Kaess exited the teleport pad with Shalia following him for the moment. It had been a difficult week, but at least she wasn’t transformed by his father’s spells anymore. That entire incident had been no fun. It didn’t matter that he had warned her. She had still been angry the entire time. He did find it odd that her hair wasn’t changing back and it worried him a bit.

At least now he could relax a little it seemed there was a large parade going on as part of the winter celebration. There were many things to see including some interesting birds. They almost reminded him of a phoenix, but they weren't. "Well here we are. Anything you would like to do Shalia?" ‘I wonder what they are. Well at least it should be relaxing and even Shalia can’t get mad at a party…… I hope.’

Just as he was about to relax a bit more a commotion startled one of the birds. Soon there were birds flying everywhere and bolts of lightning flying from them. He heard yells of people in panic and others were calling out for people to catch the things.

Kaess wasn’t quite sure what to do in this situation. While he was thinking a bird flew overhead and let off a burst of electric power. He only had time to say, "Oh dear ...." , while he tried to dodge the burst. He felt a small shock as a few weak bolts hit him. Shaking it off he looked over at Shalia wondering how she was responding to all this. ‘I hope she isn’t going to explode I have had enough headaches already. To think this was supposed to calm her down.... sigh why doesn’t life ever give you a break with this sort of stuff? ‘

The last week had not been a fun one for Shalia. She had been turned into a cat/fox/angel mix because of a dragon’s twisted sense of humor. She could not comprehend why the creature had made the path to his dwelling so complex. He after all seemed to *want* visitors. Why should he make it so difficult and annoying?

Thankfully now she was back to normal. There were a few changes that seemed permanent, but not unsettling. Her hair remained red now regardless of her mood. There was also a dragon tattoo on her back. Both were due to Ka, Kaess’ insane father, awakening some of her dragon powers. The color of her hair seemed to just be sign of her nature, while the marking on her back granted her draconic strength. She had to admit, she kind of did like how she discovered that little ability.

Now she and Kaess had come to Cascadia. He seemed to want to take her some place calm and peaceful to try and make up for what happened with his father. Once again she was not sure why she had come with, but it was better than sitting around and doing nothing.

The birds were of little interest to her. That was until what happened a few moments later. The creatures did not seem to enjoy being caged up that much and had broken free. Now they were making a mess of things. She quickly attempted to dodge a lightning bolt that the large blue bird produce. Much to her annoyance the static electricity from the bolt made her hair stand on end.

“Never a boring day,” she said under breath.

She pulled her pair of katanas from their scabbards. At least it gave her a chance to test out her new swords. With a thought both blades burst into flames. One red and burning hot, the other a freezing icy blue. Without a moments hesitation she charged ahead at one of the escaped birds.

Kaess was surprised by Shalia’s appearance. He had not expected her hair to go like that. Then again never having had hair himself he supposed that it was reasonable not to know. He was just glad her anger was not at him. She seemed to be intent on chasing after one of the escaped birds. He somehow wondered if the bird had any chance of survival, but it seemed like they would be helping up with round up of these things anyways.

Kaess then decided to join in the chase to capture these things. He spotted another bird going in the same general direction as Shalia and gave chase. Even with enhanced speed it was difficult to try and catch these things. Especially since his first try to grab the thing caused the bird to shock him. This caused him to fall back a bit, while the bird whirled away firing off more lightning bolts.

That bird was gone it seemed, but he still saw Shalia and ran after her. As he started to catch up he considered their options. ‘Hmm just grabbing it won’t work. What exactly am I going to do.’ He glanced at Shalia and noted a few birds were joining the first one she had chased.

‘Jeez these things are gathering even though they are scared. Not a good sign. That usually means they are hard to catch in a group. Come on think …. There must be something I have that could catch these things. Though I suppose if it goes down to it Shalia is going to chop them all into bits. I really don’t want to have to pay for that…..’

He continued to think as they continued the chase. He always kept a short distance behind Shalia. The last thing he wanted was her anger directed at him again. Especially for another thing that wasn’t his fault.

The birds were out of Shalia’s reach. But she had a different trick up her sleeve. She uttered a few arcane words under her breath as she chased after the birds. Upon speaking the last word she pointed her hand towards the flock.

A bright orange ball of fire shot out from her fist towards the birds. When in the middle of the flock it exploded into a large fire ball. The explosion caused the birds to scatter. A few who had been in the middle of the blast fell to the ground. For many of the birds this just seemed to anger them.

The tielfing tried to duck for cover as several blasts of electricity shot towards her. She might be good with the blade, but acrobatics were not her thing. One blast hit her in the chest and sent her flying backwards several feet.

She crashed into a merchants stand and was stunned for several moments. It seemed that blasting the birds again would not be wise idea. Then as she looked up and idea popped into her head. Above the merchants stand was a tarp used to block off the sun. Made of material that did not conduct electricity well.

Shalia jumped back to her feet and quickly cut the ropes holding the trap down. She then pulled the trap off and went running back towards Kaess.

“Kaess!” she yelled. “Grab an end! Fly up and trap the things. We can’t attack them out right!”

If they could bring the birds to the ground…then they might be able to trap and control them again. It seemed like a much better idea than getting blasted with electricity again for attacking the over grown blue chickens.

Kaess was a bit surprised as Shalia launched a ball fire at the birds. She hadn’t demonstrated that ability before. At least not around him she hadn’t. He saw a couple of the birds fall, but most scattered away. Soon the birds were retaliating in fashion. There were shots of lightning coming at her and a few of them at him. Being ready he dodged them, but he still felt tingling from where the bolts came close.

He did notice Shalia fly into a stand after being hit. She got up looking alright for the moment and he sighed in relief. ‘At least these bolts aren’t too dangerous, but still it looks like we better contain these things fast. They could start killing people soon enough. ‘ He glanced at the two on the ground noting they weren’t moving for the moment. At least that was a few they didn’t have to catch now.

He then heard Shalia shout at him. She had a tarp of sorts and he decided it was as good an idea as any. “Alright might as well try that.” He moved over quickly taking an end and flying up with it. He soon targeted a pair of thunder birds. He worked with Shalia moving the tarp into position over the pair of birds before let himself drop a bit towards the ground. The two birds found themselves trapped under the tarp. Both tried to escape by flying upwards, but they couldn’t tear the material. Bolts of electricity scattered about into the ground below the tarp, but it seemed like it was working.

Landing on the ground completely he held down the tarp with Shalia. “Okay we got a pair trapped for now what do we do. However, we can't move them as is. We have got to tie them up or cage them somehow…. You got any more ideas?”

The plan seemed to have worked. They now had two of the birds trapped under the tarp. She carefully scooped her end of the tarp under the birds and quickly tied it shut with the rope attached to it. Now the birds were tied inside of a makeshift sack. She picked it up and spotted a man who seemed to be the bird’s handler.

She tossed the sack at him. “Cage those things back up,” she said. “And make sure they don’t get out this time!”

She looked back to the sky and saw that there were still a good number of the birds flying around. A long sigh escaped her lips. This was going to take a while. If only she had not let Kaess talk her into coming here…she might have actually had a peaceful day. But things never seemed to go calmly around Kaess…

The tielfing moved over to another merchant’s stand and cut loose the tarp on that one as well. The owner began shouting at her but quickly closed his mouth when she shot him a glare. She tossed one end to Kaess.

“That seemed to work,” she said. “Lets try to catch a few more before they figure out what we are doing.”

Once he flew up she would move with him to maneuver the tarp to catch a few more of the birds. She figured they might be able to catch three to four more birds with this tactic before they scattered and became more difficult to catch. She just hoped that this whole ordeal would be over quickly…

Kaess held the birds down as Shalia found a tied a rope around the tarp. Soon she was tossing the bag at him. Once he held the bag he considered where to put the birds. Surely the sack wouldn’t hold them forever and there wasn’t exactly a cage nearby. It frustrated him a bit. “Oh yes just cage them back up. Right after I find a cage I suppose I could. Sigh.”

While pondering what to do with the birds he glanced in the same direction as Shalia. ‘Great still so many birds running around in this area. Can’t things ever go smoothly when I am around Shalia…. sigh I get the feeling that it just isn’t meant to be. Doesn’t help that I still have these damn feelings for her.’

He spotted a small wooden cage in the corner of one of the alleyways. It wasn’t the largest of cages, but is should hold the 4 or 6 birds in sacks. He tested it and it was sturdy enough and had a simple, but good latch. He put the birds in the cage and latched it shut. ‘There at least I have a little luck it seems. They won’t escape if they get out of the bag now.’

Soon he was running to take another tarp from Shalia. “Alright we might as well try to get a few more. Can’t argue with a something that is works.” It would take a bit more effort this time as the birds were starting to fly a bit higher, but several were still low enough. He flew up and a little luck came with him as a group of three birds flew out of an alley right under the tarp.

He let himself drop again and held down the tarp while Shalia found some more rope to tie these three birds up.

It seemed like the tactic worked to catch a few more birds. Shalia quikcly tied up the birds so that they would not escape and rejoin the flock. The tiefling looked up at the sky. The rest of the birds were now too high up for the same trick to work again. She figured she would not be able to jump up to the creatures.

But Kaess could fly up. She wondered how they could use his wings to their advantage. As she was trying to figure something out a screach filled the air. Another thunderbird had appeared, and it was much larger than all the others. It seemed like this bird was the leader of the flock. If they could subdue that one they might be able to calm the rest of the flock.

“Lets go for the big one,” she said. “Any ideas?”

She figured the tarp trick they had used would not work on a bird of this size. Nor did she really think Kaess would come up with anything helpful. She began to look around for anything that could be used to rope the bird down. If that failed she figured she could just kill the thing…

She saw the birds were beginning to gather together now. Something told her that she had to keep that from happening. Once again she raised a hand towards the flock and uttered a few words. The fireball exploded near the birds and they scattered one again.

“We have to do something before they regroup,” she said.

Kaess worked on storing the newly caught birds with the others. This only took a few moments and he soon was running back towards Shalia. He had heard her talking about going for a bit one and now looked for it in the sky. He soon saw the bird and considered his options for getting it down.

Shalia seemed to take the initiative by firing another fireball. ‘She is getting impatient. All that will do is get them annoyed and probably turn their attention…. to her….. that’s it if she can distract them long enough I might be able to push them down with the wind. It has been a while since I tried doing that, but I can certainly try again.’

He then heard Shalia talking to him again. “Yes we do. Though I have an idea that might get that bird down. It will take me some time to get into position and build up the power, so if you can keep the birds distracted that would be good.”

Without really waiting he took to the air again letting himself feel the flows of the wind. His blood started to boil, but it wasn’t into fire. This time his magic was building up in the flows of the wind around him. He wasn’t as good with this type of magic so it was slow to build up. Plus he had to make sure the wind blast would be powerful enough to ground that bird.

The bird’s size showed that it wouldn’t go down easy and was probably used to hard winds. Still if Shalia kept it distracted and Kaess hitting it in the right spot the bird would fall. There were just some angles you couldn’t fight the wind at. Still this was the best plan he could come up with for the moment.

She glanced over to Kaess. It seemed like the half-dragon had something planned. But he needed her to keep the bird busy. Easier said than done when it was out of her reach. She also did not think that another fire ball would really help much. Might just make the bird fly away.

But she figured it was better than nothing. She began to utter the words for the spell once more. Then an idea popped into her head. Perhaps she could change the shape of the fire into something more useful than an exploding ball.

A ball of fire appeared between her hands, but instead of letting it fly at the thunder bird, she closed her fist around it. She willed the fire to take the shape she desired and it grew into a long whip like shape.

With this she could reach the bird. She sent the flaming whip into the air towards the bird while holding onto her end tightly. The magic fire wrapped itself around the bird’s leg. The creature tried to pull away. Had she not had the strength of a dragon, the bird would have easily escaped her hold…but it was no match for the power of a dragon.

The bird screeched as it tried to escape not only the hold it was in, but the burning flames. Shalia was hard pressed to try and hold onto the whip and avoid the bolts of lightning it sent her way. She hoped that Kaess would do what he was planning on and soon. If she got hit by the this bird’s lightening she did not think she would be getting back up any time soon.

“Hurry it up you over grown lizard,” she yelled at Kaess. “I can’t hold this thing forever!”

Kaess flew fast as he gained height he continued to feel the pulse of his magic grow around him. As he started to turn he saw Shalia holding the birds attention with a whip of fire. It was quite an impressive manipulation of fire magic. ‘She really is talented with fire. I suspect the next stage of the burning fist should manifest quite soon. Well I better get this over with. I should be just about there.’

He pulled around into a good spot where he could hover for a bit. He then called out as he pulled the last of the magic together. “Brace your self Shalia. I don’t have a lot of control over this spell. Once that bird is down I will leave it to you to capture the thing.” He waited a few moments to let Shalia prepare and then started the spell. With a strong beat of his wings he let the magic go. A blast of Gale force wind was unleashed behind the targeted thunder bird. Other birds were being force aside or down to the ground as well, but the brunt of the blast was all taken by the leader of their flock.

The strong wind continued with each beat of his wings and he saw the flock leader start to fall and soon was desperately trying to land and escape the winds he was creating. It a only took a few moments, but it seemed much longer. Still soon enough the bird was on the ground and he let the magic go. He felt a bit of fatigue from using the spell, but he knew he would recover in a bit. ‘I really must practice this side of my magic more. It just won’t do to continue to have it drain me like this every time I use it.’

He aimed himself for the ground to help Shalia secure the bird. Still he kept a wary eye out as that bird might try to escape to the skies again.

Shalia braced herself and held onto the rope of fire tightly as Kaess released his spell. The strong winds made her hair fly wild and caused her to slide back a few inches. But the wind seemed to be forcing the bird down. As the creature drew closer to the ground, Shalia pulled to rope in making it even harder for the bird to regain flight.

As soon as the thing was on the ground she pulled the fire lash off its leg. Before the creature could regain its bearings she wiped it out again and wrapped the lash around the creature’s neck. This would hold it to the ground long enough for it to be restrained.

The winds died down as the effects off the spell wore off and Kaess came to the ground. Good, now he could help finish in the capture of this annoying creature.

“Quickly grab something to cover it with!” she said. “I won’t be able to hold this spell too much longer.”

In trust the manipulation of the fire had taken a lot out of her. It was her first time using fire magic on her own. And she had never tried to manipulate the flames themselves into a different form before. This certainly was a skill she would have to practice and master. At least something useful had come of this whole ordeal.

When Kaess was finished with the bird she would release her spell. “Last time I ever follow somewhere for a ‘relaxing’ time,” she growled. “Nothing is ever relaxing when it involves you.”

Kaess flew down quickly grabbing a large tarp on the way down and soon was on the ground. He quickly tossed the thing on the bird. He held it down through the tarp. Even with the heavy fabric he still got shocked quite a bit, but he managed to hold it down until the bird lost the strength to struggle. He could still feel it moving, so it was alive, but it seemed subdued.

Only once this had happened did he look up and noticed that any bird still in the area was out of sight. ‘I guess seeing this guy go down scarred them off. Well time to get them back.’ He got another tarp to wrap the bird in and proceeded to collect the others they had left trapped.

“Well it looks like we are finished up here for now. Sorry about this I never expected such trouble to find me here. I suppose that was too much to hope for with my luck. Anyways I get the feeling you probably want a break from me. So, why don’t we go our own ways for a bit? Come find me when you see signs of your hands or fists creating ash. It is just something people develop once they start on the path of the Burning fist. I can teach you far more if we wait until you develop that ability anyways.

I will take the birds back to their owners. Well until I see you again.”
He started to walk away with sacks and cages in his hands. There was the occasional squawk of a bird, but no electricity for the moment. Soon he would have these annoying things back to their proper handlers and then there was paying for the damages. What a pain today was turning out to be.

It had taken a lot to say some of the things without being disappointed. He just knew that this love was going to be one sided. Still he continued to hope that would change. If only all these things didn’t keep happening when he was trying to be nice or impress her. ‘Then again the only thing she would be impressed with is if I closed off my emotions like she does. Sigh….. how do you get someone like her to open up?’

She glared at him as he spoke, a fire raged behind her strong lavander eyes. Although she was a bit surprised when he suggested that she take a break from him. She quite liked that idea. Not only would it get her away from the idiot for a time, but it would also allow her to return to Balefire. She needed a few things that would help her free Rimmon from her slavery, and a normal city was not the place for that sort ofwork.

She simply nodded to him. “Departing from you would be a good thing,” she said. “I shall return when I notice the signs you described. Then continue with your training so I can put my back to you permanently.”

Without another word, she turned and walked away from him. Many of the people were still confussed over the recent chaos, but she paid them no heed. The remainder of the outbreak was their problem and not her’s. She did not stop walking until she reached the place that would take her out of the city. She doubted that she would ever willingly return to this floating city. And she certinally would not follow Kaess on another one of his little treks. They just ended badly.
