Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

It had been several weeks since the events in Balefire. The assassination of Garth seemed to have gained her some favor with Seele, but the man was still a complete mystery to her. He acted as a slave, but there were certain things about him that did not fit a slave. Like his ability to fight, she knew from personal experience that slaves with those abilities did not stay slave unless forced by magical means. Also the guards gave him far more respect than a slave, no matter their rank, would ever be given.

She had summoned an imp she had known from her time in hell to do a bit of digging around for her. He was taking his time with the research, but she had a feeling that she would be contacted by him soon. If he did not return soon…well then she might just have to resort to other means of gathering information.

Thankfully, her patience seemed like it was about to pay off. When she was in the privacy of her room, she felt the presence of a demon. She knew the feeling well, a creature from hell was trying to open a gateway. With a few arcane words, she helped open the gate and the imp Ahunab flutter through. The bat like creature flew over to a chair and perched on it, folding his wings to his back.

“I am here to make my report,” he said in a raspy voice.

Shalia nodded to him. “Very well,” she said. “Tell me what you know so I can banish you from my sight forever. I have no more desire to spend time with you, than you do with me.”

She stood there and listened to the little demon’s report…

The demon wrung his hands together as he began to speak, his voice sounding like the noise you would hear if you scraped a rock against a cheese grater. "You have to keep your end of the bargain, girl... This wasn't exactly easy to learn." The imp licked its pointed teeth nervously, staring around the room nervously as if it expected someone to be spying on them. "Seele... was once the God of Darkness. He did indeed spend a time in the Abyss... but he was no thrall. After losing his godhood the man went insane and tried to conquer hell itself. And he succeeded..." Ahunab chuckled softly, chaking his head in wonderment. "The kyton was his partner, from what I heard, but there was no doubt the mortal was in control. They worked together to subvert the flow of demonic energies. Seele should have become the next devil, but instead..." The imp clapped his hands together, shaking his head and flashing a grin of filed teeth at the tiefling. "They disappeared. The mere fact that he survived the entire ordeal is amazing... His takeover was not exactly peaceful. There are a lot of very angry demons who would love to know that Seele was still alive... He slaughtered scores of Abyssal creatures in his quest for power. Are you sure this man is the same one?"

The sorcerer stood on the roof of his tentative offices in Taras, staring upwards at the night sky. His plans were proceeding splendidly. The elf had not only claimed the slavery operations in Balefire after the death of the usurper Garth, but he had made contact with several prestigious men and women across the realm who felt their own enterprises would prosper from the inclusion of slavery. He had been more than willing to acquiesce to their demands. The slaving empire he had subverted would increase the sorcerer's coffers exponentially, just as he desired. Tendrils of corruption were spreading across the land, his greatest gift to Imythess since the loss of his godhood. Soon mortals in every isolated city and village would learn to fear his agents, even if they did not know the elf was the source of the malfeasance.

He had many pieces in play. In Taras, Alyx was proving to be a capable and efficient lieutenant, although Seele lost a slave a week to the man's violent hobbies. In Balefire, Ryuk was currently rooting out any traitors who still swore their loyalty to Garth, effectively bringing the entirety of those operations back under his control. Seele himself had met with shamans across the Debon Plains to put a deal into place that had provided a new source of enslaved workers for the elf. He had other agents afield in the realm as well, ruthless men whose allegiance had been secured with gold or terror. The sorcerer was still not sure which motivation was more effective, but he would learn soon.

Seele chuckled softly as he scanned the toppled skyline of Taras, his eyes gleaming with a malevolent golden glow. If everything went according to plan, the elf would be able to expand into Cascadia and Striberg within weeks, sowing seeds of shadiness in those metropolis' as well.

Shalia listened carefully to what the imp said. She had been right in suspecting Seele of keeping secrets from her, but she had not quite expected this. This made things much more interesting, for she was dealing with a former god. She knew how to handle demons and dragons, but gods were a different matter. At least it did not seem like he retained any of his godhood powers.

The tiefling nodded to the imp’s question. “I am quite sure this is the same man,” she said. “Your services are complete. As promised I shall call upon you no more.”
The imp cracked a smile, obviously glad he would never have to see her again. But the smile vanished as blue flames erupted from her hand and shot out at the imp. “You promised!!!” he yelled and the freezing cold flames engulfed his small body.

“I said I would call upon you no more,” she replied with a cruel smile. “I just did not say what that would entail. After all…I cannot call you to this world if you are dead.”

The imp let out a scream as his body froze before breaking a part into several fragments of ice. Black smoke rose from the heap of ice and the imp perished. Moments later even the ice turned into black flames as the creature’s body disappeared. She had never intended to let the imp live anyways, she had always hated him. Besides, after learning about who Seele was she did not want him returning to hell and blabbing to all the denizens about what he had found. A wanted slave and a wanted former god.

Without looking back she turned and left her room. The guards paid her no heed and she walked about the slaving complex. She found Seele looking over the city from a rooftop. Her lavender eyes bored into his back, a fire raging behind them. As of right now she did not know how this confrontation would end.

“You lied to me,” she said to him. “And I thought I told you upon our first meeting how I felt about people lying to me.”

Seele turned around at the tiefling's words, his face twisted into a mask of confusion and deference at first. However, when he saw her stance and the anger burning in her eyes the elf realized his deception had been unveiled. The expression of contrition melted away almost instantly, replaced by a cool, enigmatic smile. "Why, hello there Shalia. I am glad you joined me this evening." The elf lowered his head in a mocking bow, although he made sure to never allow the tiefling to leave his line of sight. He gestured to the sky above them, the stars glittering like diamonds in a blanket of obsidian. "The stars are beautiful, and I would hate for you to not witness their glory."

The sorcerer rose, his eyes glittering with sparks of magic as he began to speak at length. "You must understand, Shalia, that you put me in quite the delicate situation. You accosted me as if I were Chell herself, the epitome of all that is evil and wrong in Imythess! Did you expect me to stand there and admit that I was a slaver when you were so obviously antagonistic?" He chuckled and shook his head slightly. Although his voice betrayed no tension or nervousness, he kept his hands open with the fingers slightly curled, hovering above the hidden hilts of his enchanted fighting knives. "If you thought that was the case, I am insulted. I am far more intelligent than that."

Seele began to walk along the edge of the roof, his footsteps barely making a sound as he walked. "You put me in a position where I was forced to lie for my own safety... but no not pretend that I was the only one at fault. You lied to me as well, Shalia. You had no interest in my operations. You simply wished to kill whoever was in charge, and I am quite fond of my own life." The elf halted, around twenty feet of open rooftop separating the elf and the tiefling. Seele smiled wamly at her, his eyes glowing in the darkness and bathing their surroundings with a metallic light. "Tell, me Shalia, what is it that you despise so fiercely? Is it the practice of slavery, the strong owning the weak? Or is it me that you hate?" He shook his head in mock sadness, raising his thin fingers to wipe away an imaginary tear. "The very thought would drive me to despair, I assure you."

She had long figured out that Seele had been the one in charge. She had suspected it since the day she met the man. When he correctly guessed that she had joined on with the intention to kill him, she showed no change in her expression. She figured he had known her intent as long as she had known his. But she had found out far more than the mere fact that he was a slaver.

“You are quite wanted in hell,” she said. “Did you not think I would use my resources there to do a bit of research on you? An imp owed me a favor, and he a bit of poking around for me. You were once the God of Darkness and you lost your powers when the gods fell. You made a pact with a kyton, but you were never a slave. In fact it seems like *you * were the one in charge. I admit…I do find that rather impressive. Usually it is the demon that controls the one they form the pact with.”

She walked a half circle around him, keeping her distance from him. She kept her arms cross over her chest. Right now it was best not to pose too large of threat. After all, she still did not know if she wanted to kill him right now. There was much about him that interested and confused her. This whole slaving operation confused her. So many slaves, yet no magic controlled them. What kept them from revolting and swarming the entire complex like fire ants.

Her lavender eyes bored into Seele as she continued. “You conquered hell, albeit for a short period. Now that I think about…I do believe I remember hearing something about that commotion. Although I never did pay much attention to demon politics.” She turned to face him fully. “Then you suddenly vanished. That is all my information told me but the rest is easy enough to figure out. You came here, joined a slaving operation, and using any means possible you worked your way to the top. And here you are today.”

A sly smirk crossed her face. “And I would not say I lied per-say. I merely bent the truth in a manner that would best serve me. I am sure you can understand,” she said in an almost seductive voice. “I wonder…do you even realize how much you are wanted in hell? What would you do if they found out where you were?”

Seele's eyes took on a distant appearance, although his posture did not relax in the slightest. "Ah, the Abyss. Such a wonderful place. All that fire and howling, the constant stench of sulfur and brimstone... I had to throw away all of the clothes I wore while I was there, did you know that? A mortal's wardrobe is not well-suited for the demonic plane, I fear." He sighed and shook his head once more, fingers curling back to absentmindedly stroke the chains wrapped around his forearms. "I wasted years of my life down there, but it was not entirely fruitless. I learned more about demonic entities than any other mortal alive, I'm sure. True, I did leave a good deal of carnage in my wake, but demons are so difficult to trust. Killing them was much easier... And only slightly more difficult. They had become weak and bloated in hell, separated from the world of the living. I would like to think my journey added a bit of... spice to their lives."

Seele gestured with one hand flamboyantly, the sweeping motion taking in the city around them. His smile was still collected, although the glazed look had not faded from his expression. "Most of these cretins are barely aware of other planes of existence, Shalia. Did I expect them to learn about my deeds in the dark? No. Did I expect you to? Maybe..." His focus returned to the present, golden eyes staring directly into the tiefling's. "I must say, your knowledge of the Abyss was unexpected, although it did make the lies I weaved more substantial. My Kyton was not my master, but rather my servant... Although he died in the process. I can see the world so clearly again. But that likely does not interest you...

Seele held his hands out as if he were shrugging, his smile broadening. "Nor does my status in the Abyss interest me. If they want their revenge, they are free to follow me here and attempt to enact it. I will take great pleasure in destroying them. Demons are mortal, my dear... You just have to cut them into tiny enough pieces they can never recover." Every word oozed unctuously, dripping with malevolence. "What happens now, Shalia? Are you going to try and return me to your former masters? Drape me in chains and drag me to hell? If that is your goal, what's taking so long? Here I stand..." He beckoned at the woman, as if inviting her to truly lock him in fetters. "I see no need to explain myself if violence consumes your mind."

She listened as he explained himself. It was good that he was no longer trying to hold onto his lies. If he had…well his head would be rolling on the ground. A part of her did not know why she had not killed him yet. Something about him intrigued her and that fact made her extremely curious yet cautious of him. It was a rare thing to find something that caught her interest in such a way.

The tiefling thought she knew everything about slavery, having been a slave for so long. But the time she had spent working for the elf she realized how different slavery on the primes was. It confused her.

When he mentioned her bring him back to hell she scoffed. “I have little love for the hells,” she said. “I want to return there no more than you do. As weak as this realm is, it is better than having to deal with demons.”

Her eyes met his as she spoke on. “But I still owe you an answer to the questions you posed. No point in hiding it any longer. I admit, I have no love for slavery. I did not lie about me being involved with the slave trade in the hells…I just did not mention in what manner I was involved with.”

A part of her questioned how wise it was to tell him this, but what intrigued her about him made her speak on. She wanted to know how he would respond. There was still a good possibility she would kill him at the end, but that was still undecided.

“If you are intelligent as you say, I am sure you figured some of this out already,” she said. “I use to be a slave to a balor. I was trained as a war-slave and was forced to obey him through a collar upon my neck. When we came to this realm to look for new stock…the collar broke and I killed him. That is the danger of using such collars on a powerful slave…you better hope it never fails. I gained my freedom through blood, and I intend to keep it.”

She turned and walked to the edge of the roof looking down on the slaves working below. “Explain one thing to me. Why do they not revolt?” she asked. “They may be weak, but they outnumber us in a large amount. With no magical means to control them, if they rose up against us they would overwhelm us and gain their precious freedom. Even you and I would not be able to slay them all, eventually one of them would get lucky. So what keeps them from attacking?”

Seele only nodded when she mentioned she had been a slave in the demonic plan. He had not known that for a fact, but he had suspected she had some personal motive for abhorring slavery. Paragons always required a driving force for their heroics; there were few individuals in all of Imythess who would interfere in his slaving empire without such a cause. Usually, they had a sibling or relative, a friend or lover that had been caught in his snares and incarcerated. Far more dangerous were the selfless heroes who had once been slaves themselves. He had been forced to slay a handful of champions who were morally opposed to his business operations, and they had proven far more dangerous than those who simply wished to free their family members. The fact that Shalia had once belonged to a demon was a useful tidbit, and Seele filed it away, as well as her warning about the danger of utilizing slaving collars.

When she asked why the slaves did not attempt to overwhelm them he began to chuckle, the amusement eventually cascading into a chortle that seemed incongruous with his pale, menacing appearance. "Why do they not escape, my dear? When you confront me, that is the question you choose to ask?" He wiped away tears of mirth with one hand, still snickering under his breath. 'to be sure, fear is a part of it. They understand that I have no qualms about slaughtering them like livestock. When I first took over operations, two slaves attempted to escape; their blood still stains the workzone, a reminder to the others. But it is not fear that enthralls them, Shalia...."

The sorcerer looked down at the construction site, golden eyes shining with amusement. Slaves were still laboring under the light of the moon, working themselves to the point of exhaustion to hasten the completion of his fighting pits. "They do not revolt because they are weak, Shalia. Only a fool attempts to enslave the strong. Look at them; they are vermin, bugs beneath my feet. I could snuff out their life as easily as if they were a gnat, and they are incredibly aware of that fact." Seele shifted his gaze to stare at Shalia, smiling with the easy grace of a schoolteacher explaining a simple lesson.

"Your master must have been a fool, Shalia, to attempt and control you. You are incredibly skilled. Only idiots believe they can truly own someone who is as strong as themselves... or stronger." He pointed at the bustling workers, crawling around the construction area like bees around their hive. "As you say, they have only to reach out and take heir freedom. Yet they choose not to. That is what makes them truly weak. Why should I hesitate to enslave those who would not fight for their own freedom? You must not allow yourself to see them as equals. They are mere vermin, pests beneath your feet. Why should you fight for their sake, if they are not willing to make the same sacrifice?"

When Seele began to laugh she shot him a harsh glare. He seemed to find it quite humorous that she did not understand how humans could be controlled by fear. It disgusted her. The only reason she had been a slave for 300 years was because magic had controlled her. The instance she became free from its grip, she had taken that chance to completely gain her freedom by killing her master. These pitiful humans were control by nothing but the fear instilled in their hearts.

“I admit…I originally joined on with plans to kill you and everyone else in charge of this operation,” she said slowly. “But these pitiful humans are not worth my time. To so easily be rule by fear…they deserve their fate. Even if I were to set them free, they would only be captured again by some other slaver. They have the ability to obtain their freedom, why should I help those who will not help themselves.”

It was then she realized that he had actually changed her view on slavery slightly. She still did not like the whole practice, but she found it was the use of slave collars she despised so much. That is was the enslavement of one’s very will she hated. These humans where enslaved by Seele by physical means only, they had chosen to enslave their wills to him as well by letting themselves be ruled by fear.

“Consider yourself lucky,” she said. “I will not draw my blade against you, unless you provoke me. As I said, these scum you rule over are not worth me risking my life for their sake. But ever try to use slaving collars to rule the strong…then we may have words.”

Seele only smirked when she admitted that her original goal had been his own death. The tiefling would not be the first person to aim for the sorcerer's life, nor would she be the last. At least she was not currently attempting to rip his throat out. Seele was much more comfortable with assassins who could be reasoned with than the glorified murderers who attacked their target with single-minded ferocity. "Of course they deserve their fate, Shalia. The weak exist to labor so that the strong can devote their lives to meaningful prospects. Those strong enough to escape enslavement deserve their freedom." His eyes were friendly, but inwardly he was celebrating. Unless his ability to read the woman was completely wrong, the tieflling had truly folded beneath his reasoning. She would be a much more trustworthy ally now, although he would still watch his back around her. If her story was true, Shalia had managed to not only overpower a demonic slave collar, but slaughter her master as well. Such powerful pieces must be manipulated carefully in order to avoid angering them.

[colo=grey]"Oh, I do consider myself lucky, Shalia. Every waking moment."[/color] He looked away from the woman to once more stare up at the night sky, his face an emotionless mask. "I will attempt not to provoke you, although I make no promises. You will find my behavior much less submissive now that you are aware of my true identity. Of course, only one question remains.... Can you be trusted?" Although he did not look down from the heavens, there was a noticeable shift in his tone and bearing, as if he was a mere moment away from violence.

"I do not appreciate turncloaks, Shalia, and nor do I usually condone their presence in my operations. You have already admitted to gaineing entrance into my employment through the use of deception with assassination as your true goal. I must have a way of ensuring your loyalty if you are allowed to remain in this organization." The manner in which he stated the sentence suggested that there would be no acceptable middle ground for the elf. His cloak flapped loudly, although it was a still night, and it was obvious that the fabric's movements were due to an arcane source.

"I have knowledge of a ritual that would make betraying me physically painful to yourself... Though I doubt you would agree to be a part of such a spell. I will not cast it without your permission... Only if you find an acceptable manner in which to affirm your loyalty. I am not your former master, Shalia. I am aware of your strength." He finally returned his gaze to her form, although his eyes were narrowed and glowed with a magical light. "You are dangerous... and I cannot allow you to threaten my operations without some source of collateral."

Shalia watched the elf carefully as he spoke. There was a tension in the air than was almost palatable. Even though right now she did not intend this meeting to end in bloodshed, she knew that it could still end that way. Seele did not trust her, and she did not trust him. From this point on she had to choice her words wisely.

“We have a saying where I come from. ‘Trust is for the weak, and the dead.’ It is those who put their trust in other that leave their backs exposed only to find a knife put into it,” she said. “Neither of us are weak and I don’t imagine either of us plan on dying any time soon. If you want my word that I shall not bring you or your operation harm you have it. But I would not call that trust.”

Even though she truly believed that trust was a dangerous thing if given to the wrong person, she knew she needed to give Seele something. She highly doubt the two of them would ever truly trust each other. But perhaps there was a way to make him believe that she no long meant him any harm.

“I will not agree to any spell being put upon me,” she said. “And it is wise of you to not do it without my permission for that would be the fastest way to your grave. I spent over 300 years bound to a demon through the pain that collar gave me, I shall not be bound in such a way again. Although, my demon blood does allow me a different means for you to believe what I say is truthful. I am able to make pacts similar to a full blooded demon. This pact offers neither of us any shared power, but it would at least let you know if I lie to you. For I will not be able to tell a mistruth to one I form that bond with.”

This was her first time ever considering doing anything like this. But the elf intrigued her and she wanted to remain here at least for the time being. She knew she could not trust him, but at least he was not a fool like that half-dragon was. Also it was likely she could learn far more about this world from Seele than she ever could from Kaess.

Seele chuckled softly, although his amusement was obviously not directed at the tiefling. "The weak and the dead, eh? I am quite proud to say I do not fit either of those descriptions, and I never will." If the woman had acquiesced to his plan to submit to the curse he would have almost immediately considered her a weakness in his organization and started making plans to eliminate her. "However, I have made a pact with a demon once before. Even if you do not possess full demonic powers, I am not exactly willing to bind myself to another creature ever again. I believe there is a middle ground."

Seele reached into a pouch under his cloak, its contents clinking together as he slid his hand into the container. When he withdrew his hand it was a fist, thin fingers obviously wrapped around some small object. "In my years of study I have come across a useful spell that allows me to separate the soul from its mortal coil. I discovered that since it was my hand that initially removed the soul I always have a... sense of their location." He uncurled his hand to reveal a small faceted gem in the center of his palm. It was a completely flawless jewel that seemed to be carved from pure obsidian. Seele's eyes glowed for a moment, and the stone seemed to whisper.

"If you want to stay in my employ, you must promise me to keep this gem on your person at all points in time. It will not effect you in any way, except to allow me to sense your location. Of course, you might be asking youself how I will know if you keep this promise. I won't." Seele's smile was friendly, but with a clear undercurrent of malice. "However, if I ever discover that you are not carrying this jewel, I will consider it a sign of the termination of our contract. My next order of business would become your immediate elimination. Is that acceptable?"

She was not surprised when he refused her offer. Like herself he did not want to be bound to anyone again. She could respect those wishes. As he explained a compromise she raised a brow. The stone would let her gain his trust, yet keep from being bonded to him. Her only concern was what if he found out she was linked to the Burning Fist. She knew how Kaess would feel about this man, but she had no idea what Seele thought of the monestary.

Still even if he did find out, she likely could easily explain it away. After all it was not like she was loyal to the Burning Fists. She was merely using Kaess until she had gained the power she desired from him. After that she would see him no more. Weather he would be dead or alive was still to be determined.

"I agree to these terms," she said sternly as she held out her hand to accept the jewel. "As for you saying you would not longer be submissive. Good, that act of yours was starting to get on my nerves. Next time you want to act like a slave, I advise not displaying so much of your powers infront of the person you are trying to fool. No one with power like that is kept a slave unless through magical means, especially a spell caster."

When he handed her the jewel, she place it in her pocket. Later she would find a more secure means of keeping the item on her.

"One more warning," she said. "Do not think I will blindly follow just because you give me a paycheck. If you think you can just order me around like I am one of your guard dogs, you will be sorely mistaken."

Seele bowed with a smile as she accepted the soul gem. "Alas, Shalia, I had to make the most of my spellcasting abilities. It would not do for me to act like a slave... and get slaughtered as if I was one. My magic is, above all else, designed to help me survive. I will keep that advice in mind for the future, however." He straightened, raising one hand and staring at his pale, skeletal fingers. Dark bolts of magic coursed around the digits, a tiny display of negative energy. For the first time since the confrontation began he did not even seem to be aware of the tiefling's presence, simply staring at the dancing power.

"Very well, Shalia. I will allow you some freedoms that none of my other agents employ. However, let me give you some advice as well... Do not betray me." He looked up at her as the crackling energy began to spread from his fingers, coursing down his arm to the elbow. Black sparks also began to emanate from his eyes, giving his face a contorted, demonic appearance. "If you do, the punishment I reigned upon the Abyss will be nothing compared to what I do to you. You might be strong... But that does not make you invincible. Your strength is also your weakness...

And I would use it to destroy every trace of your presence. Every person you have ever met will be killed. Every life you have ever touched will be eliminated."
by this time the negative energy had covered his entire frame, making him a shifting form of black and gray sparks. Without warning the shadows from the rooftop surged to life, wrapping themselves around the elf. In an instant he was transformed into a blurry patch of darkness. He would almost be invisible except for the outline of his frame against the starry sky. "It is a sign of respect that I would treat you in such a way, truly. Few mortals have ever deserved to be scourged from the face of Imythess... but you would not be the first. Remember that before you consider making me your enemy once more."

There was a barely audible sound of movement as he jumped off of the roof, plunging into the darkness of the street below. Perhaps the threat would keep Shalia loyal to him for longer; perhaps it would only hasten her inevitable betrayal. Seele did not care; she needed to know what she was getting into. If she held any qualms, it would be better to eliminate her quickly. He strode off into the night, wrappied in darkness and grinning widely. Everything was going according to plan...
