathe again, he entered the room, eyes peering around. His sword provided enough light to see, and it wasn't difficult to notice the short pedestal on which the black gemstone, ball-shaped and as large as a child's-fist rested. He recoiled as he mentally surveyed it for signs of magic; the entire room was like a maelstrom of arcane energy. It swirled madly about the one, seemingly mundane object, and he knew instantly that this was what the demons had been searching for. He reached a hand out to touch it, but was stopped with a shout in his head. Do not! He hesitated, and Aanon explained. That thing has been attuned to the abyss. It is meant to create a portal...a link for easy travel to this realm. Do you really want to know what would happen if you touched it? No, he didn't. But he had to ask anyway. Are you certain? Yes. Destroy it, but from a distance. He looked back behind him, to Tandorus. "Your redemption can begin here. The demons were planning to use that thing as a tool to cross over. Take care of it, would you?" He stepped aside, giving the archer room to do his work. |

He rolled his eyes, typical paladin, automatically thinking it was his plan, he was just the fingers releasing the arrow, not the bow or the arrow, just the mediator between. He felt the magic heal his wounds, he felt much better, but soon after he saw him batter down the door and look at something... when he stepped away and mentioned redemption he smirked, "Redemption for what? Doing the dirty work of the Sultan and the nobles, doing my duty as a soldier... you have no right to talk Dain, after all, there are plenty of paladins out there that have done worse then me." He stood up, taking one of the arrows from the ground, it was charred black from being inside the demon, he knocked the arrow and looked at the small stone, it was an easy target. He fired the arrow, he saw it slide into the tiny gem, the entire thing started crackling with demonic power... and then simply fizzled out. He nodded once, it was satisfactory, "Don't lecture me again about dealing with demons, I've done the work, I've redeemed myself after one hundred years of hunting them in desert without a word of thanks, you're even on my level yet Dain. On terms of becoming a force of good, you're farther ahead then me, though doing what it takes to win and save a country for a measly thousand people, what would you do Dain? Let your country die at the hands of the invaders and die a 'glorious death?" His voice dripped venom at the word 'glorious' how he hated that word. He continued on, "Or would you do what it takes to do your duty and save your loved ones, you lord, and those you serve... no matter what choice you choose, neither is good. I will live with my choice as I have done for over eight hundred years... if we meet again, I hope you will have matured as a paladin and as a person. Just understand that there is what you should do, and what you must do, paladins tend to forget that." He picked up what few arrows were still undamaged and walked out the door. As soon as he turned the corner he started to run, if the paladin was going to kill him he would have to catch him. |

He watched with bated breath as the arrow struck the object, and sighed as it shattered from the force of the shot. The intense magical barrage swirling around it faded as soon as it was destroyed, much to his relief, and he nodded to himself. Another threat terminated, and the world was safer for it. He turned back to Tandorus, just as the archer began to speak. He could hear the irritation in the man's voice, and his own face turned into a scowl. Having said his peace, Tandorus walked away, and Dain took a step after him, opening his mouth to call for him to halt. But Aanon's voice was sharp. Leave him. Dain responded, angrily. He needs to take responsibility for his deeds! In his mind, he has. There is nothing you can do to change his mind. Besides, you have much larger things to worry about. That portal...there must be more like it. The paladin looked over to where the fragments of the gem lay. He knew that Aanon was right; this wouldn't be the only attempt to create paths into the mortal realm. If the fiends discovered a way to transport them, they might even be able to open one in the middle of a city, like Cascadia. The thought of demons pouring forth, obliterating yet another city, made his blood run cold, and slowly, he nodded. You're right. He made his way out of the room and the ruined building, his eyes peering through the night for any sign of Tandorus, but it seemed the man was long gone. He shook his head, muttering under his breath. "I'll let you go for now..." He slammed his sword into its sheath and planted his helm back on his head as he began the long trek back through the abandoned city. "But I won't forget you." |
