There were few days where Soko Nephi was not incredibly joyful. There was always something to cheer her up, whether it was new people, new flora, new fauna, or new landscapes. In Cascadia she had found much of all four. The sun sat midway in the east, slipping between a few tall buildings of the floating city. Sun shafts hurtled out all around her, rainbows arced between myriad waterfalls. For a moment she thought of what could have been done with the money required to maintain this airborne city, but crushed the thoughts. She took a few steps forward and out of the treeline, towards a few of the little structures sitting on the ground. Soko bounded down the gentle slopes to them, her amulets, teeth and fangs clattering into one another. The structures had been for magical transport, Soko found. Now standing on the edge of the city, she leaned over the edge entirely. Her eyes wandered along marble construction of a rainbow of dark colors, past old windows spewing water, into empty space filled with a few wispy clouds, and to the ground far below. To a girl with wings it was not a worrying sight, but to someone else she imagined it was terrifying. Winter stood straight once more and wandered into the crowded streets. This was her first time in a proper city - she had been introduced to the refugee camps of Taras - and it had her clinging onto her valuables. A few guards in bright cloaks and chainmail, with fattening guts, had taken her spear for fear of her stabbing someone with it. She had tried to explain otherwise, but they explained her claws were probably more than enough of a weapon. She wandered through the streets, dodging around garishly dressed men and women. The streets slowly crowded further, between stands cluttering the places closest to buildings and throngs of people shifting between them. Soko slipped into an empty side street, splashing her way through a few puddles. She wondered why no one was using such a perfectly good street, thick with shade. As she walked farther she noted the sound of people behind her, and was mildly glad that someone else had the presence of mind to avoid the common paths. A hand clasped down on her bare shoulder. She turned slowly, adjusting her big yellow eyes to stare at a set of rough looking men. They had warned her cities were rough places back at the village. One of them held a hand out. "You know what we want, horns." The man growled. Winter felt for her little half-full coin purse and prepared to hand it over. |

Vyse relaxed, Cascadia was the source of his father's black market schemes, but he had no idea where to begin. Wandering the streets, feeling the energy and flow of the city, it was intoxicating... that's when he heard an odd murmur to the side. He turned his head seeing several thugs surrounding a young woman. 'Blasted thugs... picking on such a defenseless woman!' his rage filled him as he walked towards them. His hands drawing his cutlass and longsword, he would visit a very painful non-lethal experience upon them. Taking a quick step forward he clubs the first man with the basket hilt of his cutlass, stabbing another in the rump with his longsword, deep enough that it'd scar and impair his movement, not to mention cause all sorts of pain. Twisting to the side, spinning and bringing his cutlass down, the tip barely slicing through the wrist, these men were to slow to keep with him. Letting out a short bestial growl he stares them down, his voice becomes sharp and angry, "I have given one of your men a nap, the other will have a hard time walking or sitting for days, and I just cut the tendons in your right hand, I suggest you run before I get deadly..." His eyes were hard, he would leap on these men and slaughter them all in a second if they didn't run, if they knew his reputation it would be better... 'Might as well' he thought, "I am Vyse Noclan, Bandit Hunter and Slaughterer of Smugglers, fighting me is death." He smirked as he waited for the thugs to react. |

Thousand Night Winter stepped back as the man seemingly effortlessly slice the bandits to pieces. She looked more than a little nervous at this newcomer, and allowed the men to stream past her as they scurried away. She stepped back cautiously, trying to hide the flickers of fear on her face. "I don't think you needed to stab them." She squeaked, eyes on his blades. Thousand Night Winter had experienced a few righteous folk who jumped straight to inflicting pain so quickly, and generally they turned a blade towards her. It was unfortunate having horns. Her hands stayed close to the hem of her knee length skirt, her eyes locked onto the man. "They were just thieves, your shiny blades could have warded them off with little trouble." Soko continued. She checked over her shoulder for the lay of the alleys behind her. If she needed to escape, she might need to do more than just fly out. "So I'll kindly ask that you put those weapons away before you do anything hasty! I doubt the guards would like it if you dealt more vigilante justice. Plus, if you kill them, they can't redeem themselves! People are evil for a reason, not to simply be evil, you know," Soko finished. She hoped her little plea would save the fleeing muggers and possibly herself from a date with those vicious little blades. Ever an optimist she locked eyes with the man, hoping he'd detect her friendly intentions and not press farther. |

Vyse barely noticed the fear, his face changed to a gentle smile, "I will not kill them, but I believe a firmer hand is needed sometimes, one man will walk with a slight limp, not enough to impede his movement, but enough to make his feet fall flat to make plenty of noise, another will never be able to fully close his hand into a fist, making it impossible to wield a sword, and the one I conked on the head... well he'll just have a splitting headache for a while." He flicked the tiny bit of blood onto the ground as he sheathed his blades. "I just can't stand watching women be treated that way," he scratched his head, he really didn't want to frighten her. "I'm sorry if I spooked you, but you should know, that cute and weak looking girls are a favorite target of thieves. Now, I should probably introduce myself, I'm Vyse Noclan, a man of no clan or title. Whats your name miss, and why did you choose to walk down a deserted street." He was really curious... though he knew she was probably a foreigner like himself, but she was a sight to see. "One more thing, I need to know, what kind of being are you, you're... well, sorry if I seem a bit... tactless but you're really beautiful... well now that's kinda embarrassing for me to say not that I think about it and I'm rambling aren't I?" He really wished Umbriel was with him, she could have been a nice topic to talk about, but alas, they don't let Dire Tigers run around the city. |

His change to a smile eased her tensions a little as he explained his methods. They still bothered Soko, and she raised her hands, pressing them together just below her chin. "You really need to be careful with swordwork like that! You've got solid technique, but you might do some serious damage without more skill. Don't want to cut a man's tendon when you were just aiming for a slap with the flat on his rump!" Thousand Night Winter explained. He explained how he didn't like it when women were treated that way, and mentioned how cute she was. Almost automatically Soko drew out her pipe, packed it with tobacco and lit it. She kept the pipe a little higher than normal, blowing out small puffs of flavored smoke. "Hrm, I feel bad if you prioritize critters with child-bearing hips. You should save people because they need to be saved, right? Not because they've got lips you'd be comfortable kissing. You just introduced yourself with a title, I think it was Vyse Noclan! Bandit Hunter and Slaughterer of Smugglers! If that's the case, I'm Thousand Night Winter, shaman of the Katul. My given name is Soko Nephi, which you can call me by since I'm not being a shaman right now. I walked down this street because it looked empty, the clothes here are unpleasantly colorful and the crowds of people are a little much for me." Soko said with a few small giggles. Vyse complimented her. She dropped her pipe a little, letting it go slack and drop to the level of her chin. A slight blush touched her chocolate cheeks and she cocked her head to the side. "Beautiful? Never been called that before." Soko commented. She tried to hide her joy by removing her pipe from her lips and blowing out a ring of smoke. Her other hand traveled from her waist to her hip, as though checking to see if there actually was a curve there. "Don't worry about your rambling! I ramble all the time. I'm a demon, though, thanks for asking. The horns give me away." Soko answered. She poked one of the white structures jutting out from her head with a slight smile. She was confident he wouldn't try to kill her at this point. "If you know anything about this city, I'd like it if you showed me around. I've only managed to get this far from one of the magick-y transportation things." Thousand Night Winter asked. She smiled more warmly than before. Soko hoped he'd help her a little, then she could get on with her mission when she got her bearings. |

"Oh, yeah sure, I've been to Cascadia plenty of times, its like a second home to me now," he decided to show her first to the stables, he had a friend there and he missed Umbriel. "Just follow me I'll give ya a quick tour," He felt a bit happier, she was a very kind person, "Just so ya know, I don't prioritize who I save, it just irks me more when women are being treated that way." He slowly lead her through the city, showing her the sights, inns, taverns, shops. At each place he explained who the owners were, how good the service is, who was more likely to try to steal your coin purse. He lead her around until they got to the stable. "Sorry, but I need to stop by the stables quick, my friend, Umbriel, gets mopey when I'm not around." He half hoped she would come and meet Umbriel and half hoped she didn't since most people can't handle Dire Tiger. He waved and called out to the woman in charge of the stable, who in turn looked around the area, it was fairly deserted. She flipped the handle on a bar, letting loose 1000 pounds of pouncing muscle. The Dire Tiger took a short run before tackling Vyse, pinning him to the ground and licking his face. "Come on Umbriel we have guests, come on girl, get off," He struggled to stop the tiger from licking his face raw, once he stopped her she immediately glances at Soko, purring softly she sits down, staring at her. "This is my friend, Umbriel, she's a... well... Dire Tiger." He smiles as he stands up, petting Umbriel's side. "She's just a big softy, acts more like a happy house cat then a wild animal, you can pet her if you like," he knew Umbriel wouldn't mind, but even he knew Umbriel was still kinda dangerous, he was lucky his ribs were broken from being pounced on, maybe for once luck was on his side and no murderers or assassins would come out of the woodwork after him. |

Soko followed behind him, and nodded to his statement of intent. They wandered the city and Winter memorized the sites and sights. He was helpful, especially to a naive foreign girl. He walked into the stables, and Soko decided to follow him. She'd been mildly charmed by all the horses she'd seen, she remembered. She took her time picking her way through the stable. The Uneven floor and her slim soled leather sandals did not mix very well. She paused for a moment and checked the ties all the way up her calf before continuing. The demon girl glanced back up, just in time to see an orange blur tackle Vyse. A large predator, the sort of animal that would sometimes choose to attack her tribe. The girl immediately began to conjure, keeping her hand behind her back and murmuring the incantation barely above her breath. She blinked a few times before he spoke, and quietly dispelled a frozen orb she had conjured in the hand hidden behind her back. "Umbriel is a very large cat." Winter managed to say, still slightly shocked. She knelt down beside the animal and stroked her massive shoulders, felt the luxurious fur running between her fingers and ran a finger gently along the massive spine of the tigress. It was nice to see such a creature up close and alive. "Your fighting companion as well, I'd imagine. I doubt many would keep a creature this large or powerful otherwise." Soko inquired. The paws alone were massive, and the retracted claws probably reached a terrifying length. She leaned in closer and whispered towards the big cat's ear, knowing she didn't need to get too close as Umbriel probably had very sharp hearing. "You are such a brave kitty! Big and strong aren't you?" The demoness said in an odd, higher pitched voice. She suddenly straightened up and removed her necklace. "The tooth is from a big cat like Umbriel, I don't think she'd appreciate me wearing bits of a cousin's corpse." Soko commented. She didn't mention the rather large array of claws and teeth from similar predators adorning her bracelets and sandals. There simply wasn't enough room to hide all of them on her person! "What now? I'm sure there's more of the city to see or was there a reason you brought me to see your friend?" Winter asked. She planned to spend the day cultivating a new friend, she had precious few on the mainland. Edited by Alexandra, Tue May 31, 2011 7:13 pm.

"I just needed to see Umbriel, she gets depressed if I'm gone for to long without a visit." He ushered the tigress back into her pen, stroking her head before turning around to Soko. "I'll show you around some more now, though I think the only other place worth visiting in this part of the city would be the market, plenty of stalls full interesting trinkets, plus its one of my stomping grounds," All he could do was smile, he loved the market, stalls, food, trinkets, weapons, even some little things for Umbriel were usually bought there. As he walked out he looked around, making sure no one was following him, he still had to make sure no one wall following him. 'Good, no one' was all he could think as he lead his new friend to the stalls a few streets over. He should her through the stalls, introducing her to some of his friends that ran the stalls. "Alright, which stall would you like to look through?" He didn't want to solely dominate this trip, he felt Soko should decide which stalls to go to. "Most of the people here will give you a good deal if you want to buy anything, they're not like some stall owners and jack up the prices for foreigners." He himself gave a quick look around, mentally noting which stalls to ignore because of their outrageous prices. |

Vyse lead her to the market, a sprawling open space. Hundreds of brightly colored stall tents sat jammed up next to each other, huddled within and around colonnades supporting roofs for shade. Crowds mobbed the shadey structures, lounging on benches in deep discussion or simply watching the masses move about. It was a curious place, with street vendors cooking simple meals and merchants hawking wares that ranged from authentic to cheap imitations. Vyse suggested she pick a place, and she spotted the one she wanted immediately. She scurried over to a small stand, a merchant selling Kellen tobacco and accessories. She restocked her small supply of her second favorite vice and took a moment to glance at an all too expensive ivory and ebony pipe. She spun it gently on the tips of her claws, looking at the little pictures of horses and . She returned the object to the seller and made sure her tobacco was secure in her little pouch. She glanced about some more and hurried to a representative from Istan, selling the light and cool clothes common to the region. A dress and a few outfits disappeared into her now bulging satchel, and she turned towards Vyse. "Err. Anywhere you wanted to go? I've already spent more than enough Lomedor silver here. If you don't have anything you want to do, we could go drinking?" Winter suggested. Alcohol was her favorite vice, but she imagined he had something in mind. Few started drinking as early as she did. |

Vyse smirked, he never went out drinking seriously, but he had just gotten some coin and he felt like spending time with his new friend, "Yeah, sure, I know a small place just around the corner, its a pretty old place, but its got the best drinks in the area, at least in my opinion." Taking the lead again Vyse takes her to a small tavern. Its practically empty besides one or two people drinking in the corners. Smiling, Vyse led Soko to the bar. The place is relatively dark for the time of day, the barkeeper is an old man with short grey hair. The place itself though was old and worn down, not a single chair or table looked younger then 20 years old. "Hey, Brenk, this is my friend Soko Nephi, Soko this is Brenk Milt, I stopped a few thugs from breaking his arms." He looked at the old man and gave him a small smirk. Brenk smiled widely, as he saw his young friend, "Vyse you young dog you, coming in a bit early for a drink eh? Well that's good, shows you're loosening up a bit, also, good news I finally completed that drink I told ya about, Black Water Ale. Took the brewing materials from dwarves and used a combination of human and elven brewing, all topped off with a special ingredient I have... and this baby will get ya drunk faster then most stuff and its a fine dandy drink." Vyse couldn't help but laugh, this crazy old man made all of his brews himself, best barkeeper and brewer in the town, "I'll take a mug of the Black Water then, what about you Soko, feel like trying the odd brew?" He doubted Soko would try it, he remembered what the first test looked like when he was here last time, it was black as night and a lot more bitter then most herbs. |

Soko found herself within a lovely tavern in no time, checking over her new clothes in the flickering light of lanterns and shafts of sunlight entering through narrow, crooked windows. Doubly pleased with her purchases, she put them all back. Her mind idly hoped that this tavern was more than just the local haunt, as watered down ale didn't quite cut it for her. The barkeeper approached, and Vyse handled introductions. Soko kept quiet, as she would let the alcohol do the talking if allowed. She also tagged Vyse as somewhat of a lightweight, he didn't have the look or demeanor of a man who found his way to the bottom of bottles, at least not as frequently as herself. "I'll take the Black Water. Sounds interesting." Soko stated. He passed her a mug, a good half-pint. She leaned back in her chair, the old favorite creaking beneath her slightly. She tipped the mug back to look down into it. It certainly looked black, so she took a moment to hope it wasn't water. It was thick with the scent of alcohol and a few things she couldn't place, probably the exotic ingredients he spoke of. With a shrug, Soko tipped the mug into her mouth for a quick swig. It was delightfully cool, and went down smooth as silk. The alcohol taste was a little acrid, but it was delightfully bitter and complex, a dozen little flavors dancing across her tongue. The aftertaste was also surprisingly pleasant. "Smooth, complex bitter flavor, and a good amount of alcohol. Lovely. I think I'll be having another." Soko said. She smiled and took a few more sips, eventually finishing the mug but allowing herself to enjoy it. Too often she saw people drink alcohol without enjoying the nuances of the flavors, focusing on inebriation before enjoyment. That wasn't to say Winter had never been drunk, she had learned all those lessons a long time ago. Soko slapped down a few coppers and rested a hand on her flat stomach. Brenk swiped the coins from the bar as soon as her claws were free of them, and he handed the waiting hand a second mug. With the same pace and caution she finished the second drink, smiling the whole while. She reflected on her condition and realized just how strong the stuff was. "You should be careful, city boy. Your brilliant barkeep has a real brew here, and it'll have you vomiting down a waterfall in no time." Soko predicted with a cheeky grin. She planted a few more coppers on the counter and started on her third mug. |

Vyse smirked, this little lady could hold her own drink, "Oh, I'm no city boy Soko, I was born and raised in a small porting town a good ways north of here. I was raised on alcohol from all over the world, I'm pretty sure I can at least keep pace with ya." Putting down the money for the same amount that Soko had ordered, he drank the first one he already had been given slowly as he got his others, just as the next one hit the bar, he had finished and started on the new one. After he quickly caught up to Soko he could feel his senses leave him a bit, "Yer right, this stuff is pretty strong, I think it just made me feel a wee bit wobbly, but its nothing compared to some nights, right Brenk?" Vyse smiled, he knew he was starting to get drunk, but it wasn't as bad as some days when he was haunted by the fact that his master killed her mother, and in return he killed his master. Putting down more coins another drink came out, he drank it slowly. "Yeah, some days this little swordsman comes into my bar and drinks himself into near oblivion, sometimes I fear his body will fail him with all the fightin' he does, but at least its not as bad as it once was, eh young friend?" Brenk smirked as he passed out another drink as Vyse put down more coin. "Aye, it used to be a lot worse Brenk, but I'm a wee bit better now," He could really start feeling his thoughts turn to mud, it was an odd and familiar feeling, it was the opposite of his Bloodwrath it made him warm and happy not angry and sad. Maybe Soko could keep up with him, he would like to have another drinking buddy besides Brenk, nobody could beat Brenk and his clockwork liver. |

Vyse was already getting a little drunk. Soko wanted to giggle a little bit, but that'd be cruel. She was a life long heavy drinker, alongside being non-human. Winter finished her third mug and went for a fourth, her eyes on Vyse. "You should probably stop, friend. Matching me drink for drink is not a pleasant path." Soko warned in as polite a voice as possible. She didn't want to raise his ire, or he would go for the fourth drink. She already planned for this to be her final glass, as she was on the edge of falling from a pleasant buzz into the terrible lack of self control proper drunkenness brought. Soko knew she was an angry drunk, an angry drunk who could still cast spells. She finished the last mug and with a satisfied smile she planted it on the bar and leaned back in her tall chair. Legs stretched and heels gently on the bar she watched Vyse finish his drinks. "Okay, now that you've gotten drunk, I've got to make sure you get home. Where are you staying?" Thousand Night Winter inquired. She hoped it was somewhere he had shown her. |

Vyse smirked, "The Broken Strings... its a good place, good deals on rooms... but I think I should stay here a bit and sober up a wee bit, Brenk, could you get me some water?" Brenk nodded and walked off. "Anymore and I'll become a sobbing pool of gloom, he could already feel his thoughts wander off to the bodies he left in his wake. "I saw my own mother die ya know, same with my master, he taught me all about the sword and showed me what my parents really where... murderers, thieves, people who would do anything for a gold coin." He felt the familiar sadness of that night, his hand twitched, sometimes it did that and he could feel all of blood he's spilled cover his hand. "I get a bit talkative when I'm drunk to... heh... ya know, when I found Umbriel she was a wild and angry tigress... mother of four healthy cubs. Turns out their fur is worth a lot of money and my father, well he wanted it, used his connections to track them down, and I used my own to find out what he was doin'." He remembered that day all to well, "I found the poachers he hired, they had skinned the four cubs... and caged and wounded Umbriel, I flew into such a rage... my bloodwrath went wild, all I could see was red. There we seven men, all skilled hunters and fighters, they lasted no more then five minutes against me... I healed Umbriel and opened her cage. I buried her cubs where they lay, fur and all." Brenk walked back, putting down a tall mug of water, Vyse drank it slowly before continuing his story, "I guess she knew what I was doin'... but I think for a short while she hated me, we hunted down all kinds of poachers in the area as two wild animals, consumed by rage... when we calmed down, I think we kinda bonded in our altered states, she treated me like I was her master... she's pretty smart for a big cat." Vyse could barely keep the slurring out of his voice, overwhelming sadness coupled with being a little drunk made him want to obliterate the thoughts with even more alcohol. "Sorry if I made things awkward... I guess I underestimated the Black Water." He smiled, he had shown a disgraceful side of himself, he knew it, but his already loose lips just become looser with alcohol... oh well, he would try to salvage the situation in a bit, maybe some music at the Broken Strings would help. |

Soko nodded as she remembered where the inn was. Vyse decided he needed to stay and sober up for a moment, which was an admirable goal if it worked. Vyse began talking, a long and sad story of his upbringing. She didn't bother mentioning her own childhood, even though it seemed like a perfectly good time to share it. It wasn't important. She placed a hand on Vyse's back. "You turn into a wreck when you get drunk, don't you. It doesn't sound like you had a good time growing up, either." Soko said. She tipped her chair forward and stood. With a few steps she ascertained she had total control of herself, and lifted Vyse from his chair. "Let's get you back to the Broken Strings." Soko suggested. She drew him back across town, through streets intermittently lighted by the dimming sun. The amount of people on the streets did nt bother her nearly as much, nor did their awful clothing. After a good walk they were within the Broken Strings. It was in good repair, beyond the normal uneven floors and creaky construction. The smell of meat pervaded the space, and attractive young waitresses and waiters moved between tables, talking with the patrons. It had a homely feel, and Soko sat Vyse down before seating herself across from him on one of the smallish tables. A young lady with long black hair took a place on a circular stage, well lit by surrounding lanterns. Her garb was surprising, a scandalously cut blue dress with slim shoulders. It seemingly threatened to come off at any moment as the girl swayed and toyed with the straps. A small group of musicians behind her began to play. The girl sang, a fast folksy tune that Soko had not expected on Cascadia. It was rather good, and soon the demon girl was tapping her foot to the furious beat. "I can see why you come here." Soko giggled, her eyes on the girl's nearly nonexistent clothing. The demon pulled out her pipe and lit it, filling it with the last of her old tobacco from Lomedor. A waiter approached, a pretty young who had a few splashes of paint on his fingertips. He was delicately built with curly blonde hair, a warm smile on his lips. Soko smiled and ordered. "We'll have a nice meat pie." Winter said. The waiter nodded and strode off. "I guess it is true, plenty of people here do artsy things. Our waiter had paint on his fingertips, the singer isn't a slouch, the musicians can't help but play perfectly. Your brewer friend made his own hard liquor, and I bet the cook here is fantastic. If it wasn't for the clothing, I'd seriously consider spending more time here." Soko mused. Even the waiters had the same manner of garish dress, bright purples and blues. Or at least Winter thought they were garish, she was always one for colors that didn't assault the eyes. |
