Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

The day hadn't truly begun, the sun had yet to peek over the horizon. The roads that ran between the half constructed buildings were filled with shadows, the torches that provided light were few and far between. A slight wind blew down the streets, stirring up whatever dust hadn't been packed down by the passage of many feet. Glancing around, Bryhn searched for a good spot to begin his work. Because of the early hour, not many people were allowed in the streets. Luckily, money opened many doors. Besides, like he had told the guard he had paid, it wasn't like they were doing anything wrong. He was simply paying for the right to be one of the first in the city that day. If you were one of the first in the city, you would be able to pick out better ground for whatever kind of building you were going to make. This logical argument had been more than enough to convince the guards to accept some money and let him in. The only thing dampening his mood, was their insistence he have an armed guard go with him. Even his money hadn't been enough to change their minds. They were willing to bend the rules slightly and let him into the city, but sending him off alone felt too much like murder to them.

The slight jingle of the guard's chain mail intruded on Bryhn's thoughts as he walked down the streets. For a while he had been able to ignore the consistent noise, but now that he had acknowledged it, the jingle seemed to drown out his thoughts. Glancing behind him, he hoped he found what he was looking for soon so that he could finally be rid of this man. Scanning the street again, Bryhn saw exactly what he was looking for. It was the perfect spot of land to build a location for fire mages to come study together. In reality though, he would be using it to take their knowledge and add it to his own. He had just come to this place after spending several weeks studying some books of magic that he had acquired.

"This looks like the perfect spot", he said, gesturing to a plot of land that already had the beginnings of a building on it. His guard looked at the land, scratching his head slightly. "But sir, that land is already taken." The guard's statement brought a smile to Bryhn's face. It might have part of a building on it already, but he could take care of that easily enough. Turning to glance at the guard, he gestured and invoked one of the new spells that he had learned. With a loud roar, the guard's poorly fitting helmet exploded, burning the guard from the shoulders up, rendering him unconscious and with wounds that would kill him if he didn't receive attention. Pleased with the results of the spell, Bryhn turned to look at the building that was occupying the plot of land he wanted. Making a slightly different gesture, Bryhn focused his magic through the staff that he carried, feeling the strength of the spell. The half built wall of the building burst into intense flames, a wave a heat dispelling the chill of the night. With an ecstatic grin on his face, he watched the building burn in front of him, already envisioning the building that he would erect on that spot.

The morning shift was about to start and few people were awake in the refurbished sector of Taras. None but the city guard and those who were last to slink home from a night full of debauchery, mixed expressions of shame, victory, and impairment on their faces. Indo sat inside the guard tower finishing a cup of tea in the hope that it would give him a much-needed energy boost. He was groggy from staying out too late on the boardwalk the night before and needed all the help he could get keeping his eyes open, but it was worth the pile of silvers he had won at the roulette tables. A drowsy smile crept onto his lips as he mulled over the positive side effects of his vice.

His thoughts were interrupted when a young recruit burst through the doors in a panic.

"Fire, fire!"

Indo groaned. His precious rebuilt city was already besmirched with the black tongue of flame and ash.

"Augh, which sector?" Indo asked.

"Eleven, sir! I was finishing night watch in that sector and didn't know what to do, please help!" The recruit's panic wasn't very becoming of him, but that was to be expected of the young ones who hadn't received all their training yet.

"I'll relieve you, soldier. Send word to the fire brigade to grab the pales then send word for any mages from the palace that might be able to help." Indo traded his cup of tea for the spear he had left in the weapon rack by the entrance, energized by the call to action. He was off to sector eleven, it seemed.

The first to arrive on site, as usual, Indo slowed his run down to a brisk walk as he canvassed the area for any sign of a well pump. As he searched, he wondered how this building had caught fire in the first place; it was only partially constructed and didn't appear to have any flammables nearby. The answer to his question laid in wait around the corner. A colleague laid upon the ground, incapacitated from having clearly been stricken in the face by something flammable. His helmet had split into pieces, but his face was too disfigured with burns for him to tell who it was.

Just beyond the supine guardsman stood a young boy, watching the flames with an unnervingly content expression upon his face.

"You there!" he shouted at the boy, "Step away from the guard and put your staff on the ground!"

He had already learned to thoroughly distrust mages the hard way.

The fire burned merrily as it slowly spread along the structure. Bryhn watched it carefully to make sure it didn't start to spread to any surrounding buildings. He didn't think that that would be a problem, there was a large enough gap between structures that the fire wouldn't be able to jump across unless it had some help. While he was planning his next move, his thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of another person. From how he was dressed, he was obviously another city guard. What a bother, and I doubt that this man is going to be reasonable. Still, it was worth a try. Just as he was about to greet the guard and bid him a good day, the man yelled out at him. He was very accusatory and obviously didn't understand the situation exactly. Smiling slightly at the guard, Bryhn called back, eager to end the misunderstanding.

"There is nothing to worry about sir, I will make sure that the fire does not spread to any of the other buildings." Glancing down at the guard who was on the ground, the smile slipped from his face. As he studied what had happened to the man and his helmet, Bryhn spoke out loud, mostly to himself but also so that the other guard would understand. "Sometimes it is very difficult to know what will happen when a spell is cast. All a mage has to go on sometimes is a vague description of the spell followed by the actual incantation. And there is never enough time to test the spells in a controlled environment where they can be properly documented. For instance, I had never cast that spell on a metal object the size of that man's helmet. I will have to remember what happened and write it down as soon as possible. I will also have to remember to thank the man's officer and inform him of what a help the man was."
Returning his gaze to the new guard, he blinked as if he had just noticed him. "I just realized that I don't even know the man's name. I don't suppose you could help me find out."

The flickering light from the fire caught his eye. It was growing faster than he wanted it to. If it continued unchecked, it could become dangerous. With a small sigh, Bryhn began casting again. His fingers flickered as they made the appropriate signs to summon an elemental. It was a fairly extensive spell, as the requirements were very precise. If you just summoned any old fire elemental, you could end up with a stronger being than you could control. When that happened, the mage who had done the summoning usually died. Finishing the spell, the fire elemental winked into existence. Asserting his will over it, Bryhn gave it it's orders. "Watch over this fire and keep it from going out of control. The only structure that should burn down is this one." With the orders given, he turned his back on the creature. It would do as he had said, it had no other choice. He turned his full attention to the guard who had arrived. If worse came to worse, he needed to keep his distance so that he had time to get his spells off.

Indo stared suspiciously, spear still pointed at the boy as he calmly explained the fire. It was almost believable at first; the boy was very good at covering his tracks but his lack of concern for the injured guard gave away his confusing near admittance of having attacked the man intentionally.

It was that same calculated quick-talk that made Indo choose his actions carefully; he was clearly dealing with another fire-loving sociopath. "There have been no burn permits issued for this site. Again, put the staff down and step away from it. More guardsmen will be here soon, and they will not hesitate to put an arrow in your chest when they see us in a standoff like this."

Even as he spoke, the young man paid little attention. With another series of gestures he conjured forth a creature of flames. Indo adjusted his grip on the spear in his hands, ready to throw it at the child's heart if it became necessary, then took a step toward the unconscious man on the ground without taking an eye off of the mage. There was nothing he could do for him like this other than to place himself between the man and further harm.

Kinda short, but there's not much else to do before we end up brawling. XD

Bryhn frowned upon hearing the guard's tone. It seemed that this man was not going to be reasonable. What a pity, he had hoped to finish his work here with minimal notice; however, it seemed that this man was not going to let him leave quietly. Casting a final glance at the burning building, he was pleased with his elemental's work. The building was burning steadily, but it was under control. Soon it would be gone and he could start creating his own location, a place designed for the study of fire magic. Blinking owlishly, Bryhn just realized something. "How bothersome, I'm going to need to hire an extremely skilled water mage. That will be an added expense I hadn't thought of. Only a master will be able to sufficiently ward the new building to prevent it from burning down in the first day." Shaking his head, Bryhn made a mental note to look up some of the more notable masters in the area. He would not be surprised if he ended up paying more for the mage wards than he did on the rest of the building. Oh well, it was a necessary expense.

Turning his full attention to the guard, Bryhn smiled at him. "Very well, I will do as you asked. I'm putting my staff down." Crouching down, he gently placed the staff on the ground in front of him. Placing it so that it was perpendicular to the direction he was facing, Bryhn picked up a small rock that was nearby. Standing up once again, he hefted the rock slightly. It was not large, closer to a pebble than a rock, nothing that the guard should fear. Still, that was the beauty of magic. You took someone presumptions, and turned them inside out. With a sideways throw, he tossed the rock into the air above the guard. Shifting his feet so that his right foot was touching the staff on the ground, once again his fingers flew. It was a short incantation, made all the more swift by the necessity of getting it off before the guard could throw his spear. Just as he finished the spell, Bryhn lowered his eyes slightly. With a loud popping noise, and a flash that lit up the area, the rock exploded, showering the roadway with burning debris. The spell would not deal much damage to anyone it hit, but it would cause most people to flinch. This would give Bryhn more time to get his next spell off. A fight for a mage was always a race to the next spell. You had to alternate your large damage spells with spells designed to give you time to act. Now that the fight had started, it was time for the serious casting to begin.

The boy was quite perplexing. He seemed to utterly lack a conscience, or perhaps truly believed himself to be innocent. Maybe both. His responses and mutterings sounded rather scholastic in nature, leaving Indo to drift back and forth between belief and mistrust. Fortunately for him, his job had taught him never to drop his guard.

He watched expectantly as the mage agreed to lower his staff, but still never saw the attack coming. He shouted out in surprise as an explosion lit the sky then rained fire down upon him. His first instinct was to drop to one knee in order to shield himself and the fallen guard next to whom he stood; the man could not handle much more damage than he'd already endured. Heart pounding in his ears, it only took Indo a millisecond to consider his options; there was only one.

He knew nothing about magic or how to defend himself from it, leaving only the route of brute force. He sprang up from his kneeling position and charged at the boy, shield in front of him like a battering ram. He had the advantage of weight and experience on his side, judging by the look of the boy's size and age. From what he knew of mages, they weren't the most physical types. He only hoped he could tackle him before the situation became more dangerous.
