Here it was, a beautiful sight of Cascadia all dressed off for the annual event, the Midwinter Festival. All round it seemed that soft magical fires glowed their festive hues, flickering, dimming, and growing as the wind would permit. Buddy Holly didn’t believe in ruining such a festive time, even though his preferred monetary gains was to steal, he even took time off during this wondrous time of year. To be perfectly honest, this was only his second time of the event, but the first time when he had come across it without realizing, he had almost instantly regretted stealing from people during the season. No regret hung over his head this year, however. He was good with the whole self-control aspect; it wasn’t very hard to remember not to steal with all of the festive decorations around anyway.

The thief walked down a joyous though empty street with his magical bag over one shoulder, held loosely in the hooked grasp of two fingers, the festivities had ended, and he was left to wander alone. Ah well, it was still a happy place. And as Buddy walked by the houses all decorated proper for the night, he wondered how many children were anxiously awaiting their gifts. Such peaceful air brought memories of home, of the people who were no more… The thief stopped, a result of his overwhelming memories, the slight grin he had worn on his face and slipped away. He turned, and sat down against a quiet house, for a moment, burying his head in his arms which rested on his knees, trying to hold back stray tears. The mother who had coddled him, the father who taught him how to fish, the friends he knew… As far as he knew, the only survivors from Arda were himself and Zangetsu.

As if a specter of the Midwinter Night, the black bobtailed cat appeared from a small alley with a resounding meow as he walked over to Buddy and began rubbing up against his leg. The rogue lifted his head and moved and arm to gently stroke the cat’s back, he wasn’t completely alone. He needed to stop forgetting that. The people he met in this world… They would never be able to be compared to his old one, but they were what he had now.

The thief looked up from his knees, the smile having once again returned to his face as he rubbed the tears from his eyes on his brown coat sleeve, but as quickly as it had returned the smile faded. This time, not to memories, but of the sight of a figure jumping from one roof to another before slipping down the chimney somehow; magic was the quick answer to how, but the main thing that bother Buddy was the when. A look of determination came across his face, he wasn’t going to allow even another thief to rob from a sleeping family while he was around, even if it meant breaking a few laws himself.

As quickly as he could, Buddy took his thief’s kit from his jacket pocket and began quickly, and quietly, picked the lock, letting himself in to the house he saw the thief enter. He crept across the floorboard, , though only after making sure to silently close the door behind him, in case there might be any pets inside the house, and into the living room with the fireplace. There he saw a man in a red coat walking around the room with his own bag. Buddy kept to the shadow, waiting for the man to move closer before he leapt from the shadows, his knife aimed for a non-critical spot before he would utter the incantation to electrify the blade and stun the thief long enough to drag him out of the home. However, it was to no avail, the man in the red coat was quicker than the man in the red coat, twisting around just in time, letting his own bag in the floor as quiet as a mouse, and grabbing Buddy’s right wrist, the one connected to the hand holding the dagger before he twisted him around to lock his arms behind his back and take the knife from Buddy’s hand.

“I’m not letting you ruin these people’s Midwinter with your thievery!” Buddy exclaimed under hushed breath before attempting to kick the red-coated thief in the shin. Again, his efforts at assault were in vain, as the man had simply moved where his shin was.

“Would you stop it? I am not here to ruin anybody’s night… I am leaving these people gifts… Except for the boy, he’s been rather bratty and rude to his sister.” The man in the red coat replied quickly and with an equally shushed tone, “And before you go questioning things, Buddy. and I’m saying that as in your name, not just a friendly reference to another person without using your name, though while I'm on the subject of that for the moment, your name does make it convenient to call you Buddy, and I hope that by the time this night is over, you'll end up calling me Buddy to. At any rate, I’m the Red Rogue.”
“Wait, what? That is so randomly narcissistic, and thanks for the pseudo-compliment on my name,"
"You're welcome."
"But, I mean, seriously? Calling yourself the Red Rogue because you’re a rogue who wears a red coat? What, then does that make me the Brown Rogue? What about the other rogues out there wearing coats? Are they the Brown, Black and Red Rogues, too?”
“Come on Buddy, I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do with you! I know you’ve stolen from a lot of people, a lot of personal and valuable items and then sold them, but then you turn around and help other people? Now tell me, how is a guy who steals from bad people and gives gifts to good people supposed to respond to that?”
“Uh, gee, how about not slipping into a house through the chimney and lying about not stealing stuff from them and then putting a guy into an arm-lock for trying to stop a robbery?"
"Hey, I was only defending myself, you're the one who was lunging at me with an electrified knife!"
"You weren't going to die or be severely damaged in any way... Unless you have heart complications."
"I don't."
"See then? No real harm to you!"
“Look, here's an idea, how about I prove to you I'm not out to ruin anybody's holiday? That way, I can let you go, and get back to work.” The man claiming to be the Red Rogue offered at last to end this hushed back-and-forth. Buddy paused for a moment before responding, still not dropping his hushed tone.
“Allright, but only as long as I get my knife back!”
“Deal.” The Red Rogue said, letting the Brown Rogue go and tossing him his knife before returning to work letting out an annoyed sigh, muttering something under his breath as he took wrapped gifts from his bag.

Ah, a beautiful night! In more than one way, Allaer would say. It is a true fact that he missed the Sun his people were named after yet he had adjusted to the night life quite well. The decorations all around Cascadia for the holidays were also quite lovely as well. A visitor to the city might say that Cascadia was a beautiful city. The City of Art some call it. Yet Allaer could only truly say that this floating city was beautiful when all of its citizens pulled together to make it look even better. Even in the parts of the city where people didn't have as much material or time to make it as grand as other parts it was still a sight. In Allaer's mind anyways. The idea of accomplishment when people pull together to make something like this was enough for Allaer.

Well one might say this Allaer guy wasn't half bad with these kinds of thoughts and views of accomplishment. Just because he wasn't a person who would damn the holiday sights, doesn't mean he wasn't out to get his own fix. He needed money, stealing was the easiest way for him to get it recently. His main thought tonight was how to get money, of all nights too! Then it hit him! This night! "Aha! I gots its!" He exclaimed out loud. Almost no one was on the streets this late so no one heard him.

Tonight was the night of The Red Rogue! People are expecting this guy to sneak into their houses and give them gifts, if they were good anyways. Allaer wasn't exceptionally bad... he wondered if he was going to get anything this year at all. He didn't last year. Infact, last year his favorite book went missing... Wait, that wasn't important right now! But that book was so good even when he reread it... no! Focus. Okay, focusing. Allaer would have started pacing back and fourth while he thought but the idea was just so simple. He didn't need to think about it.

Break into people's houses while pretending to be the Red Rogue! It was genius! Why didn't he think of it before hand!? His only problem, how the blood-soaked Abyss was he going to get down chimneys? He looked around at the nearest house. Well, time to attempt it. He walked around the building for any good areas to try and access. He found a cart with a tarp over it. He could climb on that! As he did so, he made sure to step on the edges and not the tarp. He didn't know what was in it and didn't want to get his feet stuck in anything or break something that could be under it.

After that Allaer attempted to grab onto the ledge of the roof. It was still too high up. He placed his foot on the wall and attempted to grab an indent where something seemed to hit it and break it sometime in the past. After that he attempted to pull himself up. His next grab went for the leg. His feet were trying to grab hold of some place on the wall but slipping. He was able to grab the roof. As he was going to pull himself up with his other arm, his hand hit a patch of ice. His hand slipped and he slammed his elbow into the roof. There went his gripped. Before he could even hiss in pain he noticed that he was falling off the roof.

He fell back first onto the tarp of the cart. Which ended up being filled with unused stones of various sizes. "Ow..." He whined to himself as he attempted to get up and only achieved rolling out of the cart and onto the ground. "Thats hurts." He moaned as he got back up. Okay, he was discouraged from attempting the chimneys again. That wouldn't stop his brilliant plan to imitate the Red Rogue to steal!

Now for another approach and came the pacing. In the alleyway there he was. Pacing back and forth, walking five steps in one direction and then back again. Habit of someone who wasn't use to living in a large room. This lasted a handful of minutes until somewhere he heard a door slam shut with a "Ba-humbug!" and people running off. He didn't know what was going on with that but it gave him an idea. There are some houses without chimneys of course! If they were expecting the Red Rogue they would probably leave their front doors unlocked! Yes! Allaer, two points; the law, zipadedoda.

Of course while he was here he might as well try the house he just tried to break into through his... experimental attempt. He went to the front door and tried it. It opened! That was convenient. He opened the door and just let it glide shut behind him as he walked in. He was attempting to be quiet but some things still rattled when he moved. He heard voices though, the family was awake? Maybe he could imitate the Red Rogue enough that he could trick the people inside. He glanced at himself wearing black. Okay, that wouldn't work!

Either way, Allaer walked into a room only to notice two people already standing there. One had just been released from an arm lock as the other moved to his bag. "Oh!" He exclaimed forgetting to be quiet. He remembered and quieted down. "Looks like I wasn'ts the firsts thief here. I'll justs move onto the nexts house then. Happy Holidays to you two." He whispered so they could hear it. How did they think of his amazing idea? Oh well, he would have stayed but he wouldn't share with a second comer and he doubted these people would either.

Buddy wasn’t too pleased with the fact that the guy who referred to himself as the “Red Rogue” seemed to be so much quicker than he was. But oh well, it couldn’t be helped. He was let go, and it didn’t look like the red-coated thief wasn’t trying to steal anything, well, more of a non-thief, the blonde-haired rogue guessed. He was interested to ask a few questions pertaining to the whys. Why did the guy call himself the Reg Rogue, well, maybe other than the obvious red coat. Why was he having to sneak in through the chimneys if he was delivering gifts. Why did he go in through the chimney when as Buddy had only momentarily before proven, it wasn’t too hard to get in through the front door .There was also a couple of hows too, how was he so fast as to stop Buddy before he got electrocute him, and how did he know who Buddy was.

Before the pirate managed to ask a single one of these questions, the words from somebody else’s mouth caught his attention and he found himself spinning on his heels, a bit worried that the voice might perhaps belong to the owner of this house come down to see what was going on. Though, upon a glance of the third person in the room, it really didn’t seem like anybody who would be living in this house. Pale skin, pointy ears, black jacket. Damnit! Of course there was one of the wearing a black jacket now!

“Look at that, Red! There’s the Black Rogue right there, just like I said.” Holly made sure to exclaim in a hushed tone. The Red Rogue gave a sigh as he stood up from placing some gift boxes under a pine tree which was decorated with colorful ornaments.

“Yes, I know all about Shinethorn here. Or as you want to call him, the Black Rogue. Not too far off either. And, Allaer, I’ve enjoyed reading your favorite book, wonder what you’ll lose for your wicked deeds next? You’ll find out when you wake up tomorrow night.” The Red Rogue said sternly, though remaining in the hushed tone, before lifting a red satchel over his shoulder, not caring if it might infuriate the vampiric sun elf or not, “Oh, and before you think to shout or anything, you should probably know that this is the home of a skilled Vampire Hunter.”

The Brown Rogue just looked at the Black Rogue for a moments, having figured out what he was from the Red Rogue’s comment.

“Hah, you’re a contradiction! A vampiric sun elf! How in blazing hell does that happen? Some vampire just get the idea to make your life a living hell or something?” Buddy couldn’t help but goad in his quiet voice. The Red Rogue stopped for a moment, looking the two back over.

“I just got a nice idea… Black Rogue, Allaer, if you want your book back, you’re going to have to do something actually good, and Brown Rogue, you can help out too. You see, you two have slowed me down enough, I’m not going to be able to get to all of the houses on my own before sunrise. If you two take part of my workload, I’ll give you both a gift or two, and for you Shinethorn, your present will be your book back, I kept in in the same condition as when I took it last year.” He proposed, lowering his sack to the ground momentarily, “Bud,”
“Don’t call me Bud just yet,”
“Fine, Buddy, you leave some gifts behind, and Allaer, you can take some from the designated people. If you two can manage that, I’ll mark you on my list of people deserving of a present this year, if you deviate in the slightest, you can both say goodbye to your favorite things.”
“If you so much as lay a hand on Zangetsu’s fur—“
“Don’t worry, I’ll leave him for you, after all, I’m not a fan of getting scratched up.”
“… Allright, I’m game.” Buddy said, not caring particularly too much about some of his other possessions. The Red Rogue pulled a list from his red satchel, magically shortened to only include a few names, some with the word ‘Just’ written next to them, and other with the word ‘unjust,’ it was a simple list, and he handed it over to Buddy, “Don’t lose this.”

Before Allear could step outside of the living room, they spoke about him. The Black Rogue? He didn't have such a title... not yet anyways. He was about to shrug it off and keep walking before the one wearing Red spoke up. He knew his name? Both given name AND surname? What is this, he didn't even? He also knew about his favorite book... and he read his favorite book? Who was this guy!? He turned to look closely. He didn't recognise him. Black Rogue... he must be the Red Rogue! Who would've guessed! Allaer probably would have and like not attacked him with a blade thinking he was a thief trying to ruin the Holidays.

"You sh--" He started before he was interrupted by the Red Rogue. Vampire Hunter? What? "One, I don'ts believe you. Two, if you wanted me to be quiets all you had to do was ask." He said before the Brown Rogue insulted him about being a contradiction. That wasn't fair! He didn't even talk to this guy before so why was he being insulted! "Well... you suck."

A moment later, the Red Rogue made him an offer. To get his book back he would have to help the Red Rogue. He was okay with this, he was only wasting his time trying to make money anyways. At this rate he wouldn't be getting any anyways. He would be going into houses to steal from the bad people. "But waits... I can'ts go into houses withouts permission." He said before he realised he just did. "Then how did I gets in here?" The Vampire was now confused.

He had to think about it. He put his hand to his chin in thought. Why was he welcomed inside, the Brown or Red Rogue wasn't expecting him... but they were expecting a supernatural Rogue to be entering their house. So that was a good enough excuse for him! "You bests keep your promise, Red." He said and would probably just hit the same houses that the Brown Rogue hit, each house probably had multiple people to give and take from.

The Brown Rogue took a moment to look the list over, reciting the names, locations and such to memory, trying to think it back over to a few Cascadian maps he had seen at an earlier date. The houses mainly seemed to be on the same block, not too many, so it shouldn’t take too long.

“Allright then, Red Rogue. Morning comes, I say we all meet over at the Broken Strings for drinks.” The rogue said cheerfully as he rolled the scroll up and placed it in his own magical bag.
“Good, then. I already put the gifts in your bag--”
“When did you do that?”
“I’m the Red Rogue… Look, just go put the gifts in the houses, take what’s on the list, and if you do it all right, I’ll leave your gifts at the Inn.” The Red Rogue said as he tossed the satchel over his shoulder, giving a nod to the two, before he reached down and tossed them each a cookie, as well as keeping one for himself,

“Feel free to eat the treats on the plates, and… Don’t screw this up, a lot of children are counting on this night going well, and so am I.” He said to the two before a bolt cut across the air and through the line of sight of the Red Rogue. At least, for the Brown Rogue’s eyes as they followed the projectile straight to the wall.

“Son of a—“ Buddy grumbled as he quickly darted for the door to leave the apparently Vampire-Hunting house. The general thief couldn’t particularly see too well in the dark, but he was sure that the bolt was straight wood, carved to a point. The general cheap favorite of Vampire Hunters, given his encounters in Arda.

As he stopped in the dark shadow of an alley, panting, he looked back to make sure that the hunter wasn’t still chasing him, and that the Black Rogue was also with him before he recounted the addresses in his mind. As luck would have it, he recalled one of the houses being at just the other end of this alley, a couple of naughty children resided within, as well with a good one and a single mother doing her best… Damn, that scroll was detailed.

The brown rogue got his tools ready and in hand as he moved from the alley and to the next house, quietly picking the lock.

“Okay, this house should have some children, which might mean that they’re sleeping under the tree. Be very quiet, and very careful. If one of them sees you awake and asks who you are, just go ahead and say you’re the Red Rogue, if they ask why you’re wearing black, tell them that your normal coat is at the cleaners or something. If they come across both of us, just leave it to me to come up with something for you to say, and most importantly of all, don’t eat them, I can’t stress this enough, no matter how tasty they look, just wait until we’re at least to the tavern. I hear women go for the dark brooding type as well as elves, so you’re sure to be a shoo-in for a tasty meal in several regards.” Buddy chuckled as he finished picking the lock, slowly opening the door with a creek,

“And in case you’re wondering, no, it didn’t take me that long to pick it, I just wanted to go over a few things first.” He chuckled quietly, walking inside,

“There’s a toy sword and one of those cube puzzle things, those are property of the bad kids, find ‘em, take ‘em,, the toys that is, and maybe you can pawn them or something.”

Allaer was already outside as the cross bow bolt was halfway across the room. He whistled to himself calmly as he swayed back and forth on his toes. After the Brown Rogue had followed in suit outside he just got in line as they moved to the house they were going to rob and give gifts to. Was an odd concept, doing both at the same time. He could understand doing both, just not at once. At the door, the Brown Rogue just decided to pick the lock and take forever doing it. That was something he should learn how to do! Then again he can't enter homes without permission under normal circumstances so it was a useless skill for him to have.

He half paid attention as the Brown Rogue told him the situation. Just try and take the stuff and not be noticed. Got it. Just what did he have to take from them? He wasn't informed until after they were inside. It was still an odd feeling breaking into houses and not being burnt for the attempt. "Take stuff. Drink blood. Burn puppies. Gots its." He said jokingly as he went looking around.

He looked into the main living quarters of the house. There was the tree, he didn't bother checking to see if there were children under it. He had to take what was already belonging to them. He opened a door and stepped inside. His eyes flashed red as he adjusted to the darkness. As he started to look around in a wooden bin for what he was supposed to take something pulled on his jacket. He turned to look after he picked up the cube puzzle thing he had to take. "Are you the Red Rogue?" The child asked as he rubbed his eyes straining to see. "No.. yes... I.." At this point he had already messed up enough that when the child lit a candle, Allaer just made a scary face. "Boo!" He hissed and showed his fangs. The child started to cry in fright and with the light Allaer noticed the toy sword on the other side of the room.

Cheese it! Allaer thought to himself as he grabbed it and opened the window to jump out of it. He ran down the side of the house and had to wait for his partner to come out so they could move onto the next house. Okay, error one. Still, everything went better than expected.
