The fresh air, the light breeze, the high sun, Vyse couldn't think of a worse day to volunteer for guard duty at the refugee camp... it was to nice a day to stand there, do rounds and then stand some more. He had originally started volunteering to hunt out corruption in this area, he had found very little sign of it, but possibly something that could lead to a small smuggling operation. Not much but any corruption destroyed while helping out the refugees was worth it. He looked on at the woods, wondering if they were hiding their goods in there, or one of the tents, either way he'd have to get information first, he wasn't the best at talking, though his swords made most men sing. "What a boring day..." moaned Vyse as he trudged along, doing the rounds for the southern side of the camp. |

In the wake of Taras' collapse, this refugee camp had, for lack of a better term, become the city of Taras, well on its way to recovery into the city that had been consumed by demonic hordes years before. Traders, however, still passed through this desolate camp, selling their wares at whatever price to the destitute people of the former kingdom that had once dominated this place. As such, Logan Pathwalker was drawn here to trade for various goods at he'd been back during his retirement in his hermitage in Norwood forest. Though he now lived a life on the move, the Ranger still required the purchasing of various supplies he used in snagging his food in his journeys, mainly through traps. He hoped to have himself a bow soon, which would make this sort of hunting a lot easier. With a sack of supplies at his side, Logan now sat at a small campfire he'd built on the southern edge of the camp. He would be leaving soon, probably back to the forest where he could rest beneath the stars. But for now, he was content sitting at a fire roasting a small side of beef he'd bought from the guards' rations while he sharped his bastard sword, Thrae, with a small whetstone. The ranger looked up, for a second, when he heard footsteps approaching. It was a volunteer on patrol for the guard, seemingly bored out of his mind with the day. Ceasing his sharpening, Logan raised a hand in greeting and called out to him. "Oi, brave man, have a seat and enjoy a good meal for your patrol. I'll be gone before long, myself." |

Vyse smiled, not many people were willing to share what little they had, a kind soul was hard to find. "Thank you traveler, it has been a long day of walking the perimeter, I would be honored to sit down and eat with you," Vyse sat down, he was slightly suspicious, sitting down on his legs so he could bring a knee and bounce up in a second, the steel of his swords showing slightly for a quick draw. "I am Vyse Noclan, who might you be traveler?" Vyse used the corners of his eyes to search out the area, not many people, nobody robbing or skulking. What a major disappointment, seems like whatever corruption lies here is well hidden. All he had to go on was a few ledger mistakes that he had written down in his journal. He thumbed through it quickly, not seeing any missing beef he pocketed the book and gave his full attention to the traveler. Edited by Vyse, Mon Jun 6, 2011 3:40 pm.

Quite enthusiastic, this one, Logan thought to himself as he briefly and wryly regarded the man's swords as he thumbed through his ledger, for what reason Logan could only guess at. Due to a rash of thefts, though, the ranger guessed that he was checking to make sure Logan had not stolen the beef from the guards. Pulling out his clay pipe and filling it with tobacco, Logan began lightly puffing the dry tobacco to test the taste. "I'm the last person you'd want to scrutinize for theft, lad," Logan growled, his lips still clasped around the stem of his pipe. Taking a bit of tinder he'd used to start the fire, Logan lit it using heat from the flames and then ignited the tobacco in his pipe. "However, it's good that you're at least shouldering some sort of responsibility. Damn place has gone to hell since the collapse of Taras. I'm surprised there's anyone sticking around." "Call me Peacemaker, by the way. That's the only name you need to know," Logan said, using an old title he'd carried during his adventuring days when he was much more famous than he was now. After drawing a short dagger and cutting chunks of beef off of the side he'd cooked, the ranger laid them onto a stone spit he'd cleaned from the purpose of serving as a makeshift plate. "Help yourself," said Logan, gesturing to the meat. |

Vyse sat down, smirking a bit, this responsibility was nothing compared to his normal jobs of exterminating those of evil intent. Vyse took a piece, biting into it, it was pretty good. "Ah, well I've volunteered for guard duty here several times, though it doesn't seem to matter how many people I arrest, more thieves pop up out of nowhere, its like someone is helping the ones I imprison to escape..." He had rolled that thought around in his head for days, no matter how many people he helped put behind bars, more popped up, he guessed one of the guardsman was crooked, helping break out the thieves in exchange for some kind of profit, though at the moment that didn't matter. "Well at least there are some kind people here, its a shame that they're the ones that tend to get robbed the most." He remembered earlier that day hearing complaints of stolen food and water, though for some reason he wasn't put on the case to find them... instead he was told to patrol this area, a relatively quiet one. Maybe they thought he was still green and wanted to take care of it by themselves, or perhaps something more sinister. He thought this peacemaker man was a man of some valor, it wouldn't hurt to talk to him about his suspicions, "I think there are a few rats in the guard around here... stolen things are never found even though most of the time we bring the thieves in, not to mention the guards are getting a bit... lazy, its like some of them want the thefts to happen." He finished off the meat in his hand, mulling over what he just said, he hoped that Peacemaker had seen something to confirm his suspicions, though he doubted it, oh well if he knew nothing maybe he could give him some insight or wisdom. |

Logan had gone back to his sword sharpening while Vyse vented briefly about the troubles and frustration of his posting. Seemingly ignoring the man, Logan concentrated on refining Thrae to a razor edge. The old sword was still a powerful and reliable weapon, sure, but it had problems holding its edge these days, as was a problem with a lot of old weapons. Once Vyse was done speaking, Logan cleaned and sheathed his sword before refilling his pipe and lighting it. "You seem rather quick to jump to the conclusion that the guard is full of corruption, lad," Logan said patiently as he drew from his pipe, "What sort of proof have you seen or found to back up these suspicions?" |

"Only whispers and rumors, nothing that I could go to the captain about, but it just irks me, that nothing can be done since I'm just a volunteer... if I could find out something, anything, even if it proves my theory wrong, I could rest easy." He wished his suspicions were wrong, and chances are that he was wrong, but there's still that small chance that he was right, and if he was right he needed to find proof, but that would require spying on the guards for a while, he would need help. "Though tonight I may get my answers, though I do not know much about you, Peacemaker, would you like to help me find out how the thieves are getting out, and if so, who is leading them?" He hoped the man would help, but there was no obligation, he didn't force people to help, if they said no he'd just go about doing it himself, it has happened countless times before, he doubted that it would be the last. |

"It's strange, to go into the world once more and emerge from seclusion only to discover that no one remembers who you are anymore," Logan mused softly, "I was once quite famous as an adventurer, Noclan. I was called Peacemaker because I was known to help the downtrodden and find peace amongst the greatest of turmoil. I must admit, emerging from my hermitage has been an interesting experience." "Tell me of your suspicions, Vyse. What rumors and whispers have aroused your suspicion to the corruption lurking in Taras' guardsmen," the ranger asked softly after a brief silent musing and puffing on his pipe. "I'm not especially certain, but your suspicions do not fall on deaf ears if you've compelling enough whispers to interest me." |

"Word has it that a member of the guard has close ties with some bandits that used to raid caravans coming here, I know who hired the bandits to steal from the caravans, but I have no possible way to prove it... yet. The problem is the bandits come and go, they know the exact dates and places where the caravans will be and raid them accordingly, either they got lucky or some members of the guard are in on it. I doubt some local thieves and two-bit bandits could organize a real raiding group to stop an armed and protected caravan without some inside help..." He himself had been part of the caravan that came in a few days ago, he had fought the bandits but failed to stop them from stealing a large portion of the supplies. He looked around before standing up, "I need to finish my patrol, I'll meet you back here once my shift is over, please think about it and keep your ears open and eyes peeled, any little clue you might see could help." Vyse stood up, bowing slightly to Peacemaker, he preferred to show some manners to heroes, and he felt this Peacemaker would make a good teacher, he hoped to learn something from him if he helped him on this mission, and if it was successful, the thieves plundering the poor would stay behind bars and the supply caravans would come here safe and sound. |

"I already have a clue, lad," Logan grunted, his voice muffled by his pipe, as he reached beneath the tail of his longcoat, splayed across the ground, and pulled out a full hauberk of chainmail. Into the chest of the mail was stamped a design: the crest of the Taras Guardsmen. Tossing it at Vyse's feet, Logan downed a few bites of beef before continuing. "I took that off of the body of a raider who'd attacked one of the caravans with a whole gang last week," Logan said, eating some more beef as he said so, "I tracked the whole gang down, wound up killing the lot of them when they discovered me snooping through their stash of stolen goods. Took that off of one of the leaders. I've been saving that, waiting for at least one guardsman who had a decent sense of justice in him anymore..." |

"So the bandits are acting like guardsmen... and taking the supplies before it even gets to the caravan by raiding normally or probably saying they're an extra guard, come to help escort them, it would then be easy to kill them in their sleep and steal the goods... or any number of other things. We need a bit more proof then a hauberk though... we could be accused to be thieves ourselves." He scratched his chin, he didn't know what exactly to do... but he had to think fast. A spark went off in his mind, maybe if he had a bit more information... "I'm going to ask the captain if we received orders for reinforcements in the last few weeks and our casualty along with any missing persons reports for guards and volunteer guards, think you could spot the leader's face if we had a sketch of it?" He hoped Peacemaker could, the fact the man was missing or dead, the hauberk that might fit him, that would be enough for the guard to take action and search its ranks for enemies. Hey, if they were lucky they might find the leader in the guard and easily apprehend them. |

"The bandits ARE guardsmen, at least some of them," Logan growled, sweeping aside Vyse's speculations, "I would know because the guard I took this off of I shared a drink with once back when Taras was still Taras and not this smoking ruin. I was a hermit prior to Taras' destruction, but I still made the occasional foray here for supplies." Putting out his pipe and finishing the beef he'd made, Logan sheathed Thrae before continuing. "Not all were guardsmen, though. They looked like desperadoes and profiteers trying to exploit the desperate situation of the people. If we're to root out this corruption you speak of, we need to find the collaborators and use them to lead us to the leader. I would recognize the leader, though, as he was the only one who escaped my wrath in our fight. Piercing eyes, he had, with a scar over one. Find out who the corrupt guardsman I slew associated with, at least one of them assisted him, I'm sure of it. Blake Dirit, his name was, very boisterous kind of guy. Be careful with your captain, though, because if anyone could be coordinating corruption in a city guard it's almost always officers, never the grunts." |

"I'll look into it, I'll meet you back here with what I've gathered, I'll be discreet and swift, but first I need to finish my rounds. Thank you for helping me Peacemaker, I will see you soon." Vyse quickly went about his rounds, walking swiftly to catch up for lost time, he would need to be twice as vigilant and watch all the guardsmen that Blake associated with. Vyse arrived at the tent that hosted a small rest area for the guards after hours, a personal pub so they can get drunk and discuss guard duty without any prying eyes and ears. Vyse was done with his walk when he reached this place, he decided to walk in and listen, something may pop up. That's when he saw the man with a scar over his eye, he was laughing and saying what a 'haul' today was, he apparently had found plenty of contraband food, now the guard wouldn't need to buy from the peasants that had some extra. Vyse thought back to what had just recently been stolen... food, and lots of it, maybe he was helping someone steal this stuff and then he would give a portion of it back to the guard and call it 'contraband' and he'd get credit for helping the guard... the two faced traitor. Then it went quiet, only murmurs were going by now, Vyse looked around, they were staring at him... Vyse looked at them back, they weren't wearing their hauberks... that's when he saw the pins, a dagger and coin purse, these men were more then guards, they were part of his father's smuggling operation, it all made sense now. "Ah... I forgot to report to the captain, crap, can someone order me a drink? I'll be right back!" He ran out, it would be stupid to run straight to Peacemaker, so he did as he said and ran back to the captain, gave his report and made an inquiry about Blake. He was told about Lt. Kenneth's, the man with a scar, recent accomplishment and the fact that he was often patrolling the west end. Vyse smirked, that was the same place where he entered from, that means if anything the bandit's loot was in the camp itself if not close by. He walked back slowly to his own small tent, eating some bread and drinking a small amount of water. He walked back to Peacemaker, looking around to make sure no one had followed him. "I know who's employing them... I also know that they've been keeping an eye on me, in other words, I know that they work for my father, and they know that I've been hunting him and his cronies down for a little over a year now, but the supplies he's been stealing can't be to far away from camp and are probably on the west side where he usually patrols, I think we could tail him to where it is if he goes there today." Vyse grimaced, he would need to call in back up... back up with fangs and claws, his pet Dire Tiger. "I think he'll go back, he seems to be giving the guard good sized portions of food for some credit... he's basically throwing around the wealth he's stolen, calling it 'contraband' and giving it to the guard so we can having a good meal... it sickens me." Vyse could feel his rage boil, he forcibly took a deep breath, he needed to stay calm, if he went berserk here that wouldn't do him any good... he just needed to wait. While Vyse had been busy with his errand running, Logan had busied himself packing up his kit, as little as it was. Cutting off as much beef as he could and slicing it into strips, Logan lay them on a spit and covered the strips in a firm layer of salt. Rolling the strips up and covering them with an oiled cloth, Logan stowed this beef in his pack as a form of food for when he was on the road again. Afterward, he packed up his sharpening equipment before stowing his now-empty pipe in his pocket and fastening his traveling cloak around his shoulders and putting his hood up. When Vyse returned, Logan gave the young man a pat on the shoulder before picking up the chainmail hauberk he'd shown the boy earlier and also stowing it in his pack. Tossing the pack over his shoulder, Logan motioned for Vyse to follow at his side as he began to make his way past the perimeter of the camp. Fastening his swordbelt around his waist, Logan loosened Thrae in its scabbard before setting off. "I'm guessing you were seen in your time away," Logan grunted softly, under his breath to avoid being overheard, "Odds are, they also saw you talking to me at some point, and they know that I'm onto their little conspiracy. While I have no doubt they're stashing the loot somewhere in the ruins, now, they stashed the loot at a clearing where they made camp before I discovered it. I say we pretend that I'm taking you to this stash of loot, like right now, and see how many of the corrupt guardsmen we can draw to follow us, as they'd probably relish an opportunity to knock the both of us off." |

Vyse smirked, this would be an easy way to kill them off... if they were lucky Kenneth would be among them, but he doubted if, they would probably need to keep one alive. "There were roughly a dozen in the bar... all wearing the pin, my father is a powerful man with very... horrifying magical and alchemical goods. We should be wary, my father has made a pill that contains quite a bit of necromantic energies in it, I've never got it properly studied, but from ingesting it you slowly become an undead... though if you die with it still in your system your body almost instantly rises as a zombie... we may need to kill these men twice." He remembered his first encounter with those blasted things... a good half dozen men he killed rose from the dead to attack him in the far north, even though they were just zombies, they were still monstrously strong. "We should probably behead them before they can get up, just in case they're packing those pills..." Vyse quickly looked around, he saw a flash of steel, then nothing... it seems some friends were following them, Peacemaker's plan was already working. Vyse loosened the blades in his sheathes and followed him, once they were in the clearing and the enemy attacks them, he'd whistle for back up... lets see how great they are once one thousand pounds of muscle, fangs, and claws hits them, he smirked, his secret weapon would be very useful in time. |
