Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Cassiel breathed her hot breath on her hands and rubbed them together, shivering. She was not quite use to the cold as she trekked through the Mountainous North to a base camp of an expeditionary team, mostly made up of rangers and druids. Cassiel had been hired to be their healer on what she was told might be a dangerous journey. After all, this area was known to be home to many dragons. Cassiel had yet to see a Dragon, as far as she knew, and she would have hated herself if she heard there was an incident with them and people had gotten hurt because she wasn't there. For both reasons she joined the team, but she did not know much about the rest of them. But she would have plenty of time to get to know them a little.

Finally she could see the base camp, and craving the warmth of companions she quickened her pace, and when she was close enough, blinked straight into the camp. She looked around at the team, some of them seemed more used to the cold, but not everyone. It would have been embarrassing if she was the only one used to a warmer climate. Some of them seemed to be packing, getting prepared for the long journey ahead. She was not yet sure who to introduce herself to, and didn't know if she should be doing more to prepare. She had everything she owned in her backpack.

Cassiel find a little stool and sat down, hugging herself to get some warmth. Gods what she wouldn't give for a warm cloak right now. Next time she could she would buy one. Of course, there was one way to get warm she could do. Bringing her hands together, she chanted a little and in a few moments a fireball appeared. Rather then throw it at something she just kept chanting to keep it there for warmth. And it certainly felt good.

The unmistakable profile of Mt. Agaptus, known by the locals as Raelungma, loomed above as a sharp-edged spire, visibly higher than all the other mountains in the area. Nkiruka couldn't look at it for too long, as its sheer magnitude made her dizzy. The mercenary sat motionless outside her tent, wrapped tightly in a single heavy blanket. She'd reached the point where the overall discomfort of the cold was giving way to even the slightest amount of warmth generated by her body. That combined with the exhaustion of flying to base camp lulled Nkiruka into a tired trance; she stared blankly into the distance with half-closed eyes.

"...Gah!" Nkiruka abruptly jumped in surprise, disturbing the careful arrangement of her blanket. Someone had appeared in front of her literally out of nowhere, scaring her more than she could care to admit. Had the merc's hands not been tangled in a few layers of warm furs, she would've had her weapons drawn and pointed at the offending person in moments. Instead, Nki just shifted inside her blankets and tossed the girl an aggravated glare. "Best not startle me like that, little one."

She paused to actually look at the girl. Even though she was taller, she looked pretty young -- or, at the very least, she had that sort of innocent, earnest way of carrying herself that Nki saw more in children than full-grown adults. She stood out from all the world-weary grizzled old mountain men and the lithe but stuck-up and secretive druids that composed this expedition. It was also apparent that this new arrival wasn't prepared for the cold at all. It actually reminded Nki of her own first trips to the North, and the misery of being ill-equipped for the freezing wind and snow.

Nkiruka slowly stood, unwrapping the blanket from her body. Underneath, she was wearing a heavy coat, thick winter trousers, boots and mittens. As the mercenary gathered the blanket in her hands, two huge brown wings unfurled from her back, stretching to their full length and settling into a half-folded position. Feeling a bit of pity for the girl, Nki walked over to her and handed her the blanket.

"What's your name?"

Cassiel apologized when she startled the blanket wrapped person, very sincerely. She hadn't meant to scare anyone, but the woman just gave her a glare and words of wisdom about not startling her again. Cassiel sat, unaware the woman had then taken the time to study her, up until the woman let down her blanket and let her wings stretch out then half fold. Cassiel looked at her wings. While a different color then her mother's wings, for her mother did have wings, Cassiel had always wanted wings of her own. Unfortunately, the gene for it seemed to have missed it's mark. Regardless, she always admired wings.

To her surprise, the woman gave her the blanket she had been wearing to warm herself. "Oh, thank you," said Cassiel, very quickly wrapping the blanket around herself, letting the fireball die for now. It was wonder that the blanket already had the body warmth of the woman, Cassiel shivered warmly in it, snuggling it close. The woman asked for her name and Cassiel gave it.

"My name is Cassiel Aila," she said with a bright smile. "May I ask for yours, kind stranger?" Cassiel began taking notice of the woman's unusual features. Her eyes were a dark golden color, her pupils seemed slightly odd too but Cassiel could not quite put her finger on way. Perhaps it would come to her later. And then she would notice, as the woman next spoke, it seemed her teeth were longer and sharper then the average human's. Cassiel had quickly grown an interest in unique creatures and races of the world as she travelled, and now she was looking at one. It gave her a look of curiosity and wonder in her eyes, one that would be easily noticed.

She gave a curt nod, stuffing her hands into her coat pockets rather than offering a handshake. "I'm Nkiruka." Further into the camp, someone was ringing a bell and shouting that supper was ready. "You should go check in with the expedition leader. She's probably already in the mess tent by now, if that bell means what I think it means. You could follow me, I guess." Why not? Nki had been waiting for supper for a while now, so that was where she was headed as well. The pretty little girl looked a bit dumb, too -- polite, but dumb. Maybe she'd get lost without her help.

The mess tent, while oddly shaped, was the largest so-called building at base camp. The inside usually featured a table containing whatever meal was being served, surrounded by a circle of wooden benches. Dinner today appeared to be some sort of thick, soupy substance that one poured into a mug and ate with a spoon. Not many of the other expedition members had arrived yet, so it was easy for Nki to pinpoint the expedition leader out of the thin crowd. She motioned for Cassiel to continue following her.

"This one's a new arrival," Nkiruka said frankly to the wood elf sitting in front of her. The woman looked up at Cassiel.

"The healer?" she guessed, moving into a series of quick, rehearsed and oft-repeated sentences. "I'll be your expedition leader. People call me Notch. You're responsible for hauling your own gear. If you get killed, the most we'll do is throw your body into a crevasse without any regard whatsoever for any burial traditions you may have. If you see Klauth, just run. Finally, I don't care how curious you are; I'm not going to tell you how I got these scars." Those scars were rather prominent on Notch's face: four very deep, parallel, horizontal lines that had torn apart her face, turned one eye a blind white color, and marred her otherwise exceptional beauty.

"She needs gear," Nki added, motioning to the blanket draped over Cassiel's body with her thumb.

"Eat first. I'll get you something later," Notch grumbled. "Where you from, kid? Any experience in cold weather?"

Somewhere in the camp came the ringing of the bell. Cassiel was not quite sure what it meant, but new friend seemed to as it was suggested Cassiel see the expedition leader. Cassiel nodded. "Thank you, " she said, politely as she began to follow Nkiruka to a rather large, oddly shaped tent. There were not many people here yet, so Cassiel got a good look around and saw exactly where she pointed.

The expedition leader appeared to be an elf, and once she started talking she didn't give much of a break for her speech. Cassiel listened, and so many questions went into her head. Such as was it expected that someone would die? What or who was Klauth? In fact, the only question that didn't come to mind was how she had gotten those scars. Cassiel detested violence, even violent stories, so she would naturally stay clear of that story.

Once Cassiel was asked a couple of questions she finally felt it okay to speak. "I'm from a village near Norwood Forest. I don't have... too much experience in this much cold, no." She looked a little embarrassed, sure everyone else here would have plenty of world experience to help them trek on through in their exploring and expeditions. But, that was part of being here was for the experience and learning, right?

After having some food, Notch brought Cassiel with her to her tent, where the elf was keeping extra supplies. "They probably won't fit you," Notch said, looking the slight girl up and down while holding up a winter coat, "but at least the cold won't kill you." The expedition leader made sure she had everything she needed: warm clothing, proper footwear and some goggles to protect her eyes. She didn't bother giving Cassiel a backpack, since the amount of possessions she carried with her was so small anyway. "You'll be sharing a tent with, erm..." the elf trailed off, flipping through her papers. "...Nkiruka Bower, the combat escort. It's the dark green tent with black trim on the opposite side of camp." She straightened. "We'll begin the ascent of the mountain at daybreak tomorrow, so I recommend you get to sleep as early as you can."

Meanwhile, Nkiruka had long since retreated into the comfort of her tent. She'd been instructed to push all of her stuff to one side, allowing space for whoever was her tentmate. Even though she was in a sitting position when Cassiel arrived back in the tent, Nki's lower body was tucked neatly into her sleeping bag. She was sharpening her knives. Nki glanced up at Cassiel briefly to see who was there, then looked back down at her work. "Ah. It's you. I'll be going to sleep soon, so don't make a lot of noise in here."

Eventually, the sun dipped below the horizon. Base camp became quiet. The next morning, they would depart for the trail up the face of Mt. Agaptus.

Nkiruka woke from the sound of Notch yelling and banging on the side of their tent. Zipping out of her sleeping bag and stretching her wings over Cassiel, the mercenary quickly got ready. On her way out, she picked up her belt which contained the sheathes of her knives and put it on as she walked toward the mess tent for breakfast.

Within an hour or so, the sky began to glow as a sliver of the sun became visible over the jagged silhouettes of mountains. People were hard at work packing up their belongings and dismantling tents. Nkiruka herself arrived at the forming group carrying a minimalist backpack. Unlike the others, Nki had reworked the straps on her backpack so that they could be easily shed in the case of an emergency. If, for example, they were suddenly attacked by a wild beast, she could drop her backpack behind her in an instant and engage it.

Nkiruka approached Cassiel. "Make sure you can see me at all times. The others might get the occasional altitude sickness or frostbite, but I'm the one that's gonna be on the front line if something vicious attacks us. That means it's your job to cover my ass so I don't die. Understand?"

After eating, Cassiel was given all she would need to be able to survive in the cold, though most of the clothing was a bit loose on her but that was what belts were for, after all. "Thank you," she said, though the elf would probably not care. Cassiel was not used to being with so many tough people, and as far as she had seen, most everyone else in the camp were tough and experienced. It was a little intimidating.

Cassiel did get a little surprise in that the woman she had met before, Nkiruka, would be her tent buddy. Least she would be sticking with the somewhat friendlier face, though Cassiel was unsure when she heard 'combat escort' if this would be a good thing. She had gotten the feeling the woman was tough, but perhaps she would be violent too. That thought was also intimidating for Cassiel but she spoke nothing of it, and felt bad for judging anyone on merely their role in the group.

Cassiel, as per the elf's advice, went to her tent and went inside. Nkiruka was quick to advice Cassiel to not make too much noise when she went to sleep. "I won't," said Cassiel, laying on her side of the tent which was much more empty as Cassiel had brought very little her. With a little yawn, she curled up and found herself sleeping in no time, and she was quite the quiet sleeper.

Cassiel woke as the banging could be heard, and as she leaned up she could see the wings stretched over her. Unlike a lot of people she knew, Cassiel was a morning person and from the moment she awoke, she was bright, wide awake and ready for the day. Like many, she went for breakfast, and readied herself for the journey, but she did so with a smile, especially when she saw the sliver of sun in the sky.

Nkiruka approached her and told her what was what, though in somewhat crude language Cassiel herself would never use. To this, Cassiel nodded. "I understand," she said. "Is it highly likely we'll be attacked?"
